The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, staff was always available and very friendly, the breakfast consisted of toast, bananas, peanut butter and jelly, coffee and tea. There's a very nice hangout area downstairs with lovely decorations, however people and especially the staff used to sit around a lot and constantly smoke, which to non smokers is very discomforting. Our room was upstairs which was a little quieter, but wifi reception could've been better and the smell of cigarette smoke kept seeping into our room from downstairs every now and again. There are also fines for stained bed sheets and outside alcohol. If you walk in and ask for a room it's about 30 THB cheaper than through booking sites. Location was also great.

Good location. Very helpful owner. Price is reasonable, the room is not fancy but has everything you need.

laid back hostel, not the most social of places but staff are friendly and helpful with booking trips and buses. nice place to come back to rest after busy day trips around Chiang Mai. 20min walk from market, right by other hostels if you wanted to meet people for a drink

We loved our time here! Lantern house is a good location to get into old town and the surrounding neighborhood is friendly and fairly quiet. But above all, the owner (Pak) is incredible!! She helped us set up tours and find delicious places to eat nearby. She was always available either by person or text through WhatsApp and always had a smile on her face. Also the dog, Happy, is a major win.

Really enjoyed my stay here last year. Was only their for a couple of nights but staff were friendly and the location is excellent. It is a 15 minute walk from the nightclub district and super easy to catch a red cab from the nearby street. The rooms were clean and comfortable and lots of other hostels in the area meant there was always something to do.

Lantern House Backpackers is an excellent hostel in the heart of Chiang Mai. It is a short walk to all of the major sights and has many restaurants and street vendors nearby. The private rooms are spacious, bathrooms clean and the living area welcoming. Pak was very friendly and accommodating during our stay, helping us book a tour in Chiang Mai and hostel at our next destination. Would definitely recommend for couples staying in town.

Really enjoyed my stay here, Pak the owner went out of her way to help with everything.. even lent me her charger for the week as I lost mine! The bed is really comfy and rooms are spacious, definitely recommend!

This is a pretty good cheap bare bones place to stay. Pak is so nice and helpful, and the rooms do the job. Definitely get a room with air con though. The rooms with only fans are terribly hot (at least in May/June). I will say I wish we had met more people here, but the common area was outside and very hot. We learned on our last day here that apparently a lot of people staying at Lantern hang out at another hostel - Stamps - just down the road. It's worth checking out if you want to meet some more people. Overall would recommend Lantern House. Happy the dog (aka the "fat beagle") is a fun and homey aspect to the hostel as well.

Nice place for backpackers that want a private room with a bathroom and air con but don't need luxury. The outside area is nicely enlighted at night, hence the name of the hostel. The owner "pak" is very nice and gave us awesome recommendations like visiting the night market and an elephant camp.

Can't say enough great things about this hostel! Lantern was my favorite stay in all of Thailand; south, north or central. The staff are always easily found and incredibly helpful with any questions; from how to book train/bus tickets, to local food recommendations. The rooms are a bit stuffy during midday if you don't have AC, but that's typically when people are socializing in the main lounge anyways. Laundry is literally right next door, 7/11's ~2 min walk away, and a sister hostel called Stamps is right down the road. The two places typically have a lot of crossover in friend groups and social activities, but Lantern is the one that's cozier, calmer, a bit more homey after 2am. Can't say enough good things about Lantern, so go see for yourself! You'll be greeted at the door by Happy the beagle :)

The owner, Pak, is great. Always helpful, friendly, and available for guests. Truly enjoyed my time here. 350 baht for a private double room with private shower is a disappearing market in Chiang Mai... Then add Happy🐶 to the mix...

👍👍 The best thing about the hostel is the owner and her family. I stay here because I catch a late flight to Chiang Mai, the owner is accommodating with my late check in.
