From later afternoon, The junction around the old Clock Tower becomes an open air food market where both fresh (raw) produce and ready to eat meals can be purchased at very reasonable prices. It seems to target Thai people, on their way home from work and who are after a quick an easy meal solution for the family dinner. From my experience, this is one of the best places in Thailand to try local, authentically produced food where it is possible to order by pointing at what you want (avoiding mispronunciations)

This is the original city clock tower. Has no idea when it was build. Seem like it was there in the city center for age. since I came to Chiang Rai. It was build by Rotary International & sponsor (or build or donatred) by Kodek. Logo of Kodek on the clock dial, Rotary International below the clock face. No idea who build anf refurbished or renew the clock control. Like this original city clock tower over the new one (look too weird). This Is the clock tower when I came to Chiang Rai. It has great sentimental value for many of of us and local, I think some expat feel the same too.

It’s not the tower that people come for, it’s the market. Starting in the afternoon, booths get set up with prepared local foods, raw veggies and meats, drinks and smoothies, and other local fare. I came back each day to get some food which was the best authentic northern Thai food I’ve had.

Old clock tower is just next to local wet market. Good landmark. Easy to find it.

Not as fancy as the the new clock tower but it has an understated grace and elegance to it. The time also appears to be correct.

Watered down version of big brother two blocks down. It still serves as a landmark of sorts and Saturday afternoon saw a conglomeration of food stalls wet and grocery markets take shape as everyone got ready for the evening trade. Happy hunting.

Went to the street stalls here to get some food. They sell fresh fruits, vegetables and street food. Good ones here that i have tried are the grilled fish and fried pork (moo tod gratiem).

Best at night as it is well illuminated. Nearby are several cafes, restaurants and pubs to explore.

The clock tower is not that interesting but the market around is! Lots of street food.

The old clocktower that was replaced by the new gold version, and then moved several blocks away. It’s an inspiring story that the artist of the new one thought to replace this, even though the locals fought to keep this instead of the gold clocktower on the main roundabout! Worth walking to just contrast and see what the locals wanted to keep.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ Some call this Muang Chiang Rai Park, city park, flower garden. Nice on Saturday night. Have a walk on walking street then end here for a rest. Best is in the winter time. Flower festival and live performance by Thai pop star singer here. Free entrance for everyone. Next to the park is a huge lot of...
