Love this place! The food is always good, the vibes are really cool and the staff is friendly. They have a good size list of draft beers which are mostly house brews. I enjoy coming here every time! Recommendations - the beer cheese dip, jumbo pretzel & beef jerky to snack on.

Amazing experience! Staff was extremely personable, beer was exceptional, and oh the food... LO'!! THE FOOD!!!!! The food was phenomenal. Pictured is my order, the schnitzel sandwich which was transcendental. Nuff said. Get some flights of beer, get some amazing food, wander the streets ya filthy animal.

When my girlfriend told me she had to reserve this place two weeks in advance I was a bit skeptical but oh my god it is well worth the wait. This place is nothing short of excitement from the flavors the food brings. Everything is rich with flavor. I would come back to the city of Chicago just to eat here again. The chicken sandwich was so good since they used chicken thighs and the meat was tender and soft but super crispy. The duck and dumplings had a depth of flavor it left me shocked wanting to order more and more. Definetly check this place out as it is one for the history books. Bring an empty stomach. The beer and cocktails was also nice. But the food is where it is at.

We went on Saturday night with a reservation and were situated in a nook that was a little more private, which was great, but caused the servers to initially miss us. We waited around 20 minutes with no interaction from any of the staff before one of us got up and kindly reminded we were there and ready to order. Immediately a waiter come over and apologized and said the first round was on them. After that, they checked on us throughout the night and kept apologizing. I got the Duck and Dumplings and beer flight which were both amazing. Everyone else raved about their food and drinks, as well. Despite the little hiccup at the beginning, we were overall super happy with the food, experience, and exceptional customer service. Would definitely come back.

Accidentally found this place at lunchtime. I may accidentally find myself back here more. The food is very fresh and well prepared. There's not a ton on the menu, but it is a well rounded selection and really delicious. The arugula salad was suggested by our server, and it was amazing, although slightly I've dressed. The fries were perfect, and my friend said it was the best Reuben he's had in years. Lots of interesting beers to try next time.

We visited Forbidden Root during the week and made a reservation last minute just to ensure we got a table. The restaurant was very laid back and they had the windows open since it was a nice day. The server was very friendly and informed us of the burger special that was taking place that day. We ordered the Housemade Ranch Chips and the Burger and Fries. The ranch chips were flavorful and a nice appetizer. The burger was juicy and perfectly cooked. The fries were seasoned well and had a nice crunch to them. We enjoyed our visit to Forbidden Root and will certainly be back!

Inventive beers pair super well with the food. The rose ale was refreshing. Fries are perfectly crispy and the schnitzel was larger than my face and the flavors balanced nicely. Add amazing service to that and you have a delightful evening out

Probably have been here 15+ times in the past year and will be coming back 30+ more. You can't go wrong here. Food is always good, beer is a beautiful balance of aromatic/flavor/price/quality. Get the salads. They are probably the best I've ever had from anywhere. But if you aren't into that the wings and dumplings are just perfect comfort food that pair with everything on the menu.

The food and beer absolutely blew my mind. I ordered the mushroom pot pie and my wife ordered the duck and dumplings and we split the pretzel appetizer, all were mind blowingly amazing. I had the everyone wins draft beer and couldn't help but order a second glass and then a 4pack of cans for the road. Will definitely be coming back here again for sure as well as visiting their sister shop in Columbus Ohio a little closer to home.

definitely needs a reservation! What a great time we had! Atmosphere was cool, place was buzzin! food was great, the burger is BOMB! Salad wasn’t too bad (not the biggest salad fan in general) and finally the chips and ranch was AMAZING. Staff are awesome, our waiter was awesome and definitely worth a visit again!

This was one of the best meals we have had in Chicago! We ordered the Mushroom Pot Pie and Salmon. Both were incredibly curated. In addition to the meal, the beer was perfect. We loved the staff and had an incredible experience. If I could give 10 stars I would!

This place was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting bar food and very casual, it is rather casual but the food is a cut or two above what I was expecting. The beer flight is a great deal, 5 types of beer for $14 and it’s not the tiny shot glasses most places use. We split the arugula salad and Brussel sprouts to start - both were good. I had a cup of the corn soup which was delicious. Where the dinner really took off though was entrees; I couldn’t believe how delicious our food was. I ordered the short rib, which came with a delicious gravy over mashed potatoes and the most savory fried mushroom I have ever had. I savored every single bite. Every restaurant has a short rib dish now but not all of them do it right - tender, flavorful, juicy. My boyfriend had the duck and dumplings, which was at least as good as my short rib, maybe even better. All said and done, two flights of beer, 2 apps, a soup, two entrees and two more beers for dessert tan about $130, which anyone from the city knows is not really that pricey at all for that amount of food and drinks. I will return to this restaurant for sure.

Fun and interesting beer selection. Enjoyed the atmosphere and it's cool that the brewery/restaurant used to be an old movie theatre! The mushroom pasta and the brussel sprouts were delicious! I would highly recommend.

Was here for the brunch, got a flight, the corn soup, brunch ribs, and chicken and waffles. Everything exceeded our expectations and went well with the beers. For us, the star was the maple syrup, worked well with sweetening the waffles and was slightly spicy on the chicken. Love to check out some of the other stuff on the menu next time!

Stopped at Forbidden Root for an unplanned late afternoon lunch not fully knowing what to expect. Forbidden Root has a spacious interior with open air windows at the front of the restaurant. We sat at one of the tables nearest the front of the restaurant. I'm not generally nitpicky, but I have to admit that cleanliness alarms were going off for me when my arms stuck to the tops of the table. We all tried different beers with our meals, all of which got decent reviews. We ordered the Popcorn and House Made Ranch Chips (pictured), both of which were quite tasty, if a bit pricey. Those bowls in the photograph are SMALL. For a main, I ordered their Double Smashburger with fries, which was better than average. Good but not spectacular. I appreciated the Giardiniera Mayo on the burger but it needs just a little bit more love and I think it could be great. Overall I would say our meal at Forbidden Root was good, but there are probably other restaurants in very close proximity that can offer a bit more in terms of cleanliness and value.

First time coming here and I really liked it! They have great daily specials and do happy hour! I ordered the beer flight which is pre-picked and it was really good, particularly because they give you large portions! My only wish was that you could build your own flight. For food, I ordered the Spicy Chicken Sandwich and it was good but I have had better. Also, shared the chocolate cake with my friend and honestly, not my favorite; to be honest it felt underbaked. Ultimately, I say come here for the drinks more than the food.

Made a reservation and came in early and the table was waiting for us which was nice, first of service was good so we’re the drinks. My chicken sandwich was delicious some of the other food we got as a table didn’t turn out so good, the Reuben had more bread then corn-beef the salad was barely a salad. The smash burger was also a hit of the table. Overall this place is HOT just gotta know what to get. (The building it’s self was very cool)

Awesome beer and another vote for the duck dumpling dish. I did find the mushroom pasta to be a bit over cooked, but very helpful staff and interesting drink selection. They are “botanical” beers so definitely unique.

My wife and I have visited here twice: once when the kitchen was closed and another time to eat. With exceptional food, awesome drinks, and good service, Forbidden Root Restaurant can easily be a place to hang with your friends on a night after work or for a night or with the family! The servers were very accommodating and the greeters were very friendly.

The duck gnocchi was amazing. I could eat it every day through winter. Nice place to be and all the servers and bartenders are really welcoming but also left you to it which I love. I like their Panda Party and Strawberry Basil beer the best.

Come here right now and get the Duck + Dumplings and brussel sprouts and pair that with a flight of beers (choose your own, up to 5) and you'll have an amazing West Town dining experience. We were just going to have some beers but after sitting at the bar the bartender recommended the duck and dumplings and Brussels and I'm so glad we ordered them. The Brussels were not soaked in butter (like most places) and were served with nuts, which was great. You'd be missing out if you only came here for a beer and didn't order any food.

Fun ambiance, friendly staff, good selection of beer! We got the Chicken sandwich and the Mushroom pot pie, 4 stars on that. Same score for the beer, very good but not on scale with say, Lagunitas. If in the area or want to try someplace new, 5 stars on the whole package!

Many of our friends told us that this restaurant is really great we are so curious so we planned to go in here. The place has a really nice interior and the ambiance is cool and casual just like we all wanted to have. Their menu has a lot of options, prices are reasonable and we got a bit hard time choosing what to order. Our staff was friendly, patient and helpful by giving us some recommendations. We decided to order their burger for each of us and they just added some sides. The burger has a huge portion it was good but the sauce for me is too much but all in all it was still literally good. We had so much fun in this place. The food was good as well as their cocktails.

Great spot for quick apps or drinks. Beer flight was very good, and their shot selection was nice too. Cheeseboard was adequate. The burger was great, cooked medium rare, but the salads they use for their sides need a new sauce or change, way too bitter. Did not like that at all. The Spicy chicken sandwich was juicy and a good size as well.
