Sometimes there's nothing like a classic. Finished off my first day of my Chicago holiday by stopping off at this iconic establishment for a drink and a bit to eat. Simply breath taking place. You can just feel the bustle of history flowing around you. I settled for a spot at the bar since I was solo. The bartenders were attentive and helpful, allowing me to sample several of the beer selection to help me decide. I ended up choosing the Vienna lager and Gretchen's potato pancakes, which were a perfect match in both palette and vibe. The most unique and mouthwatering appetizer I have ever had. Each bite was like it's own personal welcome to town. My hats off the the chef and a dish everyone coming to town should go out of there way to sample at least once. Learning that this bar has connections to my own home town of Fort Wayne Indiana down to Addams brewery was just the cherry on top. Very much looking forward to my next visit to this spot and highly recommend this place. It truly does live up to the hype.

Enjoyed and excellent meal here on Friday 12/3. We were promptly seated and our server was friendly and attentive. We started off with Gretchen's potato pancakes as an appetizer. They were quite yummy. For our dinners we had the Jäger Schnitzel and the Molasses Crusted Pork Chop. Both were excellent. Finally for dessert, we split an apple strudel. We both also enjoyed one of their locally brewed beers which was also very good. Overall great service and food, at a very reasonable price for Chicago. Highly recommend this as a dining stop while visiting Chicago.

Very good authentic style German food. The pork was great. It had a nice smoked flavor and the sausage was bold. The Wiener schnitzel was good as well with a buttery finish. The interior of the place had a very timely and old world feel to it. The different beers from the attached brewery are worth trying in one of their four beer flights.

This was not my first visit but was my LAST visit to this once was Chicago staple. Just like many city staples this one strictly runs on FAME. Unfortunately, the fame wears out quickly and spot was nearly empty Saturday night. We kept our visit simple. Beers and Schnitzel. I went for the hefe thinking classic German wheat beer should be a hit in this place. But I was wrong, absolutely UNDRINKABLE with a weird smell. Ended up tasting two more beers and went with a simple lager. Dinner was suppose be to classic. Jger Schnitzel with spatzle noodles. Holly SALTY mountain of pork. It was sooooo salty that when my bartender tried the sauce she snagged the plate from me and RAN back to the kitchen saying “I need to warn the chef”. I am still surprised that one of their main dishes can leave the kitchen without anyone from the kitchen tasting the classic sauce. For 125 years, the Berghoffs have been benefiting from this iconic spot and it feels like for the last 20-30 years they didn’t put a single dime back into it.

Hadn't eaten here for nearly 25 years. My recollection was favorable and our last visit was very much up to what we wanted. Our group enjoyed a drink in the bar and dinner in the main dinning room. Great service and even better food. I don't think we'll wait so long to return.

Wonderful, fun dinner for 12 in their Chef's private room. We first stopped in their historic bar for a drink and a toast. David was our server and he was excellent! Everyone loved their dinner and followed it up with dessert and coffee. It was so nice being in this iconic restaurant. There is nothing pretentious. Just good people doing excellent work.

If you like German food, this classic Chicago icon is a must go. The service is prompt and have a thorough knowledge of the menu. The locally made beer selection is outrageous in both the number and quality of the offerings. We had nice appetizer of potato pancakes, and wiener schnitzel and chicken schnitzel. Very very good.

The Berghoff was a fun place to fine for, in my case, a late lunch/early dinner. It has a large beer selection and a concentrated list of German foods. Our table got the curds, 3 sausage plate, and the schnitzel. All were good and went well with the Wheat Banana Beer I got. Would recommend. The interior is beautiful by the way.

Just walking by and decided to go in to check it out. So happy we did. From the busser to wait staff to the food was excellent. Loads of options for gluten free to vegetarian, small appetite to big, you're covered. Must eat here!

I went to Chicago in April and I still think about that food sometimes. It is peak comfort food. Wraps you like a warm blanket after a cold rain. The food is what I imagine a grandma would cook (I don’t have a German grandma but I picture her cuisine just like that). I had most awesome soup, great cocktail and just enjoyed every bite. This doesn’t happen too often to me but I just fell in love with that place. Would want to go back to Chicago just to go there again.

Great dinner. First course was the bacon wrapped jumbo shrimp. Awesome. Great cocktails. Bread order came with 3 breads and a giant cheese crisp. I had the beef medallions rare with fingerling roast potatoes and grilled asparagus. Very good. Service was great and would definitely come back. Highly recommend. Beef was a tad chewy at rare temp. Probably grilled teres major medallions. Would eat again probably mid rare next time. My waiter was Christopher J and he did a great job.

Amazing restaurant! The quality of the food was fantastic and so delicious. The decor inside was so classy and clearly had history. We had an extremely kind server, Esther, who was so patient with our order and even helped us out when we spilt our drink everywhere. Would love to visit again.

Authentic German cuisine that will have you yearning for more. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough to someone who is not sure where to eat when they visit Chicago. I’ve been here plenty of times as a child and finally was able to visit as an adult. It was exactly as I remembered. You will experience the same amazing service and food every time you come to enjoy. This time I was happy to hear they had live music and a great combination with the brewery next door (Adams Street Brewery). Come enjoy the good eats and great times!

They were booked for reservations but we thought we’d pop in to see if someone cancelled, they hadn’t but they had a whole bar area of open seating. Our waiter was great and the food was perfect! I recommend the pierogi if you’re wanting something light. Their root beer is amazing!

The food was okay. I had the white fish with the pea risotto. The fish was good but the pea risotto was over cooked. The place and ambiance is great!! Their collections of beer is really good as well. Amazing atmosphere.

I was part of a group of people touring the city. Sightseeing in other words. Eating at this restaurant was part of the package. I had never eaten here or heard of this I guess famous restaurant. Has to have something going for it to have been founded in the late 18 hundreds. I had the Sauerbraten dinner and it was fantastic and I mean it. Lots of beef that was fork tender over a ton of real mashed potatoes. All covered with a mild sweet & sour gravy. Dessert was Apple Strudel made from fresh apples with a light and flakey crust. I had coffee to drink and the brand was one that I hadn't seen in some time, Farmers Brother organic coffee. Service was outstanding and the decor kept me busy just admiring it. In other words, I loved the meal, service and atmosphere.

I used to have dinner here with my cousin anytime I was in the City but haven't been there since he passed away. Today, my colleagues and I had lunch there and it was as great as I remember. The food was delicious, the atmosphere festive and although it was busy, the service was pretty good.

I was so hungry I forgot to take pictures of the entrees we ate, but the food was to temp, nice presentation, and delicious. German affair food and ale here. We had the house specialties, one was veal and the other was pork. They distill beer here on premises. The staff was welcoming, fast, and friendly. The apple strudel was wonderful a la mode.

The restaurant was beautiful and the service was great! The food wasn't amazing but I would say I enjoyed it. I got the chicken spatzleknoodel as the main course and it was kind of like fried Mac and cheese.

Beautiful historic restaurant with delicious authentic German food and friendly staff. I had the Sauerbraten with perfectly cooked veggies and they were accommodating with putting the sauce on the side. Tasty and fluffy/crispy pretzel! Decadent and dreamy flourless chocolate cake. Best dessert I had while visiting the city!

Nice atmosphere with no overtly loud music. Very friendly staff! The pierogies were delectable. The plank salmon was ok. The beer battered cod was good except mine had bones in it still. The fries were crisp and delicious. Excellent tartar sauce and vegetables. Good prices. Orange juice was 'from frozen'.

We showed up earlier than our reservation and we were able to be seated with no problem. I dont remember our servers name but he seemed nice. We had more interaction with the guy cleaning off the tables. The food was great and the beers we tried were great. I give 4 stars because we ended the meal and had nothing to drink. The beers were gone and so were our waters.

Excellent Corn Beef Sandwich. With Beer list that is off the Chain. Old School atmosphere is off Chain as well. Brother Ishmael will get you squared away if you have any questions. Try the stuffed Mushrooms.....

Am always delighted by the Berghoff. The German food is both authentic and tasty to the service is first rate, and the old world atmosphere delights. Very cool that Chicago's heirloom German restaurant has been operated by the same family for 4 generations. We love this place!

Food was good. Wooden decor was very nice, although sitting next to the brewery wasn't the greatest.

Very good German food. The beer is great There is a good selection of food and varieties. It was a bit more expensive than I thought it was going to be, but it is high quality good. Recommend it to anyone in the area.

Berghoff in Chicago is a delightful taste of Germany with a rich history. From the moment you step in, the friendly staff makes you feel at home. The menu offers a tempting selection of German classics, and the hearty main courses, priced between $20-30, are worth every penny. The highlight? The authentic brews that transport you straight to Bavaria. Whether you're a fan of German cuisine or simply looking for a cozy, memorable meal, Berghoff is a must-visit. Prost to an unforgettable dining experience!

We had a five star experience. Made reservations on a Friday night. Place was packed but we were seated immediately. Delightful, old-school interior, lots of large parties and a lively vibe. Everyone was having a good time. The house brewed beers were fantastic. Sausage trio with kraut, warm potato salad and sharp mustard was out of this world. We did have the world’s quietest waiter, but he was fast and efficient, and friendly. Another waiter popped by unprompted and, I assume recognizing us as out of towners, gave us a mini history of the restaurant and his incredible 30 year tenure with the establishment. I only wish I could go back several more times to try all the other dishes I saw passing by our table.

Legendary, 'contemporarily authentic' German food with terrific new microbrewery on site served by some of the best staff in the region at this historic, architecturally-significant venue. Save room for wonderful desserts...or order some to take-away for later!

Stopped in to see my old friend Pete a few weeks ago. He was busy so I got a beverage and ordered some food to go. So good! Can't wait to return, I think next time I will let know of my visit

It has been almost 20 years since coming back to this restaurant. My wife and I got there early on a Saturday afternoon before the crowd and the service was fast, the food was delicious and service was excellent. We were able to eat without feeling rushed and took dessert with us. We came in from Bolingbrook just for this meal and went back home. It was a solid experience.

A bustling restaurant for the middle of the afternoon! Good comforting German food. The sausages that my husband ordered were full of flavor. We ordered some bread as an appetizer that was pretty disappointing but the meal itself was very good

Enjoyed the Chicago landmark. Good German food and great beer brewed right here. Take in a dining experience that generations had enjoyed.

  • 5/5 Stephy M. 1 year ago on Google
Excellent meal and atmosphere. The waitstaff is funny and kind, and they're honest about whether dishes will travel well. My favorite soup, their apple and onion soup, sadly wouldn't be a good contender — which is a shame because my family loves it just as much. I've been coming to The Berghoff since I was a little girl and always recommend it for anyone looking for a nice German meal: flavorful, hearty, and time-and-true recipes. Though I can't speak to their alcoholic beers, the root beer is great! My friend enjoyed her sauerbraten and my deconstructed chicken cordon bleu was delicious. Save room for dessert because they bake their own; the black forest cake is an indulgent treat.

  • 5/5 Tim S. 1 year ago on Google
Had a wonderful lunch here today! Everything on the plate was incredibly flavorful! The schnitzel recipe comes from the original cookbook of the place — the spatzle was amazing as well. They have a small brewery inside and I cannot say enough about the Pilsner and Oktoberfest!

The Berghoff has been a Chicago icon since the turn of the century. You not only get fantastic, authentic German food, but also the people are exceptional. Not only is it owned by the fourth generation of Berghoffs, some of the staff have generational history as well. Hats off to Ishmael, our exceptional busser from Palestine, who has been working at Berghoffs for over 40 years. He was really part of what made our experience delightful. Berghoffs also owns Adams Brewery next door.
