We dined here for our anniversary dinner. Reserved a table online and were seated immediately. Service was great and quick. Some great vegetarian options in the menu. We tried veggie fried rice and it was delicious. I also tried the crispy chicken bao buns and loved it. My husband had a jalapeño based cocktail and was very impressed by it! Only thing we didn’t like was that the music playing was very loud. Other than that, it was a great meal!

Amazing ambience, incredible food, and impressive service staff. Our waitress has worked for this location for 9 years, and she guided us through the menu flawlessly! A flawless experience from start to finish! (Get the tempura shrimp!

Sunda is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at…by far. Aside from the amazing ambiance and service, the food was out of this world. Everything was carefully plated and finished. You can really tell the amount of care they put into their dishes. The cocktails were just as perfect as the food was as well. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. It will not disappoint. Highly recommend.

Dancing through the flavors of Asia!!!! Sunda Chicago has a mission, and that's to promote Asian cooking culture to the world their way. From the moment you enter, you're taken away by the lively atmosphere. Lucky for us, we had NATE as our server, who literally took what we liked and made us our menu. Nate truly enjoyed picking our drinks, apps, entrees, and desserts. Run don't walk to Sunda Chicago. Ask for NATE, Molly sent you 😎

The food was good. But the service was sorely lacking. It wasn’t even that busy and there were lots of empty tables that night. Im positive that our table was being overlooked in favor of the tables where drinks were being ordered. It’s too bad because we were going to order more food, but our waitress never showed up again after serving us except to take our dessert order much later. Sadly we won’t return.

Vibrant spot in the city for drinks and small plates with Asian-inspired flavors. The restaurant gets fairly dim inside later at night but the ambiance is modern and upscale. Prices are reasonable for location and the smaller plates make it easier to share dishes among your fellow diners. Menu offered various unique dishes and flavors but the overall taste of the food left more to be desired. Service was quick and employees were friendly despite a busy night. Great place for a night out but food does not compare to the top Asian restaurants in the city.

A huge menu with something for everyone. Everything we tried was delicious and I could’ve stayed there for five hours even more. Reservations are recommended as they do get busy and don’t seat to capacity during lunch hours.

The food was amazing. Great for gluten and dairy free people. My only fault is they didn’t clear our dirty plates for clean ones when we had multiple courses and they couldn’t split a check three ways.

Highly recommend this place. The presentation, atmosphere, and taste of the food was excellent. I got the chap Chae and it was so good my friend ended up ordering one to go. The rice bread Pudding cake was also so, so good. I will dream about this cake forever.

Ambience is on point. Service is great. Food is decent, didn't feel fresh. Very loud so wouldn't go there for date night. Though the ambience is contrary. If they would tone down music and get food qulaity up that would be awesome.

Came here for the happy hour and it was a great experience! A bit weird that you have to sit at the bar for the happy hour but nice that’s it’s 4-6 Monday through Friday since most happy hours don’t include Friday. We ordered the Moscow mule $8 cocktails and split some bar bites that were only $6 each! We got the Nori Fries which were interesting and delicious and also the pork belly which I definitely recommend! The staff was attentive even as it got busy and the atmosphere in the restaurant is really nice! A darker, more formal kind of environment.

The food was delicious and our server was fantastic. It is setup similar to a NYC style place with close tables so expect it to be a bit loud. The Wagyu lobster roll was amazing!

Highlights for me were the attentive, rapid service (constantly refilling my water) and the spicy edamame - SO addicting! The rest of our food and drinks were very good as well. The “crunchy hamachi” is not very crunchy and not what we expected but actually tasted delicious. We ordered a second Tale of Two Tunas since we enjoyed it a lot. I also liked the crispy spicy tuna. All the “spicy” things were mild enough for me to enjoy, given that I can barely handle any spice! The place is definitely elevated, fun, night out vibes. But the acoustics are terrible and it’s extremely loud just from people talking, no music, which detracts from the atmosphere. Also for a place with such quick table service, I was disappointed to see the bathrooms were GROSS and clearly not attended to! Lastly parking is difficult on a Saturday night but there’s always valet.

The restaurant is in a prime location for things to do before and after eating. When entering, you’re greeted promptly (expect a wait on dinner services especially on the weekend). The ambience is modern and the place is nicely decorated. We ordered the edamame, steamed bun (egg plant), tofu pad Thai, sweet potato roll. The food is average at best but does come out fairly quickly. The menu has accommodations for various dietary restrictions. Once seated, the jarring music becomes annoying to talk over. Furthermore, the music is that of a club or disco rather than something more tranquil and soothing. To further add to the disturbances, there are usually at least one birthday party on any given weekend. I have been to this places on numerous occasions for years so my experience isn’t a ‘one-off’. Overall, given the area, the price is mainly for the location. I would recommend other places before coming here.

Amazing atmosphere, good service, tasty food! The servers and chef were very kind to work with my food allergies (gluten free, dairy free, egg free). We got apps and entries! Tail of two Tunas and the Brussels were AMAZING!! The fish was fresh and flavorful!

Delicious Asian food in the heart of river north. Despite the restaurant being super packed, service was excellent. The food was really good! Highly recommend the crab noodles and fried chicken bao buns. While the restaurant looks great, it is also super, super loud. Overall, we enjoyed!

First off, the ambiance is great. Decor is very nice and the atmosphere is great for a fun night out with friends. I ordered the Red dragon sushi roll and it was delicious. My friend ordered the szechuan chicken but said they didn't like it much. The garlic noodles werent bad, could use a bit more seasoning and less cook time. We also ordered the spicy edamamae and it was probably the best edamame I've ever had. It is seasoned very well and tossed with garlic and butter and isn't your typical stesmed edamame you tend to find at restaurants. The shishito peppers were a little overdone for my liking. I ordered the strawberry fields (virgin) and it was underwhelming, not much strawberry flavor and too tart for my liking. The dish that took the night was the Ridiculous. It's a heap of vanilla ice cream with a crumb layer of carrot/ginger cake and then coated with caramel walnut sauce. That dessert was DIVINE and if for nothing else, I'll be returning for that dessert alone. The textures worked in harmony and the caramel sauce buffered with the thin layer of cake was the perfect complement to the ice cream. Overall I had a great time and would return again.

Sunda is always a good choice. I haven't been in a while so I popped in for restaurant week. I had the crispy brussels, yellowtail, and salmon. I added a drink & dessert. The flavors were great. However, I was disappointed that the crispy brussels weren't actually crispy. It wasnt what I expected based on past experiences. Maybe just an off night but overall good experience!

I went to Sunda last night with friends and family and had the best time! The ambiance was great, the food was insanely delicious, and the service was outstanding! We ordered so much food and it was all delicious. My favorite was “the great white” sushi, the uni, the adobo pork belly, and the ny strip lollipops. The wine we ordered too was very delicious and smooth, highly recommend—it was a cab called Napa Valley QUILT. Our server Nolan was awesome and provided a level of service out of this world—he made the experience so enjoyable and engaged with us a lot which we loved! We’re very grateful for the awesome experience we had. I highly recommend treating yourself to a great evening out to Sunda!

Brunch with the girls and we picked Sunda. I wished the brunch menu had more options. It was very small and didn’t have a lot of the things we saw online. We should have went on another day besides Sunday lol. But what we got was good! Just wish there was more to choose from.

We were a group of 10 people for a business meal. They put us next to the Sushi making table, which was very bizarre. They need to get rid off this table. It was in the middle of heavy traffic area where all the waiters go to the kitchen and grab Sushi. But they were able to move us to an appropriate table for our group to enjoy and have a great time. It only looked up from here from drinks, apps, Sushi boat, crispy spicy rice, all desserts from the menu and SAKE!! The whole team primarily comprised of UK colleagues had a fantastic time!! Thank you to the whole team.

Been here for dinner once and food was good, but it was noisy. Came back to try brunch and was very shocked at how good it was. Favorite dish pictured was the tempura french toast. Had a fun crispness. The Ube waffles is not crunchy and not too sweet (for those who might think Ube too sweet), but the chicken was amazing!!

This place is great! Been here a few times and the food is outstanding. We got a couple cocktails, the fried chicken buns, lumpia, the red dragon roll and the panda roll and all of it was extravagant. The way they bring the flavors together is marvelous!

First time going and it was a bit of a disappointment. We ordered: Brussels, oxtail potstickers, spicy tuna sticky rice and 50/50 bao buns (eggplant and chicken). The Brussels were a good flavor 8/10 Spicy tuna sticky rice was decent but I’ve had better 6/10 Both bao buns had no flavor at all 4/10 Oxtail potstickers were dry 4/10 We also ordered wine and two cocktails which were standard. All in all the ambiance was nice, service was decent but the food was not worth the $175 bill. I’d rather try a new spot than visit there again

This place is perfect. I didn't think it was going to be that big and lavish. Loved the decoration. My waitress and other staff were top notch. Food was the fresh and phenomenal with many options. Sashimi recommended to me was the best I've had. Reservations worked great.

Fave dishes pictured: Baked snow crab Handroll and lemongrass beef lollipops! I loved the warmth of the Handroll and the sauce for the lollies was great. We had a bunch of apps so also enjoyed the oxtail potstickes. I did not care for the seoul wings- the wing sauce was fine but the toughness of the chicken was too tough for me. By the time we received the steamed buns, I may have been too full, but I also felt that meat was chewy (we had the fried chicken and pork).... my kids loved the pork fried rice. There ared high chairs and kids drinks with lids available. The atmosphere was fun and lively! I will return.

Checked out Sunda in Chicago and it was a fun experience. Tried a variety of dishes from red dragon & rainbow rolls, good but nothing fantastic. Oxtail potstickers were different. The miso cauliflower was a hit. Lemongrass beef sticks were great, flavorful and soft. Crab butter noodles were ok, not much crab flavor mostly butter tossed noodles, expected more flavor. Tom yum said bass was amazing, probably the best fish I've had. Crispy rice was really good, great flavor and the bits of crunchy rice really added to the dish. The kamayan feast was a great sharing dish with a variety of foods that were very rich. The "Ridiculous" dessert was crazy good, I would go back just for the dessert.

Sunda is one of my all-time favorites in Chicago! Have been going here for the past 10+ years and I’ve never been disappointed. I love the Crispy Brussel Sprouts, the Adobo Fried Rice, and the Tiger Shrimp Tempura. Service is always good and atmosphere is nice too.

Went here for happy hour, got seated immediately as a party of three. All the food we tried was pretty decent, but nothing really stood out as amazing. Would like to come back for their actual dinner menu to compare, but happy hour pricing wasn’t really enough of a discount to bring me back for that.

  • 4/5 H 10 months ago on Google
For the price…Presentation of the sushi could have been better. Meh. Tables were a little tight..Bathroom were bad- seriously sticky. That said, the tiger shrimp, filet lollipops were both delicious. The sushi quality was good. We ordered the Medori and some other one that had mango. The drinks were good and the service was fast. For how crowded it was they definitely turn the food fast.

I was in Chicago recently for a weekend girls’ trip. I made a reservation at Sunda kind of last minute to celebrate my friend’s birthday our first night there. Best decision ever. The energy was amazing as soon as we came in. We were late but the hostess was very accommodating. We were seated quickly and had the privilege of having Ezra as our waiter. He made this an AMAZING experience for us. First of all, the food came out quickly. We tried at least 6 things on the menu and they were all delectable (our favorite was the lump crab noodles and the tempura shrimp). We actually levitated out of our bodies. The drinks are very good too. Now on to Ezra. I love going to nice restaurants and have never had such wonderful, kind, charming, effective service. He made my friend’s birthday an unforgettable night by going above and beyond for us. We just had to sing his praises, and were able to speak to his manager Elena. She was also very kind and affable, which is a pattern at this restaurant. I let her know that I was shocked they weren’t packed out every night, but hey, more for the rest of us! It’s an “aesthetic” restaurant that actually has great food, is reasonably priced, plays good music, and provides great service. What more could you ask for?

Another "not my first time here, but first Google Review" for this place! 5-stars pre-COVID days and 3.5-stars for this most recent experience for Sunday Brunch around 2pm. Service right off the bat was lacking, unfortunately. We waited around a good 15-min before we asked the front door host to have a server stop by our table. The Manager came right away and apologized, noting they were short-staffed and had some call-ins. Not that we wanted to hear that, but our menu selections kind of made up for it. Pictured here are their Lumpia; Sumo Mary (gigantic Bloody Mary at $38 dressed with a ton of food) which I highly recommend as a meal option and order with a side of Garlic Rice; All Silog Plate (they call it "Island Breakfast Plate") (Longanisa, Tocino, Bacon, Egg, Atchara, Garlic Rice); Steak and Eggs; and of course their Halo-Halo (they call it "Sundae Sundae"). After coming here many times pre-COVID, I hope this place decides to beef up their service and continues to stick around.

Phenomenal, high-end dining experience in the heart of the Windy City. Each course became progressively more flavorful and unique as the night progressed. Additionally, the menu offered variety that was equally fitting to everyone’s dietary restrictions ( vegetarian, dairy free etc..) without compromising the taste. Will definitely be returning on my next trip to Chicago! My personal favorite was the Poke Bowl, the Brussels sprout salad and the Dragon sushi. The sorbet and mochi at the end were also equally delicious!

I was in the mood for sushi: the Hotel Chicago recommended Sunda so I went. It was so good I went back the next night. I loved the sushi, the seaweed salad and the miso soup was amazing. Great spot and great staff.

Sunda is great if you know what you’re getting into. The ambiance: Be aware/beware that this is a big bachelorette party spot and family spot and it is LOUD! My friend and I were visiting from NYC where we both eat sushi quite often. I noted that at a sushi spot in NYC that is supposed to be upscale the vibes are much different. But it depends what the restaurant is going for and I just didn’t know that Sunda had such a casual/rowdy vibe before going. The service: service was kind. We loved our waiter who let us sample different types of sake before deciding on a bottle. We ended up ordering “The Gambler” roll- more on that later- and were told to wave someone down when we found the ghost pepper if we needed milk or ice cream. At the moment that happened we couldn’t find our waiter and waved someone else down. My friend was struggling a bit after eating the ghost pepper and we asked for ice cream. The other waiter said “can I just bring milk?” And she said “no, ice cream.” And then we never saw that waiter again lol. The food: the food was just good. Nothing was a standout but nothing was bad. The temperatures of the sushi were way off. Rice was all cold, making me feel like they prep all of the rice earlier in the day and just have an assembly line putting it all together rather than care into each roll, but it’s a big space and it’s a bachelorette party space after all so I guess they’re going for quantity over quality. The gambler roll: so my friend and I were a little confused about what we were getting into. The waiter noted he’d never seen a group of only two order it before (again I think it’s a bachelorette party gimmick but we didn’t understand that going in). It’s like a game of roulette where the whole roll is very spicy with spicy tuna and a sambal sauce on every piece and one single piece has a ghost pepper hidden in it. All in all it was a fun experience! We were just too full because it was the last thing they served us and I think the sambal was the completely wrong flavor-profile for this meal. It was very vinegary and this roll had no potential to be delicious because of it. I give 4 stars mostly because we loved our waiter. I’d recommend Sunda for someone who isn’t particular about their sushi and wants a party-atmosphere.

For a Southeast Asian culinary experience, you have to try Sunda Chicago! Had dinner with friends and had a fun time. Place has a great vibe, good service, and food is yummy. We ordered Papaya Salad, Street Corn, crispy Eggplant Bao bun, Tuna Poke bowl, Hamachi Tartare and Crazy rice. All of dishes were delicious and very flavorful ; I am a vegetarian but my friends loved all the non-veg dishes. Check it out.

It was really delicious food, but a bit of a waiting time. We even got a free shot of sake to taste. Highly recommended.
