This was an absolutely amazing stay, to say that the customer service was 5 stars would be an understatement. We were upgraded to the millennium suite with views of the park and Cloud gate for an unforgettable stay. The room was splendid as well with a vintage feel. The architecture of the hotel is absolutely stunning. They have done a fantastic job to preserve the feel of the early 1900s and it comes through. Please do check out the Game Room and have breakfast in the Drawing Room. Cindy's Rooftop is part of the hotel and is free access to the hotel guests to stand at the balcony and enjoy rooftop views (you need a reservation for table and food service tho). The staff especially Kristen, Josh, Sharita, and Vince are amazing people, just talk to them when you're here and you'll know. I've stayed in many countries and many properties and this experience has been in the top 3 of my life for sure. It is a Category 4 hotel in World of Hyatt (and god I hope it stays that way), so use them points and free night certs, cannot recommend this property and experience enough for y'all. I typically don't post detailed reviews but a few folks here inspired me to do so. Happy to answer any questions. Our stay was 5 days so we really had a great time at the hotel and I can't wait to be back.

This is a nice hotel, but it feels like it's trying to be a 5-star while trending closer to a 3-star in ways. Lobby area is overrun with non-hotel guests, elevators are grossly inadequate and our room with a view should not have been sold as a room with a view, considering approximately 80% of the window was blocked by an architectural detail, which while cool, did not give us much of a view of the park or anything else. Several things in the room needed repair - bathroom fan not working but making a loud noise, Chromecast was not working until I fooled with it, curtains that could absolutely not be closed without both hands physically pulling the curtain across the rod as the poles were useless, no bathrobes and a clock that I could not figure out how to set that kept blinking zero. Also no mini-bar despite being prominently advertised as having such. While these are minor details, these are the kind of details that separate a good hotel from a great hotel. I did not bother mentioning this to hotel staff because moving rooms or having maintenance come to the room is not something I want to deal with when I only have two days to enjoy my time off. The history is undeniable, it's an absolutely gorgeous facility. I found the staff we interacted with extremely helpful and friendly, especially the gentleman at the door who seems to help everybody find their way around. I likely would not stay here again, but hopefully I can get into the restaurant on the roof next time. When I made my hotel reservation I wanted to make a restaurant reservation at Cindy's, however they only open up 30 days out. As I did not remember to check exactly 30 days out, I was unable to get a reservation when I looked 2 weeks before our arrival. This should be improved upon for hotel guests while booking stays.

I was extremely pleased with my stay. I was greeted with kindness and easy check in and out process. It’s silly but I did not even take pictures of my hotel room because I was grasping in how lovely it was. The shower was cool set up, great water pressure. Kind size bed was divine and decor of the room was pretty cool. I had a drink up in the rooftop bar which was pretty amazing, great view of the city and pretty packed. It was just myself, so I was able to get a drink and enjoy very easily. Bartender at the Cindy was nice and accommodating. I decided to have another drink by the front desk area- very cool Harry Potter looking area. Only thing I would say is my walking waiter who was assisting me was slightly rude but shaking it off to not kill my vibe of the night. I ordered lovely breakfast the morning of my check out which was great. It was right on time and it was delicious. Thank you Daniel for the great hospitality and the rest of the front desk staff that were kind to me.

This is a beautiful, historic hotel that is well maintained and the location is prime. Unfortunately the hotel is more focused on people who reserve the restaurants and bars rather than the hotel guests. Many nights all the common spaces were reserved and one night there was an event that ran till midnight with loud music heard throughout the hotel. Also, there is a never ending influx of people using Cindy’s that makes it near impossible for guests of the hotel to move through the hotel comfortably. The hotel should strive to accommodate paying guests of the hotels instead of people just coming for a picture and a drink.

The main building is oozing with old world style. The reading and drawing rooms are appointed with gorgeous ornate fireplaces and having my morning breakfast felt like something out of an HP novel without giving JK money. The food isn't inexpensive but I didn't expect it to be. The annex building where our rooms were feels slightly disconnected but they were comfortable nonetheless. This is definitely the most masculine hotel I've ever stayed in, but in a fine-cigar and whiskey way, instead of grey granite way. The service was impeccable. From the moment Dave(he was our favorite) opened the first door to the moment J handed us our bags from the luggage hold upon departure. The cherry circle room had outstanding food but expect to pay a bit. Absolutely try to make reservations for the milk room( a sneaky set of ornate double doors in the hall between lobby and game room) to get a $$$ cocktail. I absolutely loved my stay, would recommend. It would be the perfect hotel for a sophisticated boys weekend.

While I have certainly stayed at more luxurious and fancier properties, This is my favorite hotel I have ever stayed in, without question. The variety of food and beverage options is like no where else I have ever stayed. Each and every restaurant and bar on the property is stunning. Cindy's, Cherry Circle Room, Milk Room, Game Room. Every one of them are on point, and serve some of the best food and drinks I've had in the city! The lobby is probably one of the coolest and most historic places that I've had the pleasure of sitting in, and makes one feel like they've time-travelled back to a Chicago of the early 1900's. As far as the rooms go, I've stayed in a suite and a regular room, and I would have to recommend spending the money to upgrade to a suite or founders room for better views and ambiance. The staff at the hotel did a great job of making us feel welcome, and really did their best to provide a level of service that you don't find at many hotels. In particular, David was amazing, and treated us all like royalty. I've never met anyone more pleasant at any hotel. This guy is a rockstar! Our trip to Chicago was completely amazing, in large part due to the choice of staying at this property. I can't think of a more fun and exciting place to stay in the city. The Athletic Association will be my very first choice from now on, whenever I am in town.

What an incredible experience I had at the Chicago Athletic Association! I am a wedding photographer and after having shot over 400 weddings, this venue stands out amongst some of the best. The catering staff is second to none, and the food was impeccable! I also stayed here overnight for two nights and could not have been more impressed with the staff. The bellmen were so kind and accommodating (specifically Nick and Dave). And the front desk staff are wonderful. I misplaced my coat and Darius went above and beyond to locate it for me. The room itself was clean, quiet, and comfortable.

Very unique hotel with lots of character in the heart of Chicago! Location is great... walkable from train station and downtown restaurants and stores. We came for a birthday weekend trip and they gave me a little birthday treat! We've stayed at many Hyatts before and were never disappointed. We understand the room is small considering it's in Chicago, but we had 3 complaints. 1. No easy access to water. In order to get water (or ice), you need to request it and they only give you 1-2 bottles for 2 people. We had to request water 1-2 times a day. 2. Cleanliness of the room was okay, but not great. (Looked like it wasn't vacuumed and there was drips on the toilet from not cleaning) Room service the next day did a better job. 3. No fridge in room. (They noted the inconvenience on a note in the room but wasn't aware until after checking in)

I made a reservation for a King room with a Millennium Park view at a very premium price and was looking forward to showing my travel partner (a first time visitor to Chicago) the facilities like the Game Room and Cindy's Rooftop. Well, we discovered at check-in that ALL of the restaurants and bars were closed for private events. I probably wouldn't have found out about the closures had I not told the check-in staff that I was planning on heading to Cindy's that evening. They offered us complimentary champagne vouchers to preempt the disappointment, but that's not NEARLY enough to make up for the value lost. I complained and was offered complimentary breakfast the next morning - still a consolation prize and not enough to make up for the second-class experience. I ended up getting a refund and staying at a different 4-star hotel up the street - also with a Millennium Park view - at a savings of about $300. I want to be clear here that the check-in staff worked very hard to be accommodating and keep our business. Everyone working the front desk that day was very understanding of my frustration and gracious in helping me get my room refunded - they were the only thing keeping this experience from being a one-star review. The problem here lies with management, who apparently make lots more money from private events than from providing a first-class experience for their hotel guests. They must know that guests consider Cindy's, Game Room, etc as part of the overall experience, because the closure information was not made explicit during the reservation process and was very difficult to find. Unfortunately, this made it feel like a second-class experience at a luxury price point and has really hurt my estimation of this brand. If you visit Chicago, I'd recommend choosing a different hotel and visiting this historic building at your leisure.

It's our second time staying here and I honestly love the hotel and their staff. If there's a nitpick I have, it's that the bathrooms have no separate (light) heating at all so during colder weather, it can get extremely cold in there. The bathtubs are narrower than hotel standard, the shower divider makes the water leak to the floor, and I have the hardest time putting on make up because of the bathroom and room lighting. 😅 But otherwise, great hotel: interesting (not boring) interiors and theme, love their food, you have access to the best rooftop bar in town (Cindy's) as a guest, one of the best speakeasy bars is just downstairs (Milk Room), you have access to the Game Room and the Cherry Room, aaaand Shake Shack is just downstairs. Location is amazing— right smack in front of Millennium Park / Cloud Gate and a few blocks down, you have access to a bike trail (Lakefront Trail), the beach, the Magnificent Mile, etc.

WOW! The location of the hotel is unbelievable! We had a direct view of the “bean” from our room, it was so beautiful! Although the rooms are small, they’re so unique. It doesn’t feel like a Hyatt property, it’s just something so unique! All the staff was wonderful, the rooftop bar was awesome and the city lights from there were beautiful!! We were on our honeymoon during this stay, and the staff left us a little something to congratulate us. I’d absolutely stay here again!!

EDIT: Should have waited for the review. Bed bugs are apparently a thing here. I dismissed this at first but that's obvious what happened to me now. Very disappointing and such I advise to stay far away. Obviously a great location and having access to the rooftop bar is a very nice bonus. The theme is certainly unique and certainly adds charm. The limited interaction I had with the staff they were very welcoming and pleasant. The room is where everything falls apart. My room was damp like I was in an old basement or something. Also cleaning wasn't that great. It wasn't gross but dust on everything doesn't meet the expectations of this hotel especially considering the cost.

The Chicago Athletic Associatio hotel is amazing. As a tourist it has everything you want, big clean rooms, very nice staff who are friendly and accommodating and a fantastic location close to "the loop" and all modes of transit around Chicago that make it a perfect hotel for touring the city and taking in the sights. Beyond the pragmatic advantages, it's just a gorgeous hotel in general, it's very lavish interior, somehow it smells fantastic EVERYWHERE in the hotel, the rooms have a cool athletic theme (we had a pommel horse in our room!) and generally the atmosphere is very Chicago feeling. The staff are fantastic, especially their front desk staff who gave us some great tips for local eateries and were always pleasant and quickly response when we needed anything for the room. The games room is great, features chess and some pool tables and a nice bar with some casual eats. They also offer Shake Shack right to the room which is very convenient if you've been busy all day and just need to grab a late lunch or evening snack. Besides that, the location is phenomenal, with underground parking very close by if you choose not to opt for valet parking, it's also a stones throw to take the L train, bus or even a quick jaunt to the Metra lines to Union Station. There are a ton of local shops nearby for pretty much anything you'd need, from pharmacy to five below or even a target, everything is within reach quickly from this location. It's even right across from the park which makes a great spot to wind down after a night sight seeing. The only minor critique I'd have of our room is that it didn't offer much of a view, but given the location there really is only one side of the hotel (facing the park) that would have a nice view anyways. So if a spectacular view of the city from where you're crashing for the night is a must, this might not suit you. That said, I'd recommend just going to the observation deck or the Sears tower and getting a much better view than any hotel to begin with if that's what you're looking for! As a tourist, this was the perfect spot for us to base out of and see as much of the city as we could, I was very impressed with the hotel overall and would happily stay here again, if you're looking for a luxurious place to stay without insane prices, this is it.

We had a very mixed experience. Overall I would not suggest staying here. It's a really beautiful place with such a cool vibe. Come have a drink, meal or just chill. Overnights are highly NOT recommended. Very expensive room with zero soundproofing. So loud! We had an issue with our first room (standing water in the bathroom) so got moved to a larger room with a view of an alley and the building across. 😔 Staff was helpful and kind. It's trying to be a fancy boutique hotel but really missing the mark in rooms and guest comfort.

I had a wonderful experience here! I won a free night through a company party and it did not disappoint. The front desk was very kind and funny upon check in and they also left me an amenity with a sweet and personalized note + drink vouchers for my stay. The rooftop is STUNNING. Probably one of the best views I've seen on a Chicago rooftop (plus I was there for the super blue moon). It was also talked about so highly by coworkers who have stayed here in the past. I am a huge fan of this property and with all my travels for work, hope I can be back in the future!

I didn't stay at the Chicago Artistic Association so I can not rate the rooms, but I visited their lobby restaurant many times and I love it. It's called the 'Drawing Room'. It's gorgeous gothic; it's warm and inviting. He staff is great. They were welcoming and kind. Tip them well, they deserve it. Good service really ads to the charm.

I stayed here in the fall of 2021 for a sight seeing trip to Chicago. The hotel room is fairly large and clean. We liked the decoration in the room, it has modern amenities but gives you a feel of staying at hotel 100 years ago. The hotel also have lots of interesting rooms thanks to its history, however I didn't explore much since my stay is fairly short and I spend the time exploring Chicago. The service is very good, I like how easy is to message the hotel for any need. The people on the ground floor are also very proactive at helping guests.

It’s certainly an interesting property with a unique interior design. The rooms are fairly small and dark. In fact, the lighting throughout the entire hotel is dark, with little natural light. Cindy’s patio still is a must see and one of the great views in the city. Great game room/ bar, as well. Solid location.

One of the best hotels I've ever been to. The convenience of location is unmatched. Spectacular amenities. Steps to The Bean, they accommodated early check-in and provided a souvenir/card/treats for our first visit. Access to Cindy's rooftop bar was clutch. Would definitely return.

Absolutely beautiful property. As a hotel guest you have access to Cindy’s rooftop with your key card. The view is beyond breathtaking both during the day and at night. The hotel itself is unique and the game room is always packed. Very very nice experience.

I recently stayed here for a long weekend and I don't think I'll return. I was disappointed that people who weren't paying guests also got to enjoy things like the drawing room/lobby, it made the room extremely loud and crowded - I didn't find a quiet place to read until early morning on a Monday when there was hardly anyone there. Also several of the venues/spaces had been cordoned off for private events - again, as a paying hotel customer it would have been nice to have some of these spaces private to hotel guests only. It was also much, much louder than I realized, which is not the vacation I was hoping to have. The game room + drawing room were so incredibly loud and I also had to listen to drunk guests on my floor who kept me up until 2am. Also they have some kind of weird vanilla air fresheners in the drawing room that are very strong and sickening. Lastly, I was really unimpressed by my room. The pictures look fabulous online (as they always do) but up close it was disappointing. They advertised that you received a robe in your room but the robe I received was literally falling apart and full of holes. Also the shower really sucked (rainfall shower head with unstable pressure + temperature and the water went EVERYWHERE, including the floor). It was just a meh experience and if you're looking for a more quiet hotel or even one that's not incredibly loud, this is not the place for you.

I had stayed here once last year and it was extremely underwhelming. However I decided to give it one more shot because my credit card had a promo with them! My stay this time has been great. Everyone is so friendly, which was not the case the first time I was here. Rooms are also clean and spacious. The only con is the elevators are extremely slow and you can hear the train going by every time.

  • 5/5 Chris P. 1 year ago on Google
Classic building with large comfortable rooms. Not totally up to date, but enough plugs for most travelers. Location is amazing and the bar on the roof is very well known. You may want to pull the privacy blinds or the sun in the morning may blind you.

Exceptional hotel stay. The hotel had a ton of charm and the staff were all delightful. In addition to being kind to young daughter they were extremely welcoming to our dog. Especially if traveling with a pet, it’s the best accommodation for location, friendliness and service. Bonus on a relaxed vibe lobby that offers refreshments without being pushy at all… just friendly and helpful. A stay is highly recommended.

Great rooms, great location, superb service, and awesome amenities. The price may look high, but its worth it. When you arrive, the Lobby will be on the second floor. Easy access by stairs or elevator. There is a large lobby area with plush seating. A bar is also on this floor, and it has a great vibe. There are dark colors and some games for entertainment. The building is older and downtown, so the rooms are on the smaller side. Since you should be spending most of your time out and about, this is not an issue. The main food focus is the rooftop bar. This is not to be missed! Tasty drinks and a view across the street to the Bean. I would offer that you won't be disappointed during your stay here.

My daughters and I spent a weekend here. We love that the hotel has a working space and a play room. The bar was also nice for getting together with friends. The room was nice but I do not like the Lincoln’s picture hanging in there. We also agreed that the Wi-Fi internet was not good comparing to all the Marriott hotels we have been to.

  • 4/5 John R. 9 months ago on Google
The location is excellent. The hotel staff was so helpful and friendly. The first person I interacted with was a doorman I think. He was awesome throughout the stay. So helpful and nice. Wish I remembered his name. The rooms are kind of on the small side and the shower was a bummer. The shower has no doors and the shower head is on the ceiling. There is just a small little glass wall next to you and the water goes all over the floor whenever someone showers. The beds are not very comfortable unless you like a really firm mattress. The hotel is like staying in a museum, which is very cool. The game room/bar on the lobby level is awesome. Cindy's is very cool with an amazing view. Having a Shake Shack on site is also very convenient. The location is about as central to everything as you can get. I really want to love this place. If I wasn't in pain after sleeping here for two days I'd come back, but I came, I saw, and I'll stay somewhere else and hope for more comfortable beds. Otherwise a fantastic spot.

We truly did our research before coming to stay in Chicago for a weekend in October. We were looking for a cozy, central, and beautiful spot to stay. This is IT! The hotel itself has a rich history and is beautifully preserved, yet updated. Dave, thank you for greeting us at the door and treating us like royalty for the weekend, we truly, truly appreciate it.

Amazing location closed to the Art institut and the Chicago Theater. Very charming, cozy and historic Hotel. The service by the front desk was outstanding especially by Dominic and Christian. All the team was very professional and so friendly. Our room was gorgeous with a beautiful view on the lake and the Bean. We also love the huge bathroom with a bath with the lovely bathrobes and slippers. The service delivered everyday by the housekeeping team was outstanding. We appreciate so much the Service, the food and the delicious cocktails at The Cindy’s restaurant on the rooftop and at the cherry circle room restaurant. Do not miss this two restaurants in this hotel .. a Must! We tried many hotels downtown Chicago but this one is a GEM ❤️

This hotel is in a great location. Within walking distance to Millennium Park and many restaurants and activities. It is very hard to find as there is no signage and driving isn't easy in downtown Chicago. The valet is on a side street. The hotel is not filled with light. Very dark and hard to see things. Hard to get around in at first but once you figure it out it's quite easy. My room was very quiet. Service was good. There is a busy games lounge you have to walk through to get to the front desk from the valet. Decor is cool. Elevators are good and you don't need to wait too long for one. There are two sets of elevators that go to different rooms, so you always have to be cognizant that you're choosing the right set of elevators. Rooms were clean and housekeeping was excellent with the one exception I am about to address. As a Hyatt Globalist I am supposed to receive complimentary bottled waters. Bizarrely, for no reason this property made is very difficult to get those waters. At check-in I asked for the bottles and they told me that they don't have any at the desk but they are already in my room. Upon discovering that none were in my room I had to call twice before finally receiving it. The next day housekeeping did not leave any in my room after cleaning, so again I had to call the front desk to request more water. It is such a small thing and to make me ask again and again, again and again, again and again was such a hassle an so unnecessary. I don't understand what they had to gain by making it difficult. Breakfast from room service was exceptionally good. Many choices and everything tasted great. One of the best hotel breakfast experiences!

Chicago Athletic Association was a super fun and relaxing place to stay. First of all- the location is stellar- right in the middle of downtown Chicago, close to everything you may like to explore. As for the building- the details taken to preserve the history of the building while creating an inviting space for the modern-day traveler made my time there like a scavenger hunt. To see the little things like leather washers for screws instead of metal and umbrellas stashed in our room (that we used the whole time as it rained while we were there) showed the thought that went into creating the space. Customer service staff was friendly and helpful- I was impressed by the crew that ran the show. We (two humans and one dog) were greeted kindly and felt very well taken care of. This is our go-to place now and can’t wait to be back. Thanks so much CAA!

The service was fantastic. The décor is very unique. Everyone from Dave at the Front door to the service staff were wonderful. I particularly liked the fact that you could text them to ask questions or ask for service. Will definitely be staying here during any trip to Chicago. Great experience, location, and service! Also, their game room is top notch and the rooftop bar provides a very nice view. Don't forget to get breakfast at the Drawing Room!

Stayed here for 5 nights as a getaway trip last month. PROS: The bed was extremely comfortable, location was perfectly central, soaps and shampoos were great, and the free filtered water service was nice. CONS: I feel like the reviews and pictures online are deceiving as I found this hotel mediocre in its entirety. The rooms are extremely small and the customer service was very poor. Checked into my room and it smelled of smoke, was told someone would come take me to my new room and it took them 30 mins to come up. Went upstairs to try out Cindy's and was turned away by a rude staff member who said it was too close to closing time. Won't stay here the next time I visit Chicago.

Beautiful hotel! Rooms are updated with modern amenities. Fresh and well appointed. We were there for my daughter's wedding and I skipped taking photos of the room, but it was amazing. We had a view of the Bean from our window. Robes, nice toiletries. Room service was lightening fast on that morning coffee. Fun game area. Bocce ball etc. Lots of great things in walking distance.

5 stars - Kristen & team made sure that this ranks up there in my best vacation experiences. You can't beat this location if you are here to explore the city. The property itself has a great vibe and so much to offer that you will never run out of things to do. It's an ideal hotel for celebrating special occasions. The staff puts a lot of effort to efficiently manage this dynamic place.

What a lovely place to stay! The atmosphere of the Chicago Athletic Association is calming and wonderful. The people that work here are kind and very helpful. The room was very comfortable. We had a GREAT room that did not have a view BUT WAS QUIET AND peaceful! The views for Chicago are outside! Get out and walk around, sleep in your room.

If you're a fan of art and architecture, this hotel is convenient to some of the best sight seeing opportunities in the city. In addition, the building itself has historical significance and is open to the public. Walking into the place feels like going back in time to the late 1900s. Whether you are there to stay at the hotel, eat at one of the restaurants, attend a catered event, or just appreciate the architecture, the friendly staff will make you feel like a VIP.

We stayed for 4 days and 3 nights with my 1 year old and it was amazing! We thought it wouldn’t be so toddler friendly but everyone was super nice and helpful! Rooms were nice and clean. Only thing was missing is storage! Our room had no dresser or nightstand with drawers. By the fridge they had tiny drawers but not big enough for clothes. We just kept our clothes in the luggage but other than that I would come back again. Great location too.

The service was excellent, the room was amazing. The location was perfect, right in the thick of things. We walked approximately 5 blocks down to the river for our 5:45pm architectural boat tour. The area was very safe. We enjoyed the walk. The employees here were extremely professional. We loved exploring this old athletic club: it's quirky to say the least. I hope to stay here every time I visit Chicago.

From the moment we gave our car keys to the valet I was totally comfortable. Our bags were taken care of and we were escorted to the lobby. This is no ordinary hotel. If you want boring or modern don’t come here. This place oozes personality. This place looks and feels like the place your super rich grandparents used to take you to when you were a kid! Loving it! Our room was clean and comfortable with all of the requirements we needed. King bed is super comfortable and so quiet here at night. This place is a must for anyone who wants to experience Chicago!

This hotel has quickly become our favorite place to stay during a Chicago winter. You cannot beat the ambiance of the Drawing Room or Game Room! Yes, the rooms are nice (though a bit small) - but you're staying here for access to Cindy's, the Milk Room, and the other unique offerings the property offers. A historic, unique, and stunning place to unwind in the Windy City.

The best hotel experience. The hotel is so beautiful and the service is amazing. You can get food and drink service 24 hours a day delivered to your room. When the bar closes you can get alcohol from the front desk and sit in the gorgeous library area with fireplaces. If you’re thinking about splitting your stay at multiple hotels, don’t. Just stay here! So many amenities and above and beyond service.

What a unique hotel. The standard rooms are pretty small, thankfully the weather was good and I only had to use the room to sleep and shower. This place does take some time to find your way around, exploring is the best way I found. JP at the front desk was a blast that our whole crew enjoyed and Dave at the door was always great as well. The best part about this hotel? Location location location. Right across the street there's the "bean", millennium park, then a little further is river walk. You can spend hours/nights exploring around thos area and still miss things. Definitely a wonderful hotel, I hope I get a chance to come back.

Nice atmosphere and amazing architecture, but horrendous service. We sat at a table in the game room and we’re told someone would be with us shortly and no one came. We booked a reservation for top golf and no one came to take our drink order. We were told by one hostess that we could play shuffleboard and then was told by another hostess after 5 minutes of playing that we had to leave. As a customer staying at this hotel the customer service was absolutely terrible considering how much it costs to stay here. The only positive customer service that I received was from a gentleman when I first arrived. This person we very helpful and even walked me up to the checkin desk. I also saw this same gentleman through my stay and he was very nice so he is the only reason I am giving this hotel 3 stars.
