I wanted to love this place. I really did. I loved the aesthetics. The crowd was fun on Tuesday night dance night. The Chicago Cellar Boys played great sets, and it felt like I had gone back in time. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned in their reviews, I had an unpleasant experience with the bald bartender with the long beard. Would I return? Maybe - but I would avoid ordering anything from the bald bartender with the long beard. I wouldn't dare to inconvenience him by politely asking for a martini again.

This is an old bar with classic decoration and fascinating history, but the staff are very rude and arrogant who do not respect any of the customers.😕 We went here at 9 pm. People were standing in line in front of the door. After 30 minutes of waiting, we entered by paying $15 per person in cash. 💸Note that before going to this bar, be sure to get cash because they do not accept credit cards. The bar was very crowded and there was no place to sit or even stand. The band started playing music at 9:30 and played memorable Italian and French music. The music group did a good job.🥳 The mobile staff this time were 3 people, two women, one of whom had many tattoos and the other who was younger. The younger lady did not behave well. A bald man with a long beard also worked there and he really had a mental problem. He yelled at the customers who made a mistake with all his heart, yes, he really yelled within an inch of their faces, which we thought was a fight several times. Almost all of our good experiences were turned into bad experiences by the waiters and staff there.

Wonderful place to come to. Thursday night there is a live orchestra that plays jazz music and some people get up to swing dance. It’s so cool and fun to watch. The drinks are great and the prices are reasonable. They don't serve food hear and its cash only. Most nights they do have cover. There is an ATM inside. The history is really interesting as Al Capone used to come here quite a lot back in the day. The place was also used in one of the episodes of Chicago PD that aired on January 2015 as a spot the drug cartel hung out at, and was referred as Al Capone’s old hangout spot. Great spot to hang solo or to bring a date. Definitely a spot to be checked out. You’ll be glad you did.

This place is absolutely fantastic! The music was hot, the drinks were cold (and strong!). Don't forget your cash, but there is an ATM in the front in the worst case. Quite a few people were dressed in vintage clothes to come listen to the band. It was a lot of fun.

A really special place to come to. Thursday are my favorite with the orchestra playing jazz music. People come up to swing dance and its really fun to watch. The drinks are great and the prices are reasonable. They don't serve food hear and its cash only. Most nights they do have cover. But they have an ATM inside. The history is really interesting as Al Capone used to come here quite a lot back when he was alive. Bring a date or come by yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Great experience. We arrived at 11pm on a Friday and were seated immediately. We may have gotten lucky but it was great and a perfect view to the performers. The band was fantastic, as was the overall vibe. Believe the hype; we had an amazing time. Oh, my favorite thing about this place? The host/manager, when introducing the band for their last set and later last song, reiterated that we're all here for the music. Not for your personal conversations and distractions. I love that. I would give 10 stars to anyone, and any place, that puts their musicians over the rudeness of its loud patrons.

Outstanding venue. I was only in Chicago for 3 days but I did my research and knew as a live music lover I had to check it out. The vibe was exactly what I expected. I had a barstool next to where one of the servers was getting drinks from the bartender and we became buds (thanks, Sarah!). I told her where I was going next and she knew the bartender and wrote me a note to take to him so he would take care of me and he did. The bartender here was also very good. Great drinks! Music was fantastic and made me think I was in an episode of Boardwalk Empire.

LOVED the vibe!! Tiny place, very crowded. If you want a table during the live music, you have to get there early. The band was great, I will go again! My only complaint was they were strict on requiring a mask at the entrance (which I forgot in the car and had to go back) and then nobody was wearing one once you step 2 feet inside. A pretty ridiculous rule to me.

Absolutely one of the best nights out ever! Went to see the Chicago Cellar Boys and it was incredible. Everything you could hope for and more for music fans of the 1920s and 30s jazz era. The place was beautiful and full of history!

I'm a jazz lover, so I had to check this place out for the sake of the history alone, and unfortunately, history is what best describes this place. It's really small, standing room only, too old to clean, and the servers aren't sanitary. I actually watched one take his serving apron in the restroom and wipe his hands on it on the way in and out of the restroom. It still attracts great performances, but it doesn't attract a solely jazz crowd. It's hard to sit back and enjoy the music because it attracts a very mixed crowd of jazz enthusiasts, rowdy over-boozed night life enthusiasts who talk over the music and oddly some folks who actually came to drink while they get some work done. Save your cover fee and parking money and head to the jazz showcase where the staff is friendly, sanitary, the music is the focus, and the patrons are well behaved and well dressed.

Our server was a little bit too grabby on the drinks. My son and I had old-fashions which really did not taste. Good at all. Poorly made, or poor whiskey. Our server kept trying to take her drinks when we weren't finished lol. Nice try honey..... The ambiance was good. And the music was exceptional. A good time was had by my wife, son and I. This is said to have been Al Capone's speakeasy. Cover charge was $20 per person. Then drinks on top of that. Ran us about $110 beyond cover charge.

This place never disappoints, good selection of drinks and great bands playing live. They could probably up the service and accept cards at some point. But love every time I come it’s just a great experience for music lovers.

INCREDIBLE VENUE. Musicians on Sunday night were absolutely incredible. The entire place is a blast from the past. Bar staff not rude, but just busy. Cash-only but they do have an ATM. My suggestion, go on a Sunday when they put the musicians behind the bar instead of the regular stage.

Legendary spot for great jazz and related musical delights. The wait staff and drink delivery was top notch as well as affordable.... but let's be real. You're there for the music. We preferred one of the round booth options over the bar or bar seats. An amazing spot to enjoy jazz on any night of the week (they are open).

Green Mill was my first Jazz club experience and I will definitely be back! $15 cover and drinks are about $10 each which isn’t bad! Music was great but it was a bit crowded (it was Friday night). They made me the best amaretto sour!

A wonderful place to experience live music in Chicago! Full of history, charm, and character, it has been open for over a century and was once frequented by Al Capone. We’ve been here to see jazz, which was lovely, and a comedy show featuring local comedian and puppet influencer Chad the Bird, where he gave a moving eulogy for Tina Turner. It’s cash only, so remember to come prepared!

Historic, iconic, fun! If the walls could talk. It’s a step back in time to visit the Green Mill. The live music is fabulous. The dance floor small and packed. Get there early if you want a seat. Cover charge Thursday night. Drinks not great. Glad to have had this experience! Highly recommend!

I’ve lived in Chicago for 12 years and I just went here for the first time. It was amazing. Get there early for seating. They don’t serve food but they allow you to order in. Easy street parking.

Best Jazz & Cocktail lounge around. Always appreciate the diversity of sounds and feels at the Green Mill whenever I’m in Chicago. Amazing history, fantastic people, always great live music and a great end to an evening every time.

If you love Jazz this is the place to be. Just make sure you don't go there when you're hungry because they don't serve food. Plus it's cash only!

Really cosy jazz bar in the heart of Uptown. I went with a few friends on a Monday evening and it was perfect. Not too crowded. It is a cash only establishment by the way. There also was a cover charge of $10. Overall nice place.

A fabulous slice of yesterday’s Chicago. We went on a Sunday night and the jazz trio was amazing, even though they played behind the bar and not on the main stage. Bring cash as that is all they take. Great atmosphere and Tom, the bar tender was amazing.

Lovely venue, beautifully decorated, great performers. Unfortunately, the male staff behind the bar was quite rude but the female table staff went above and beyond. No food here.

Beautiful place to be. The drinks are good and priced decently (cash only). The music plus the history in this place, makes you feel at home especially if you’re from here. Started at the bar but you’ll always find a way closer to the stage as it does get packed. Either way, you’ll always have a good seat.

This is an update to my previous 5 star review. The Green Mill is an excellent place. I go on Friday's after work from 5ish-8pm. There is no cover (other than tipping the musician and bar tenders!) and Chris Foreman is on the organ playing amazing music. Chill but it does fill up towards the middle/end as people start to come for the concert after. The reason I take stars off my rating is because they close their door so early sometimes on Fridays when Chris plays. For example, I showed up around 7:10 pm today to meet a friend for a drink. They wouldn't let me sit (even though my friend was already there) because they were already seating for the 8pm show. If this happened once, it wouldn't be a huge deal but it happens time and time again. So, if you want to go see Chris, show up by like 6:45 or don't go at all. I also go on Saturday's around 2:15 for the 3pm Paper Machete skits. That gets really packed and is sometimes standing room only. It's a fun time and no cover. I know they also have great bands that play at other times - almost always a cover so check their website.

Came here for the history of the place, but stayed for the vibes. The jazz was great. It's a little, dark, somewhat crowded speakeasy type spot and it was a great way to close out the night. $10 cover on Monday to get in and then just grab a seat if you can.

The place is very small because you need to do a row and wait, when there's a show they charge 15 bucks at the time of entering and then quickly search for chairs because there's no ha ha and enjoy the show the drinks are normal nothing woah and the bathroom is in the back. Pd: Don’t forget your Id.

Such an amazing experience. We went Thursday night when they had the swing orchestra. The band was awesome and the place was packed. Even with a full place, the servers and bar staff were on point. Great music, great atmosphere, great service. What more can you ask for?

"Green Mills" is fascinating. There are evenings when, when the Jazz or Swing band is on, it feels like traveling back in time to the 20's and 30's. The story goes that the famous gangster "Al Capone" used to be a regular customer of this place, and he even has secret doors and passages (not open to the public). So if you are one of those who is inclined to know historical places, "Green Mills" is one of those that you must visit.
