Finally made it to this vegetarian/vegan restaurant. I got the chicken fried steak. My friend got the mushroom loaf. The mushroom loaf was great! It was super fantastic. I thought my chicken fried steak was way too hard. It was really tuff. It had good flavor. It was crunchy on the ouside but hard on the inside. I'd never order it again. The veggies and mashed potatoes were really good. I tried the peanut butter puck for dessert. That was good! I'll go back sometime and try other menu items. This is a really neat place.

So delicious! I went here for the first time with a vegan and had no idea how much fun and tasty this place would be. The tapioca non-milkshakes are to die for!! Staff is friendly and funny and we had a great time.

Great place! The service is amazing. They take out an automatic tip for their servers which I think is really ethical. Also when I when they made it clear that they're a card only place. So Leave your cash at home. They have a HUGE menu of different things to choose from. I had the titanic burger with waffle cut fries witch was very 😋 delicious. Will be visiting again!

Wow! I’m highly satisfied with this place. We ordered so many things off the menu everything was so delicious and did my body right! I highly recommend this place for some good clean eating vegan food. EVERYTHING was delicious. Was worth the hour Drive and hour traffic. It’s a diner so the atmosphere is a diner atmosphere. It was really loud in there and I enjoy a more peaceful setting. That would not stop me from dining in. I had a great experience with great customer service. Food came out hot and fresh too. I love, love, love, they use seitan as a vegan protein it’s one of the top 3 healthiest proteins to use along with mushrooms, veggies, chickpeas, and beans. We tried: Country fried Steak with potatoes and Vegetables Chili with Quinoa Thai Chili Wings Cheese Fries Gyro Cinnamon Bun And none of it was shy of anything all goodness. Wow (I have to always put this disclaimer I meditate a lot and is in tune with my mind, body, and spirit and keeps me on the highest vibrations and I always have the best experiences because of that) Street parking you have to pay for so keep that in mind. Also for heavy users of soy. I use my body for my research. So these statements are something to consider if you find yourself having these symptoms. that soy and dairy is linked to multiple cancers…endocrine disorders, infertility, breast cancer in both men and women, soy contains high levels of phytic acids which withdraw nutrients when processed by your body. Soy is harmful to children. Please do your research. Listen to your body that is the best research. When you get done eating you should not feel bad with gas, stomach cramps, tiredness, irritability, headaches, inflammation in muscles and joints. For those who eat Dairy, it causes mucus and inflammation in the body as does soy… that’s why you always having running noses, sneezing, allergies, and any disease in the body. Let’s create a world that eat healthy foods that’s good for the mind, body, and soul. Chicago Diner is paving the way! Wholeness and Love Always! These photos don’t do justice as I was so excited and eating everything and yes I ate most by myself. I only eat once every 24hrs.

As someone who's been vegetarian for over two decades, it was extremely refreshing to finally see a menu with so many (or rather, only) vegetarian and vegan options. Loved the buffalo wings and I'll definitely be back to try out more dishes from the menu!

My first ever vegan diner. Quite tasty and didn't miss meat. Very friendly staff as well. Dessert options looked good though we didn't try any as we were stuffed. Gratuity is added automatically which is nice.but it's not included in the prices. I would have preferred that. Also they do add another tip line in the end which can be confusing. It should be about clearer and just included in the price.

This was a really chill diner. The menu is completely vegan but will substitute some Dairy (cheese and such) for a fee. The atmosphere is somewhat rockabilly and the staff is very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. There is a Children’s Menu available and the place is extremely family friendly which is great. The food is stellar and very flavorful. They also have a decent selection of beer and wine.

They have a good selection of vegan comfort food. Loved their Cuban sandwich but the pea soup that came with it was pretty bland. Tried the truffle mushroom lentil loaf but wasn’t too impressed. Our son’s Reuben sandwich was OK. Due to limited seating capacity, you have to make reservations, and they tell you that you have an hour to eat your meal. Their price point is already high and a 20% gratuity will also be included in your bill.

This was our first trip to Chicago in almost two years due to the pandemic, so it was top priority to visit the Chicago Diner. It was worth the wait! Being vegan, comfort food is hard to come by (at least, not in Chicago) and this totally hit the spot. We maxed out, and everything we ordered was 🤌🏼🤌🏼 Pictured are the spinach dip and country fried steak. Even the cocktails were good! I 100% recommend the lavender gimlet. We also got a salted caramel “milk”‘shake to share later, and it didn’t even last through our car ride, it was so good! Make a reservation, as their space is small! Great COVID precautions, and our server Mike L was a total delight, even being mega busy and having to deal with all the food we ordered. Not to be dramatic, but I’d die for this place.

The Chicago Dinner is a true veggie delight! From the diverse menu to the cozy ambiance, it's a top-tier choice for vegetarians. The Wild Mushroom Risotto is a must-try, bursting with umami goodness. The commitment to local, sustainable ingredients is commendable. The staff is attentive and passionate, enhancing the dining experience. While not the most budget-friendly, the value is justified. The dessert selection could be more diverse, but overall, it's a haven for plant-based gastronomy in the heart of the Windy City.

Had the Portobello prime burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was delicious with great umami flavors, fresh produce, and this savory crunchy topping over the burger. The fries were probably the best sweet potato fries I've had, all wonderfully crisped outside soft inside. Really blown away by how creamy the hot chocolate was. Gratuity is included; they use a handheld paperless checkout device. Everyone was very chill and friendly, loved the warm, even if a bit loud (for my ND ears), community atmosphere the Chicago Diner embodies.

The Chicago Diner is superb. I think most of the food here is great. They are well known for their Reuben and shakes. I have also had jalapeño poppers here that were phenomenal. I think when you come here you can really count on delicious food that considers flavor and texture, that happens to be vegan. I would absolutely recommend.

Chicago diner is not only one of the best vegan restaurants, but an excellent diner. I have taken many omnivores here and they all thought that the food was fantastic. You can’t go wrong with the Ruben or the chicken fried steak. The fries with cheesy sauce cannot be beat. Highly recommend.

It was our first time visiting on Sat, Oct. 28, and we enjoyed everything. (It was worth every minute of the 2 hour walk from Millennium Station to the Lakeview/Boytown location). The food was yummy. Service was great, fast, and friendly. They warned us of the 20% gratuity added automatically, when we were seated. Bonus: We enjoyed seeing the staff's Halloween costumes and loved watching neighborhood kids in their costumes coming in to get candy every few mins. The food: A brunch item, the cinnamon roll French toast, was superb. The gyro was fantastic...they cooked the handcut fries just the way I like them. The chocolate pumpkin cheesecake (a seasonal item) was scrumptious. And I am still daydreaming about that fabulous chocolate shake. I can't wait to go back to try more.

Delicious! The Reuben tasted like the real thing and the Thai Chili wings were packed with flavor. I think if I had someone make food like this for me I could stay vegan for the rest of my life.

Delicious vegetarian food and very tasty shake. I went with the Thai wings and the cookie dough peanut butter shake, it was very good. The staff was friendly and organized. I wish they I included pictures in their menu for some of the items.

Oh man this place is good. It’s comfort food. It’s vegan. It’s amazing. Had poutine and hot wings and they hit the spot. The wings were quite hot. I’ve had better poutine in Canada but this was the best I’ve had in the States. The location is quite small but the staff did a great job with following health and safety protocols and made everyone feel safe. Can’t wait to come back in the future.

I have tried the Chicago diner twice when in town in Chicago. It’s just not my favorite food, their dishes could use some extra spices and more flavor. It seems everything I order is a little bland even though there’s so many different things in it. The spicy fried chicken sandwich was overwhelmingly hot in the sense that all you taste is red chili flakes and nothing else. However their milkshakes are absolutely amazing and you have to try them if you come.

The chicken wings are amazing (they are not chicken but they taste like chicken). The hamburgers are also great. I wanted something different last time I went and they recommended the bowl of their scrambled tofu deluxe. It had black beans, quinoa, kale and tofu. Very healthy and hearty.

A coworker recommended this place to me as a visiting vegan. It was great! We ordered the chicken parm, Cuban, and reuben for food. We also ordered three shakes - pumpkin pie, mint chocolate chip, and chocolate peanut butter. We all loved our meals, even the non-vegans. I had the Cuban and it was really flavorful and hearty. Between the peppers, cheese, and seitan, it had a really good combo of sour, salty, savory flavors. The textures were great as well. Everything you'd hope for in a Cuban! I wish I could go back tonight!

An “ok” Vegan Food experience. 3/5 & this is why: I will start with the food rating. My orders were: BBQ Wings, the „Reuben Sandwich “, „Mc n Teese“ , a coffee and a lemonade. My favorite were the BBQ Wings with a side of ranch and salary. The Taste was a 5/5 perfect BBQ Sauce! The texture was more like a 3/5, could have been a little more “Authentic”. Summed up, a 4/5. Next up were the Mc & teese, due to the fact that I have had many comparisons, this dish was not extraordinary; 3/5. Last and least, I asked for a recommendation of the house & they served the “ Radical Reuben” Sandwich. For the first time in a long time, I did not finish my plate and stopped half way through. Unfortunately I could not enjoy this recommended dish. The Bread was good, crusty and tasty, unfortunately I could hardly taste the rest on the sandwich because of the two dominant ingredients. Vegan cheese and sauerkraut. The sandwich was dripping in cheese with a side note of bitter sauerkraut. Maybe less cheese would allow to taste the rest of the components on the sandwich. 2/5. Regarding the Atmosphere and Service: The atmosphere of the place was nice, it gave a 70’s/80’s look of a diner and the music was also not too loud and therefore enjoyable. The service was ok. Our waitress was nice, though maybe not too attentive. Our drinks were empty in the first 5 Minutes and were never asked to be refilled within the following 30 Min. Nevertheless it was a ok experience. So far, I would not necessarily recommend this restaurant as one of my top choices, but perhaps I will visit it again and try different options of the HUGE VEGAN Selection. That is one thing I have to mention! There are plenty of options! And I will and can so far recommend the BBQ Wings with a side of ranch! Thanks for supporting the customers decision, to go against animal cruelty and offering vegan alternatives. For more impressions, have a look at the attached videos and pictures. Take care & Bon Appetit!

A must visit if you're a vegan heading to Chicago or if you want great tasting food and extremely friendly staff. Everything is made vegan by deafult which I absolutely loved because I knew I could have anything the menu offered The spinach artichoke dip was simply the best. I'm literally still craving it. I also asked for a recommendation on what entree to try and I was not disappointed with the Reuben. Portion sizes were big, I had leftovers for the next day. Location is great, 20mim subway ride from downtown and if you're hitting up a Cubs game it's a super short walk to the stadium.

Absolutely phenomenal. I had the Karma burger with a gf bun, probably the best veggie burger I've had since it doesn't rely on beans or chickpeas to be textured and solid. And the mint chocolate shake was soooooo good. I still can't believe it's vegan. I loved this place.

Excellent staple of the Chicago Restaurant scene. I haven’t been in almost 8 years but it was as good as I remember. The Rueben is incredible! As good as any meat Rueben i have ever had. The ‘wings’ are amazing. How they get the texture and flavor of a wing with the seitan is amazing. The service was very very good. Cole did a great job with the menu, keeping drinks full and attending to us during our meal. The shakes are delicious and recommended as a post dinner treat!

  • 5/5 Dhruv P. 10 months ago on Google
I would recommend their dishes that have vegan meats (such as seitan) over the others. The Thai chili wings and both sandwiches tasted great, but we weren’t fans of the pancakes. Thai chili wings - tough, steak-like seitan strips with a light breading and sesame. Not spicy at all. It tasted delicious, light teriyaki-like flavoring on the seitan flavor. Philly cheesesteak - WOW. Forget the cheese and vegetables, the seitan in the cheesesteak was the real star. Tender and flavorful in each bite. The fries with it were thin cut and crispy and not overly seasoned.

Ordered to pickup. Because of “Memorial Day”, food was not ready for 20 more minutes. Nice staff. However, the Banh Mi sandwiches we ordered were soggy and the sauce in them was very salty. Luckily we had salad as a side order so it’s balanced out a bit.

Y'all, Chicago Diner is the bomb. All of their food is incredible, and I always want to order way more than I can possibly eat. It's such a wonderful oasis for vegetarian and vegan pals, and meat-eating friends have enjoyed eating here too. Highly recommend!! (The reuben and the milkshakes are great).

Exemplary in every aspect, food, quality and service. The staff at The Chicago Diner shines in their KINDNESS & CARE! Thank you so much for your help in the last year it's been way way beyond the requirements for a restaurant and has been greatly appreciated in the last year. I can't thank you enough.

What's not to like! Chicago Diner is THE vegetarian institution in Chicago. Love the place and the vibe. The Reuben and lately the Gyros are our most favorite dishes. A considerable drive for us, 3 hours round trip from where we live, but always OH SO worth it. Thanks Chicago Diner Team! Keep up the good work!

Anyone would love this. It's cute, quaint and gives off that artistic vibe. I was promised over 8 years ago before moving to Florida that I would get to go here. Back on a visit to Chicago, and WOW, absolutely amazed. The food was delicious, from the coconut curry, the the Reuben and the portobello mushroom melt. The pumpkin cheesecake special was ok, nothing to write home about.

I thought this place was cool! I really loved the vibes and the service. They’re entirely a vegan restaurant (although they have a few dairy cheese options) and the gratuity is automatically included (but you can leave extra, too!). I had the Reuben, a pumpkin milkshake and the wings, which were all pretty good.

Went here straight after arriving from London, jetlagged and grumpy. Both the greeter and server were really friendly, kind, and helpful with our questions. Our server in particular was lovely, and even recognised us when we went back on our last day in Chicago! Genuinely great customer service, tasty food and a relaxed fun atmosphere. Will definitely be back next time we're in town!

Great plant based comfort food. A true original, in every sense. Been taking the grandkids here for a decade. And get the Reuben, always. Until you need to check out the rest. Their Reuben is incredible.

  • 5/5 travis a. 3 years ago on Google
The sandwiches are super tasty and come with a variety of fries. Nice selection of draft beer as well. We had the stir fry, which is slightly sweet but quite yummy as well as the mushroom lentil loaf which was excellent. It came with green beans and roasted potatoes both excellent! They offer shakes as well and nice selection of California (2), Italian (3), and French (2) wines along with a full bar. It was noisy when we were there

  • 5/5 Jordan H. 3 years ago on Google
This place is a Chicago classic for good reason. If you’re okay with a wait, you won’t be disappointed. They go above and beyond to create unique plant-based dishes to combat the misconception that plant-based diets are restricting and boring. The staff is a fantastic mix of the most friendly weirdos. There really is something for everyone at Chicago Diner!

  • 3/5 Jenna E. 3 years ago on Google
the food tastes great! I wish they would i be a bit more creative and use things other than seitan which isn’t gluten free. The reuben and buff wings are delicious, but ordering take out, even though we got there before the food was ready, having it in the containers made it all soggy, unless it was previously. also they over did it on the cheese and toppings in the sand which so it it was extremely messy and wet. overall decent !

It’s a classic, famous vegan restaurant, and I think it lives up to the hype. Small but adorable, the food was delicious (definitely not mega-healthy plant based, but so so tasty), and a landmark vegan restaurant that’s accessible in a way most others aren’t because it’s affordable! They’re kind of known for their vegan milkshakes, and they are fantastic. It’s definitely a restaurant you have to visit in Chicago, worthy of a stop on any vegan’s or non-vegan’s food tour of the city or the county, and community at this location is so fun and cool.

Food was great staff was very friendly. However I was very disappointed to see a 20% tip added to the bill and then once they checked it out asked for additional. If you plan to drive parking is scarce in the area especially when an event such as pride in going on.

Went around noon on the 4th of July without making a reservation - we didn't think you would need one for lunch on a Sunday. Wrong! Should have called ahead, but we didn't know this place was so popular. And with good reason! Luckily, we were able to get take-out, after the hostess told us that she certainly could seat us...at 5:00 p.m! We ordered a big pile of food, drinks, and dessert since we are a vegetarian and two vegans on vacation. We loved all of it. Not a bad item in the bunch. I had the Original Dagwood hoagie and my friends both ordered the Cuban sandwich. They also had apps and dessert and loved them. If you're eating take-out, make sure to get utensils and also check your order before you leave. They gave me French dressing for my salad when I ordered oil and vinegar, and they also accidentally gave us someone else's mac and cheese, since it was in our bag and we didn't order it. I would definitely go back again, but I'll call ahead and reserve a table!
