Today makes my second time coming to this hospital for my mother this year and I would, with out a doubt, not recommend this hospital. The level of competency when it comes to scheduling and communication at this hospital is horrid. Which, don’t worry, I’ll break it down for you all since I now have AT LEAST a 5 hour wait until my mother is seen. Let’s start with the first procedure. It took place a month ago for my mother which entailed her being put under general anesthesia. I’ll make this one short and bypass how they told her she can have visitors just for the visitors to be denied. We can omit how they sent us on a wild goose chase because the staff didn’t know where we were supposed to be. We can omit the fact that the staff we came across for help would rather speak to us as children rather than listen to what we were here for in whole, we can even omit the fact that we got there at 10 am and the 1 Visitor wouldn’t have been okay to leave until 8 PM because of delay. But we can briefly mention how even when the patient was to stay over night and was in bed rest, even the fact that the patient was not supposed to eat or move for 6 hours was not communicated between staff. The visitor who was addressed as a child by most of the day staff had to relay the information to the night staff.. I will say though, that the night staff was A LOT better than the day. But we can talk about today’s visit. My mother has a check in today, which involves her being put on anesthesia again. We were told that she would be on “twilight” but a little bit stronger. So although she wouldn’t be knocked out like a GA does, she’d still be put under so she had me drive her. Now, her appointment was for 9am and we arrived at 8am. We live 24 miles away so you know we left the house around 730am. Just for us to arrive to check in and they tell us that her appointment was canceled and rescheduled for 2 PM. So not only do they wait until we arrived to let us know that her appointment was rescheduled for 5 hours later. BUT, when we go to the waiting room because we’re waiting to here back from the dr. We’re told that although her appointment was changed from 9am with twilight to 2pm with general anesthesia, she also is not allowed to have any guests Abbas suggested that I, her guest, wait in her vehicle for the next 5+ hours. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think anyone should be expected to drive themselves 24 miles after a being brought up from general anesthesia. Nor, do I think it’s professional to cancel and reschedule a patients procedure without telling them until they arrive. Waste of gas, time, money, and my patience.

I had an appointment to see Dr. Peter B. Veldman, an ophthalmologist, at this facility in January 2020. I needed a second consult for dry eye. His staff spent a good deal of time with me and he, at best, spent about 10 minutes examining me. While I am aware he enjoys a good reputation, he was unfriendly, seemed bored and disinterested in my plight and was noticeably anxious to leave. If you do not mind an impersonal physician with no humor, then he will be fine for you. This is the first physician at the University of Chicago I would not recommend, although, as I say, I am certain he is talented. I cancelled my next appointment. I will not work with physicians who appear indifferent.

I visit the DCAM building often for my eyes and have had to have two eye surgeries there. Let me start off by praising these nurses. They are so professional, compassionate and caring. I felt like their top priority. If I could've I'd have hugged each one individually. There's one I'd like to speak on in particular, in recovery. Her name was Nora, she never left my side. Every time I woke up she was right there and so attentive and gentle with me. It was the most amazing feeling. Just the culture there in general. Dr. Farooq was my surgeon, also extremely compassionate and attentive. Overall it was an amazing experience and I am so grateful. I highly recommend. My team was truly the dream team and I felt extremely blessed to have had them. Thank you all!!!!

I had a pleasant experience for my first visit. The best way to check in for an appointment is at the front desk in-person due to issues with their online check-in system. Dr. J Hwang answered any questions I had during my visit.

I saw Dr. Auffinger the neurology department, I was highly disappointed with her services. She never examined my legs and I explained to her my leg leg gives out , due to my injury. She never touched me. Prescribed a medication and gave me a return appointment in 3 months, if that’s not horrible her office called to schedule another appointment which was over a month later. So no appointment for at least 4 months. She did send me for a nerve case study, that’s it. I will not be seeing this doctor again. This doctor assist, did much much more than she did. I do not recommend this doctor. They are paid all this money from our insurance, and she never examined me. She was in and out of the room in 2 minutes. I will not return, for my return appointment. Disappointed patient.

I have been bringing my son for over 20 years, and I also have Dr.'s here. My son & I have always been treated with respect, kindness and compassion. The best care is exactly what we have experienced, the Dr.s, nurses, aids and on down to housekeeping are always knowledgeable , and professional. I will always be thankful for all they have done for my son and me ❤

I come here from out of state to see specialists. I always get good care and the physicians are top of their class. And since I'm driving 2 hrs to get there, it's nice to know that they always keep my appointments on time. They really make you feel like you're being treated by a team of some of the best doctors in the world. UChicago Medicine is in a completely different class than what I can find locally. Only docking one star because they still make you wear masks while inside.

The colorectal and gastro departments are the worst! I have not experienced such poor service and horrible scheduling in all of my life. Apparently one person schedules the surgeries; Maria. Her last name must be casper because she is a ghost at this point! Aside from them messing up my second appointment where I was supposed to see Dr. S but she had a conference in the afternoon (you would think that a place will call you to move your appointment up that day, but i guess not this place! Now i finally do see the doctor instead of someone who repeats my same appointment from day 1(believe that they still billed me for the 2nd app even though it was all the SAME INFO from the 1st app), i cant be seen until end of december and into the new year! This place is full of excuses and not much else! I cant believe these people are in charge of scheduling in the health care industry. It is appalling. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS IF YOU CAN! However; if you like being jerked around, given attitude, or excuses over and over again for incompetence. By all means, this is the place for you! I like people who are good at their jobs, take things seriously, and dont expect you to wait 3 weeks just to schedule an appointment.

Pros: The doctors are highly qualified! Cons: It gets VERY expensive very quickly: 1. I came into the fatty liver disease center with elevated liver enzymes but otherwise completely normal. That first visit resulted in over $2,000 dollars in charges for some ordinary blood tests!!!! At another hospital similar tests cost $200. 2. The doctors are very aggressive in testing (even when the testing isn't useful). A special form of MRI (~$1000) was requested when the treatment would not depend on the results at all. This was also not canceled when my ONLY symptom (elevated liver enzymes) returned to normality. 3. Expect to pay a lot here and get your testing done elsewhere where you can get the same tests done at a fraction of the cost.

Care is often good to great, but make CERTAIN you bring the number-letter address of the specialty/service of your appointment. It is NOT provided in the detailed info for most/all of them on the UCMed/DCAM website.

Was in for a procedure which required 23 hour stay. All of the staff from the security guard when I arrived (at 5:15am!) to the nurses, interns, medical professionals, doctors and others! were terrific. The procedure went well and the post op care was excellent. The positive attitudes and obvious competence of staff was on display with every interaction. Thanks everyone!

Firstly, the Cardiology Department physicians and their personal nurses are excellent, world class. The Hospital facilities and operating equipment that the Cardiology Physicians use is world class. The rooms on the Coronary Floor are excellent and well equipped. The nurses in the pre op patient prep area are excellent, as is the equipment in that area. However the MA's that administer the drips in pre op had issues trying to stick the drips into my arm on all my procedures. The nurses that assist the Physicians in the cardiac operating area are excellent as well as the nurses in in the post op area. The issues that occurred in my several stays in the Hospital occurred on the Cardiac care floor after my procedures. Most of the nurses were good. However, after fasting the night before each of my procedures that were performed in the morning, I didn't get to my cardiac floor room by noon. In each case the lunch that was ordered by the nurse never arrived despite a number of calls by the rooms nurse. I was famished and very weak by the time dinner came, That was 24 hours without food. The Hospital needs to work on the training personnel that administer the pre op sticks. And most importantly the hospital needs to insure that patients fasting overnight receive a meal immediately after they get to their room.

You cannot reach anyone at the DCAM pharmacy on Friday or Monday. The automated system sends you in circles and I will be writing to corporate due to not being able to get a refill on insulin. This is a life of death situation.

They tell you just to double up on pain medication while you're waiting weeks for them to schedule surgery to remove your cancerous tumor that's growing and spreading, one star is more than they deserve.

👍👍 I’m actually flabbergasted at how incredible of an experience this was for me. This is the absolute first time I had a covid test of any kind. So I was already apprehensive as I was going in. I didn’t know what to expect. Then, to find that it was self administered. I got slightly more anxious. That...
