I'm a medical professional and this ER is awful. It lacks communication, compassion and timely care. I took my non-English speaking mother here for a possible spinal cord injury in a wheelchair. The experience was demoralizing, a waste of time, money, and left us with no dignity. 1. The parking lot was full so I had to pull to the side to wheel her in. No translator, no courtesy speaker warning about needing to move the vehicle, and no directions for alternative parking were offered. I came out with a ticket on my vehicle. 2. While we did get a quick assessment and CT scan, nobody gave us an update on the results and plan. We got an update from MyChart learning of the results after a few hours. It would have been great to get an update from someone in person after sitting in the ED for 6+ hours. The hospital was probably full so why make us sit there with no information? Either admit or discharge... 3. The nursing staff did nothing for my mother's pain and didn't assist her to go to the bathroom while in a wheelchair ultimately leading to an accident. My mother was embarrassed and in tears. I ultimately made the decision to take her to the urgent care nearby after reading the CT results. The urgent care clinic provided much better service and compassion. We have since left the IU hospital system entirely and have chosen one where patients can receive better access to care. I do not recommend this ED.

By far the worst hospital I’ve ever been too! Came by ambulance got out in the waiting room. 5 hrs goes by they put me in the er hallway on a bed I’m in pain and they refused to put me in a room so I could comfortably wait for a doctor to treat me I asked the nurse to remove the iv they put in and they wouldn’t I am not paying for a hospital bill to be placed in a hallway listening to all the noise at the nurse station so I had to remove the iv myself and leave

I broke my right leg playing hockey and immediately went to the UI health ER as they're my primary care. Everyone was polite and friendly. The security helped me get inside as I was barely mobile. The front desk was friendly and knowledgeable. All the medical staff, nurses, nursing assistants, paramedics, and radiologists were all pleasant and happy to have quick conversations with me to keep my mind off the huge pain I was in. They were all professional even with what appeared to be a crushing number of people in the ER. As well, everything was very clean and orderly. I've used UI health for many years and intend to continue and the staff on duty the very early morning of 17FEB22 only reenforce my decision.

Horrible service ! It's an ER for God's sake. The patient comes in with severe pain but has to wait over 6 hours for someone to even come and take a look .some nurses are polite, but the others are extremely rude and talk like they don't care whether you are in pain or not . While you see the residents just sit and chat, then they take turns on who would want to see you, or no, it's my shift end let the other resident deal with it.

I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding the extended waiting time experienced while in the emergency room at University of Illinois at Chicago medical Center . My purpose in writing this letter is to bring attention to a distressing situation that occurred on August 29, 2023 when left waiting for an agonizing ten hours before receiving any form of medical attention. First and foremost, I would like to stress that I understand the challenges faced by emergency departments and the need to prioritize patients based on the severity of their conditions. However, a wait time of ten hours for an individual in need of medical attention is wholly unacceptable and reflects a clear breakdown in the hospital's ability to provide timely and appropriate care. Not only did this extreme wait time cause excessive physical discomfort and distress for my mother but it also reinforced the perception that their well-being was not a priority at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The lack of communication and transparency throughout the waiting period only added to the mounting frustration and anxiety experienced by both me and my. The staff was very rude and unwelcoming. I urge you to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident promptly. It is crucial that measures are taken to prevent such extensive waiting times from occurring in the future

12/20/23 in at 4:13pm with chest pain and tightness in my right neck chest and shoulder area. Was taken back for xray & ekg then waited another 4hours before leaving because if I'm going to die I want it be on a full stomach! This medical system is a freaking joke, I bet billing for the care you didn't receive will be timely

This has been literally the worst experience I've ever had in my entire life at a hospital. I waited 9 hours to get called in to the room to be told I had to actually wait for them to clean the room up which took another hour. I only seen the doctor once who asked me several questions and was not sure what to tell me about the sharp pains I've been having in my back despite taking xrays and blood work. They issued a covid test although I had no symptoms of Covid because that was "One thing we can rule out". Other than that, no explanation and was discharged soon after. Staff was rude, security was called several times during my stay, place is filthy, and no one makes an effort to maintain social distancing.

I was there yesterday at the emergency room. The front nurses were polite, but the wait was dreadful. We waited for four hours to be seen. My mother was admitted with Covid and an infection. The nurses at night shift were pleasant, but a nurse during the day which was a female was rude and condescending. I will NEVER take her to this hospital again. She deserves better service.

If there’s a negative star I’ll give this place. Coming here is a waste of time because nobody attends to you. You just sit there and waiting for no doctor or nurses to show. The main hospital and clinic even attend to you faster than the so called emergency room. If you came in for shortness of breathe, you’ll have died before they respond to you. This place is horrible!!!

Disappointed about the ER in this hospital. My fiance has been there twice back to back already. Only two days between. He's having more and more seizures an he has ever had. The doctors in the ER told him he's fine though all the test they've done says the complete opposite. We are pretty sure my partner is being discriminated since he has been admitted to their phyc ward in the past for depression and suicidal thoughts. But he isn't depressed right now doesn't have seizures like this when he is. He had several seizures at his therapist and muscle doctor appointment and was told to go to the ER immediately. We do that and can't even get help that we need. He even had multiple seizures both time while in the hospital. The way the ER attendants are acting even angered two of my partners main doctors. This shouldn't happen to anyone

Came here limping once because I fell down a couple of stairs and I was scared that I might’ve broken a bone. Took x-rays, and as soon as they saw no signs of fractures they just kicked me out and sent me home limping - no bandages, wraps, or anything that would help with managing my pain. This is not care. From a facility that serves the public, its a good example of how the healthcare field treats their patients on government insurance.

My mother has MS. We walked into the ER at 2:15pm with a pain level of 7. After a 5 hour wait, my mother began crying because her pain had escalated to a 9. I gave her Advil that did practically nothing. At 9:30pm, I request a status update on the pain reliever they had stated she would get. And I was told that the Advil should last 6 hours and there was nothing else they could do until they take her to a room. At 11:30pm (9hrs later), I decided to take my mom back home and find our own way to relieve pain. This was the worst ER experience ever! They literally see someone crying in the emergency room for hours and they do nothing about it. Not even check in and ask!! How can they let someone be at a level 10 pain and not prioritize them? DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ER

It is extremely unacceptable to have anyone waiting for 5-6 hours. I’m here with my father. He is in severe pain and it is alarming at how no sense of urgency is displayed in the ER. This ER needs some serious help. Especially when you’re here to help the people and community.

This is a really dirty, disorganized hospital. I wouldn't ever recommend it to anyone and don't think it's even sanitary, especially during COVID. We were sent here for my husband's eye problem. One doc had told us he had a detached retina and would need emergency surgery, and said that UIC has the only opthalmologist in the ER in the area. So, of course, we went and the ER people had no idea what we were talking about and it took a long time to get the Opthalmology resident to show up. The admissions person was nice enough, but her clothes were stained and dirty. Two different doctors came in and had my husband re-explain the whole situation. The Opthalmologist was very thorough but gave us a completely incorrect diagnosis. And then nobody ever discharged my husband. Luckily, I got him in to see a specialist today who told us that the diagnosis given was utterly wrong. In fact, he had a life threatening condition that required a real doctor to make a real diagnosis.

Came in at 7pm, left at 1:40am without seeing a doctor. Was told that it is not first come first serve. They give beds based on their view of emergency. So who is in the back saying this person can wait 5+ hours they aren't desperate. It's an emergency room, people don't come there to take a nap. I'm from out of state and I have never experienced such a lack of regard for common decency /moral consideration for people's time an pain.

I'm currently a Sickle Cell patient at this hospital, once upon a time they really had good service (2014) but now it's horrible the Sickle Cell MDs don't listen to their patients and continues to ignore us. We are the patients that is going through pain and know what helps us to rectify the pain. At one point the pain medication we use to get was available now we gotta go through a protocol for pain management contract... smh I have a better chance at Mt Sinai Hospital

Went to ER for parent in pain. ER was very quiet no patients in waiting area at 9pm. Went into Triage within 15 minutes. Patient reviewed by Nurses. All the times I've taken my parent, she has received quality attention by Nurses. I know Doctor takes a while because attending to other patients and thats understandable. After all tests and seen by MD, we were out within 4 hours. Satisfied with the diagnosis because thats all that mattered to me. I have always used UiC Emergency and Hospital and Urgent care for ALL my immediate family and never have had a Bad experience. For me Excellent care that's all that matters. If your situation isnt of live or death, go to Urgent Care on Roosevelt. Emergency is for severely ill patients

If I could do less than one star I would. My mom was in the ER from around 3 PM to almost midnight she was in the waiting room that whole time with an IV stuck to her arm and some blood drawn. They said no rooms were available. Finally, close to midnight they say an ambulance is coming in so they receive priority..that’s understandable but not helping her for 9 hours is unacceptable.

Over 8 hours wait we came at 3pm it is 1120pm now and no hope. Doctors seem slow and like they don’t care. Very dirty. The wait in that dirty polluted environment while you don’t feel well is hell. The doctor and nurses act like they are better and you should be grateful for them talking to you.

Was there for 7.5 hours but the service was excellent. Dr. Ali and her crew were amazing. They were super nice. From the front desk to every RN that attended me. Your health is important so it don’t matter how long we wait. They care for their patients.

We've been here before midnight, and now it's almost 5am (update: its 5:21am). Everybody I talk to is saying there will be a doctor to come see us real soon, how they're dealing with a lot and a lot of sick people and its super super hectic. Their tone is quite condescending as well. Yet, when I'm trying to find someone to attend to my wife I see a bunch of doctors just discussing stuff together in a very lenient manner. My wife requires medical attention as soon as possible and this "emergency" room has been nothing short of an embarrassment to the reputation of Healthcare professionals.

This is the second time that I have been to UI Health Emergency. The first time my son had been attacked by two dogs and then this time was due to a miscarriage. Both times the staff was helpful, clear, and comforting. I’ve been to other ERs and hospitals in Chicago that have been truly awful. This place was nothing short of amazing even during the worst of circumstances!

Please absolutely don’t go to this ER if you need immediate assistance or are in severe pain. Burned my finger in boiling oil. Husband took me to the ER at 10— we thought it might be 3rd degree. Was extremely painful. So we wanted to be cautious. Waiting room was full. I didn’t get called to get looked at until about 3am. All the while, I was in pain in the waiting room. When they DID finally see me, they gave me NEOSPORIN. I wasn’t sure if I would laugh or cry about the absolute waste of time and money this was. Meanwhile, I was being urged to take a pregnancy test. And take a tetanus shot for good measure. I left the ER around 4:30/5am. Staff is unmotivated and lazy at best or cynical and inadequately trained at worst. If you want to be treated like a human being (if that’s possible in American hospitals), definitely go somewhere else. Sinai is fairly close by.

This review is specifically for 2 people that took care of my daughter and me on Christmas Eve 2020. Other staff treated us kindly but these 2 persons, Hannah (staff nurse) and Dr. Cull went beyond the expectations. Dr. Cull is one of the kindest people I’ve known. She seemed to do everything possible to make the situation as easy as possible and explained the process to make the wait time more bearable. Hannah, I don’t have enough words to describe the kind human and compassion she carries in her heart. Don’t let her posture of tough girl fool you, she’s a sweet angel. I can tell she could feel the pain I carried with me on that day seeing my daughter in a tough state. She brought us blankets, pillows, breakfast and kept checking on us to make sure we were ok. And when it was time for my daughter to get transferred where I wasn’t going to be able to see her for a while she made sure I would have an extra minute to say good bye. Hannah, I will always remember. Thank you for the work you do but more than anything thank you for doing your work with your heart.

Had the worst experience at this hospital, I’ve been a patient for many years and have paid so much money to bring myself and my family. I am currently 7 weeks pregnant and I went to go get answers on why I was having so much stomach pain. I spoke to so many nurses and doctors and yet nothing was resolved only to wait for hours and then being told to go home because my results would be ready in two days. There was not a follow up before the discharge. Apparently my urine results came while I was there and the doctor did not explained them to me. I called the hospital back and I spoke with doctor Jonah Fleisher who was extremely rude and condescending. After I asked him if he could explain my results, he sounded really bothered. After he explained everything, he mentioned that if he needed to explain things slower and if I wasn’t ready to discharge I should’ve said no. But how could I say no if I was being rushed out the room. And I’m a teacher or was it because I’m Hispanic with tattoos that I look incapable of understanding medical terminology. I wasted my time and my husbands to come to this hospital and we came here because we thought we would be to trust their medical expertises. Aren’t doctors suppose to take care of their patients? I felt neglected and I am please begging everyone to not come here. All they do is take advantage of your insurance. They charge so much.

I was taken here by ambulance for extreme chest and abdominal pain and waited for hours and hours in the filthy waiting room. There were trails of ants crawling around. I was so sick I couldn’t sit up and had to beg for hours for just a gurney to lay on. I stayed all night with doctors asking me the same questions over and over again. I finally had to ask to be released. The next night the attack happened again, and I uber’d to Northwestern, where in no time at all they discovered my gallbladder attack with a 30 second ultrasound and I had surgery the next day. If you want to potentially die at worst or waste your time at best, this is where to go.
