FRONT DESK NEEDS TO BE TRAINED ON BEING POLITE AND RESPECTFUL!!!! After my workout in the evening, I did not look at my phone in the shower, and wasn’t aware of how long I had spent. After someone yelled inside, to tell me they had closed, I apologized, promptly got out and began to change quickly to leave. Then a man who had the WORST attitude, came in to do a last check and told me to hurry up?! AS IF I WASN’T ALREADY DOING THAT! Before I got to the front desk, I looked at the clock and saw that I was 10 minutes past close!! When I got to the front desk, he basically tried to lecture me on my way out of the door. Claiming that I had been told to they closed 3 times, which I certainly did not hear, and then he attempted to scold me?? And I apologized AGAIN, trying to tell him I hadn’t checked my my phone during my shower, he very RUDELY cut me off and continued to lecture! I was five seconds from going off, but decided to shut him up and told him it wouldn’t happen again and swiftly left. I understand him wanting to leave, but how hard would it have been to say something as simple as “just a reminder for the future, we hard close at____ time”?! Such a simple and NICE way to get a point across. It was extremely aggravating, because now I don’t even want to go back to that location. That guy needs MANNERS.

As someone who has been a member since 2017, I have mixed feelings about this gym now in 2023 knowing what it used to be. Pre-COVID, this gym was top notch but it never quite bounced back. The gym itself is pretty decent. Overall, there are five floors and a rooftop pool: Floor 1/Basement: Men’s locker room and pool/hot-tub (20 yds and three lanes) Floor 2/Main Floor: Entrance, cycle studio, women’s locker room, and a rock climbing wall (which has been closed since 2020) Floor 3: Dance studio for various classes Floor 4: Weight room on turf w/ four squat racks, a smith machine, a couple of benches, a bunch of dumbbells, barbells, cables, machines, etc. Floor 5: Dance studio for yoga classes and a large cardio area w/ treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, erg machines, etc. Roof: Pool that is open during the summer (people mostly just lounge here) The main complaint I have with this gym is the hours. The gym has never returned to pre-COVID hours and currently closes at 9pm on Mon-Thurs, 8pm on Fri, and 7pm on the weekend. This is pretty embarrassing. The result is a gym that has the same foot traffic as pre-COVID but fewer hours. X-Sport (3 blocks south) and Planet Fitness (several blocks north) are both 24 hrs. FFC East Lakeview and Quads Gym both close at 10pm during the week. This gym tries to distinguish itself for its classes but my perception is that programing seems to have been decreased post-COVID as well (at least the spin and free-climb classes). The rock-climbing wall has never re-opened to my knowledge and there has not been any indication that it ever will. As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, last summer there were AC/HVAC issues that made working out feel like you were in a sauna. The locker rooms have showers, the lockers have key code locks attached, and there are towels available for you to use. The pools both seem small but if you really wanted to you could go to the West Loop location which has a 25m pool. You can purchase personal training if you want and it seems that the trainers are pretty professional. You also used to be able to purchase sports massages here but that is no longer a thing after 2020. The employees working here are really nice although reading other reviews it seems cancellations are difficult (you must give 30 days written notice). I believe guest passes are $25. At the end of the day, it's an okay gym. I just have a hard time knowing how much better it used to be. All I really want is for all CAC locations to return to their old hours of operation and I would be fine with the other post-COVID nuances (barring another HVAC failure).

It’s a good gym but it feels like a funeral, it’s been a month since the speakers don’t work in the third floor, a gym without music? And they give towels to clean the equipment instead of wipes like if we pay $10 a month

This place is becoming impossible. Way too many members competing for limited equipment squeezing into every available corner to try to get some space. There are two root problems: 1) Poor floor plan leading to redundancy of underutilized equipment and cramping of popular equipment, 2) Wasted space of multiple rooms which typically sit idle. It is time for some new thinking and a radical transformation to maximize and reverse the rapidly deteriorating conditions.

The air conditioning situation is absurd. You pay premium gym prices and they can’t even keep the cardio floor at a decent temperature. 60 degrees outside, 80 degrees on the cardio floor. What is it going to be like when it’s actually hot out?! Canceled my membership.

I wouldn’t recommend this poorly maintained facility to my worst enemy. You truly do get what you pay for at $89 per month. I’d rather pay more to a facility that has a working HVAC system and values their members. It takes every ounce of energy for the front desk staff to greet members. Inquired about swim lessons via email and the so called “Aquatics Director” was just as rude as the front desk staff. I suppose I shouldn’t have expected anything more. I have immediately canceled my membership and unfortunately will need to remain a member until August 17. I cannot wait to be a valued member at F45 Training.

This is a fine gym for the money. It is generally clean, not usually too crowded and the equipment is in decent condition. The reason for giving two stars is for lack of transparency on how cancellation works for membership. PLEASE READ: You are required to give a 30 day written notice of your cancellation and you will be responsible for any payments that fall within that 30 day window, even if you are no longer able to use the club. I accept some responsibility for not closely reading the fine print, but it still feels a little deceitful.

Its a pretty good gym with decent facilities and a variety of spaces to workout. My biggest problem with this gym is that in the year I've been going to it, they never allowed access to the giant climbing wall they have. Minor things like a reduced space to stretch or do any kind of functional training is ignorable. Some machines are starting to show wear and tear.

I’ve had a great time at this gym so far. Love having access to an outdoor pool. The classes have been great. I have a weird schedule so they don’t always align. Again I go at weird times so it’s never super busy. For the price, it’s definitely worth it. Feels sooooooo much nicer than the LA Fitness I used to go to. Very clean and I’ve never had any sort of issues.

There is a older woman with blonde hair and an enormous rack--it's clear she got worked done because the way she looks at you it's like she's about to rip your head off. It's really disturbing, I wish she had the manners to look away and not glare at you while you're minding your own business. She brings her own disinfectant spray, and I swear she purposefully sprayed in my direction after using a machine next to her. Absolute wackjob.

Has the potential to be a good gym again. They need longer evening hours, and they need to clean more. There have been drain worms in the shower stalls off and on for a year or two. They need to stop cutting corners and spend the extra little bit to get the details right.

Gym is big, amenities are nice. Air conditioning is a serious issue. 70 degrees out but 90 degrees on weight room and cardio floors. Its unbearable. Also the mens locker room is the worst smelling locker room I have ever been in bar none. It looks clean but smells absolutely rancid. On the upside, I dont need to use the sauna because the weight floor is so hot. Really need to get their HVAC fixed or I'll have to sign up at xsport down the street or quads gym. Shame too since Ive been a CAC customer for 5+ years now.

I enjoyed this gym, it’s well appointed. But I wish leaving was just as pleasant. Offered a new job out of town and required to move within 2 weeks. Gym won’t let me cancel until October (it’s August) thus requiring me to pay additional months. They also pick and choose what parts of your contract are valid after 12 months and which are not. Corrupt business plan. This is an exact excerpt from Hallie, oneof their managers stating the terms and conditions on my contract are no longer valid, “Thank you for your email. Your membership is no longer in a contract period as of September of 2017. Section #18 is applicable if you are within a commitment period. You have the ability to cancel at any time with the 30-day written notice by either sending in a cancel email, or in club with an advisor. There is no need to provide the proof of relocation and pay the cancellation fees since your membership has renewed over to a monthly membership.” What a load of idiocracy. I wouldn’t recommend joining unless you can definitively plan when you are leaving.

It's a shame because this gym has the potential to be great but it falls far short. Problem one is the staff. They are quite frankly standoffish at best and surly as worst. I recently had one staff member chase me around the shower and peer into my shower stall with me naked (yes really) because it was close to closing time and he apparently really wanted to go home. The second issue is hours. The gym closes at 9pm on weekdays which is not standard practice for a big city gym. Every other gym in Lakeview pretty much is 24 hours or open until at least 10pm on weekdays. This gym shortened its hours during Covid and never went back to reasonable hours. The facilities could truly be great with the two pools, etc., but unfortunately the short hours and frequently unpleasant staff make this gym subpar.

This Gym has declined so much - It is shocking - Womens locker room has mold everywhere - The showers are rarely cleaned and disinfected - The towels are old and shredded - Steam room has no health department schedule as in most properly managed gyms - Members go into steam & sauna fully dressed - with shoes - talking on their cell phones with shoes on the wall - If you leave weights out will find them in the exact location days later ---The decline in maintenance and care is palpable-

Can someone else tell these people that if they keep short hours it's way more crowd during covid? They close at 7p and 9p at the latest on some days. Also their climbing wall hasn't been operational so don't buy into it... no one has used that thing for who knows how long

Speakers only work in half the gym. Management seems to not care to fix any of the broken machines. People at the desk are often rude and inconsiderate. Glad I left. Xsport down the road is much better value.

Do not touch these people with a barge pole, they make it easy to join but impossible to cancel, they just keep charging your credit card and it doesn't matter if you go into the club or send them messages, or make calls, they refuse to accept the cancellation. It boarders on the fraudulent. The club looks nice but the customer service stinks.

I used to absolutely love this gym. However, as others have mentioned the AC has been broken for the better part of a year (certainly the entire summer). I have tried to use the cardio floor and left before starting my run because it was in the high 80s.

The quality of LVAC has fallen a long way. The hours are much shorter now - up to two hours of less open time per day. It’s unclear if the air conditioning has been turned on for the summer - if it’s on you certainly can’t tell. Even on the cooler days it’s much, much warmer inside. Machines have cobwebs, if that’s any sign of the cleaning regimen. It’s hard to say if it can continue to decline further.

Staff is friendly and helpful. Locker room is more than serviceable, and plenty of cardio equipment. The instructor quality for classes ranges, but you can find ones you like. The weight room is too small for such a busy gym. It’s pretty hard to get a decent lift near peak hours.

Terrible customer service. Will nickel and dime you when you try to cancel your membership as others have pointed out. Overcrowded facility. They recently "Completely Revamped" the gym but everything looks the exact same as before. $65+ a month is pricey for how they treat you.

Unprofessional and disorganized. Some of the staff are very rude. I called to cancel my membership. The staff on the phone told me it is cancelled, and I will receive a follow-up email. Two months passed, and I never received the said email but I assumed it was cancelled because the staff said so. It turns out my credit card was charged twice after for the membership, in addition to 'late fee.' I reached out to one of the managers (Noah) that I would like to receive refunds but I never received it. He said I needed evidence of cancellation (well I called, and never got that email I've been waiting for) -- who would have thought this shiny looking club is so disorganized and basically would steal members' money!??

The gym, staff, locker rooms, and classes are all fantastic and top notch. My issue with the club has been canceling my membership after moving out of state. CAC contracts with ABC financial, a notoriously ruthless financial services company. So far, I have sent them letters addressed to my new address in Florida as well as a copy of my new job acceptance letter, yet they still refuse to cancel my membership. If you are not 100% certain that you will be using the gym for 12 months I strongly advise signing a month to month agreement to avoid my current nightmare.

Rude and arrogant front desk staff who follow people around like little Bolsheviks asserting their warped sense of authority. Had my mask down for a moment to wipe my face, and they immediately started to threaten to pull my membership - I agreed and canceled right the. Machines and equipment are extremely worn or broken, facilities are ageing and no plans to update. Avoid this place if you appreciate respect and honesty.

Switched to LVAC from FFC and a bit disappointed. There is a serious lack of weights and equipment. Also, most of the equipment is old and dirty. Reminds me more of an LA Fitness/XSport but triple the price.

Not sure why it took me this long to considering cancelling my membership. This gym provides less amenities and costs 2x as much as a gym 2 blocks away. However, I would recommend if you want a gym that locks their doors well before the posted closing and notifies members only 24 hours in advance when a private event closes the whole place down.

This gym just did not seem to me to be worth the price tag. Other gyms that cost half the price seem to be just as good, if not better. It has a rock climbing wall, and towel service, but other than that it does not have anything else that I would say it does better or has, that other gyms don't. I was considering cancelling the membership for those reasons for quite some time, but what sealed the deal for me was when I showed up one evening and they had a sign on the door that there was a private event, and that the gym was otherwise closed. When I went inside to ask about what was going on, and how I could have known prior instead of making the trip to get there, I felt like I was treated poorly. One gentleman started yelling at me that I couldn't go in, and a lady stopped me in the doorway as if I was a criminal or something. I suppose that they can do whatever they want with their business, at the end of the day, and I can choose to be a member or not. However, to me it was odd to think that a membership establishment would choose to close to its members but stay open for other reasons. I'm sure they signed up a bunch of new members at the event though, so win for them!

Looks like another gym in lakeview is going bust. They can't even afford to fix their AC, which has been broken for much of the year, and the entire summer. Working out there in the heat is miserable. Where is the membership money going? I don't expect this gym will be around in a few months, and certainly wouldn't sign an annual contract there ...

Causing the drop in stars is due to their COVID response. They allowed you to freeze your membership and said your days you missed from March would be credited to your account - they NEVER said that your membership freeze would be in place AFTER your already paid for days ran out once gyms opened on 7/27. Poor communication and unprofessional - i will be looking for new gyms to go to. In normal times, there is not any better gym in the city for the price, but really upset with their handling of customer billing during this time.

It seems the employees here would prefer that the gym would still be on lockdown so the could be collecting enhanced unemployment. The service was terrible after the re-opening. Either the employees are not trained properly on how to interact with customers, in which case their managers should be fired or they aren't following the training and policies in which case they should be fired. I'll be finding another gym.

While I have enjoyed the classes and staff, Chicago Athletics Clubs have an extremely misleading term of agreement for month-to-month members. Not presented up front, but hidden in the contract is the terms stating that you have to give them a 30-Day notice of cancellation from their program. This effectively forces you to pay for an extra month of service even though you are on a so-called "month-to-month" program. This happening despite the fact that it costs extra to have a month-to-month membership, with basically no difference between it and a normal one. Also, during the time we were members at the Club, they completely devalued their point system by eliminating it entirely. All incentives that had been earned by going to the Club were lost. While technically not violating any of their terms or policies that you have to sign, they are misleading in the naming and pricing of their memberships. They should have a more ethical approach to business and be up-front about any potential fees and cancellation requirements.

An ok gym, small weight room, not a lot of selections. The main complaint is the hours. Why are we closing at 9pm? There's absolutely no good explanation for this. When I signed up it was until 9:30. Those of us who workout in the evening have a small window of time after getting off work to get in. You need to extend your hours to at least 10pm.

This is a very good gym, but unfortunately they have ripped me off. I froze my account at the start of the pandemic and just found out they have been charging me for months. When I tried to discuss this with them on the phone, they acted like it was my fault. Why is every gym so eager to rip you off?

I’ve been a member off and on for years. Tried to go to a spin class today and have to say, I’m MAJORLY disappointed to see they have electronic signups 24 hours in advance…but that’s not the worst part. If you can’t attend they charge $10. This isn’t a studio, we don’t pay per class - you shouldn’t charge a penalty. Or better yet, the way you had it before was better…I show up at the gym, I sign up. First come first serve. The electronic sign up makes classes fill up too fast, and makes it competitive - and I just want to go to a spin class without risk of incurring a fee. Just another example of big business trying to nickel and dime consumers that have been loyal for years! Not impressed!!

I was a member of LVAC for about two years and had a great experience. The facility is absolutely gorgeous — spacious and clean. The rooftop pool is a unique perk. And considering the included access to all group classes, the price is super reasonable. I really enjoyed all of the group fitness instructors — BodyPump and ballet were particularly fun. The indoor pool is nice too, and usually empty. Importantly, I’ve always had great experiences with their member services. When life changes got in the way, they cancelled my membership no questions asked.

I've been a member of a few gyms and can honestly say this is the nicest gym I've been part of for the cost. -The staff is super nice and upbeat -The towel service is great -The steam room is nice, albeit a bit small -The locker rooms are clean and well kept -I never have trouble finding cardio equipment I want to use -The weight machine area is well equipped (I don't really use free wights) -There's a wide array of classes with fun/enthusiastic teachers I will admit I get a decent discount through my company and my wife and I are both members so it is about $70 a month a person. If it was $115 a person I might feel differently. In general though I like this better than the previous memberships I've had to places like 24 Hour Fitness.

It's a solid B+, realistically. That is, however, the best available in the area. I would say there's a kind of more put together vibe. I can't wear certain sweatpants there. Definite gay vibe in the locker room/everywhere. Sometimes you just want to be grungy at the gym. Can be weird as a gay person to have like all this constant late twenties muscle power bottom lingering eye contact-ation going on all the time. Great discounts for various types--check and see if you apply.

I have been a member of LVAC for over a year. The club is very clean and the equipment is good. My biggest complaint is that their check in experience is terrible. They typically have 2 to 3 people at the front desk who I assume are being paid to check in customers. Half the time they don't even look up from their phones or screens to acknowledge or greet people. The last two mornings there were at least three people at the front desk and not one of them even acknowledged me presence when I checked in (one was the manager)!!! The manager of the club has never said hi to me or even looked at me the many times I have seen him, so this sort of explains why the bad customer service trickles down. I go to the club every morning seven days a week. At my last club (FFC boystown) the check in experience was wonderful and I was almost alway welcomed each morning by name and with a geniuine smile. FFC obviously has some great customer service training for the people checking people in and LVAC should greatly enhance their customer service training (if it even exists). Why pay at least 2 people to be at the front desk to check people in, when these people barely acknowledge or greet people? The appear to be bored, kind of miserable and disconnected with their members. The club manager at FFC was also wonderful at greeting people and smiling at them when he saw his members using his gym.

Not that anyone with the CAC group responds or takes reviews seriously… because the worst issues seem to all be the same in negative reviews, all could be fixed and yet seems like they have no intent to resolve. 1. They have the shortest hours of any gym in Lakeview. This gym is small and already overcrowded at nearly every-time of day, horrible on weekends. Extended hours, which they had pre-Covid could relieve some of the peak hour congestion, like I said… seems an easy enough fix, esp if they are looking at other nearby gyms now open till at least 11PM. 2. WORMS and GNATS. Yes, when you are in the shower it isn’t rare to have to swat away a gnat or 3. Then as you look down at your feet there are tiny black worms wiggling and squirming around the drains in the showers. I’ve seen reviews here that mention this as a problem from over a year ago. Yet again…. Should be easy enough to get rid of, and yet they don’t bother. I’ve never seen anyone clean the shower stalls during the day or attempt to pour anything into the drains. 3. Certain staff can be very rude and catty and some of the gay guys working there go off on power trips by operating one set of gym rules for them and their friends and having different ones for people not part of their click. This gym is in Boystown so shouldn’t be a shock, I just would expect the employees to do the same as they expect from all members. No one likes a hypocrite. My advice is either go the cheaper route and use Xsport down the street, or if you want a similar experience with more equipment go to FFC East Lakeview.

Great experience at CAC. Unfortunately I had to cancel my membership due to moving out of state. Hallie made this process so painless and I am grateful for the good service I have received at CAC.

Gym was ok - horrible policy for membership. Signed paperwork three years ago & they continuously renewed, no one ever reached out to check to see if I wanted to continue. When I tried to cancel my membership I was asked “why” & if I wanted to move home gym locations. I was then charged a fee for the notice time plus an additional month. Make sure you know what you’re getting into before you sign up for this gym.

Pros: Eye Candy (mostly gay crowd in this gym Facilities: clean, modern Service: great customer service from employees Cons: Not open 24 hours A bit pricey for what you get Eye candy: so many chiseled bodies might leave you a bit self conscious after the deep dish pizza you ate after partying late in boystown and not finding who to hook up with :/ lol Definitely not the best gym in the world, but definitely the best in the neighborhood

I checked out Lakeview Athletic club after going to X Sport for a few years and I have to say the grass is not greener on the other side. Lakeview Athletic Club absolutely falls short on equipment and vibe, I thought this would be more of a boutique gym but instead it was just dull.

I’ve been a member for one month now and I really love the ballet burn and yoga classes there. I agree with the other reviewers that the AC is a huge problem in this location because in 80-90 degrees outside the AC practically barely works so my workouts have been miserable from this point of view but other than that great atmosphere and instructors. Very nice workout studios with gorgeous views. P.S. Please, add more aquatics to the schedule… specifically Aqua TBT in late afternoons or evenings few times a week or weekends will be very appreciated.

I love this gym. It's a perfect mix of down-to-earth and nice. There's always such an upbeat vibe here. Generally fixes my mood if I feel beat down 😹 it gets pretty busy in the early evenings, which can feel overwhelming....but I can always find some machine that's open. AND I love the awesome classes!!

Garrett is a great instructor who made me feel very safe and comfortable in the class! All the staff are very friendly and the gym is so clean. I can’t wait to keep coming here.

I had a wonderful experience at Lakeview Athletic Club! The equipment was always clean and there was rarely wait time to use any machine or weights. The best part by far was the owner, who was always there to help and greeted you by name.

Believe the hype. I've checked out a bunch of different gyms since moving to SF a few years back and Nate and Thomas take the cake. They just opened up a new studio that's even nicer than their previous awesome studio. Nate and Thomas know every member by name and new guests are welcomed with open arms and taught the proper way to do the exercises, preventing injury. Every class is different and the energy is always high and lots of high-fives and cheering for each other. Give it a shot!

I was a member here when I lived in Chicago and after moving and joining other gyms, I cannot say enough good things about this gym. No other gym I've been to stands up to LVAC. Incredibly clean, well kept, excellent spa-like locker rooms, and the teachers and trainers were amazing, specifically one man who taught Body Pump! He put together the best playlist and always brought his energy and excitement and I miss his class! Highly recommend this gym.

Best gym in the neighborhood. Always super clean and friendly staff. They do day passes and weekly passes for purchase if you want to try it out. It was super quick to sign up.

I was weary going to the gym post covid but they have done everything in their power to try to make it as safe as possible. All the members seem to be following all the instructions.

Very friendly staff with a clean facility. Have been apart of this gym for about 3 months and wouldn’t recommend any other gym. Would prefer the men’s bathroom to be a little cleaner.

A gym that has it all. They have a decent range of workout equipment as well as 2 pools (one in the basement and one on the roof), a sauna, and a jacuzzi

Great hot tub awesome staff really friendly and also very clean and sanitized which I like I want to a lot of other athletic clubs and really can’t make ends meet besides this one is the only place that is my go to from now on

LVAC but the HVAC prob won’t work as it was down most of the summer 2022. Guesting policy is abysmal even after HVACageddon. The front desk is friendly and greet-able 10% of the time (if they even notice you, though the morning crew gets positive props). The machine servicing is way delayed. That’s about it. Oh wait, there is a pool though. 👍

I go here for the pool. Most affordable pool in Lakeview/Lincoln Park. They recently purchased new lane lines and new water fountain with improved water bottle fill station. The pool is in excellent shape. Great tile work in the entire pool area including an excellent hot tub.

This gym is THE PERFECT GYM It is very clean, and I really mean it! You can tell the cleanliness of a gym by it's locker rooms and the floors of the showering area, and LVAC has that! The staff are very friendly and helpful. It has all the machines you will need, all you got to do is apply for a guest past and see what this gym is! thats what convinced me.

Great gym for the price. Love the classes, just wish they had AM classes between 7-9, not just 6am or 9:30.

I've been going here since it opened. It's the best! The classes, which are free, are taught by superstar trainers that keep you going back.

I love this gym. But please, please change the music playlist! It is the exact same all days. Specifically rotate that mexican cumbia music, it is just unbearable

Pros: I worked out here for 2 years. It’s a well taken care of facility with all the amenities. It has all the basic weightlifting equipment needed to train all the major muscle groups. If you want a more exclusive club feel, this is your place. Cons: I like places filled with people who are way more muscular than me... this was not that place (and only I’m a casual lifter). Also, it’s a little pricey for a place that’s not open 24/7 and without childcare services.

Good gym. Small weight room but generally not a problem outside of busy hours. Biggest complaint is the hours of operation. You need to be open later than what you’re currently offering. I’ll likely be joining one of the many other gyms within ~0.5 mile radius that are open later into the evening.
