Had a phenomenal time at Demera last week. I had never had Ethiopian food before but wow it was so good! My friends and I tried the Chef's platter and it was the perfect way to try a lot of things at once. The dessert was also delicious, especially the Chocolate Coconut Cream Pie. I got a reservation but there were seats available on a weeknight. Everything was on the first level.

Arrive on time, there is only a 15 min grace period or your reservation will be given up to someone else. The hosts were kind enough to sit late parties but arrive with your party on time. When seated you will be greeted by a kind and friendly server and the manager might make a visit to your table to learn about your dining experience. If it's your first time, go with the sample platter. You can do mild and spicy. The cocktails are delicious and the food is flavourful and tastes fresh and absolutely yummy. This place is a gem and I recommend making a reservation. Try everything and come back for more. You will want to bring friends and show them a good time.

From the atmosphere to the service to the drinks & food, this place deserves more than 5 stars. My sister & I were in town from Detroit to celebrate our birthday in Chicago for the weekend. We chose Demera as our dinner spot following a recommendation by someone in our party. We were scheduled for 6pm but called to switch the time to 8pm, as it worked best with plans. The hostess over the phone took care of it with no issues. Once we arrived, we were greeted warmly by the host, and those present were seated quickly. The atmosphere was convivial, homey, and intimate - perfect for gatherings of friends and family. The decor was beautiful, and the smells that flowed through the air were reminiscent of my own family gatherings. Once everyone in my party arrived, we ordered the Chef's Selection Messob, Sambussas, and a few drinks. It didn't take long for our food & drinks to be brought out (very pleased!). The Espresso Martini was divine, and the Sangria was fresh and delicious. The Sambussas were absolutely delicious, and the breading was wonderful. The Demera Messob was perfect for our party of 6. Everything was full of flavor, and each combination we tried was superb. There was so much food that we actually could not finish it all, sadly, but we ate as much as our stomachs could take. At the end of dinner, my sister & I were given delicious treats to celebrate with. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially those from out of town. Those willing to try something new will almost certainly find something to enjoy at Demera. Thank you to the staff who made this a pleasant dining experience. This was a highlight of our birthday weekend, and we couldn't have been happier.

I’ve never had Ethiopian food before and I really liked it. We especially liked the Sambussas. My kids lived them. And I got some cubed beef in an anchila sauce. Yum.

In Uptown to view murals and stopped by on a Sunday mid afternoon for a meal. Delicious! Service attentive, found solutions for food intolerance. Honey wine is made in house and very good, had the Dora Alicha chicken dish and enjoyed the experience. Entrance, seating and rest areas accessible.

I had never tried Ethiopian food but wow!! I love it! My daughter in law brought us here. She’s been coming since she was a child. My favorite was the lemony cubes steak. We tried the big platter with 3 meats and 3 veggies. Potatoes were very spicy. Can’t wait to go back.

The food was absolutely phenomenal! This is by far some of the best food my husband and I have ever had in a restaurant. The staff were extremely helpful and service was prompt. If we lived in the area, we would eat here all the time! Highly highly recommend this restaurant and my husband and I look forward to exploring more African cousine after this wonderful experience.

We ordered the sampler platter of sambusas and loved the lentil ones. Also ordered a vegetarian combo for 2 + 2 meat dishes (chicken & beef), which was just enough for 5 people. The server said they’ve been there for about 15 years and they clearly know how to cook good food!

Came here for my mom’s birthday and the food is absolutely delicious. We came pretty early in the day so we had the restaurant practically to ourselves. Quick and friendly service and a very nice atmosphere.

Welcoming was warm, waitress was good but service was little slow which is OK as I have seen only one person working. Food was not upto mark for the reviews I have seen, this isn’t my first Ethiopian restaurant so I can compare quality wise and also portion size to cost. Injeras are cold, lamb is over cooked remotely not worth it. Don’t think it’s one of the days as now I see similar comments about injeras being cold and overly sour. I would try another Ethiopian restaurant instead.

I had Eid dinner here and was pleasantly satisfied. I like Ethopian food and this has been one of the best ones I have been to so far. The sambusa platter was delicious, I loved the spinach ones. The tib was freshly prepared and spicy, just the way I like it.

Everything was on point here. It was all very good. From the food to the servers, I can say nothing bad. I went here with some friends. We ordered a platter with various items that is suited for 4. It did not disappoint. We all loved it. Oh, I'm not big on dessert but that slice of cake in the photos is delicious.

Absolutely delicious. Demera provides extraordinary service in a beautiful restaurant. The honeywine is dangerously sweet and tasty and can be easily addicting... The beef sambussas were very well cooked with a tasty spicy honey sauce. I have always enjoyed tartare and this was no exception.

Went there a day before my birthday. Having lived in a few countries around the world, including Africa, I have to say that I was really looking forward to some authentic cuisine. This place was a major disappointment. Crowded tables really close together. If I want to share my discussions with anyone I would ask them to join in. I don't want to hear others personal problems during my dinner. No table cloth in sight. Most of the restaurant pictures show them? Food-mediocre at best, everything was barely room temperature, nothing stood out in flavor or presentation. Portions were tiny, one of the meat dishes had a cube of meat of about an inch long and wide, and falling apart. The pan baked bread which we ordered in addition to the meal was stale. You could actually see the sides were it was cut caving in. And it was cold and hard. The final straw was my desert, chocolate coconut pie. It came in frozen solid on the inside and the sides of it pouring around the plate, awful. Will not be back, ever. For a total of around $130 for two people I think I can find better places to eat.

Everything was good! Definitely try the sampler appetizer. We had the three meat and three veggie option. I loved the shrimp and the greens. You all eat with your hands so be prepared. Staff was super sweet too’

We went here for restaurant week and loved the dinner menu with the drink pairings. Our appetizers were the sambussas + timatim soup. The entrees were the demera messob for 2. Dessert was awesome of key lime pie and creme Brulee. Very tasty and good value. Thank you Demera Restaurant!

I have been meaning to go here for years and I am so glad I finally did. We went for Valentine's Day and they had a cute menu that was well priced, and we got to try lot of different dishes. we got a bottle of honey wine that was absolutely amazing. The vegan chai ice cream and cheesecake was so good. I love how many vegan options are available and so so tasty! Staff was so, so kind and attentive and the food was out of this world. So glad we went and will be back again!

Everyone enjoyed the food! 10/10. The service was amazing as well. Missed our reservation, but we were seated immediately we walked in. Definitely going back. Did i mention the complimentary slice of birthday cake, which was PHENOMENAL????? Couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate my husband's birthday with friends.

First time trying Ethiopian cuisine and would gladly try it again. The restaurant was warm and inviting as was the wait staff. We had the sambussa sampler to start and would recommend everyone start with that. It was a great first step into the new cuisine and it was amazing. The drinks were good, but they didn't have a few we tried to order. Additionally, the QR code for the drink menu also didn't work. Actually, now that I think about it, they need to iron out the dinner menu QR code as well. The important stuff, the food, they have nailed down right though. The experience of eating with your hands and not even having silverware on the table was another fun aspect to the meal. The food was 5/5, just get the easy stuff figured out and this place would be tough to beat.

Very busy yet lovely atmosphere for this bustling alive ethnic restaurant with a mixed pleasant crowd and polite and efficient service. We waited 40 minutes without reservations at peak Saturday night time yet it was an enjoyable sit. The food was fresh and delicious and timely. They had 9 vegan options and various other specialties. We choose the mixed vegan sampler for 2 at 48 dollars. The coffee is tasty and served traditionally as shown. The tea was also great. Overall great experience.

Will search high and low for Ethiopian food, and this place did not disappoint!!! Beautiful, bright fresh everything and the Injera is out of this world. Sour, spongey, just perfect.

Excellent service and interesting food. The restaurant was packed. We had a reservation but people who just walked in had 2.5 hours wait on Saturday evening. We tried south african wine white wine and it was excellent. The birthday piece of cake was on them. One thing to note is that it was difficult to find food for kids as they do not offer standard kids menue as in other restaurants.

We went as a group of 9 people on a weekend evening, all of us vegetarians. It was the first time trying Ethiopian cuisine for several people in our group. The restaurant was packed with people and since we had a table reserved already, we were seated promptly on arrival. The service was in general very responsive and quick. We ordered a couple of tea pots to share along everyone and ordered 3 of their vegetarian bayanetu to share among all of us. They came with as many injeras (unlimited) as we asked for. Among the vegetarian dishes on our platter we particularly enjoyed the lentils Kik Alicha, misir wot, and shiro. The quosta ( spinach ), kayseer tibs ( beets and carrots), tikle gomen ( cabbage) were also really good. These would be my choice of 6 if we had to choose the vegetarian messob ( instead of vegetarian bayanetu). Would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to have Ethiopian food. We really enjoyed our time here. The tea was fantastic with the spices really giving it the flavor and warmth. The coffee was fantastic but also quite strong. We enjoyed both.

Great place if you want to try Ethiopian cuisine! I have tried Ethiopian food before and this place did not disappoint. We had the Appetizer Messob and the Demera Messob and the portion sizes were great and allowed us to try multiple dishes. Drinks were good too, sambusa and farmer’s cheese are must try!! We had Icecream for the dessert, which was okay. Good experience overall!!

Great food, great location, and great service! The manager was so nice and accommodating! We went for my brother’s birthday and they brought him out a sweet treat! The drinks were good! They have an entire vegan section which is always nice to see as a vegan!! Food was very flavorful. They even had a vegan dessert!! Can’t wait to visit again!

Came to Demera a little while ago to switch up the cuisine for a date night! This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I’ve heard the best things about this restaurant so was very excited to try. Overall, we had a great experience. The servers were all really nice and attentive. We started with cocktails which were good and reasonably priced and sambussas which were also really good! For the main meal we got the half veggie / half meat sampler platter (Demera Messob). We went with a few of the waitress’s recommendations as well as what sounded good to us from the menu. Many of the dishes were very good. I think my favorite was the Shrimp Tibs! Overall I’m giving it 4 stars because I didn’t really enjoy the food. The main dish is served with a very, very sour type of bread/wrap that I did not care for. The idea was to dip the bread into the different dishes and eat it with your hands, but without the bread or silverware (it’s customary to eat with your hands) the saucy dishes were very difficult/strange to eat. I’m not at all a picky eater but it wasn’t for me. Really wanted to like it

Beautiful place for alfresco dining due to a natural green canopy. The food was delicious. Skip the appetizer (waitstaff will recommend) because the portions on the platters are very generous. We had 4 people in our party and couldn’t finish it because we got an appetizer. The only disappointing dish on our platter were the collard greens, which are usually one of my favorite when dining at other Ethiopian restaurants. The Ethiopian coffee is a great treat. Definitely recommend!!

Wow, just wow. I’ve had Ethiopian food before and this further enhanced my love for this cuisine. Got the sharing platter, which was plenty for four people; even took home leftovers for another two meals. Vegetarian options are available. Make a reservation as this place is popular. Highly recommend!
