A rather disappointing experience overall. Started off well, quickly met at the door and taken to a table, drinks order and starters were dealt with pretty much straight away. I will definitely say the starters were the only good thing about this outing. Now where it all went south was the 51 minute wait for the mains (no communication of a wait time on food) which is always a key thing with food service. What really baffled myself and companions was the fact that a table next to us came in after our starters were cleared and managed to get their service and mains within 35 minutes of sitting down. Once again still no communication of a delay on food. When our food finally arrived; granted the plates and food were piping hot - congrats! But where it went completely wrong is the what should have been a medium rare steak actually came so well done I could’ve used it as a hockey puck, nevermind my friends steak who asked for medium and you could’ve made a pair of boots with it. After finishing our meals, we then sat there for another hour waiting for someone to acknowledge us and clear the table, another 15 minutes for the bill and sat ignored for another 25 minutes until someone finally came to take payment. Our overall experience was so unsatisfying and disappointing. I’ve worked within the hospitality industry for 10 years starting off as bar staff working my way to general manager of several family food heavy pubs and I’ve never seen service so lacking. I’d never recommend this establishment, a large amount of training needs to be done with your waiting staff.

I left disappointed after expecting an up market meal based on the menu and its descriptions. What we were served was frankly for the money, a bit of a joke. The lasagne I chose was ok. Certainly not worth the price tag though. The Vegan Burger, my better half was served was little more than a childs meal. No coleslaw as described in the vegan menu, and she was served skinny fries, when the menu stated chunky chips. The staff member who delivered the meal said the coleslaw wasn't vegan despite having ordered from vegan menu?? Why would you put anything non vegan, onto a vegan menu!! 🤦The waitress happily went off to get chunky chips as per the menu. Either way she was served no side salad as a replacement. The waitress happily went off to get chunky chips as per the menu, when we left, we realised we has been charged for the chunky chips that we should have had in the first place!!Wouldn't recommend. Won't return for the food. See photo for her £15 burger!

I was in a group of 8, all food served in good time, cooked to perfection. The dessert was difficult to resist and it was probably the best sticky toffee pudding I've had. I shall be returning.

My husband took me to The Folly for our anniversary, along with our baby. We went on a Sunday and had the Pork Roasts with extras. It was delicious and we ate so much that we couldn't even think about a pudding. The atmosphere was great and the staff were really helpful. The food was really good quality, and I would happily return and recommend.

Nice pub. Decent car park size. Was able to book a large table at the last minute without any bother. Portion sizes were good and prices were reasonable. Only slight gripe was a bit of a wait for food. But as it was a large group amd all the food came out around the same time can't complain to much.

Really expensive drinks, slow bar service and small portions of food (had to send my bowl of chips back which had around 10 in there and was £3.50!) Also never any crisps! However, the pub does have a nice atmosphere and a nice garden to soak up the sun in. The bar staff are friendly and always nothing is too much of an ask. If they could look at the prices (£3.90 for a pint of coke!!!) And portion sizes it would be an 5 star venue.

Nice pub, friendly staff, food OK but not as good as last time we went, the steak 8oz for £18 was a bit boring and the roasted tomatoes were just cold fried normal tomatoes, a bit of rocket leaf salad , no mushroom and just a few chips, the sauce was extra. Cheese cake was frozen in the middle but was nice. Ok average I guess, had better in wetherspoons to be fair.

Needed somewhere for a quick meeting abd been by pub loads of times. Found a quiet corner enjoyed a pint and a meeting. Good bar staff hard working waiters/waitresses..also learnt how enormous some fake eyelashes have become as one waitress sporting about 1.5 inches of lash. Didn't eat but food looked good and service efficient. Good car park easy access

Sharon the server was so lovely. She was so busy but took time to take a photo for us . She was so friendly and very helpful. She made us feel very very welcome. We were celebrating my 60th and the 4 of us had the best time. The food was really nice but having nice staff makes the whole experience enjoyable. See you all in a few weeks.

We was very early for our booking but the staff were so kind and helpful, there was 7 of us coming to enjoy there festive menu. We sat and had some drinks and the staff helped up have some photos which we all thought was so kind. Our service and food was amazing, all of the team that served us made our evening feel relaxed and enjoyable. The atmosphere was peaceful with candles lit all around the room which only added to the atmosphere. Really looking forward to coming back again soon!

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish, the service was spot on and the steaks were amazing (mine a little undercooked, but still tender and enjoyable). And the lemon sundae ?.. will 100% be back

Went for Sunday Carvery, booking essential would say as person behind could not be accommodated. There are two sizes of carvery at £ 10.75 and £ 12.25 . Very nice ambiance and the carvery meat was beef , gammon and Turkey with the usual vegetables . All well presented and all of our party said how good the food was.

  • 1/5 Carolyne D. 2 years ago on Google
The Folly used to be amazing- what happened?? The meat used to be absolutely gorgeous, served by the chef who was generous with his portions - huge slices of succulent beef, juicy and delicious. You could select your veg - including cauliflower cheese - and smother it in rich gravy. Now that self serve has gone, the carvery is shockingly bad!! I received a plate of veg (minus the cauliflower cheese as it’s now over £4 a portion!) with one and a half tiny slices of beef. Surprised at the lack of meat for £14, I mentioned it to the waitress who brought a plate with a few more slices. Good? NO!! It was so dry and tough we could barely eat it - most ended up in a napkin totally impossible to chew. What a disappointment! We’ve been going to the Folly for years and had no idea how much it has deteriorated (although the kale and red cabbage are still lovely). Bring back the original, delicious carvery, with mouth-wateringly good meat and in generous portions; the one we had today was barely worth leaving the house for - and certainly not worth £14 a head. What a shame.

We arrived 5 minutes late compared to our booking we were met by a warm and friendly gentleman who instantly took us to our table as I am in a wheelchair one of the chairs was quickly removed allowing me to sit at the table. After a short while our server Stacey took our drinks order she was very pleasant and knew the full range of drinks on offer and left us menus. After a short wait our drinks arrived and as we were ready to order Stacey took our order answering several simple questions we had in a very professional manner. The food arrived after a short while and was hot and all 5 people in our party said how good the food was I personally had the roast beef sunday lunch and thought the amount of meat was very good but would have liked a little more veg. Our sever Stacey had very good timing attending the table when we were near the end of our to ask if further drinks were required Overall we spent approximately 2 very enjoyable hours in a very friendly atmosphere my only slight negative was the light in the disabled toilet could be a little brighter

I was staying nearby for work as The Folly was recommended. Burger was nice on the whole, coleslaw looked like it had been around for a while as cabbage had started to go brown. Friendly staff

Lovely pub very friendly staff . Will be going again to try the food. We went to try the food today. The seasonal veg turned out to be a tiny portion of peas with my pie and none of the veggies stated on the menu. Some items were not available on the menu unfortunately but my pie was delicious despite the lack of veg. Husband enjoyed his burger. Rather a long wait for our food though.

Went here for the Spinal Injuries Association monthly meet up. It's a nice pub, easy to get too. The food is typical pub food and they have enty of choice.

The best pub food I've had in ages! The staff are amazing and make you feel very welcome, Good selection of drinks and very cosy pub. Once we were finished, One of the chefs (Big bald bloke) Came out to greet us and check if the food was to our liking. Very professional and amazing service, Cant go wrong! Will be visiting again very soon! (I did take pictures of the amazing roast dinner we had but I lost the photos)

My colleague and I are both Gluten Free (allergy not choice) and whilst I appreciate that we had to go online to see the menu the navigation did not work so we had to guess. We had bread delivered with one of the meals even though we asked for none to be delivered, we think gluten free was delivered but we asked that it not be delivered with the meal. However, Julie our server was lovely and despite, I think, being quite new and appeared a little nervous she was very helpful and ensured the system knew we needed gluten free meals.

It was extremely busy and although our drink order was taken almost immediately, the drinks didn't arrive after 20 minutes and we have to remind the waitress. Our booking was for 1pm but we didn't receive our food until 2pm. The food, however, was delicious and good value for money.

  • 4/5 Claire M. 5 months ago on Google
The food was delicious and we were seated quite soon after arriving. Decor was good but the toilets need redoing. They didn’t go with the styling of the rest of the pub and looked a bit tired. The only downside was the food took quite a long time but when it did come it was all lovely and we had a very responsive waitress.

Upon arrival the young lady behind the bar was very accommodating and informed myself that they were still serving food for lunch. Julie - the waitress that looked after us - was extremely friendly and polite. She was particularly engaging with my elderly grandparents and nothing was too much trouble for her. The food was excellent too! Very happy with the service at the Folly and will be returning in the near future.

A great local pub with an excellent selection of draught beers and ciders, wines and spirits. They were very accommodating and welcoming given how many of us there were, and the food that arrived was hot and fresh. There was an excellent selection for people who prefer veggie or vegan offerings, although service was a touch slow. That being said, I'd definitely give this place a try again, and would recommend to anyone.

Firstly I am disabled and parked in a disabled bay to the rear of the Folly. The door was not open and I had to struggle to walk around to the front entrance. Unacceptable!! We waited an hour for our meals! Again unacceptable! However the food was piping hot and enjoyable. Staff were lovely!

  • 3/5 Chris L. 6 months ago on Google
Food was good but a little expensive. Some of the staff were quite rude, went in at 4:30pm to eat with the kids, no indication tables might be reserved, no wait to be seated sign and no staff around so we grabbed a table, ordered at the bar and then a very grumpy staff member told us we had to be gone in 1.5 hours as the table was reserved. Would have been nice to have known that before we ordered and there was no reason to be rude about it.

  • 4/5 CJ J. 6 months ago on Google
Mostly a good experience. Efficient service, didn't have to wait long. Food was good quality and tasty but presentation could be improved. Basically all the veg were piled up together with the meat on top and swamped with gravy. This meant the roast potatoes, which should be crispy, were rather soggy. And we weren't asked if it was okay, which seems to be standard practuce these days. Apart from that it was enjoyable. We will come again.

Very nice Sunday roast. Booked a table in the bar for a more relaxed atmosphere but the music was a bit too loud. The beef was very nice and tender. I was disappointed that the lamb was not available (booked an early lunch to make sure I could get it) and was told by two members of staff that it’s being removed from the menu altogether (nothing on the menu to suggest this) Friendly service and a friendly staff (bar staff and and waitress) was very helpful and quick with extra condiments. It’s not cheap, but it’s very good food and a nice treat (not your pile it high rubbish) This was nicely cooked and plated spot on. Would definitely go back - Thanks to all at “The Folly”

My old review is below so do read it but a month later a revisit didn't see The Folly at its best. Admittedly they were 2 staff members down but missing an order off our mains (they did strike it off when I came to pay) is just a bit sloppy and overcooked (bhajis and flatbreads both shall we say crisper than well a crisp) isn't what normally happens when you're bodies down. I'll try the place again in another month and update this but I'm not convinced my party of 10 will be accepting my invite. Old review: Another day another dinner. The Folly's under new management so time to see how the new fairs with the old. Out has gone the large central table and a lick of paint and I guess it does look a bit better. Last time I visited here I almost crashed the Audi after being distracted by the nippers arguing in the back - no such distraction today since I'm sans enfants so on with the eating. The extended family were not happy with the light coming in through the windows so complained - no problem sir, we'll move you to another table (1-0 to the Folly). My choice of beer wasn't on and no 2nd real ale (1-1). After ordering the waiter told those of us on carvery tickets we'd get the nudge 5 minutes before the remaining meals would come out (2-1). The chicken and chorizo pasta was average based on poor sausage choice by the chef but the curried swordfish was above average if a touch high on the scoville scale due to the chilli (possibly bird's-eye chillis sliced raw?) so a draw here. Service was cheerful and efficient (if changed half way through) but some drinks were missed off the first attempt at the bill (another draw I'm afraid). OK - what I'm saying is they're trying hard but they need to brush up on a few little things if they want repeat visits from larger parties. I know how difficult it is to please groups of people - nobody was dissatisfied here - the grub was decent mid-range pub fair - but you need to keep rubbing if you want the polish to shine. It's good to see it nicely busy though since I hate seeing pubs doing badly - we have a serious responsibility to keep them ALL open. Trebles all round...

Highchair was filthy, had bits of food still so over it, I had to flash wipe it myself. Not keen on wooden highchairs in restaurants they always feel sticky and tacky to touch. The staff watched whilst I cleaned it as well. The food is much better than it used to be, and it's great for a pub lunch. I probably wouldn't go there for a special occasion

Not great. I will be honest if I had checked the menu on line, I would have gone elsewhere. Large open pub just off the ring road outside Downend. It used to be my local when I was a kid. Large carpark. Bright clean open pub. Bar staff struggled to understand our order, I have to presume he was new. Didn't pull a full pint. Couldn't work the till properly. All the other staff were fine. I will attach the menu so you can make your own decision but I think it is an overpriced fussy menu. I rarely struggle to find something on a menu I want, but I struggled here. My starter didn't taste great & my friend said the soup was bland. The main course was nice but not worth the cost. If I am going to pay more for a meal it has to be better than the other pubs & it wasn't. Would I call again, no, there are lots better.

  • 3/5 Sue B. 4 years ago on Google
The meal was ok , but rather " bland " The leeks were in a tasteless white sauce and the rest of the veg looked " tired " and lacked taste The beef was rather tough to cut , but , as long as you had good teeth , was quite flavoursome .The turkey was good , as were the toast potatoes ! I have visited a number of times over the past few years , and was rather disappointed with the meal after previous good experience! I am not given to negative feedback , but on this occasion , I feel I have to share my experience with you in the hope that improvement may be achieved for future diners !

Since the plaxe has been unser new management it has really lovely pub food with an interesting twist in some flavours. Lovely cocktails and a fantastic range of drinks, particularly gin! The service was definitely the highlight with genuinely friendly people serving and one really nice man in particular who would initiate nice, honest conversation. I would highly recommend this place and will definitely be back!

Quite unexpected that when you order a lamb kebab, you have 4 tiny pieces of meat and 100 grilled onions to cover up for the laxkllck of meat. Good flavours, only reason why it got 2 starts, and the atmosphere is nice. But wouldn't come here again for food.

Good service. Food reasonable but have had better for the price. Although I would not say it was over priced. Big servings. A little overcooked for our liking. But this may not always be the case. And there was certainly nothing we would complain about as such.

Friendly staff. I took my elderly great auntie for lunch. Her fish fillet was tiny under lots of batter for £11, but my lamb kebab was beautifully presented, really tasty with well marinated meat and fresh interesting flavoured delicious salad. I'd say portions were not generous, but adequate for us.

Food was well cooked, but sizes varied between orders of the same meal. Deserts were nice but were not as described in the menu, eg caramel sauce instead of chocolate, and standard vanilla ice cream rather than vanilla pod

Really enjoyed our meal here! We've been before about 3 years ago so thought we'd make another trip, and although the menu had changed, the food was as good as remembered! Surprisingly lively for a Tuesday lunchtime, but plenty of space both inside and outside too.

The food was great, however the service was extremely slow and poor! Our order was taken fairly quickly however the food took ages to come. 3 hours for a 3 course meal. My starter was forgotten about, we had to ask for cutlery. We had to ask to order more drinks. They didn’t take any empty glasses away and it took ages for them to take away empty plates. They asked if we wanted to see a dessert menu and half an hour later they still didn’t bring over a menu. I then had to get up and ask for them to take our dessert order. It then took another half an hour for the desserts to be brought out. The pub wasn’t even busy and we were the first ones in at 12 o’clock. The older lady taking phone calls and behind the bar was very rude. For example when she opened up the pub at 12 she didn’t even say hello. Extremely poor experience, definitely would not rush to go back or recommend this to anyone.

We booked a table for 12 adults plus a small child for 12.30 pm,. We arrived at 12.15 to find that the table had been split into 2, meaning we could not all sit together as a family. Drinks order was taken and took ages to arrive. Should have guessed right there and then that things were not going to go well. Eventually, the waitress took our food orders. Despite chasing twice to find out where the starters were, it took over an hour for four items to be served. Three times we chased the main courses and by this time, the toddler was very hungry as it was well past her meal time. Four desserts were served and eaten before the remaining desserts even arrived. Whilst the food was adequate, the service was dreadful and absolutely appalling. It appeared that the ploy was to keep you waiting so that more drinks could be purchased. Time to pay the bill - funny how quickly that was sorted. We spoke to the "duty manager" about the poor service but that was met with a shrug of the shoulders and no apology. Not even the offer of a cup of coffee (which was stewed and bitter in any case, so we would have refused) or any explanation for the lengthy delays. We finally left at 3.45 pm and couldn't wait to get out. Needless to say, we won't be coming back and we will be making sure that friends and family are aware of how bad this experience was.

Our meal at The Folly today was just fantastic as was the friendliness of the people who work there. A lady called Sharon gave me a fantastic surprise of a free Yorkshire pudding meal as I was the prize winner of the week. She was genuinely pleased for us and was just so lush. We will use this place as regular as we possibly can.
