We had a very pleasant afternoon exploring the castle and its grounds. The route from the car park is quite a steep Hill. There is a shuttle bus but we braved it and managed to walk up the hill. There is seating halfway up if you need it. The castle itself is well maintained and very interesting. There are lots of artefacts on show. We were able to explore in our own time and were not hurried by the wardens on duty. There is a dungeon and a tower. We went on to explore part of the garden and that was attractive. There are lovely views of the surrounding area. We walked back down the hill and had an ice cream at the kiosk near the entrance. There is a second-hand bookshop, a cafe and plenty of car parking. As National Trust members we were able to enter free but for adults who are not members it's £15.40. We enjoyed our visit and had a very pleasant afternoon.

The car park is a good size and has disabled spaces. There is a play area next to it to let the children run off some energy. You walk through the kitchen garden and a beautiful picnic area to the castle. The castle is up a steep hill but there is a shuttle bus if you cannot walk it. The castle is stunning with such incredible artifacts and paintings. The rooms are so beautifully decorated and were being restored as we walked through. Then you can walk through the garden which are also lovely. Well maintained with all sorts of flowers in them. Then at the bottom stunning views across the Cheshire planes. There is a national trust cafe which serves the usual tea room food and drink. All the staff are friendly and helpful. National Trust members have free entry. Well worth a visit. Such a wonderful place to spend the day exploring.

Free to National Trust members. The car park is at the bottom of steep hill that runs up to the castle. There is a free shuttle bus that runs you to and from the castle. There are cafes at the car park and castle that are reasonable price. At the time we went you had to prebook and social distancing was required. From the castle there are beautiful views across the countryside. Part of the castle is still lived in. A number of rooms are open and the servant quarter. The rooms are beautifully decorated for the period they are set in.

We spent a good four hours here. Would probably have spent the whole day if it was a bit warmer. Cost us £14 each to get in. National Trust. Worth it. The gardens are beautiful, with so much to look at. Liked the touch of putting up chalk boards explaining what gardeners were doing and what was flowering at the time. Easily killed an hour in the gardens before the castle opened. We had to queue as they were keeping a safe distance between people entering. It was worth the wait. And for kids, the queue forms around a square of grass which seems to become a children’s gymnastic floor, wrestling floor or race ground. Once inside, the rooms are beautiful. Some of the best I have seen recently. There is also a restaurant/café that does hot food and drinks, cakes etc. Plenty of seating. The castle is set in a large deer park and there is plenty of walking to be done if you want to.

Fabulous place! Stopped here as an alternative to services on a long journey and what a treat it was! Easy to park and a takeaway cafe, play area and toilets near the car park which was perfect! Short walk (up a steep hill) to the castle or there is a minibus! The castle didn't open til twelve so we made the most of the fabulous walk as mapped out on the leaflet. The grounds and gardens are stunning. The topiary is fantastic. It made me think of Alice in Wonderland. There is a stunning view at the edge of the gardens. The castle itself has a fascinating history and the volunteers (as ever) were informative and friendly! The cafe is in the courtyard and the tables outside give you a lovely panorama of the castle. There are more toilets here too. Throughly recommended a visit here.

Lovely visit to the gardens only today. Castle set up high with a steep walk up to castle and gardens. There is a shuttle bus provided free for those unable to walk up The driver was excellent friendly and helpful. The cafe is very nice with lots of seating and accessible for those in wheelchairs. Most enjoyable visit.

Great day out. If these walls could talk they would have some great tales to tell. Really enjoyed seeing everything from the dungeon to the stately rooms to the servants room. After a lovely coffee from the cafe it was a lovely walk around the beautiful gardens. If you can get on the guided tour I'd highly recommend it, there is some fascinating stories. There isn't much time to take any photos on the tour but that's ok as you can go back round afterwards on your own and take as much time as you want and as many photos as you want then.

Had a really enjoyable afternoon there, about 5 1/2hrs. There was seating for food when you got there, easy access toilets. The ice-cream was best by the first area rather than in the actual castle grounds. Good park, beautiful gardens, nice rooms in castle though less than I expected. Would go back.

Cracking castle with plenty of parking and a beautiful drive up. You can either walk or catch the minibus upto the castle as the walk is up a steep incline. In the castle courtyard there is a shop, toilets and a cafe which has the usual cakes, including a rather nice gluten free chocolate brownie and drinks. Plenty of the castle is open to explore like the Adams Tower which contains some fine ornate plaster freezes, Knight dressing up where children and adults can dress up in chain mail, helmets and shields to get a feeling of what it would be like as a soldier and down to the dungeon.

Another great place to visit as a National Trust Member with good clean toilets in the entrance complex were there is also a shop plus small food and drink outlet plus a ice cream bar although we visited in autumn so wasn't feeling an ice cream 🤣, the road up to the castle was fairly steep and gave a good workout but a shuttle bus was available for anyone not able or wanting to do the walk and once at the castle we had a good look around and although it didn't take that long to get around it was good to see with lots of info and guides. Then we had a good and lengthy look around the gardens and grounds utilising the excellent woodland walks which had a quiz type challenge for the young or anyone else to complete, there was also plenty of picnic places and a playground for the kids and good free parking, all in all a lovely day out.

Beautiful setting with very interesting Garden areas, kept up by staff and volunteers. Lovely walk up to it, if you are minded to. Good restaurant and toilet facilities. Helpful and knowledgeable staff inside the building. Beautiful and interesting to visit..

We have never been before but glad we went today. Lots of free parking and a shuttle bus to take you up the hill which was nice. The Gardens were lovely and the castle was nice, not many rooms to look at but enough to spend a few hours with an ice-cream at the end. The volunteers were friendly and the shop well stocked. Beautiful views of the Staffordshire and Cheshire plains.

This is a whole day attraction. As you will not only be visiting the castle interior but the grounds and gardens. It is National Trust and has a £15 entrance fee for adults. Parking is free. There is a free shuttle bus to take you to and from the castle, if you do not wish to walk up the winding road to the entrance gate. The interior has people in each section to answer questions. As well as information journals on the rooms history and the items within. The castle is over several levels and even into its dungeon. Great for the family. The castle that is, not the dungeon.

Chirk Castle is a wonderful National Trust property and definitely has something for everyone. My husband and I love walking through the gardens and the fields around the property (and stopping by the cafe of course!). Opening times of various things do vary with COVID restrictions, so be sure to check the website before visiting!

Fabulous views. Lovely gardens. Extensive walks available. Castle impressive but not open. Given decent weather a day could be spent there. Walking and picnicking. Given decent weather! One cannot have everything I suppose. Would recommend a visit.Pray for sunshine and the castle open.

This is a great place to visit. Plenty to see inside the castle and really interesting. There is also the fantastic gardens to explore anytime of the year. There is a large estate and several suggested walks. As you would expect with National Trust, there is a car park, toilets and cafe.

It was a very rainy day when we visited Chirk Castle and the gardens there. We just missed the castle tour but instead took the garden tour conducted by Marilyn. A very informative session and even though it was very wet, the vastness of the gardens and the amount of work and effort it takes to maintain the grounds was evident. Marilyn was very knowledgeable about the herb gardens and we enjoyed our tour despite the weather. As for the castle, many of the rooms could be better illuminated, which is why I did not rate the castle 5.

Brilliant day out at chirk castle. We'll worth a visit, as the pictures show you. Added bonus they have a seaway experience you can book. At 60 I thought why not and for an hour I explored the grounds of the castle . Was a lot of fun

Everyone of the staff were friendly and helpful. Due to an injury, had to get the shuttle bus between pay kiosk and castle. The driver was lovely. The castle is so interesting, greeted at the door by a lovely lady, information books in every room and very friendly, chatty stewards The courtyard cafe had a lovely range of hot/cold drinks and iced coffee was on the menu. Perfect on a hot day . Again, without exception, the staff , they really do make the visit special. Gardens are well kept ,info boards again and fabulous views. Really enjoyed our visit here .

Had a lovely time here. There isn't much to see as the castle isn't full of items but there is lots of history at Chirk, the staff are friendly and informative so feel free to ask for added details. Cafe & shop are typically priced for National Trust properties with a good variety of items available. There is additional seating in the castle cafe but not overtly signed posted and neither is the way out so you do find the entrance gets crowded. The gardens are beautiful and the woodland walk is equally enjoyable. We visited over the Easter Bank holidays and it was busy but it didn't feel crowded because it is such a big space.

Visited in August 2019, on my Wales holiday. The castle is on a hill with lovely view around. At first I looked around at the ground and estate, which is very pretty and calm, and because we had lovely sunny weather, lots of people had picnic and family chill out. When I spent a few hours outside, headed to the castle. They asked me to put my backpack to my front, which became a common requirements in many places for a short while. I am not too happy with that if I see that not everyone does this, and I feel very uncomfy to walk like this. Anyway, I can understand, just not feeling good with that. The castle is big enough and has a lovely art collection, taking pics is OK. When we leave, step back to the courtyard, which has cafe/tea room/ice-cream, toilets, etc. And of course it is crowded enough. Still from here we can see some other doors with stairs behind them, lead up to the tower and down to the dungeon. I missed both, because the old worn stone staircases did't seem too friendly for me. But of course people are younger and more fit than me, can easily handle them. All in one, this a very nice castle in a nice place and can be a perfect day out for anyone, especially in good weather.

I had a fantastic day at Chirk Castle, the property is unique and it is interesting to see the old castle vs newer living areas. The grounds and garden are gorgeous and so varied too! We wish the little squash court building would be opened to the public. We had a lovely lunch up at the castle where they were able to offer me various Gluten Free options too. I would definitely recommend and would love to go back.

Nice National Trust property doing well to keep up with the COVID-19 regulations. It is a little hard to find so keep an eagle eye out for the brown signs on the way. Staff and volunteers were very friendly and helpful. Not as much of the castle was as accessible as we had hoped - I don't know if that was COVID or business as usual! There's certainly plenty of space. And don't miss out the pleasure grounds as we nearly did.

  • 4/5 Kim M. 2 years ago on Google
Nice place to visit but only takes about 1/2 hour to get a good look around. Although they sell tickets for entry earlier the castle does not open till 12 noon. If weather nice beautiful grounds to walk around, if not your stuck in tea room.

  • 5/5 Paul T. 2 years ago on Google
Simply amazing! One of the National trust properties not to miss. In true National trust tradition, the staff were very helpful and friendly, and the grounds and the castle are immaculate.

The house is nice to walk through. Not terribly big, but there are some lovely things to see. Leave your backpack on a peg as you go in. There are toilets and a shop available. The grounds are large and lots of flowers in bloom. On a beautiful day, this is a lovely place to walk around. National Trust site

A great day out. Wonderful parkland, woods and formal gardens to walk around. Castle tour inside is worth while and there are two cafes and a shop on site. NT properties are really worth while visiting.

  • 4/5 Graham K. 6 months ago on Google
A lovely place to walk around. The castle itself was lovely however if you aren't a national trust member, it would be a bit pricey for a relatively small indoor space to walk around and enjoy.

  • 4/5 Brian R. 9 months ago on Google
Really beautiful castle I had never heard of before. Well worth a visit and wander around, give yourself time for walking the grounds or at least the formal gardens. I would have given this a five star but I think it's missing a few rooms I would have hoped to have seen which are normally great in these places such as the old kitchen, bedrooms etc Definitely well worth a visit. Combine it with visiting Chirk aquaduct

Fantastic place for half a day out with the family. There are nice walks around beautiful gardens and views. You can hire a Segway if you like, and they lend mobility scooters for those disabled people. There is plenty to see inside the castle as well, including underground prison rooms.

  • 5/5 emma R. 9 months ago on Google
Beautiful Castle, beautiful gardens, beautiful Forest, archery games, dogs welcome outside and inside the main centre part of Castle which is all open as it has no roof, outside seating for cafe so dogs are welcome there. interesting history inside the Castle, very interesting costumes to look at and try on, they have a cafe, toilets, disabled access downstairs, although there are stairs which can be very steep if walking up the turrets. No lift available for disabled people unfortunately. However, for disabled people, there is still lots to see around and inside the Castle as well as the gardens, food produce growing Garden's which feed the cafe, and forestry tracks

Loved this place I went a few years back when I was pregnant with my son and was unable to get down to the dungeon as I was to top heavy, so I vowed to return! So I did and my son and I loved it. The staff are brilliant as all nat trust staff are the gardens are beautiful and the castle itself is great

  • 5/5 Polly W. 1 year ago on Google
As always, National Trust properties are always impressive. Great parking for motorhomes, plenty of space. Then there's a shuttle bus operating to take you up to the castle. Last bus back currently is 3.45. It's quite a steep walk up, and windy, so great if fit, if not it's probably wise to use the bus. £15 adult entry if not a member. Gardens at the base as is the NT shop. Plenty to see at the castle. State rooms, a fabulous long hall, and music room. There's a dungeon which is easily accessible, uneven stone steps, but a solid rope rail to hang on too. There's a servants room outside in the courtyard and the cafe staff were lovely as were the guides in the castle. We were incredibly lucky, very few tourists today, so great access to everything. Some really interesting stories from the guides. We had a good 3 hours here, so allow plenty of time ... also some fun time trying on helmets !!!! Exit road does take you back to where you started.

Really nice castle to visit ,there’s plenty of free parking more than enjoy walking for a dog a lovely shop as you go through the entrance also a play area for kids with an outdoor cafe. The castle is a small walk up the hill or there is a mini bus that does shuttle runs up and down. Once in the castle every room is well kept and stunning to see also it’s worth going down into the dungeon to see how prisoners suffered back in the dark days. All in all a good castle to visit.

  • 5/5 Andrew M. 2 years ago on Google
Great place to visit when in North Wales. The castle is great to wander around inside and has wonderful gardens to walk through. There is ample parking with a short inclined walk up to castle. A shuttle bus for the less able. A really nice cafe at reasonable prices.

  • 4/5 Jill C. 1 year ago on Google
A beautiful setting with amazing grounds. The castle is a sturdy looking squat shape with an interesting history. There is plenty to see-great to be able to walk down into the dungeons as well as servants hall. The castle rooms are beautiful. Staff and volunteers are friendly and welcoming. The cafe in the courtyard had a good selection of reasonable priced goods and a beautiful cool additional seating area -particularly welcome during the hot spell.

  • 5/5 Rachel O. 1 year ago on Google
Very impressive Castle! The walks around it are even better. We were staying in Lady Margaret’s campsite and it was great to have so much accessible land to walk the dogs around every day. We tried to make it there for a sunset one evening but missed it. The views are just stunning. Inside the castle is very cool too, lots of history and fun facts in there. Would highly recommend!

  • 4/5 Simon S. 1 year ago on Google
Excellent castle was a spontaneous decision to visit, and glad we did. Lovely gardens with superb views. Only small part of the castle is open to the public, nevertheless you get a good feel of it. Toilets, nice cafe with plentiful seating, decent size car park. Was quite busy for a Wednesday when we visited. £17 per adult which is not cheap or free of national trust members. Definitely worth a visit.

  • 4/5 Susan N. 3 years ago on Google
Fantastic views over the Welsh Hills great grounds to walk around

  • 5/5 Reg 1 year ago on Google
Very nice National Trust property in North Wales. Plenty of car parking but be aware that although the Castle is only a short distance away it is up a fairly steep drive. There is a shuttle bus from the car park if you feel the climb would be a problem. There is a coffee shop and gift shop near the car park and a cafe inside the castle. Although the castle has been changed over the the years it doesn't take much imagination to realise what an imposing presence it must have had over the surrounding countryside. Excellent knowledgeable room guides.

  • 5/5 Gloria C. 1 year ago on Google
Visited here quite a few times only for the stunning walks with the very best views and gorgeous gardens and woodlands etc. This is the first time we have been in the castle and wow it is definitely a must visit on everyone's bucket list. Lovely cafe within the castle also near the entry to the estate.

  • 5/5 brandon h. 1 year ago on Google
Fantastic day out. There's a nice walk around very flowery gardens, some history and art in the castle building, a cafe that served me a nice Moroccan focaccia, and a nice children's play area with outdoor toys by hawk house. It does cost a bit to get in, but this is negated if you have a national trust pass. While done parts of the castle building aren't easy accessible, they do provide a bus between the entrance on low and the castle on high ground.

  • 5/5 Anne D. 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful and spacious gardens which we really enjoyed walking around. The high position gives amazing views. We took the shuttle bus up and down the hill which conserved our energy for the walk; the driver was very pleasant and fun, we were the only passengers 😃 Despite there being a lot of cars in the ample car park we mostly felt as though we were the only people in the gardens; a wonderful feeling. There were plenty of picnic spaces to choose from. We later had a cup of tea from the small shop in the courtyard. The beautiful weather enhanced our visit.

Delightful visit today (18/10) during confinement to the county. The numbers admitted to the park and gardens is low, the toilets were open and the hot chocolate ('though not quite hot enough) was most welcome. The occasional bottleneck bought out the best in people who "gave way". The gardens and views were lovely, the staff helpful. Book on line and enjoy.

Really lovely day out! My partner and I visited Chirk castle a few months ago, and we had a brilliant time. Unfortunately the castle wasn’t open because of COVID restrictions, however the gardens were so stunning, we didn’t feel we missed out at all. Well organised by the national trust, book online then you have a time to visit, pull up to the tent by the car park and they will check you in. The gardens are open but the castle itself is closed. As per usual the gardens are lovely and everyone social distancing, spot on national trust.

  • 5/5 Laura B. 3 years ago on Google
Absolutely loved our day out at Chirk Castle today. We have recently brought the National Trust membership which works out just over £10 a month which is well worth it as I don't think we'd want to pay the full admission charge to be honest just under £40 for a family. During the current pandemic the indoor areas including the castle are not open. However we still filled 4 hours with a wonderful 2.5 mile woodland walk, plus a wander through the beuatiful gardens and a quick look through the castle courtyard (simply to enjoy the outlook on the castle) although the shop and cafe are open if you want to use these facilities. We felt safe everywhere with limited guest numbers and such a huge estate it meant that social distancing was easy!

Gardens as magnificent as ever but nothing else open to look at, not even the shop which seems bizarre when non food shops have been able to open for three months. NT should be careful they don't lose their visitor base. Loyalty is hard won and easily lost.

Chirk village was a delight to visit. The locals live in a great place. Chirk castle was closed however the grounds were open. Good place to stretch the legs.
