Chittagong
Eye
Infirmary
and
Training
Complex
is
a
multidisciplinary
purpose-built
tertiary
eye
care
institution.
It
has
specific
functions
such
as
ophthalmic
human
resource
development
and
eye
care
services.
It
is
now
recognized
as
one
of
the
major
ophthalmic
centers
in
Bangladesh.
CEITC
provides
eye
services
through
its
main
hospital
and
various
outreach
programs
such
as
Mobile
Eye
Camp,
School
Eye
Heath
Services,
Primary
Eye
Care
Services
and
Under
Five
Clinic
services.
Eye
bank
and
tissue
processing
are
also
available.
There
is
a
separate
well-equipped
outpatient
wing
for
pediatric
ophthalmology,
six
consultation
rooms
–
two
for
pediatric
ophthalmologists,
one
for
orthoptic,
one
for
pediatric
refraction,
one
for
pediatric
counseling
and
one
for
pediatricians.
There
is
a
separate
registration
room
for
children.
The
facility
also
contains
a
safe
child
play
area
and
a
separate
feeding
room
for
mothers
to
feed
their
babies.
CEITC
provide
500-600
OPD

daily
through
routine
OPD
services
along
with
sub-specialty
services
such
as
Glaucoma,
Cornea-Eye
Bank,
Ocular
Microbiology,
Vitreao-Retina,
Pediatric
Ophthalmology,
Neuro-Ophthalmology,
Orbit-Oculoplasty,
Low
Vision
etc.
There
are
six
modern
surgical
rooms
at
CEITC
of
which
three
are
dedicated
for
posterior
segment,
pediatric
ophthalmology
and
extra
ocular
cases.
CEITC
sees
about
800
patients
daily.
Realizing
the
paucity
of
the
ophthalmic
services
in
the
country
and
the
necessity
of
more
and
urgent
efforts
in
this
sector,
a
group
of
eye
specialist
and
social
workers
joined
together
to
form
a
voluntary
organization
named
Bangladesh
National
Society
for
Blind
(BNSB)
in
1973
with
triple
objectives
of
Prevention,
cure
and
rehabilitation
of
the
blind
and
visually
handicapped
people
through
static
and
mobile
eye
care
services.
The
organization
gave
importance
to
outreach
programs
from
its
very
inception.
It
took
up
mobile
eye
camp
programs
to
reach
services
to
their
doorsteps.
This
drew
attention
of
a
number
of
blind
welfare
workers
at
home
and
aboard.
To
cope
with
ever
expanding
eye
care
activities
throughout
the
county
the
need
for
the
trained
ophthalmic
human
resource
was
felt
acutely,
accordingly
the
institution
has
taken
human
resource
development
programs
for
the
doctors,
nurse,
paramedics
and
other
technical
personnel.
In
1991,
the
establishment
of
the
institute
of
“
Community
Ophthalmology
of
the
University
of
Chittagong
at
Chittagong
Eye
Infirmary
and
Training
Complex
is
a
milestone.
The
institute
offers
courses
in
Community
Ophthalmology
leading
to
diploma
for
doctors
and
has
by
now
made
a
significant
impact
in
the
field
of
community
ophthalmology.
