The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, also known as the Karnaphuli Tunnel, stands as a significant milestone for Bangladesh as the first underwater tunnel road in South Asia. It serves as a crucial infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway. Only four-wheel vehicles are permitted to enter the tunnel, and a toll is required for passage. It offers a quick crossing, completing the journey in around four minutes, with a recommended speed of 60km/h. This development is a testament to the remarkable efforts of the Bangladesh government.

Bangabandhu Tunnel is a significant infrastructure project located in Bangladesh. This underwater tunnel, officially known as the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, connects the districts of Chittagong and Cox's Bazar. It spans approximately 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) beneath the Karnaphuli River, making it the first and longest underwater tunnel in Bangladesh. The tunnel, named after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh, serves as a vital transportation link, facilitating smoother and faster connectivity between the two regions. It has significantly reduced travel time, improved trade, and enhanced overall transportation infrastructure in the country. Constructed to international standards, the Bangabandhu Tunnel includes separate lanes for vehicles, ensuring safe and efficient traffic flow. Its completion marked a milestone in Bangladesh's infrastructure development, contributing to economic growth and regional integration.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel (বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান টানেল) A key to prosperity, the Karnaphuli Tunnel, also known as the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, marks a significant milestone as the first-ever underwater tunnel in South Asia. Spanning 9.39 kilometers in total, with the tunnel itself covering 3.43 kilometers, this infrastructure project is a source of pride for Bangladesh. The tunnel, boasting a diameter of 10.80 meters, is located beneath the Karnaphuli River in the port city of Chittagong. Envisioned to enhance the transportation system in the Chittagong region, the tunnel sets a speed limit of 60 km/h, and the toll for cars and jeeps is set at 200. Anticipated to accommodate over 17,000 vehicles daily, the Karnaphuli Tunnel promises to alleviate the current traffic challenges faced in connecting the banks of Patenga and Anwara. Beyond its role in traffic management, the Bangabandhu Tunnel is poised to become a vital link for the Marine Drive Road, connecting Chattogram to Cox's Bazar. This connection is expected to unlock the tourism potential of South Chattogram and Cox's Bazar, providing easy access to attractions such as Parki Beach in Anwara. Ultimately, the tunnel is set to enhance the overall appeal of the region for tourists.

I was excited to finally get to experience the Bangabandhu Tunnel, and it did not disappoint! The tunnel is a marvel of engineering, and it's amazing to think that it was built under the Karnaphuli River. The drive through the tunnel is smooth and the views are incredible. It's definitely a must-see for anyone visiting Chittagong. It should take about 32 minutes to drive through the Bangabandhu Tunnel via Chittagong Coastal Rd. This is just an estimate, of course, and the actual time may vary depending on traffic conditions. Views from inside the Bangabandhu tunnel:- Illumination: The tunnel is brightly lit with LED lights, creating a futuristic and almost surreal atmosphere. The color scheme often changes, adding to the visual appeal. Tile patterns: The walls are adorned with colorful ceramic tiles in various geometric patterns, providing a sense of visual movement and dynamism. Information displays: Electronic displays throughout the tunnel provide information about speed limits, traffic updates, and emergency exits, adding a functional and informative element to the visual experience. On weekend, this place is little bit crowded.

With the cutter of the tunnel boring machine cutting through the wall, China Communications Construction Company Limited, the EPC Contractor, and China Road and Bridge Corporation, the Constructor, successfully achieved breakthrough of both tubes of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, making the remarkable progress of the first overseas large-diameter underwater TBM tunnel undertaken by Chinese company. Located at the River Mouth in Chattogram, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel Project is 9.3km long, in which the length of tunnel shield section is 2450m while the tunnel outer diameter is 11.8m. With a diameter of 12.12 meters and a weight of 2200 tons, the CCCC self-developed and manufactured large-diameter slurry pressure balanced tunnel boring machine is used for construction of the Project. Facing various difficulties caused by the COVID-19, the Project Department made scientific arrangements and organized in advance to ensure progress per schedule. The construction progress and excellent quality of the Project have been highly recognized and praised by the Bangladeshi employer and international consultants. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel Project is the first underwater Tunnel in South Asia, and also the first overseas large-diameter underwater TBM tunnel undertaken by Chinese Company and an important part of the Belt and Road Initiative. The Project is funded by Export-Import Bank of China, designed and built with Chinese Standard and Chinese machines, implemented and managed by Chinese companies, and will become a shining business card of overseas Chinese Tunnel after completion. The completion of the tunnel Project will greatly improve the traffic conditions in Chattogram, promote economic development of Bangladesh. It also plays an important role in improving the Asian Highway Network, strengthening the connectivity between Bangladesh and neighboring countries, and boosting the international development of Bangladesh.

Before going here, check your car or vehicle is that perfect for up-down hill.In the tunnel, the road is Up & Down that's why there average speed is 60KM/H. The driver should maintain the speed and they don’t have permission to stop in the tunnel. The stop is start from Patenga Sea beach and it’s end in Chattori,Chowmoni,Anowara.By tunnel, any one can easily go to Coxbazar or Baskhali site without any wasting time and jam. If once have no private car, there is local bus available for tunnel view.
