This place is more like a complex which houses multiple institutions. The main building which is what is called fort is closed at this time for restoration/renovation. There is a museum in the premises. The perimeter has the fort walls over which you can walk around but has to be maintained well. You can see the city from different corners. There is parking area outside and entry to fort premises is free. Located oin city centre, it's easily accessible. Worth a visit.

The main building was under renovation but we got to see the museum and the surrounding area. The greenery and natural sunlight during daytime makes this a great place for photography. There is ample parking space as well. There are two entrances to the place, the second one being via a Ganesh temple that is attached to the main compound. You can get a nice view of the town from the fort ramparts.

Madikeri Fort, also called Mercara Fort, is a fort in Madikeri. First built by Mudduraja in the second half of the 17th century. Mudduraja also built the palace within the fort .Β It was rebuilt into a fort of stone and bricks by Tipu Sultan, who gave it the name of Jaffarabad. In 1814, the fort was built with mortar and bricks by the Lingarajendra Wodeyar II. There have been battles which the fort has seen and thus represents a rich historical and cultural background. In 1790, it came under the control of Doddavira Rajendra. Later it was renovated by Tipu Sultan. This reconstruction was followed by the renovation by the King Lingarajendra Wodeyar II. The Madikeri Fort is open onΒ all days except Monday. 10 am to 5 pm. No parking fees, one musume is there ticket is Rs. 10 for adults and Rs.5 for age 6-14.

The fort was under renovation when we went there. There is no entry fee for the fort but there is a charge if you want to visit the museum, the museum is present just at the entrance opposite to the fort and costs around β‚Ή10/- per head. You can walk around the fort by climbing up the wall of the fort. There are two elephant statues from where you can climb up the wall. You can see the whole of Coorg from above those walls. You can visualize how the wall must have been used by the kings military to watch out for the enemies. There are spaces between the walls that must have been used by archers and shooters. While walking on the wall around the palace you can see old stables etc, those are not maintained now.

Small fort and architecture is from the days of British times. The bldg has been converted into govt office now. Got a nice view from the top, of madikeri. Kids would love the garden area as it has got elephant dummies. It also got a small temple inside the fort premises.

There's quite literally nothing much here to see. Just a dilapidated building with fort walls surrounding it. Entry to the fort is not allowed. We were, in fact, not allowed to even go near the building, and were asked to leave soon. Towards the exit at the main gate, there's a small museum which you may explore, in case you wish to. The museum too has not many artifacts or history.

Fort is a historical and cultural attraction in Coorg, Karnataka. It was first built by Mudduraja in the 17th century and later renovated by Tipu Sultan and the British. The fort has a palace, a church, a museum and several temples inside. The fort also has two stone statues of elephants at the entrance, which are said to be the guardians of the fort. The fort is open from 10 am to 5:30 pm on all days except Mondays. There is no entry fee to visit the fort. The fort is located on Stuart Hill, which offers a scenic view of the surrounding hills and valleys. The fort is also close to other places of interest in Coorg, such as Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat and Nagarhole National Park. Madikeri Fort is a must-visit for anyone who wants to experience the rich history and heritage of Coorg. The fort has a lot of interesting exhibits and artifacts that showcase the life and culture of the people who lived here. The fort also has a peaceful atmosphere and a pleasant climate throughout the year.

A nice fort. Maybe at the beginning they were ruined by building government offices / schools. The fort was very well built to protect from war. Museum is small but worth watching everything.

Karnataka Government is maintaining this as a landmark of historical era. But visitors are least bothered to keep the surroundings clean and tidy. It looks a thrilling place but used it as a garbage by visitors. Please respect historical places.

This is not the place where we as a tourist want to visit as a fort. Totally disappointed. Got to know that it is now converting to govt office and started renovation also. Let's hope for a good place in the coming future if not as a fort at least as a good tourist spot.

This place was not maintained properly and there isn't more to visit. The building was old and still has those cannon places where they use all the artillery, large calibre guns and their hideout. These were nice to view. It would be nice if they maintained it properly.

The museum is small but has a nice collection from statues to coins and Tibetan art, stuffed animals to royal clothes, seals and arms. Take a walk around the wall of the fort to get a 360 degree view of the entire city. There is another gate to enter the fort and there is a small temple hidden in that entrance

This could have been one amazing place. The fort is kept in a bad shape. No write up, no guides and absolutely no care about this heritage place. Do read about the history of this place before visiting. It will then make this place worth a visit. The museum is a good addition too. However I'm worried about the way artifacts are kept. There was some work going on when we visited this place... Hoping that it's for the good.

This is one of the place where you can visit during your Coorg trip. It is in centre of Coorg. Most portion is closed because of some construction. There is one museum also here. Parking is inside here . You can visit it within 1-2 hrs.

The fort is really grand but it's maintenance and development has not being done properly by the administration. There's a very old beautiful church which has been unfortunately converted into a museum. Although the artefacts kept there is worth watching, it should have been displayed at a different building. The sanctity of the church should have been maintained. It really hurts to see a holy place being used so recklessly. The old court building near the fort would have been worth viewing from inside but as some renovations were being done we could view it's historical grandness from outside only. Overall the place could be a great place to visit with a bit of assistance from the government administration to make a few changes to upkeep the place.

Today, the Madikeri Deputy Commissioner's Office is housed in the palace building, while St. Mark's Church houses the Madikeri Fort Museum, managed by the Karnataka State Archaeological Department. The museum has exhibits which display artifacts and weaponry from the time between the fort's construction and British rule. The museum also has a large portrait of Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa. The church was constructed in 1859 by soldiers of the East India Company, with funding from the Madras Presidency. The church was administered by the Madras Diocese of the Church of England, but was closed after Indian independence, and taken over by the Government of Karnataka in 1971. Madikeri Fort also called Mercara Fort is a fort in Madikeri, in the Kodagu district of the Indian state of Karnataka, first built by Mudduraja in the second half of the 17th century. Mudduraja also built the palace within the fort. It was rebuilt and restructured in granite by Tipu Sultan, and the site was then renamed Jaffarabad. Madikeri Fort is one of the many forts built or rebuilt by Tipu Sultan during his reign in the second half of the 18th century. In 1790, Dodda Vira Rajendra took control of the fort. The British made additions to the fort in 1834. The palace underwent renovations by Linga Rajendra II from 1812-1814.Notable structures in the fort include two stone statues of elephants at the northeast entry and a church in the southeast corner.

There’s nothing to see in this fort except 2 elephant sculptures, palace building from outside ,compound wall & lord vinayaka temple also there . it’s waste of time to visit this place (can skip this fort & museum blindly ). If you come madikeri by afternoon then it’s better to go mandalpatti and abbey falls instead of this fort & museum(it’ll save you are time ).

An ancient fort and palace along with a church is seen in the campus. The church is now turned into a musium. A court building in the campus is under renovation now. The old palace (?) building is under damaged conditions. Proper renovation and maintenance may attract a trendy crowd.

It will be too much to call it a fort. May be in old time it was a fort but now this is in very bad shape. There is just a big wall and people mostly walk upon it. You can barely tell which side of this wall is the fort. There is not a single person or any sign board to guide people. We visited this place but could not find that a small museum was also there. Very bad maintained. It could be a better place for sure if only they have looked it after.

Madikeri Fort is a historical gem nestled in the heart of Madikeri. Stepping into its grounds feels like a journey back in time, offering a glimpse into the region's rich heritage. The fort's architecture, though weathered, exudes a captivating charm. Its stone walls echo tales of the past, while the surrounding panoramic views add to the allure. The museum inside showcases artifacts and relics, shedding light on Coorg's cultural legacy. However, some areas might benefit from restoration efforts to preserve its historical significance. Overall, Madikeri Fort remains a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and those seeking a glimpse into Coorg's captivating past.

This fort is not much of great place to visit in Madikere if you are coming for one or two day tour in Madikere. Due to corona, you won't be allowed in Museum, so only thing you can see is single wall of fort and nothing much. Instead spend time elsewhere in Madikere.

We visited this place in our stay at madekeri. It's an old fort right in the city of madekeri at a height. It's probably built by the raja of madekeri. There is a museum here also which was unfortunately close that day due to public holiday. It's a small fort but looks strong with it's thick surrounding walls. Two statues of elephants are there. With two old buildings of palaces, and a British era building, probably converted into museum. Some small artillery guns are there, but can't say there is much to see except the museum which was closed that day.

Poorly maintained place with great historical importance. The government could invest more for better experience. Many businesses have experienced the problem of fake reviews and it seems β€˜some’ local guides play a part in the problem. It should be said the majority of local guides use the system fairly, but there is a growing population of local guides posting fake reviews at the detriment of local businesses. You may have already seen fake reviews from local guides. Fake reviews are a common problem and we have had numerous customers inform us about them. Recently, we realized how deep rooted the problem is. Then, we started to investigate the matter further. A client who makes themed carts and takes them to weddings, birthdays and other events informed us about a review she recently had from a customer she’s never heard of. She doesn’t deal with that many customers and knows who they all are. This person left a bad star rating but made no comments.

Constructed by Madduraja in 17th Century, the fort stands today in a deteriorated state. The church adjoining the fort now functions as an archaeological museum. The palace was closed for reconstruction when we visited (as on 27th Aug 2021). The general maintenance of the compound seemed good but the buildings seem to be dilapidated. Though you can enjoy evenings here reminiscing of Madikeri's past and walk around enjoying the cool climate throughout the year.

It's not a fort, it's a govt office. There is a useless museum for which they charge 10 RS entry charge. Only the boundary wall is like you have in real forts. There are 2 elephants but you can view a bigger and better one in Raja's seat. You may go there is you just need to kill time or just want to do some walking. In monsoons and during rain it would still better but please avoid completely in full sun or summers.

This place has a lot of spots that need some good historical explanation for the tourists. The museum feels like a storeroom for all the items they found, and later put a label on it. There's little to none explaination and there's no story behind how it was found or what's the significance of what is being displayed. It would be a great place if there were guides available at the place to hire for a tour.

β€’ Visiting Madikeri Fort was a journey through time, immersing us in the rich history of Coorg. β€’ The fort is strategically located, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. β€’ The architecture is a testament to the region's heritage, with its distinctive style and intricate detailing. β€’ Exploring the fort's various sections, including the palace, prison, and museum, was both educational and fascinating. β€’ The museum housed a collection of artifacts, photographs, and displays that provided insights into the local culture and history. β€’ The well-preserved ramparts and bastions added an authentic touch to the fort's ambiance. β€’ The fort's surroundings were well-maintained, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. β€’ The information boards and guides within the fort were helpful in understanding its historical significance. β€’ While the fort is an impressive attraction, it could benefit from additional signage and detailed explanations of its historical context. β€’ It would have been great to have more interactive elements or audio guides to enhance the visitor experience. β€’ Despite these minor areas for improvement, Madikeri Fort is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and anyone curious about Coorg's past. β€’ The fort offers a glimpse into the region's heritage and is a valuable cultural landmark. β€’ Overall, our visit to Madikeri Fort was enlightening and enjoyable, and we recommend it as a significant historical site in Coorg.

Madikeri fort is a good place to visit. Nothing much to see. Just the museum and the surroundings. The museum exhibits are interesting and I recommend checking them out. Another interesting thing in the fort was the lookout post, where there is one hole or opening at one end and three on the other side. When you change the viewing angle, we can see three different locations from the same spot. it was used to see three different locations during the enemy invasion. There is ample parking. Being a tourist destination, authorities can maintain this fort in a better way.

A small fort in Coorg. It is at the city centre. They have museum also inside it. Entry to the museum has an entry fees. You can move around the fort which is free. You can see the city from the fort. It has parking space also available inside the fort. So please don’t worry with parking. Overall it’s a good place to visit but not a wow compared to the other Indian forts. You can complete the fort tour in an hour & half max.

The fort is situated within the city. The old fort is in currently lying in dilapidated condition and closed for people to visit, one can only walk along the periphery wall of the fort, which offers practically no exciting view. A new building is under construction. The fort complex also houses a tiny Govt. run museum, temple and elephant statues. There is no entry fee, few parking available and entry closed at 6 pm. Nothing much to do or see, nothing to lose if missed.

Madikeri Fort, a testament to Coorg's rich history, was first built in the 17th century by Mudduraja. Its evolution over centuries, including a major rebuild by Tipu Sultan and later by Lingarajendra Wodeyar II, adds layers to its historical significance. The fort features notable structures like two elephant statues at the entrance and a church, now housing the Madikeri Fort Museum. The palace inside the fort currently serves as the Deputy Commissioner's Office, blending administrative roles with historical preservation. Additionally, the fort is home to the Kote Maha Ganapathi temple, known for its participation in the Madikeri Dasara festival.

Also Called Mercala Fort. Madikeri Fort is one of the interesting places for sightseeing in Coorg. It was first built in the last quarter of the 17th century by Mudduraja. There was a palace built inside the fort as well. It was rebuilt into a fort of stone and bricks by Tipu Sultan, who gave it the name of Jaffarabad. British also renovated the fort twice. In the year of 1933, a clock tower and a portico to park the commissioner's car were added in the complex. And now it serves as the office of the Deputy Commissioner. As you enter the fort, you will see two life-sized elephants made of mortar. Inside the inner fort, there was a temple dedicated to Virabhadra which was removed by the British in the year of 1855 so as to build an Anglican Church in its place. The Church presents beautiful architecture with Gothic style. Now it has been converted into a museum and offers tourists with varied kinds of antiques related to the land of Coorg. The museum is now maintained by the state archaeology department. There are other buildings as well inside the fort. These are Mahatma Gandhi Public Library, the Kote Maha Ganapathi temple and the district prison. Kote Maha Ganapathi temple is one of the temples which compete for the Madikeri Dasara festival.
