My Dad has owned Stern's Gym since 1992 and he has done a great job with keeping that old school feel to it. I love this gym and the people that workout there, And if you're ever in San Diego you have to visit Stern's gym!

I use to go to this gym for years. Then one day the owner went to prison for steroids. During that time the gym became ran down and a large percentage of the equipment was broken . I continuedto stay at this gym with broken equipment for a long while. When the owner got out of prison I asked him if he would consider a discount renewal cost for the inconveniences of having broken equipment for so long. He was very rude and a verbal disagreement erupted. I have zero respect for a place that had zero respect for my patronage and loyality

I was in town for a few days for the ACSM conference and I found this gym thankfully,as it was a great experience! Lonnie is the nicest dude and the vibe is classic '70s bodybuilding. He even went out of his way to get me a custom printed sweatshirt since they were out of stock when I had asked if they had any. If you're in the San Diego area, definitely make it a priority to visit this gym!

I don't write reviews, in fact this is my FIRST REVIEW EVER! I love everything about Stern's Gym except the owner. Give him a call and see how he treats you. The owner had no clue who I was nor had he ever met me. I got maybe 4 words out before I was berated trying to ask if the gym is currently open. Learn to talk to people with respect Shannon. I have a Youtube channel with over 150k subscribers and a client base of 50. I am training for my first bodybuilding show. I also live in San Diego. I would have loved to promote Sterns. Not anymore.

Stern's Gym is one of the oldest gym's in the country. Loynie and his staff go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Everyone is welcome at Stern's. You will find generations training at this no nonsense gym, where everyone knows your name. Getting up the stairs is the hardest part!

The best gym in North Park, hands down. No question. Nice neighborhood gym with origins from 1946 as a world renowned body builder gym! Still lots of impressive body builders work out at Stern's , but it brings in a whole cross section of people from our community. Loynie, the proprietor, is also my personal trainer and he is AWESOME!

Very good gym in San Diego! It has great history and very friendly atmosphere. Love the equipment here. I was lucky enough to meet the owner. Wish i lived closer!

Oldest Gym in the US a definite visit for any gym rat. Everything about this gym is simply perfect and can not be replicated by any other gym. I'll put it number one on my list ahead of Gold's Venice

Stern’s gym is a Mecca for any gym enthusiast to visit. Legends from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Chris Bumstead have trained here. This place had an amazing atmosphere, kind staff, and quality equipment that you won’t find elsewhere. The management was nice enough to give me and my cousins a day pass since we were visiting from out of town. Even as an out-of-state visitor, I’m definitely going to get my workouts here every time I visit my family in San Diego. I definitely recommend grabbing a hat or shirt since this place has cool gym merch. Pictured below is me (with my new Stern’s shirt) and Mr. Loynie Brown!

ive been frequenting this gym since 1979, as a navy wrestler and fell into powerlifting and bodybuilding leo was a no nonsense non-pc kind of guy.he told you the truth about your abilitities made you prove to yourself about your abilities and limitations with one look he can tell how far you will go.he didnt believe in everybody gets a trophy just for participating , no false hopes from him. hard work and earning yours made you appreciate what you have gained in life and treasure it. i was privileged that he decided to train me and guide me to a few bodybuilding titles the very first npc national military championships at pendelton at the time, the first. from pro wrestlers to football players and top bodybuilding champions have workout there for these reasons no frills, respect for everyone, no distractions even arnie and big lou had to pay dues. everybody starts on an equal plain here.leo believed in practical muscle aestetic to the eye and useful to your life. proud to have been the last to learn leo sterns training and posing philosophy, even the old time strength tshow tricks . shannon the sherman tank is a bodybuilder with a very interesting atheletic pass himself continues with the traditions thank you shannon.

Great old school hardcore gym, like waking into the 80s (well the music was all west coast rap from the 90s which was great). The manager was great! Definitely workout there again the next time I’m in San Diego

I’ve visited Sterns three separate occasions. First time I purchased a day pass ($17), second time I was with a member and used a free pass and bought a $30 shirt, and today I was turned away with attitude and made to feel like a bad person. I attempted to use another pass my buddy had but I was told that I was not allowed to use this as I’ve been in before (doesn’t say that rule anywhere, otherwise I wouldn’t have tried it). My buddy also apologized and wasn’t aware of this. We were both ready to lift on 300mg of caffeine. To be honest if the attendant hadn’t treated me like I was trying to steal meals from the homeless I would’ve gladly paid for a day pass since I was already there, but you gotta draw the line somewhere.

We were visiting from out of town and thought it would be cool to train here one of our vacation days. We were so glad we dropped into this super cool old school bodybuilding gym. Got a great lift in and could not have felt more welcome. Loynie, the owner introduced himself and chatted for a few minutes. Everyone else was super courteous as well. We will definitely return if we find ourselves back in town.

This gym is legit. Had to hit it up atleast once while I was in the area and definitely would recommend to anyone serious about working out.

Absolutely incredible gym and atmosphere. The equipment is so cool and old school, loved everything about this gym. One thing in particular I really appreciated was the straight bar attachment for the Lat pull-down machine. It’s a shame that very few gyms have this and I was so happy that this gym did! You can really come and train hard here. The owner was very kind and welcoming, he even gave me a free shirt for visiting. Left a lasting impression on me that I’ll always remember. Thank you for the awesome experience!

Classic old school gym with Everything you need to train- 3 squatracks, benches, heavy dumbbels, all the good items... really nice staff. Everybody was very helpful and warm. The atmosphere ist great. Good parken Options around the gym (some for free). 8$ for a 1-day Pass is a fair price. You can buy gym clothes, drinks and supplements. Top!!

It is a true gym! No makeup, just sweat! There are pictures all over the wall of current and former bodybuilders/fitness models that have frequented at Stern's. Owner is friendly and helpful...received personal training that was extremely helpful!

Stopped by with my cousins 2 months ago just to give it a look since Arnold Schwarzenegger trained here before. The owner is super cool, let us tour the gym, offered us free tshirts and a one day free gym pass. Since I don’t live in SD, I haven’t been able to use my pass yet, but I most definitely will! The vibe was not intimidating as I assumed it could be. The equipment was a mix of old school and modern, and everything was in top condition. Just based on the short experience, the owner made it a memorable one. Hope to come back and take advantage of my own day free when I’m in town again.

One of the best gyms in SD, you can definitely feel the nostalgic atmosphere as soon as you step in. For sure gives you that motivation for a great work out. Definitely recommend!
