You'd think being located only so far from Petco park it wouldn't be such a bad place to stay for a week, but I stayed in the private room which looked nice at first but the wallpaper was peeling, there was dirt on the walls, and the room smelled when the fan was off, trash was left in the room for me to discover. The mirrors were dirty and the state of the bathrooms were stomach wrenching. The floors were extremely sticky and creaky which was pretty alarming. It feels like you're staying in a dead and neglected house. Definitely going to a much cheaper and better conditioned hostel after my stay is up. Edit: since the owner replied to this review so passive aggressively, just as they would in person due to him not being able to drink alcohol and talk to girls well beneath his age instead of helping customers. Lastly I thought that the many other reviews brought the poor health standards and disgusting nature of this hostel to light enough for the owner to realize how filthy it actually is.

This hostel isn’t great. It clearly doesn’t get deep cleaned very often because the whole place just looks and feels dirty. The rooms are tiny and the mattresses are so firm I wake up with an ache in my lower back every hour. There’s no A/C unit in my room (even the worst hostels I’ve stayed in have them in every room) so it’s boiling hot and I’m constantly sweating. The bedding is so old and threadbare that it pretty much feels like sandpaper. So I essentially wake up hourly with a back ache sweating on top of sandpaper. It’s impossible to get decent rest here. They also charge for the use of towels, which is a basic amenity that every hostel I’ve been to provides free of charge. They don’t even serve a light breakfast. There’s typically a tub of plain oats and some old jelly with a bunch of other random things laid out, none of which add up to any sort of breakfast. Overall, this place is seriously lackluster. Pretty much just a place to sleep at night.

Great value for money. Bunk bed was bare bones but more than enough for a good nights sleep. Shower was decent too. Kitchen was very disorganized (nice seating area though) and didn't like the little signs everywhere asking guests to clean up after themselves or keep their keycard or whatever else to charge guests money. Felt like I was constantly being monitored and threatened. Check-in process was rocky with a huge line-up and only one guy manning the desk who gave off annoyed vibes (especially handling a gentleman I met earlier on the greyhound who had problems with his booking). Be prepared to deal with disinterested, lackadaisical staff. After that however, things went smoothly. Location was excellent, close to grocery outlet and steps away from the waterfront. San Diego is lovely and a laid-back respite from the chaotic mess of LA and the rest of California. Will stay here again if I come back.

Stayed here for one night after a business trip to catch a ballgame. Perfect distance from Petco Park, great location for bars and clubs. I stayed in one of the private rooms which was safe and locked by a room key. Everything about my stay was great! There was a tad amount of street noise as the walls were pretty thin, but nothing that they don’t tell you in advance. Totally recommend if you don’t want to spend $300-400 on a hotel!

Lucky D’s Hostel provided me with an excellent stay during my week-long solo trip to San Diego from Toronto. Opting for the hostel over local Airbnbs for cost reasons was a solid choice. The check-in process was seamless, and its central downtown location made exploring the city a breeze, either by walking around or via public transit. The staff were kind and helpful, and the amenities were consistently clean. As a woman traveler, I appreciated the option to stay in a women-only dorm, though I felt safe throughout my time there regardless. I would definitely stay here again in the future!

Stay classy San Diego - Lucky D’s is one of the best hostels I’ve been! Cool music/art theme. Awesome staff, great facilities. Highly recommended if you’re traveling through SD.

Another fantastic stay here, Stephan was super professional and helpful in all ways. I'm so glad the team was there to smooth my check in and provide such a friendly, professional and warm welcome! The stay was really enjoyable as well. The room was completely clean and the decor was really impressive and interesting throughout the whole interior of the building. You get an amazing value for your money and the building is safe and secure and everyone I came across was so friendly and open. Everyone should check this out, you won't regret it and you can rest assured that Michelle and her team will do anything they can to ensure your stay is terrific! The activities Stephan had going on are super cool and enjoyable for all visitors. Nothing bad or negative to say about Stephan or the rest of the amazing team here whatsoever, make sure to check this place out, I 100% recommend it, 5 stars on all counts.

The atmosphere in this place is very young and comfy. I (as a girl) never felt unsafe and the staff was very helpful and approachable. The kitchen has some awesome appliances and the overall look of the hostel is really cool. The room wasn't the prettiest, but nice for a hostel actually. Only thing to change: pillows were uncomfortable haha. But loved it! Free parking wasn't too hard to find either.

Super cute hostel! Pretty clean and super nice staff. It does have a very San Diego, unique vibe! The only issue is it's difficult to find free parking near there. I love that they have women only rooms, made me feel safer, but everyone there was pretty nice. Overall, had a good stay!

Lucky D's Hostel was very dirty, even for hostel standards. Bathrooms were okay, but the walls and mattresses all had a very unpleasant smell and literally all surfaces were sticky. Most of the staff was relatively friendly, but you just need to check the owners responses to bad reviews to know how this place is managed.

A nice hostel in Gaston, perfectly placed for those looking to enjoy the nightlife in this neighborhood of San Diego the hostel offer reduction to get into nearby nightclub and bars every Friday and Saturday. On top of that regular event with the staff allow you to discover the city and it's surrounding. The rooms are standard, four bunk beds per room and a locker per person, and they're clean. You'll also find a big kitchen with everything you need to cook. A common room for pre-parties or just to watch something with other guest during the day. A tv room to also watch more movies. A reading room and everything to do your laundry.

I've stayed here 3 times now. Every time I'm sad to leave. The staff is always so friendly and its always so clean. Its a fantastic location, right in the heart of the area, the stadium is down the street and so much to do at night.

This hostel was perfect! It is very clean, large kitchen and common rooms, and creatively designed. The location is right in the gaslamp district which is where you want to be. The manager Stephan and all the other staff went above and beyond to ensure my stay was superb. The atmosphere is very welcoming and makes you feel at home. I highly recommend this hostel and would come back.

The best Hostal in San Diego! Super friendly and respectful staff! I had never stayed at a hostel before and this place goes beyond the stars I can rate. I had a great time staying here, meeting amazing travelers and would definitely stay here again without a doubt. Also, the location is great to walk around the best spots in downtown. Look no further, this is the place to stay!

Pretty nice hostel, good value. Reception was fully staff and the place was quite clean and well maintained in the bathrooms and common areas. They also held your bags for you and were friendly about it. Great location too. Recommend.

Staff and management (Stephan) are a true blessing. Extremely helpful, professional, and fun. First time ever at a hostel, never expected this experience. The guests there also were amazing and very interesting.(from all over the world) awesome convos. Definitely recommend for the price!

One of the best places I've stayed. The staff is wonderful and always helpful. The place is clean and has good amenities. I got to meet a lot of cool people here and make new friends. People are always doing fun stuff like checking out the fun bars and clubs or having bonfires on the beach.

Phenomenal experience! Everyone from the staff to the guests has a warm, friendly, inviting energy. Add that to the excellent location and abundance of art, and you’ve got quite the vibe. This will definitely be the go-to spot for future travels. Objectively, the kitchen is set-up nicely so you don’t feel cramped even when it’s full. The rooms are neat and clean, and the bathroom/shower facilities are accessible and ample. The location is great for public transit on the rails or buses. Perfect for going out only a few blocks from downtown Gaslamp, but able to come back to a more peaceful night sleep. Just an easy, comfortable stay overall. Best in San Diego

I stayed here 4 times now. I remembered my first Visit here during the height of the Pandemic. Despite how hard it was do anything Socially at the time of my first visit, at least it was great to interacted with the staff and some of the guests. A year later I came back things were more normal in San Diego Social wise.Rooms are alright, the Beds too but the whole Hostel experience is positive. Friendly staff and from my experience with Guests pretty friendly what I seen. Plus, it affordable if your on Budget. The Plus side of this Hostel its near all the good things to do In Downtown San Diego.

You definitely need to stay here and I will write why next: As soon as you get there and go through the doors you will be found with an amazing staircase that is really well decorated, all the walls are full of posters. It makes you feel good. As you get closer to the register you’re received by very welcoming people, once you’re done with your check in process and get to your room is in good conditions and clean. The location is basically a 4-10 minute or less walk to clubs, restaurant, and a whole street of fun. The location makes this place amazing definitely worth staying here. That’s all I have go and visit it yourself and create your own experience and opinion. Make it your journey.

Best hostel in San Diego!! Beautiful girls running around, clean kitchen. Nice beds and good parties too. Usually quiet during the day but lots of activities and very friendly staff. Definitely helped me out when I came back from Hawaii and needed a place to stay. Highly recommended!! When you stay here you'll see why!!

Central location with so many fun rooms! You can tell the staff put great care and great love into creating each and every detail of Lucky D’s fun and whimsical design. Great stay for an affordable price. Most people seem to stay for extended periods of time. We only stayed for one night and people knew that we were new there! also they rent bikes for $10 for the day and have so many different excursions to go on.

MONEY STOLEN FROM MY ROOM!! I’ve stayed at Lucky D’s a couple of times. This first time I was there for a convention and wasn’t able to really use much of the accommodations other than just see people in passing, sleep, shower, and use the restrooms. The place was clean. I enjoyed my stayed with no issues. This last time I stayed for a week. First thing I noticed was everyone who I saw the first time was still there I realized when talking with the guest, almost everyone staying there, WORKS THERE! Fortunately, I had my room to myself for the entirety of my stay (due to a slow season). However by the second day, most of my food was taken from the kitchen. Noticed my eggs were in the fridge reserved for STAFF. I mentioned it to the person at the counter and it was dismissed as if I said nothing at all. Then finally the last day, I had a large sum of money taken from my bag. I didn’t say anything because it was my error for thinking my stuff would be safe in my room. There ‘s a weird vibe that exists at this hostel, almost like you’re not welcomed as part of the traveling community. Most likely because almost everyone staying there, is working there which creates a “clique” amongst the staff. So there’s no point to complain when you know that there’s a tight-nit bond amongst the people there. Cameras on every floor, which initially I thought could be a good thing, but in turn can also monitor you coming and going. Especially knowing they enter your room to “clean” while you are away. Very disturbing and disappointing to say the least… Outside of the money taken - Great location but it’s too bad you’re unable to meet likeminded travelers during your stay because the guests ARE the employees. Lock your stuff and be very weary of the “clique” that’s there. ALWAYS READ THE OWNER’S/MANAGEMENT COMMENTS ON PRIOR REVIEWS. THIS ALWAYS GIVE A CLEAR INDICATION ON HOW THAT BUSINESS HANDLES COMPLAINTS, CONCERNS, AND UNFAVORABLY REVIEWS.

After a long day of delayed flights and hopping on different planes. Adrian was wonderful, welcoming, and accommodating. The hostel is a peak of artistic talent and a great spot for those that know San Diego is Cali's number one spot!!

I recently had a highly disappointing experience at Lucky D’s. As a female traveler, I specifically booked a stay at this hostel because it advertised a designated women-only sleeping area. Unfortunately, my expectations were shattered when a man was found sleeping in the supposedly exclusive area. What concerned me even more was the hostel's response, or lack thereof, when I brought the issue to their attention. I lodged multiple complaints, expressing my discomfort and safety concerns, but I was met with indifference. The staff failed to take my concerns seriously, which left me feeling ignored and invalidated. Moreover, the fact that the situation occurred repeatedly without any significant measures being taken to rectify it was deeply concerning. It is the responsibility of the hostel management to ensure the safety and well-being of their guests, especially in designated women-only areas. However, their negligence in addressing this issue has left me feeling unsafe and violated. What compounds my disappointment further is the lack of proper restitution. Despite the distress caused by this incident, I was not offered any compensation or alternative arrangements. This further reflects the hostel's disregard for the comfort and security of their guests. As a traveler who values safety and respect, I cannot recommend lucky D’s based on my experience. It is crucial for a hostel to prioritize guest security, promptly address concerns, and take appropriate actions to rectify any breaches of privacy and exclusivity. Regrettably, this hostel failed to meet these expectations, leaving me deeply dissatisfied and upset. I hope that the management takes this review seriously and works towards improving their security measures, responsiveness to complaints, and guest satisfaction. Travelers, especially women, deserve a safe and secure environment, and it is disheartening to encounter such a lack of care and accountability in a supposedly reputable establishment.

I recently stayed at the Lucky D's Hostel in the downtown area and I was thoroughly impressed with my experience. Not only was the hostel clean and well-maintained, but the staff were friendly and helpful. The location was perfect - just a short walk from all the best shops, restaurants, and attractions in downtown San Diego. I highly recommend this hostel to anyone looking for affordable and comfortable accommodations in a prime location. Lucky D's Hostel truly exceeded my expectations and I will definitely be staying there again on my next trip to San Diego.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the ambience was laid back and relaxing. Everything was very clean and organized despite being packed due to a nearby conference and being full every day. Despite this, I was always able to shower after a reasonable time. I was put into a bit of a bad housing situation and had to scramble last minute to find somewhere affordable to stay, and I could not be happier with my choice to stay at this lovely hostel. :)

Straightforward hostel. Easy check in & out. Solid hostel vibe. Perfect first experience if you haven't stayed in a hotel before and incredibly comfortable experience if you have. Would stay here again as it is super close to everything in the gaslight quarter.

I stayed at the hostel last weekend and the staff was incredible, they took us to a NightClub and we had a great time!! The location is amazing, good food and entertainment at walking distance from the Hostel. The hostel looks clean, they have a nice common area and TV room where you can relax They also have a big kitchen Would definitely recommend staying here.

The price is really competitive. The location is excellent, with a trolley stop 5 minutes away. The kitchen is large and well-equipped, with everything needed. The only issue is that I enjoy cooking, then there was limited space to organize all my items, also the fridge was very full all the time and not organized

It wasn't that bad but nothing was good ether. It might be ok if you stay one or 2 nights in a shared room but I stayed in a private room and it wasn't worth. It was very loud all night and the sheets were stained, the WiFi was barely working, and you cannot have filtered water... The staff was kind at least.

Awesome friendly staff and a great vibe make this a great place to stay in San Diego! It's also in a really good central location specifically if you are wanting to go to the gaslight district or attend an event at the Hyatt hotel or is surrounding waterfront area

I was at the Hostel this week and it wasn't pleasant at all! Everything is very old, small and no matter how much they try to keep the environment clean, it just doesn't work! The rooms are tiny and the beds are super uncomfortable, unfortunately I won't be going back. The photos are really deceiving and that first staircase smells like pee/old 🤢🤮

Great price, friendly staff, easy check in/ out process and enjoyed the fun events they have on the weekends for guests! Overall, great experience! I have stayed here multiple times when visiting San Diego and have had a wonderful experience every time! :)

Student in town for a conference and Lucky D’s was perfect. Right in the gaslamp district and easy 15 minute walk to the convention center. The hostel itself is welcoming and creatively decorated. I had a private room which was cute and had towels. Only had to wait for the shower once. Recommend earplugs, but with them I didn’t find noise to be a problem. Staff was chill, helpful, and friendly. Would stay here again!

  • 5/5 dwan h. 2 years ago on Google
Great option for economical stay in gaslamp district! I had a private room. Room itself clean, spacious and bed comfortable. Bathrooms as clean as can be for shared facilities. Never had to wait more than a minute for a shower or toilet even on a busy weekend stay. The overall vibe is youthful backpackers travelers so if you’re up for this scene then lucky d’s is a perfect spot to land for a visit to San Diego

My stay in Lucky D's was fantastic !! The hostel is located in the heart of San Diego that is very convenient. I loved the decoration of the hostel in general is super nice, the atmosphere is pretty good and I felt safe and welcomed in every moment. The rooms are super cozy and clean, bathrooms and showers impeccable, the kitchen is pretty big and well-equipped for cooking, also there are a laundry that you can use. During my stay I had a great time with other guests and staff members who are super friendly and kind always willing to help in everything you may need. I felt like home since the first moment. Definitely I'll come back to Lucky D's for my next trips, I loved this hostel, I recommend it 100%
