I’ve stayed in hostels in roughly 60 countries and this place is up there with the best of them. I checked in quite late and the guy working at reception was super friendly and helpful. The common areas are very well thought out, comfortable and have plentiful seating. Bathrooms were very clean, it’s obvious that they have good staff who pay attention to hygiene. I had no trouble sleeping in the dorm; there was a fan that cooled the room sufficiently and provided a nice amount of white noise. All the guests were polite and respectful. The free breakfast was solid. Literally the only downside is some sketchy vagrants hang around outside but that’s not the hostel’s fault and it’s a problem in every west coast city. 10/10 I’d stay here again.

A great place to stay in San Diego if you’re traveling on a budget. The staff are super. Everything is clean and orderly with lots if good systems in place. For the most part, the other guests were cool. The common area was great for laptop work during the day. The kitchen was well stocked and clean. My one gripe was the dorm mattresses were not very comfy. I ended up springing for a private room which was super comfortable and a good deal considering other options in the area.

As a first time hostel goer, I was leery but the price, availability, and location was calling my name. I did not have to be concerned. This place was amazing! Everyone was very welcoming and the environment was just lovely. What a great vibe for any adult age. There's continental breakfast and places to store any food you'd like to cook. The kitchen and all facilities were very clean. Lounging areas are cozy and available for both smoking or non smoking and goodies like surfboards available for use. I stayed in a 6 bunk all female room. I loved the beds because they are semi private with outlets to plug in. We were able to sleep very well and it was a great place to chill out during the day if needed. I love the vibe of this community as well. Lots of vendors nearby and great eats! We felt very safe at all times. Unfortunately my daughter had a medical emergency one morning due to severe dehydration (DRINK EXTRA WATER AT THE BEACH) and 911 needed to be called. The front desk staff was very responsive, called 911 and provided communication at every step. Thankfully she is okay and, from my perspective, everything was handled with great care and attention to cause the least disruption to any other guests. I really regret that this happened and hopefully we will be welcome back. Additionally, we ended up leaving a day early and as it was less than 24 hours notice did not ask for refund. They did not have to refund anything but, without me asking, I see from my bank that they have. Amazing place. I highly recommend. These are quality people and and a fantastic vacation spot.

I stayed here a while back, and the hostel itself was pretty comfortable and it was near the beach. The staff members were always pretty good to me. However, the social atmosphere at this location didn't particularly impress me and I thought many of the people that stayed here had toxic traits and I really didn't consider the vast majority of them to be very welcoming and friendly. I've been to different hostels in the US, and I could usually find guests I'd vibe with very well, but this place just didn't really seem to work well for me. You may have a different experience.

This was my first experience at a hostel. It was so cool. The employees were helpful and the atmosphere was so laid back. Everyone was kind to each other and many people shared their food in the kitchen. What a cool way to travel with my oldest 2 boys. They will never forget the experience. And the location cannot be beat!

Fantastic memories at this place. Great location and chill lounge. So colourful and kept clean! It is a secure place to stay, as reception staff are well trained and there is a code for entry. They ran walking tours to Tijuana when I was there in 2019, not sure if they still do. Awesome location for a hostel. In walking distance to famous Hodad's, the beach, ace Mexican food, grocers directly across, restaurants and bars all along street too. Great street for skating. Buses nearby to get around SD. Top notch place.

I can’t say enough about my experiences at this hostel. 10/10 across the board. Amazing clean and bright rooms, bathrooms, free breakfast, community spaces, friendly atmosphere, activities, and location couldn’t be more perfect. Staying at this hostel helped me find my new future home-ocean beach 🧡

An astounding hostel. Clean, quiet, nice people, incredibly helpful staff. Great common area, very well located on ocean beach with reasonably regular buses into town. I stayed three nights at the start of my trip, and it was so good I stayed three more nights at the end. Thoroughly recommended!

This is a great place with an amazing location. I think the cleaning was correct , the room were okay , just very simple , perhaps curtain around the bed could had been better though. The common area are great and very enjoyable ! There is everything you need TV yoga mat , beach towels , surf and body board. Although the main issue were the guests education , i had 3 very loud roommate from 7 am in the morning to 9.15 am that did not seem to notice that some of us were sleeping . Anyhow if they wanted to talk there is plenty of space in the common area to do so. The night before some of the guests were rude and bully others. I just think a little bit of education about co-living could be introduce to the guests and avoid this heavy atmosphere in the hostel . Thanks for the stay 🌞🌞🌞

Terrible business experience! Came to Ocean Beach looking at properties for my company The Rent Place LLc. and had to leave a bit early for Mexico because I needed updated passport and special documents to look at a home in Ensenada for my business. I left my bags stored at hostel not correctly but assumed it would be no big deal. When my check out date came I was unable to call due to lacking service. I got back about a week later, and spoke with a gentleman at the front desk who let me access my bag verify everything was there move things around and change clothes, left for breakfast. Upon returning, the girl at the front desk, presumably first shift, let me know my leaving early and leaving bags was a huge risk, and I will be trespassed from hostel and need to leave now. I had a busy day and stored my bags somewhere where my work laptop and clothes ended up missing or stolen. It's not that I care that I can't ever stay here again I just would never want anyone to go through that.

I have to leave a review of this place! I booked this vacation because I needed a getaway from my day to day to stop and reflect on what to do next with my life. Little did I know, this would be one of the best vacations where I would make memories that would last a lifetime, meet people from all walks of life, and as crazy as it sounds, get the chance to bond with a few people that I think will be lifelong friends. I don't know if it was the weather, the vibe, the ocean, or something else, but there truly is something special about this place. If you come here with an open mind, especially if you're feeling a little lost and need some direction or inspiration in life, I cannot recommend this place enough. 5/5 stars!!!

Best hostel I have been so far! Spacious rooms and bathrooms, everything really well cleaned, comfy mattresses and beds not too squeaky. Big common areas where you can easily socialise but even stay on your own if you prefer. Amazing breakfast with so many options of tea and coffee. Staff really helpful (I had a snoring issue my first night and they changed my room straight away). Be aware they have two private double rooms that aren t online, if you want something like that contact the hostel directly!

Hey people I am from Istanbul and It's been a little over a year since I stayed here. Definitely perfect place to stay!! I stayed a full week in this beautiful hostel. I had a chance to use every utility in the spot. I took pictures and I preferred to use the ones without people and their faces. The hostel has back garden and front sitting area. There are 3-4 toilets which is more than enough for their capacity. There is a TV lounge which people watch movies or sport events. The kitchen is full of equipment if you wanna cook. There are a couple of full time cleaning personnel who made my stayed even better. Apart from regular room and check-out cleaning they work inside and outside during the day. It is very chill and peaceful in the back garden with people. I really enjoyed each night that I spent over there. Restaurants, bars, cafes and markets are all around the hostel, just pick which one you want. There was a reggae event in a bar which we all went from hostel. I also enjoyed being with the local band and community. Everything was beautiful in Samesun Ocean Beach!! Since the day I left this hostel I am dreaming about coming back!

This was my second Samesun stay, first in San Diego, and my favorite so far. I love the fun, whimsical design of it - It’s super clean and the check-in and out process was quick and seamless. Everyone at the front desk was extremely friendly and helpful, and I had no issues with loud noises while sleeping despite the busy location. The location of this hostel is perfect, just a block or two from the beach and surrounded by lots of restaurants and shops. There are also two buses nearby that take you into downtown so that was also very convenient. I loved San Diego and will definitely stay here again during my next visit!

At first I was super overwhelmed arriving in ocean beach. I had been camping for a month and hadn’t been in a city in what felt like forever. I was only going to spend 2 nights and ended up adding on another because I enjoyed it so much. The staff was terrific, especially Mark! He’s an amazing addition to the staff, it really felt like being with family. Olivia (I think is her name!) was also extremely friendly and helpful with an issue I had. I had to park a couple blocks away but this turned out to be fine and I used my skateboard to get around the area easily. I wish I stayed a few extra nights! Sometimes people stay up late in the patio area, but the staff makes a point to keep the volume down during quiet hours. This is a great spot to stay in OB and I can’t wait to return. The food in the area is delicious, the beach is beautiful, the locals, and the people staying at the hostel were so friendly. I’ll be back! :)

It would be great to give high rating. I would prefer that. Samesun really values their policies. I tried addressing being given a non written biased I felt discriminatory unique policy that I found myself uncomfortable, and would not have booked here or stayed here if known, and not made until after staying at the hostel. You should make clear what that policy is, so we can make appropriate decisions to stay or not. We should make sure foreign travelers are comfortable from whatever beliefs they come from. Great!

THE best place to stay, chill and meet diverse people from everywhere. Rooms are clean. Service and common areas great with a good breakfast. And the location is perfect; a walk away from the beach, Sunset Cliff. And the Wednesday Farmer's market is fantastic. I have no negative comments. Just great memories. Going back for sure!

If ever I would mention OB hostel, this is where magic start. Lovely location, hostel located on Newport Ave, the whole street has most stuff you’ll need. The hostel itself is a very pretty petite spiritual place, front porch is the best place doing people’s watching, or come to the back patio, sunny everyday from sunrise till sunset. Rooms are so cute, mostly are bunk-beds with few private rooms with en-suite. Very earthy and stylish decor, you’ll feel the unique atmosphere since you see this house🔮 Very well cleaned!!!! From rooms to patios, from kitchen to TV room, stuff making a very good effort🙏🏼 Stuff are very helpful and friendly, everyone has an ALOHA vibe🤙🏼 Love OB hostel, love the group, love the vibe!!!!!!

This was my first experience at a hostel. The environment inside was pretty laid back! Everyone were very friendly and welcoming, sharing their part of stories! Good place to meet people from all over the world! Can’t forget the location, one of the happening place with good food and of course the beach! Overall, the rooms and restrooms were comfortable and clean!

It was our first time in San Diego and our first time staying in a hostel. Everyone was so nice and the environment was super chill and laid back. The hostel was very clean and the staff was more than accommodating. We made some genuine friendships with the people there, and they treated us more like family than guests. Joey Gatz and Justin Davis showed us some unbelievable places, and even drove us to the airport on our way home back to Colorado. If you want the ultimate Ocean Beach experience, I recommend staying at Samesun. We didn't want to leave, but we will definitely be back!

Just an all around good vibe. They offer a light breakfast with coffee, fruits and grains. They have one of those cool water bottle stations. Full kitchen. Space for personal food items. Cool activities throughout the day. The hostel sits in the hub so you're in walking distance to everything. Food. Bars. Shopping. The beach. Friendly staff that care about the community. Even have a 420 friendly smoking area where you can sit and look up at the stars. If you come in the winter dress warm. The breeze off the water can bite a bit because you will be that close! All in all, it's been a lovely time.

Just did my first solo traveling trip and decided to stay at a hostel for the first time. Read a lot of reviews and heard by word of mouth but this place was a great fit for me. I met a lot of really great friends downstairs at night and there was plenty of socialization opportunities amongst the hostel. My bedroom was very clean and lockers were provided for personal belongings. The staff reiterated in many ways that if any other guest was making me uncomfortable I could go to them and they would handle the situation but I did not run into this situation. I rented a surfboard for the day and was able to wash everything off after at the hospital and had an amazing experience here and was able to walk my surfboard down to the water very easily. Will be staying here again very soon!

Amazing, one of the best Hostels I've stayed at! I Loved the vibes of the place everyone Staff and the guests were extremely friendly. The Staff gave a great recommendation for Tacos down the road (it was Tuesday night and they were right it was the best). They also seem to lure a lot of solo travelers like me because there was 4 of us and I loved shooting the breeze with them in the patio in the morning. I adore Hostels with 24hr Reception it makes settling in a breeze and gives you confidence to get out and enjoy yourself.

Great location, really cool property. Staff were very helpful and allowed me to check in early. Common areas were very clean and modern and bright with lots of character. It’s right on the beach with a lot of nightlife and food nearby so I didn’t have to pay to get around which was nice. I stayed in a 4 bed dorm and met some nice people. I will probably stay again if I end up back in SD. Felt completely comfortable the whole time as someone who often does not enjoy sharing spaces with others.

A fantastic hostel! Incredible staff, great people, very clean, and great services. They serve coffee and some food in the morning, offer boards and beach toys for rental, and have some very nice, comfortable common spaces. The rooms are very clean, beds are very comfortable, and are set up nicely to give you a private, cozy space even though you are in a room with 1-5 other people! This was my first time staying at a hostel and it was truly an excellent experience.

This place is by far the best hostel in California. The colors and hippie front make it beautiful. The rooms are well maintained. The people in San Diego are just great and while I was staying there we had a nice Thanksgiving party!

The property is located next to the ocean beach. You can rent surfboard and surfing gears from the hostel at reasonable price. The staff is very courteous and polite. The check in was super easy. You can hangout in the common area even after checkout. You get free breakfast even at that affordable price.

This place was great. I had never stayed in a hostel before so I was kinda hesitant on it. Everyone was so friendly and it was nice and clean, and the staff was very nice and accommodating. I did kinda cheat and get a private room so I didn’t get the entire hostel experience, but I know for sure I will be staying here again on my next trips to San Diego! Very close to the beach too! The only thing that might be a downside, is this place is pretty noisy with jet noise being very close to the airport and right under the flight path. But that can’t be helped! I would stay here again and again!

Beautiful hostel, well maintained, cleaned well. Staff was fabulous. The breakfast surpassed my expectations, they were delicious with a great selection of tea. Beds weren't the greatest, but doable for a short time. Photos are quite accurate, so you know exactly what you're getting here!

For the first time living in a hostel, it’s not a bad experience for me at all. I have stayed in many Airbnbs and this place is one of the cleanest I have stayed. Clean bedsheets, floor, bathrooms, towels and full of hygiene products you need except toothbrush. My room is all female and they are very quiet. Plus they have boogie board and surf board rental for a cheap price. Just ask the front desk staff. Parking: I need to walk two blocks but no big problem. Overall, great value and beyond my expectation!

  • 5/5 Adam L. 2 years ago on Google
A very unique experience. I stayed last weekend and I wish I could have stayed longer! The hostel is clean and quiet for the most part. They have gender-neutral bathrooms with showers at the end of each hall in case you do not want to use the communal bathrooms/showers. Parking is a few blocks away so keep that in mind if you have a car.

This hostel is absolutely amazing! The staff are extremely professional, friendly, & helpful. The esthetic is great, the rooms & bathrooms are cleaned regularly. The location is perfect! It's extremely close to the beach and all of the restaurants & bars. Prices are great as well. Definitely recommend staying here, I'll for sure be staying here the next time I'm in San Diego!

Clean, safe, great location. I was apprehensive to stay in a hostel but I had a great stay. Super friendly staff and an awesome location. It could get a little noisy at night, so it might not be a great place if you are sensitive to noise when sleeping but they provide earplugs and I personally liked the ambiance. I hope to go back one day.

The best run hostel I've ever been in. Super cool vibes. Clean, comfortable, and everything is 'correct': plenty of space, outlets, bathrooms and showers. Staff are exceptional. Guests have all been awesome. If you're visiting Ocean Beach you can't get better than this hostel for a place to be 🙂

This places to awesome. I stayed in a private room and my experiences was wonderful. There is a positive vibe here. People are nice and helpful. You don't feel lonely as a solo traveller. Everything is thoughtfully designed here so that you get what you need. Location is best close to beach, restaurants and grocery. Clean facilities. Can't think of any cons. I wish we have more hostels like this.

Stayed here a couple nights during a quick weekend trip. This hostel is great. The location is perfect and it's right next to the beach. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Olivia helped answer all of my questions and gave me some good advice on where to go. Everyone I met staying at the hostel was friendly and considerate.

Located on the beach in a little town with lots of character - this hostel offers especially comfortable beds with private bathrooms. It is big, spacious, and clean. Wednesday nights you can walk out your front door and enjoy the farmers market which has great food and local products. Newport Ave (the street on which is located) has everything in proximity from bars, to restaurants and grocery stores. The staff is very friendly and service oriented. Great spot to surf as well.

One of the nicest hostels I have ever stayed in. Very well maintained facility for the rates, with key cards that makes me feel safe. What impressed me the most, though, is the friendly vibe: people from all over the world hanging out, watching movie together when the bad weather comes, group trips to explore the city… I highly recommend.

Great vibes at Samesun Ocean Beach Hostel. Location near beaches and a cool old main street with lots of shops. The hostel was very clean and staff was super welcoming and friendly. Complimentary tea, coffee, a bowl of fruit and granola bars in addition to a couple shelves of free food left behind by other guests. Lots of details went into the construction of the hostel making it a cool, comfortable, and fun place to stay.

I loved the place. The colors, the decoration, the flair, the open area. Lots of nice easy, going guests. Very social, still quiet enough. I had a room for myself with two bunk beds. The mattresses were good enough, The entire place is as clean as a hostel gets. There are stoves, a little microwave, and plenty of fridges. The rooms felt safe with the key cards. The area around Ocean beach has its own flair, with the permanent smell of weed in the air. Relaxed people around. Surfers on the beach, skateboards on the streets. It is far from a high-end area but not shabby. Lots of restaurants, pubs, and some stores are very close by. Easy to walk around. One night there was a very nice market with lots of street food just in front of the hostel.

I adored, no, I loved staying here. The staff was friendly and accommodating, the people staying here were magical, and the whole vibes of the place and town was beautiful. If you are looking for a good place to stay where you can be by yourself, or be as social as you want, this is the place for you. I'll forever be grateful for the experience here, and I hope to be back sometime in the near future. If you're questioning whether it's worth it to stay here, it definitely is. You will feel safe and welcomed here. Plus, the free coffee/pancakes/waffles in the morning are a big plus :)

I HAD TO SO MUCH FUN IN OCEAN BEACH! I stayed at Samesun for 4 night. They had 24/7 reception which was great for security and late flight times! The location is right on the beach , giving a chiller Venice beach vibe. The workers make sure the place stayed clean, I see them cleaning every morning ! The workers had great hiking and food recommendations. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was overall environment. There were some young groups who were just like me looking to explore new places , but there is also a wide range of people who are staying long term and are not permanently housed outside the hostel. Some of these individuals made it really hard to relax inside the hostel, I made sure to keep busy and stayed exploring. They made me feel super uncomfortable when I tried to relax around the hostel. At night it would get super rowdy within the hostel , i would hear a lot of banging. There was an obvious divide in guests where most of the people I met there were just as uncomfortable as me with the guests that were staying long term and even decided to leave early because you could not relax within the hostel it’s self. These guests are not easy to talk to, and if u did have a conversation it would go south very quickly. I was lucky to meet two amazing people , but I’m not sure Samesun is the environment I was looking for. There was great potential for the environment to be welcoming and friendly , it was already done by the workers and the LGBTQ+ community inclusion. But the demographic of guest was not at all as expected in the social media posts and it was obvious they stay there for long amounts of time. I hoped it would be a place for young travelers as myself like advertised but it seemed like a lot of California (not San Diego local) local folks rather then outside travelers. Thank you for my stay either way!

Great location, clean facilities, friendly/helpful staff - I loved staying here! The shared rooms are itty bitty (hard for more than 1 person to be out of their beds at once) but that is pretty standard for hostels.
