5 stars bc the bed is very comfortable, the decor is quite chic, and Sonder customer service is excellent. - 3 stars because of the particular space: We stayed in one of the king rooms and had a very miserable experience. For the following reasons we will never stay at a Sonder in San Diego, CA ever again: 1 - First, the street noise is ridiculously loud - we could hardly sleep it was so amplified. Every. Single. Car. or. Passerby. They even have ear plugs in the lobby (almost as if they were fully aware it was an issue… why not improve sound insulation?), but they weren’t enough. We’ve stayed in NYC and it wasn’t this loud. This was an extreme issue that ruined our vacation. Note: We tried to switch rooms but there were no other Sonder rooms available in SD. Customer service offered Sonder “credits” but only if we checked out early (and it’s impossible to find a last minute stay in SD unless you want to spend a fortune). 2 - Second, the rooms are very bright. There are no curtains to filter the street light or car lights or sunlight. Just wooden shades with gaps, it’s bright at night. 3 - Third, there is no storage. One rack and a few hangers, but no shelves or drawers or tabletops. 4 - Fourth, the bathroom door is a barn door and doesn’t close all the way - gaping about 5 or 6 inches reducing privacy. 5 - Fifth, the room is tiny and the pics are deceiving. 6 - Lastly, we could hear all noise from adjacent rooms and smell all their smells (including cigarettes and weed). This is a 2 star hotel renovated to be a 4 star - but don’t be tricked, it’s still a 2 star hotel!

The rooms are ridiculously small. Two persons with a suitcase makes it impossible to move around. By European standards it’s a room and bathroom of 9m2 total. Someone has to sleep in the corner with no charging options. The bathroom door is a moving mirror, which doesn’t even close. Booked it through booking.com, but still needed to download the app, upload my id and another thousand steps, which ended up being a huge time consuming nonsense. Final drop in the bucket is that the front door code stopped working during our stay. The bed is more of futon than a bed, so I’m very confused about fellow travellers who have found it comfortable. The only good thing is the shower.

This is the loudest room I’ve ever had to sleep in. Used the white noise machine and ear plugs provided - and still was woken up many times throughout the night. Everything from cars, people talking outside, guests coming and going inside - really anything at all. Blinds are inadequate as well, so flashing lights come right through. There’s even a street light in the corner that shines directly through. I was drawn to this place because it had a unique look and affordable price. Do not let this fool you - it is cheap and noisy. This is a truly one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had. Customer service is non-existent.

We stayed here for three nights during our trip to SD. The room was a little smaller than we had hoped for and really wouldn’t have been a problem other than there wasn’t room for a Chair to put on your shoes etc. The location is great and is close to Little Italy, the Convention Center, Petco Field etc. Parking is a nuisance, especially if there is a large event going on like the NLDS ;). But the good side is that you just walk everywhere. We walked (20 min) to the ferry that takes you to Coronado Island and over to Seaport Village (25 min). Staff were extremely nice when we ran into them. It was a little noisy after the Padres won the Dodgers, but hey, that’s expected.

There is no parking…. I repeat, NO PARKING… you have to download a the spot hero app and a lot of places close by do not let you come and go as you please. The room does not have a chair or any place other than the bed to sit down. Actually the rooms don’t have space for much. My suitcase needed to be closed and tucked away every time I had to go in there because there is no place for more than one suitcase to sit. There is also no extra table but the small end tables. I should mention that the bed is quite comfy and it is nice they have the Roku for streaming services but those two good things do not make up for their short comings. I understand I paid $70-99/ night- so maybe it is so cheap because they do not offer these accommodations… just hate that I don’t want to spend any time in the room.

Rooms are nice and fairly modern! Ours was on the small side but was literally the smallest room on the second floor, and since we were using it as a base-camp for exploring, we didn't mind at all. The bathroom was spacious and the rainshower fixture was a good touch. Will echo the noise comments, but it's no different than living in a boisterous apartment complex. The white noise machine helped a lot. Loved the no contact check-in, and the codes for the doors were reliable.

Felt very safe, The rooftop grill and fridge helped save a lot and very pleasant in the evening. Relaxing by the fire pit.Just need a spatula to flip what’s cooking. Close to trolly and busses. Grocery store within walking distance. Some homeless people around but they keep to themselves or give a friendly smile. Staff were helpful. I will stay there again.!

If like to take naps while at your favorite NASCAR event, this is the place for you! If the sound of every slamming door and beep from the room access pads lulls you into a restful slumber, this is the place for you! Otherwise, good luck trying to sleep. When you walk around the neighborhood, it is not as noisy as the rooms in the Baker, which seems to be on the loudest corner in San Diego. Hidden in the description of the place is "Noise-free guestrooms cannot be guaranteed", which is easy to overlook, but don't worry, when you walk into the room, they supply earplugs and a white noise machine, so at least there's that. Additionally, the rooms do not have any closets, dressers, or a fridge, and the nightstand has no drawers, so there's no place to put anything. The bathroom door didn't open all the way because of some random box. Apparently form is more important than function. We did not get a refund for our uninhabitable room, and went somewhere else after 1 night. Massive bait-and-switch, presenting itself as a fancy boutique hotel that is really a dressed up 1-star quality accommodation.

My husband and I stayed at the Baker for a week. We found the Baker to be in a great location, walkable distance to lots of fun things. The grocery store on the next block was also very convenient. The room and facilities were very clean. The hotel aesthetic was so cute. The complimentary coffee and tea and water station was excellent. The bed and linens were very comfortable. The high end toiletries were much appreciated. The common areas of the lobby, main level bathroom and rooftop were also nice features and nice places to sit, and again super clean. The staff kept everything spotless. We read all the reviews before booking and were willing to take a risk as the price point with location was unmatched. We had a room facing the street and felt like while the street was loud as motorcycles, ambulances and vehicles come through, that the noise level was consistent with standard city living and nothing more. We selected the smallest room, again to have the most budget experience, while small, it was perfect for us. Again planning to spend time basically just sleeping there. The bathroom and shower were great, nice space, nice hot water. The ear plugs and sound machine were appreciated for sleep. My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay, and would definitely stay in the future. I think if you’re ok with air bnb, boutique hotel, or hostile type accommodations this would be a perfect experience for you. If you’re looking for a commercial standard hotel room, where you are going to spend lots of time inside the room this probably would not be your best fit.

Very safe, regular city sound, Roof top with gas grill and fridge and gas fire place. Awesome. We spent almost every dinner time there. Staff went beyond helpful. Great folks! Room was real nice. I really like the shampoo and conditioner provided. Grocery store 1 block away reasonable price.has beer and wine. There are homeless people around. Not a worry. No bother.free app for free Uber type rides in downtown.Busses 2.50$. Take you anywhere.. try looking up current events. Because lots going on. San Diego. Takes care of the people.

Honestly was sceptical of this place after seeing all the bad reviews but i was very impressed. The rooms while on the smaller side are beautifully decorated and recently renovated- very beautiful touches and a lot of character. the location is unmatched especially for the price of this place. The woman at the front desk was so helpful and friendly, wish I had gotten her name but she made the whole check in process very easy. All in all as a lovely boutique hotel in the area i was very satisfied, the people who have complained earlier need to know the hotel market and what a cost effective hotel provides. This is worth way more than 2 stars- highly recommend!

Awful. About the only good thing about this former college dorm turned “hotel” is the location, and that’s if you are willing to overlook the 2 blocks of homeless people that have set up tents on the sidewalk. The miserable experience starts with the ridiculous check in that they promote as contactless but is really a way for them to have no staff. Takes at least 20 minutes to complete and requires uploading license and pictures of yourself to get a code. Rooms are tiny with no closets, and smell like Lysol. No desks or outlets to plug electronics and rooms are filthy. This place is an absolute joke, unless you have to stay here and then it’s a nightmare. Don’t believe the positive reviews. They must be shills. No way anyone could have a positive experience here.

Dreadful place. Please read ahead…. We booked to stay here whilst passing through San Diego on our honeymoon (we are English). We were gifted a food and wine tour for Christmas, it’s started at 17:30. We called same day to get a room, someone booked us in there and then, GREAT! Left our bags there, went about our day. Check in isn’t until 4pm. Plenty of time to get in and ready for the long awaited tour. Had the text to say our room was ready, codes etc. Upon arrival, we had no access to the room, the hotel is unmanned. The code didn’t work. Called, they gave us a new code. Got into the room, someone was already staying in the room. So if you stayed in Sonder The Baker on 7/1/23 room 212, the hotel gave us access to enter you room. At this point, customer services told us there are no rooms available. They pretty much turfed us out on the streets. It’s now 17:15. No hotel, refund takes 14 days, nowhere to get changed, washed, store bags etc. tour is in 15 minutes. We missed it. We’ve asked Sonder for a faster refund so we can pay for a new hotel, they wouldn’t help us. We asked for compensation for the upset caused on our honeymoon and to reimburse the lost tour. They told us we were compensated with the refund of OUR MONEY!!!!!!! Absolutely shocking. Terrible place. Terrible customer service. Terrible ethics. Only stay here if you want to lose money, lose accommodation, lose your mind or risk strangers walking into your room x

This place was terrible. Service and cleanliness were fine, but the room had no soundproofing. It was Iike I was sleeping on the highway. The lights from the streetlamps also seemed to blare directly into the room. So it was insanely loud and bright the entire night. I could've gotten better sleep at a Best Western for half the price.

This place is ok. I had an upgraded room, so it was a bit bigger than their normal rooms. Space wasn’t an issue for me. The beds were comfortable, but we found some small blood stains on the sheets, the duvet cover had several large holes in it, but that wasn’t really a problem because the blankets were nice and warm. Another big problem was the street noise. The thin windows make it sound like the crackheads on the street are actually inside your room. Definitely the worst part of the room was the bathroom. The bathroom door slides and leaves a gap which allows you to watch someone on the toilet from other side of the door. The floor tiled with these mini tiles that were super dirty. The bathroom floor and shower were disgusting. The shower has NO DOOR! It’s just open lots of water splashes out which makes the floor even more vile. The shower drain and head were also disgusting.

I see complaints about room size, but our room was exactly as big as advertised. The website tells you the exact size of the room when booking. Bed was comfortable, linens and towels were clean, and overall the hotel had a nice vibe. My only gripe is that although there is a small desk that folds out from the wall, there was no chair to sit at that desk. Odd.

The room was fine. It was the noise that was horrendous. There is absolutely no sound proofing. It was all the loud street noise - cars, people ( on the street not the the other guests) loud blasting music .. non stop. We had booked 4 nights but stayed only 1. We lost our money but really couldn’t stand it. Went to another hotel. We decided our sleep was more important. Also there are shutters but even when closed, it was like daylight in the room. If the owners would buy some blackout curtains and put in double glazing for the windows, this hotel would be fine.

We were staying one night on the way to Cabo. We were told to give Sonder a try. This was the worst experience of my life! It’s in a really unsafe and terrible neighbourhood, I would not like to have been travelling here alone. The room we had -101 was the worst ! It was tiny! No space for anything! The bed took up one third (and it was only a double bed!) There were no cups to even drink water. The bathroom floor and shower was filthy. The bed sheets had horrible stains on them. Worst of all the room literally felt like I was sleeping in the middle of the very busy street! The shutter blinds let all the light and noise in from the street, our room being ground floor had people walking by drinking and laughing all night (It wasn’t a weekend), loud cars, thumping music, ambulances going by and homeless digging around in the trash right outside our window, I could hear them breathing!! The walls are so thin you can hear everything. Stay here at your own risk. If I could score less than one I would.

The great California rip off!! We tried to Cancel and expected to get charged for one night and they charged us for 5. Then they keep sending automated messages “how was your stay” they just keep pouring salt into the wound! The ppl that were nice acting like they would help but could not. Don’t stay here if you have an emergency or plans have to be changed even with a 3 day notice!

The noise outside. Oh my god. Please get sound-proofing. I have had to sleep in sections because of the amount of noise outside. Even with earplugs it isn't enough. Also, please get curtains for these rooms. The streetlights and car lights come in so brightly, it's ridiculous.

I booked through Expedia to find a hotel near my conference. I put in the Address and this is what came up in my price range. I get there and it is downtown San Diego. It is not apparent that the Baker is the hotel you go to I reached out to the concierge service. They told me what to look for and that there is no onsite parking. They sent me the app to find parking. The Baker looks clean and renovated, but the nearest parking is about 1/4 to a 1/2 mile away. I scrambled down the street with my luggage to get to the hotel. Generally no staff on hand. Too many homeless in that area for me to feel completely safe. It was more concentrated right there than where I am normally. I got into the baker by calling the concierge to get door code to enter. I got up to my room and it was smaller than the way the room picture was reflecting. Not even a place for me to work. I got a bad feeling and had a oanic attack. I reached out to the concierge again and even to Expedia. I explained my situation and how unsafe and panicked I was feeling and advised I needed to go somewhere else. Both sounded ile that wouldn't be a problem and I Said that I would gladly pay for the night and even the next day if I had to, but I couldn't stay. Again, I thought I would be refunded for the remainder of the week. Apparently they don't think someone's safety or health issue is important. I am Fighting both Expedia and the Sonder Hotel chain at this point.

The Sonder hotel is a terrible option for business travelers. No one works the desk, and when you call they transfer you to an out of country call desk. If this place was $80-$120 bucks a night I would totally get it. But $300 and not letting anyone check in before 4pm is a bad customer experience. I arrived at 7am this morning and asked for an early check in… they finally said I could check in early at 3pm for an extra $25 which was not work it at that point. I will definitely pay a few extra bucks and go elsewhere.
