Really enjoyed this museum. There’s a lot more than I expected. They have additional exhibitions occasionally and have a surprisingly extensive selection of Art. Anything from East Asian Tomb art or Renaissance and a little Picasso print. It’s a great little museum and well worth a visit if staying in San Diego and visiting Balboa Park. Afterwards you can stroll through the whole park.

A Beautiful Collection of Art and History: The San Diego Museum of Art is a true gem nestled in the heart of the city. Upon stepping inside, you are transported into a world of artistic wonders and historical treasures. The museum boasts a vast collection of paintings, ancient artifacts, and statues that will captivate any art enthusiast or history. The interior of the museum is simply beautiful, with its old-world charm adding to the overall experience. The carefully curated exhibits showcase a diverse range of artistic styles and periods, providing visitors with a comprehensive journey through the world of art and culture. Whether you're drawn to classical paintings, ancient artifacts, or intricate statues, this museum has something to offer for everyone. The attention to detail in the curation of the exhibits is truly commendable, and it's evident that the museum staff have a deep passion for preserving and showcasing these important pieces of history. Visiting the San Diego Museum of Art is not only an educational experience but also a visually stunning one. I highly recommend a visit to anyone looking to immerse themselves in the beauty and significance of art and history.

It's a nice well organized and compact museum. I was able to go through the large majority in about two hours. (Skipped the medieval Christian art gallery.) There is a survey of everything, but none of the jaw dropping size that you find in the Met or major New York galleries. It's designed for the every person so every piece has a descriptive label that provides information about the artist as well as the context of the piece. Current special exhibit includes some pieces around Covid. The sculpture garden is cool, recommend a break at Panama 66 for beer and views of the sculptures.

This museum is small but the experience was great. They have a temporary exposition of impressionism which I really liked. Tickets are 20usd but it's totally worth it, you can aso get a discount if you are a student. And the gift shop it's also pretty cool, with a lot of art books and some other souvenirs.

My absolute favorite museum at Balboa Park. I loved every single art piece and the experience of it all was amazing. I was stunned to see Frida's corset for display, it was absolutely wonderful. Will be back.

Quick Facts: Size: Large (2 floors) Price: $15 for adults Est. Time in Museum: 1.5 - 2 hours Recommended for: Art lovers, History Buffs Best Feature(s): Asian exhibit A must visit for those vacationing in San Diego and long time residents of San Diego. The strength of the museum is definitely the variety of the art on display. This is the largest art museum in San Diego. Art from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Art from different time periods dating from the ancient world, to the Renaissance, to Modern Art. Religious art, Portraits, sculptures, abstract art; whatever art style you are into they have some of it here. The art is organized into separate rooms/sections instead of one large area so that it feels more intimate and quiet when your walking around. Exhibits are changed a few times a year so there is always something new to see. If I had to find something to gripe about, it is that it is a 'traditional' art museum: they don't really have any "interactive" aspects to the displays (e.g. look but don't touch). I've been to other museums where they might have some touch screen displays or video monitors that give some further insight about the piece of art you're looking at or especially the art movement it belongs to. They just have a small plaque for each art piece (some don't have any) and a paragraph at the entrance of each section explaining the time period from which the art belongs. Do you need to have some knowledge of art to enjoy the pieces here? No, but a little more info would help the layman. Overall, a great experiance. If you had time to visit one museum in balboa park, this would be it. A good place to take your family (although very small children might not enjoy much here) or a good place for a date. Very relaxing place to walk and it is never crowded, even on Saturdays.n

Really great building and permanent exhibitions. The architecture is beautiful and the paintings are of wide variety. Huge Pacific Asia exhibit (Korean, Japan, and China). Along with an interesting Iran and India exhibits. Really reccomend the European and American art sections.

Fantastic perm collection. Also saw an impressive Impressionist/pointillism exhibition. Steep at $25 but worth it. Fabulous Asian art collection particularly their collection of bodhisattvas. Security guards a little too prominent.

A friend took me to the annual Art Alive weekend event and my first visit to this museum. We absolutely loved the ikebana interpretations of the pieces! I was also impressed with the permanent collections in general. It’s a smaller museum than what I grew up visiting in New York, but the pieces are beautifully curated and displayed. We are now great fans of the TERRA Fernando Casasempere installation as well. We will visit again.

Accessibility: unfortunately there is no close parking for this museum or really anything in Balboa Park. Bring your own wheelchair if you need assistance getting around far distances because that's everything here. Inside this museum, however, they do have a ramp to get up to the museum, and an elevator inside to go to the different levels of the museum. The museum has air conditioning in the summer time. Experience: beautiful museum inside and out. They have some art collections that stay forever and some that just come here temporarily for a month or so. The prices are great for getting in, and you can buy tickets at the door or online. The art is beautiful and the employees are helpful.

My wife and I loved our visit to the museum. It only takes an hour or two to walk the entirety of the art museum. Depending on the current exhibits it can be a great or at least a good experience for most. A great place to go for quiet contemplation and a look at a rich history of art.

The latest Korean exhibit was fabulous. Color bursts on the scene. The rest of the collection is widely varied and interesting. A research area is especially great for looking behind the artwork. Easy wheelchair access.

Did not have a good experience. From the get go was informed that backpacks were not typically allowed but that we could take ours of we carried it in front of us. I do not recall seeing this information on the website or any signs. Secondly, the staff was not friendly and were constantly patrolling. My mom got told a few times to not stand so close to the art and to not where our backpack. The art was nice but the atmosphere was stale and boring. It may be due to Covid but I have been to quite a few art museums and this was by far one of the most unejoyable experiences I ever had. The unfriendly staff and the stale atmosphere took away the joy of the art. Both my mom and I regret spending the $15 each and out of most of the other museums in Balboa Park, this one was a disappointment. Save your money and go to another museum

A beautiful building that represents what is inside it, it is a medium-size museum, that contains amazing arts from all over the world. I saw a musical performance in front of the museum, I am not sure if that is a regular thing or a one-time event. Note: there is a free day each month for San Diego residence.

I always enjoy a visit to the San Diego Musuem of Art in Balboa Park. One of my favorite events is their annual three day Art Alive exhibit in April. Floral designers interpret an art piece, painting, sculpture, or historic artifact, in a floral design. So many creative uses of flowers, plants and other floral mediums. Museum can get a little crowded for this exhibit, so plan to take your time. Don't forget to enjoy the fabulous art collection that is housed here.

The San Diego museum of art is such an awesome place! I get so excited walking through it’s cool fresh calm rooms and hallways admiring all the art. The workers are so kind and friendly. I usually go in the weekdays because it’s not as busy. And it is just so peaceful and perfect. So happy I live around the corner 😂❤️

This museum has an amazing collection of art! Many of their works that are on display are from well-known artists and there are plenty of opportunities to discover new artists along the way! Both floors of the museum were packed with beautiful paintings and the exhibits are well arranged. The gift shop was a bit pricey, but they did have an excellent collection of books that were for sale.

This is the first time I have seen augmented reality implemented in an art museum. Some art pieces come alive on your phone using their app! Bank of America card holders can visit for free on certain weekends. There is also free Tuesdays every month, I would check their schedule. Even if you pay, the admission is well worth it. Renaissance art, modern art, expressionism, Asian artifacts, very few modern sculptures - something to see for everyone.

SD Residents Free Entrance third Tuesday of every month. Bring ID. Worth the visit. Was able to quickly view in an hour before they closed. Eclectic collection and displays. Not as big as most metropolitan cities but still a decent collection. Definite recommend for residents’ freebies.

I can’t believe I haven’t visited this one. A very pleasant experience since it’s a manageable size and got to really appreciate and admire the current impressionist exhibit especially Monet, Picasso and Bonnard to name a few. It’s organized from entry to the actual exhibits. The building facade is very pretty and right next to Prado. The extra 5 dollars for the special exhibit is really worth it. The outside premises is nice to just walk about.

It's not the Louvre, but for a regional museum, it's pretty nice. Traveling exhibits come through from time to time and are worth the trip. If you're curious or passionate, it won't overwhelm you and you can see some special pieces.

While the art collection at the San Diego Museum of Art is certainly impressive, my recent visit left a lot to be desired. The staff were unfriendly and condescending, which made for an unwelcoming atmosphere. Additionally, the lighting in the museum was poor, which made it difficult to appreciate the artwork fully. The font size of the descriptions next to the art pieces was also disappointingly small, requiring visitors to get uncomfortably close to the artwork in order to read them. Comparing this museum to others in Southern California, such as the Getty in LA, it's clear that there is room for improvement in terms of lighting and font size. While the art collection is nice, I don't think it's worth the price of admission unless you have a free ticket or are particularly interested in a specific exhibit. Overall, I think the San Diego Museum of Art has potential, but they need to focus on improving their lighting and font size, as well as their customer service and organizational structure, in order to create a more enjoyable experience for visitors.

This museum has statues and paintings. There's a free coat check in a secure room and there are two floors. Most of the paintings are portraits. Admission is $20 for adults, but there are discounted rates. Also, this museum is available to visit with a Balboa Park explorer pass.

Came here on a Free Tuesday for San Diego residents. Enjoyed the exhibits in this small at museum. Update: Went to see Korea in Color and loved it. What a great exhibit and made even better with our docent Gina. She was such an amazing docent. One of the best museum tours that I've gone on.

The artwork gets rotated every once in a while. The staff are friendly, and the pace is very clean and quiet. I understand there’s expensive art, but the security guards constantly follow you, get really close to you, and stares at you, which makes it feel weird since it’s so quiet and you have some person staring at you. Overall, it’s a good place.

As with all art museums, the San Diego Museum of Art contains many different exhibits, artifacts, and--of course--artworks! Overall the museum seems like a good standard art museum, but has unique architecture which characterizes the art museum more in relation to art museums in different cities. Definitely would recommend if you have a Balboa Park pass!

The number of collections is kind of low for a big city museum. Also no top tier collections. Only has one painting from Monet and it is not one of his famous paintings.

The biggest most iconic Museum in all of Balboa Park and perhaps even in all of San Diego. I happen to have a membership and go as often as I possibly can to view the ever changing exhibits. The gift shop is amazing! I particularly like the Ginger Lou pressed flower jewelry! oh wait that's mine! Yes, I am the jewelry designer. I hope you enjoy wearing my designs as much as I enjoy sharing them with you ❤️ I just updated my inventory to include my very special abalone and ancient abalone pendants and earrings. The abalone had been buried for many many years and as erosion wears away the soil the shell becomes exposed. I mined the ancient abalone on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean along California's beautiful central coastline.

FANTASTIC museum! Terrible staff member. I wish I could’ve gotten their name, but a woman today threatened to kick me out for breastfeeding my son. When I informed her of my legal rights to feed my son whenever and wherever I need to, she told me “don’t make this harder than it needs to be maam” and “people don’t want to see that walking around..” etc. regardless of your opinions on breastfeeding, I have every legal right to feed my son there and nobody could make me move or leave because of it. Being harassed by a staff member, especially a woman while enjoying a day out at the art museum with my baby was sad. They called security then left me alone, no doubt realizing they were wrong. Then, they made me prove that I had a ticket to get in. Like what? Do better. To the museum - please educate your staff. No woman wants to be harassed for feeding their baby. Do better.

Lots of art, but not the full cross section of prior visits. Certainly worth the visit. Admission prices are reasonable. 2 floors of fine art, very little modern. Beautiful museum with lots to offer for so many interests. World class museum, displays, acquisitions. Located in Balboa Park, which is easy to locate, walk around, rent a scooter with a phone app and walk from one museum to the next. 16 museums in all there. Parking wasn't terrible, although you might need to be patient. Highly recommended!

I love this place. It has a place for every interest for most people. The pieces are well arranged and maintained. The labels are easy to read and are well written. I am not huge into art, but I still really enjoyed myself here. They had a wonderful variety of pieces from different eras and regions. Really neat. I particularly enjoyed the European paintings upstairs and the Asian section down stairs. The building is large enough that you aren't crowded at all while looking at the art and you are able to casually stroll through without bothering others. It's pretty quiet in there since people aren't bringing children, so that's a plus if you're looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.

The past two head curators of SDMA have been straight killing it! We get the most amazing shows, and in addition, we’ve coordinated with other museums to send our works on tour, most notably on loan now is our Cotan. (Sad face when I went in after a hiatus and it wasn’t on display!) We also have so many fun events now. Not to mention our amazing permanent collection, which includes a cache of Latrec posters, which only rarely get exhibited due to their very delicate nature. All in all, I highly recommend a stop by if it’s been a while since your last visit! ****UPDATE**** Clearly, it's 2020. And stuff happened. But I want to share with you updates on SDMA: This museum has really, really stepped up it's online offerings to serve the San Diego community, and also the world. So much new updated content on the website. So many free Zooms and lectures and tours are scheduled. I've been taking part in lovely talks on the robust Indian miniature art collection, Japanese woodblock prints, and so on, that I am just without enough praise for what I see offered by this gem in our midst. As a Museum Junkie, I know that online is not as good as seeing art in person. But under the circumstances, you'd be hard pressed to find a better online place to spend time than SDMA. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

The place has tons of great art and the setup is wonderful, only problem we had was taking children into the museum. They might have been a little loud, but I felt as if we were watched in every room. Maybe to make sure the kids were in line and didn't break anything? Either way, when we said hello to employees, many of them didn't speak back, except to say when one kid may have been out of breathing too loud. I also kinda get the idea that if you don't understand the "art", you're not really welcomed. Just my opinion, take your kids and see for yourself.

It's a must see museum even for the non art lover! Their collections are wide...from classical Italian, to American artists and contemporary art and some sculpture. Plan at least a hour and a half to get value from the admission fee. If your are near San Diego just purchase a museum pass and you can visit often. Throughout the year special exhibitions are held with famous art works borrowed from world wide museums. No food, or restaurant in the museum but the Panama 66 restaurant is next door. I just spent an hour looking at the "Age of Rembrandt" etchings on display thru January 2021. They depicted scenes in the Netherlands and some biblical stories too. Amazing that this art had survived since the middle 1600's I learned to enjoy art!

Enchanted forest of light is truly magical. I felt like I was in a storybook. Love the lights and music that was playing throughout the park. There was food and drinks (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks) in the park.

I'm not someone who it's passionate about art, but visiting the museum was fullfiling. Just walk in each gallery, watch whatever paint that caths your eye and let your imagination run wild. Bagpacks are not allowed, so you have to leave it in the coat check.

Drove here, parked, walked... notice that the museum is closed... even though, it says it's open until 5pm. Not very professional.

One of the 16 museums in the park, this is a great presentation of a wide range of art in a historical building. They have a series of regular galleries with art from around the world and a rotating special collection (Bouguereau & America during our visit). The building is a great host to these collections and they are all presented in a very nice way. Plan on spending 2-4 hours to take in what they have on display. Also check out Panama 66 next door for food, drinks and Jazx on Wednesday evenings!

Doable in an afternoon. Definitely worth it, significant artists, and some new modern exhibits as well. Inside the Balboa park with plenty to do before and after.

I really like SD museum of art! Not only the beautiful building exterior, but also many modern art and paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries. It’s worth to visit!

I went to Art Alive, the museum's annual flower exhibition that features artwork reinterpreted as flowers and other botanicals. It was my first Art Alive and my first visit to the museum in a few years, so there have been some changes. Even though things are reopened, they require masks on inside. Much of the Asian art from the closed Mingei museum has a place here now. There are new sections and room configurations. Some art pieces have been relocated to other rooms. They had an outdoor "bazaar" this year (tickets extra) that gave a nice seating area to eat and people watch with a nice soundtrack getting people into the party vibes. There were modest options for food and gifts. The family activity tent was a great way to do arts and crafts while learning about gardening from docents. You get a free take home succulent when done! I would do this activity last, so you don't have to carry around plant all day. The flowers are amazing and the two-story display in the rotunda is the best one. It was an enjoyable way to see familiar art in a new way. There were also new exhibitions to explore, like colored pencil art that look photographic. Pro-tip, head past Panama 66 for the sculpture garden, an outdoor extension of the museum that's free to see. They created a giant outdoor flower mural for the event.

Very cool experience! Modern yet museum worthy! The friendship garden was amazing! And the fountain was a great photo op! We say many people taking formal photos that day!

A part of and nestled inside Balboa Park. This is a great Museum to visit. The outside is beautiful and the works of art inside more so. Admission is around $20 which I find affordable for the experience.

Mmm I enjoyed but not as much as some other art museums that I’ve visited before. Maybe I shouldn’t compare it with New York Art Museum or Art Institute of Chicago or National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC. You still get yo see some great artworks.

The San Diego Museum of Art has something to offer everyone. It’s an amazing building, that even has large art pieces outside as you walk in. There’s plenty to see inside too, but as you can see from my pictures, it was the architecture for me.

We enjoy this place immensely, particularly when they have art exhibitions like the Monet water lilies. Just walking through the rooms and spending time studying each painting, each sculpture, has a very meditative effect. And it's an inspirational place to be.

Get out of your zone and visit Art that isn't what you hear /see/ think about. This photographic exhibit from an Iranian artist was amazing! The joy and love of film, in its most basic form was....just lovely. Unfortunately, its position is not conducive to an area allowing for free thought. Still...try to get a glimpse.

Would say that it is a pretty-good deal for the admission charged (i think it was $20). The section on Asia (antiques) is very impressive with exhibits dated back to Sui Dynasty (more than 1000 years ago). Couldn't find anything in the Tienda (gift shop though).

Really not the best museum I have ever visited but it was decent. It had a good size collection and the Buddhist collect was very good. The Picasso section was super small and tight, it was also not very appropriate for children so please don’t bring small children to that section. I really liked the broken glass collection and they had many drawings in roll out cubbies, I really wished they weren’t all stacked on together and were actually out of the cubbies and more on display. The museum also had a lot of work of Spanish artist on display. Not bad but not the greatest, I would rate it a 3.8.

This is a great place to bring your entire family. There is an endless amount of art, history and culture. Very educational experience that demonstrates the world below the surface that we rarely think about. We were easily able to see the amazing amount of Art on display!

Very cool but small. Definitely try their augmented reality feature on the free app. It's a little tricky but once you get it, it's pretty awesome. It brings the painting to life and adds movement. It's really cool. If you're a San Diego resident go on the free day.

Worth to visit. Interior is just as impressive as the front of this beautiful building. They have beautiful collections of art, including Dali and Kupka.
