Now this was a hidden gem that I would not only recommend, but I would go back to. Very nice staff. Some amazing classical and modern art, I'm talking real talent poo on a stick type stuff and someone telling me it's "edgy". Air-conditioned. Nice clean bathrooms. Very nice visit. Not that busy for a Saturday.

Not only was this museum a great area to visit, but the entire Balboa Park was beautiful! I highly recommend stopping by for a visit.

Pretty interesting collection with rich history beyond what was written for each piece. You can sit and listen to tour guides who will help you dive a little deeper into each piece. We came at a good time because of their special showcase of Jewels of the Season collection. Admission is free but donations are welcome.

San Diego Art Museum was closed on Wednesdays so we seen this museum right next to it and decided to go in. Was very impressed with their collection of paintings. And free admission!

Beautiful small museum. It's free to enter and has world class paintings. I loved the Christmas ornament display as well!

Can't beat the price. The art is amazing. I always stop by when I am in the area. I would highly recommend everyone stop in. Recommend the $7.00 donation. Side note if anyone knows about the dude on a horse, please advise.

Free admission was a real treat. There were some real masterpieces here. Small museum with older paintings but they also had a new show highlighting women.

A perfect refuge of a museum. A great example of the architecture of a building working for the benefit of each occupant. This museum is not large but it's a bit like walking through the looking glass into another world. The building fairly begs you to linger and soak up the masterpieces on the walls.

It’s a small museum, there are some very interesting pieces. It is free admission and it is located to the right of the San Diego Museum of Art. It had a real nice rococo style painting and overall had about 5 paintings that caught my eye. If you are to visit make sure to watch the tape on the ground as you are not suppose to cross it. I would rate it a 3.5 experience.

Small beautiful museum located right in the middle of Balboa Park, admission is free and has interesting collections of European paintings. The layout of the museum is simple and refreshing, it’s nice to be able to go to one room at a time without the need of a map. Ask the front desk for a “scavenger hunt” for your little one, my 8 year old has SO much fun looking at different paintings for little clues on his hunt. I think every museum should have a set-up like that to get the maximum involvement from children, overall pleasant experience and I can’t wait to go back.

It's nice to step into a free museum once in a while. Has a nice atmosphere and good art pieces. Been there several times taking people for the first time and they always say they liked it.

Art work was delightful. Decorations were stunning, especially each handmade beaded ornament. Lots of details in each and every one of them, and there were hundreds. My kids really enjoyed their first art gallery experience. Glad it was at the Timken.

A small gem in the heart of Balboa Park with free admission, which is a big plus. Some great paintings, so it is a must for art lovers. When I was there, a painting was under restoration and it was even possible to watch the work of the experts on it at a certain timeframe (what I unfortunately missed).

Beautiful and unique building in San Diego. If you enjoy architecture history I recommend you check out this place. It's also the only museum that offers complimentary entrance in the park. You can see Rembrandt amongst many others inside this jewel so check it out before more people find out.

Cute little museum filled with historic paintings. Great for art appreciation enthusiasts 😁

Free admission? Count me in! Loved the art that was presented. It was more on the religious side today but who knows what you may see when you go.

The museum is free all year round and houses pretty interesting Russian art pieces, especially the Christian-themed icons. I had not seen these or Russian art in particular until I visited the museum. Come check out the intricate work of the adornment for these icons.

Free art museums are always my favorite. The collection isn't huge but it's enough to spend some time perusing. There is also pleanty of staff that are excited to discuss the many aspects of the art they have on display. Make sure you take advantage of them.

Wonderful FREE art museum in Balboa Park. The holiday display of gorgeous beaded ornaments in December. Nice collection. Comfortable benches. Friendly staff. Always worth a visit.

Free museum. You can find Slavic and Italian paintings. And then there's 19th-century Yosemite.

FREE MUSEUM. Very nice little museum, but due to the size of the place, the visit is done very fast, which can be nice for some people, but I would have enjoyed to see more.

Great art museum, and its free! Download the app to descriptions and artist background for the paintings on permanent display. They have a scavenger hunt to get the kiddos involved too.

A free art museum in Balboa park. With beautiful arrangements of paintings from different corners of the globe this gallery is a great primer for the rest of the museums that house art in the area.

I went with a few of my friends to Balboa Park playing Pokemon Go during Christmas time and we accidentally came across this gem (not to be confused with Pokemon gym)! We decided to go inside and check it out. So glad we did, they had homemade Christmas ornaments strung on the ceilings and all down the hallway which eventually led to the end of the building where the building split into two parts where all the art is. During this holiday time, they had all sorts of beautiful religious art (they change out the art occasionally so it won't always be these) from around the world. I wish we'd found this place earlier for other art events because I love art.

The only free museum here. It seems to be one floor only. You need to check in your bags to go in. The arts displayed is about bible, French, English and American. There is a restroom too. Also, there is a WiFi and Pokémon go gym. You can take a rest here and play Pokémon. You should stop by it whenever you come to the balboas park.

Very friendly staff. Incredible works of art with helpful explanations. I'm not sure if it's always free but it was when we visited. Great Meseum!

Rude staff. We were talked down to at the front door as if we didn't have any comprehension skills. Planned on looking at the artwork, but after that it wasn't worth it. There are plenty of other beautiful museums and spots in Balboa.

A nice small art museum that is included with the Balboa Park explorer pass. I especially liked this one painting.

  • 5/5 John R. 1 year ago on Google
Great experience. Docent shared information regarding 4 paintings which was very interesting. Staff are willing to answer questions. The museum is free but good will offerings are appreciated. Parking at Balboa is also free so don't miss this great opportunity. A Balboa Park pass is a great way to see other museums that have entrance fees. Visitor center is across from Timkin Art if you have questions. Have fun.

Very cute place! Stellar exhibits, but too small. Too many people... Wasn't possible to social distance. 🫤

so nice! i have never been inside in all the years i have lived here. Im not sure if whispering is mandatory but the atmosphere is respectful and polite, all ages can enjoy the serenity of the art on display!
