If you're a fan of the movie, you need to step aboard the Surprise. Very well kept, it's interesting to see how crews lived and worked at sea. The docent provides facts and figures about the ship and movie filming. Entrance fee is reasonable considering you see several ships and a Russian Foxtrot class cold war sub all for one price.

Loved the movie. Delighted to be able to walk around on the actual vessel. Some of the exhibits could have been elaborated on but overall incredible experience.

I first visited the "Surprise" a few years ago. I didn't think it was in great shape then and was sad to see how much it's deteriorated in the years since then. Keeping in mind that this is basically a movie prop, they should spend a little of the entrance fee on upkeep. They had a couple of kids as guides who had never heard of Jack Aubrey. They could have at least watched the movie or better yet, read the books.

I was surprised that I recognized the ship! Immediately I thought, Master and Commander! Haha. It's closed right now for repairs. I can't wait for it to re-open so I can go aboard. It's interesting that it was just in a film and in great shape less than 20 years ago but looks like it's falling apart now. I'm sure there's a story behind this that I just don't know.

Eh. Jack Aubrey would have a stroke if he saw it! All kidding aside it's ok... But below decks should be setup more like an actual warship. The ship is in major disrepair... Which is kinda crazy considering how much they charge for the museum. This ship isn't really all that old... But compared to the Constitution it's in far worse shape.

It's cool, but it's a replica. Also, the third photo I posted is not of the HMS Surprise but I'm not sure how to delete it :/

HMS Surprise was originally built in 1970 as a replica of the 18th C. Royal frigate "Rose." It sailed for 30 years as a British training ship and public attraction. In 2000, it was converted with painstaking authenticity into a 24 gun frigate for the 2003 award-winning movie Master and Commander, starring Russell Crowe. The film was set during the Napoleonic Wars in battles off the coast of South America with the French ship Acheron. -- The HMS Surprise joined the San Diego Maritime Museum in 2004. In 2020-21, the ship was partially restored and almost completely redecked.
