Liberty
Station
is
a
park
maintained
mostly
by
the
City
of
San
Diego.
Formally
the
Naval
Training
Center,
where
thousands
of
service
men
and
women
began
their
careers
in
the
Navy
since
the
Spanish
American
War.
The
training
center
was
decommissioned
by
the
Navy
and
sold
to
the
City
of
San
Diego.
Extensive
walking
paths,
green,
open
areas
for
children,
bbq
stations,
picnic
tables
as
well
as
an
excellent
food
court
in
the
upscale
Public
Market
gives
this
place
an
eclectic
feel
to
live
and
play.
A
prominent
memorial
to
52
ships
and
crew
that
fought
and
died
in
WW1
and
WW2
is
decorated
with
American
flags
on
special
dates
throughout
the
year.
Liberty
Station
is
a
5
minute
car
ride
to
San
Diego
international
Airport.
There
are
several
mid
level
hotels
within
walking
distance
of
the
Liberty
Station
Conference
Center.
The
Conference
Center
sits
beside
the
USS
Recruit,
a
landlocked
training
ship.
The
landscaping
is
maintained
by
the
hotels
and
restaurants
around
the
Conference
Center.
It
is
always
clean
and
green
and
well
maintained.
The
City
park
has
problems
with
broken
and
malfunctioning
sprinklers.
A
long
standing
drought
has
compounded
this
with
broad
sections
of
dead
brush
in
areas
where
the
sprinkler
system
is
non-functional,
interspersed
between
areas
of
new
growth
and
the
occasional
puddles
of
standing
water
from
leaking
water
pipes.
An
extreme
overpopulation
of
ground
squirrels
have
dug
tunnels
and
burrows
from
the
water's
edge
all
the
way
into
the
parking
areas
nearly
50
yards
away.
However,
the
park
is
still
a
place
for
families,
for
parties
and
picnics.
Ceremonies,
farmer's
markets
and
Art
Walks.
I
hope
you
come
visit.
