Great, unexpectedly educational experience for my family. The visit was interactive and the exhibits were excellent. It was not a big space but there were exhibits of marine animals, birds, reptile, small sharks, rays, and sea turtles. The view was also gorgeous. To get here, you must park at the small lot on E (don't pass it or it will take you a while to make a u turn from afar) and take a shuttle. The shuttle comes about every15 min.

My wife and I visited this animal refuge shelter a few days ago.It only cost us $14 each to tour the facility which would normally take about an hour.My wife brought her digital SLR and we hung around a good 2 hours while she took photos of every creature she saw.We saw lots of sharks, turtles, rays, tortoises, all types of eagles, a few owls and lots more.We watched a feeding session for a Golden Eagle and a Bald Eagle. It was amazing to see such beautiful birds up close and personal. It's a fabulous place and everyone no matter what age would find something of interest here.

We loved it! My partner and I are birders besides wildlife enthusiasts. The buildings and gardens themselves are very tasteful. Besides the birds in the aviaries, we spotted sea birds and a few hummingbirds. The staff is very knowledgeable, courteous, and kind The marsh trails are awash with yellow, white and some purple flowers. Highly recommend.

Inexpensive fun and educational place. Love the variety of aquatic/ reptile tanks inside. They have the stringray/shark exhibit. You are able to pet the stingrays as it was built over 20 years ago it is a little challenging for kids to reach over and touch them. Beautiful small bird esturar.

Such a fun little outing. We had a lot of fun. I will be back. Next time with a picknik lunch. I like how we were able to park and the shuttle picked us up. That was very helpful.

A great option for locals. Heads up its gonna cost about $70 for a family of four. Plan to spend at least 3 hours here. You start off at the parking lot. Parking is free. Grab the shuttle (it's free and tipping is not required). Note, you cannot walk to the center. Theres a gate and it only opens for the shuttle. Once you arrive, check out the sea life. The tank in the back is full of action!. Note, there are no dining facilities so bring food and drinks. The bathrooms are clean too.

The Living Coast Discovery Center is located in Chula Vista and is one of the South Bays beloved habitat with many coastal sea animals, plants and birds. This Zoo/Aquarium is such a fun family outing and be spent learning and exploring. Free parking is available, visitors are then taken on a shuttle to a be location. I believe the shuttle arrives every 15 minutes. The kids were very excited to be able to touch some of the sea animals along with exploring the garden. Throughout the center are friendly staff who are more than happy to answer any questions you may have and are very knowledgeable about the animals and the center. We definitely recommend taking water and maybe some snacks to eat outdoors overlooking the estuary. The center features a Turtle Lagoon, Aquarium, Shark & Ray Experience with an interactive touch pool, Bird Encounters, Native Pollinator Garden, Compost Garden with useful resources and information for everyone of all ages, and beautiful wildlife trails.

It was an incredible place! Friendly staff, excellent exhibits and a nice walking trail! It's a good thing I got the annual pass, so I can go again with my family! I definitely recommend it, especially if you have small children!! The rays and other creatures are so cool, it is just too bad it's not letting me post the videos or I would have! My children adored their visit! It's also a really short wait for the shuttle to arrive and pick you up! Can not wait to go again!!! Thank you, staff, for letting us have this experience!

The Living Coast Discovery Center is a great place to visit, and I can see why people hold memberships for this gem. The staff is very friendly and informative, full of passion for the conservation of the animals they house. There are educational programs for kids and school groups, and there is also a nice trail to walk through the Wildlife Refuge. I highly recommend visiting this great non profit to get an excellent up-close view of some of the native wildlife that Californians should be proud of.

Edit: to be fair and as the center pointed out my visit was on December 2018, I truly hope that they picked things up since, because as I have said this place has a lot of potential, so please visit it and update us. Original: For me it was a huge disappointment, the place has potential to become a top attraction, but there is a clear lack of attention, it is huge but most of it is empty, the service is bad, I recommend you to skip it and enjoy your time in other more fun locations.

This was a delightful surprise. It is not a big place that will take all day. However, it is a great place to spend a couple hours. The bird enclosures we very nice. Everything was clean. The small trail was absolutely beautiful, with the daisies blossoming. Family friendly. Free parking and shuttle from parking area.

I love this place! I love the fact that they are rescuing and helping animals and its not just a zoo that profits off of keeping animals in captivity. When we went it wasn't too over- crowded, probably because you can't just park and walk in. There is a parking area and shuttle busses that take groups to and from the building. So when a full bus comes back, they pick up another group. I was also impressed with how close you can actually get to some of the animals (within reason) and observe them in a natural habitat-like setting. My favorite was probably the bald eagle. I couldn't believe I was looking at an actual bald eagle in real life, it was an amazing experience! Also the sea turtles, they're so cute! And the staff is super friendly and helpful and always ready to give you information about the animals they have at the time. It seems small but we were there for a couple of hours and didn't even go across and do the trails, so I definitely can't wait to go back!

We had a wonderful time here! We purchased the VIP sea turtle experience for an extra $10/person and it was well worth it; Ashley was a fantastic interpreter. We spent about three hours total among the exhibits, trails, and VIP experience. We tried the scavenger hunt app, but experiencing the exhibits was more fun so we didn't spend much time with it. We borrowed a trail backpack from the admission desk, they included binoculars which were handy to have on the trails.

Love this place. My kids have gone to a few of their week long camps. It’s a great way to spend their school breaks. They loved the camps and learned so much. Not only do they learn about science, it also increases sense of community and desire to care for the environment and animals. Sailing and other activities were amazing bonuses for them to experience through the camps as well. I recommend the program for anyone considering. I enjoyed walking around the center and outside area on my own after dropping them off or when I arrived early than the assigned pick up time. When my youngest son was in the half day program, we had a great time bonding and exploring the property together while waiting for my older son to get out of the full day program.

Such a fabulous local place to learn about nature and have fun with the kids. The one on one excursions are extremely affordable and the animals are so close it's like you can reach out and touch them. Also, there are so many things in the gift shop that are affordable...i wanted to buy everything. Living Coast is doing such a great and important job to preserve our local wildlife! I was truly impressed with everything. I will definitely be purchasing a membership! I can't wait to visit again.

Wonderful place! So glad we stopped by. We caught the shuttle just in time in the parking lot and it's about a 5 minute drive to the center. Loved the shark and ray touch pool though it's pretty deep and hard to touch them. We only had an hour here but wish we could've stayed longer!

Small but educational and nice views of the coast. They feed Turtles at 1pm and Sting Rays/Sharks at 2pm on weekends. I like that you can bring your own food and they have a lot of places in the shade to sit and eat with a great view. You have to park at a shuttle pick-up and then they take you over so don’t follow the map all the way. My only 2 negative things is the hand rails are rusted… not safe for kids. Also the shuttle drop off they have to go twice as far on the way back because there is no turn or U-turn… they should just make a drop off on other side of street.

Love this place! I have brought my son, nephew & nieces here when they were small....20 years later I am able to bring my great niece and nephew and enjoy watching them looking at all the exhibits. They loved the scenic bus ride to and from the center. They especially loved walking around the out door exhibits and were in awe seeing the eagels. I just wished they had a snack bar or vending machines.

I really enjoyed my visit. There were a variety of animals at the centre, and we were able to see some of the animal feedings. Staff were very helpful and even gave a little in-depth information about animals they were feeding. There are also some panels where you could press a button to listen to the animal sounds. Great for kids! You need to take the shuttle which comes quite frequently in order to get from the parking lot to the centre.

This was a great experience for my kids even as teens they liked it! Shocking I know lol! We paid and scheduled before the visit to feed the sea turtles and it was awesome!!!!! Very memorable! We also got a behind the scenes tour! It was a hit. Great spot to take pictures! Loved the turtles and it is a cute little building. The stingrays are cool we got to touch the small ones when we were on the tour. Definitely do the tour!!! Staff is kind, friendly and helpful. Lots of fun!!

The place is really informative and fun with a lot if interactive signs to encourage kids and youngs to learn more about the environment. However due to current construction the entrance is a bit weird, after parking at a super odd sharp turn into the parking lot, you need to wait 15' for a shuttle to come get you, there's a number for you to call at the wait station but no one answered and it seemed like no one would come but eventually a bus showed up. Everything looked like it could use some maintain and clean up for a quite energetic place. I think cause most or all of the staffs are volunteers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

TLDR: A little on the pricey side, but worth it for what's offered. I get the opportunity to come here several times a year, and I'm never disappointed with what creatures I get to admire. Sharks, rays, turtles, octopus, and more. It was 18 dollars per person last I checked, and I believe the prices vary whether you're a child or veteran. Multiple spots dot the area which are suitable for taking a rest break or modest picnic, and birds and relaxing panoramic views are a welcoming feature.

This place was great! The kids LOVED IT. We missed the Eagle info tour because we only got to the parking lot around 10:50am/10:55am. We had to wait for the next bus pickup, which took a few minutes and then a few minutes in the bus and we ended up getting to the Discovery Center about 11:15am/11:20am. BUT we did make it in time for the trail "hiking" tour, which is really just a walk around one of the several trails they have there. It was very fun and informational. We also made it for the Ray and Shark tank/info session where we all got to try and pet the sharks and rays in the tank they have there. All of the employees and guides that we spoke to were full of information and passion about working there and what they do there to preserve and conserve the animals and habitats they have access to and just in general, everywhere around the world. It was so nice to see them at work, doing what they love. It was inspiring! They even brought out oneof the smaller birds of prey at the end, just before they closed, to let us see and hear more about it and other birds of prey. It was beautiful and watchful. This was such a great experience for the adults and the kids! We shopped in the little gift shop, where they have several interesting games, books and other things that even I wanted to get and at reasonable prices. We will likely be getting a year long membership here, to give back to this place and for us and the kids to have somewhere to go to learn. While the Center isn't free , the trails and such that are outside are open and free for anyone to enjoy.

It's a great small sanctuary for injured & previously captive animals. They made it into an educational center so I definitely encourage you to support your local animal sanctuary/zoo. They also have a composting area where you can learn how to compost. The workers are enthusiastic & passionate, great fun times for the family.

Omgosh what an incredible experience. I had gome when i was in elementary school back in the 90's. My children loved sea-ing ;) the stingrays and being able to touch them during the feeding as well as seeing the other animals of the sanctuary. My daughter was won over by Sapphire the sea 🐢 turtle. My son loved the eagles and the jellyfish. We definitely won't wait another 27 years before coming back!

A terrific place to learn about local wildlife. The site is beautiful, historical, and wild. The plants and animals are well cared for and great to see up close and personal. Bring the family, stop by after work. Afternoons are quietest and when more wildlife can be observed. Just make sure you show up early enough to catch the shuttle in and see it all before closing time. Membership is a great value and you can find no place like it on San Diego Bay. You are surrounded by urban development yet it is at such a distance that you feel the tranquility of the wild.

PRETTY COOL ! My wife and I brought our young grand daughter here not long back. We did a tour here a few years ago and thought our little girl would like the place. Of course like everyone else intent on a tour we drove to the car park nearby and waited for the complimentary bus to come by and transport us to the facility. Within 15 minutes the bus pulled up and a bunch of us boarded for the slow scenic drive to the center....it takes about 15 minutes. Soon after we disembarked the bus our grand daughter was talking to the Turtles in the outside aquarium. We paid for our visit and proceeded to walk around looking at the indoor aquatic displays and a few other things ....like Snakes & a Chameleon. We also checked out the Stingrays and small Sharks in the huge tank further inside. After a lunch break...we brought our own packed lunch because unfortunately there is no cafe or food available once you are here. We then walked around the outdoor bird enclosures and saw little Owls, Ducks, a Tortoise, some large Eagles and Hawks. We took lots of photos but it was very difficult to take quality photos of the large Raptors because of their thick wire mesh enclosures and a fence barrier. Overall we had a great time and our little grand daughter learned a bit about wildlife. A cafe would be a welcome addition to the center benefiting the hundreds of daily visitors and also providing a steady income stream for the maintenance of the Living Coast Discovery Center. Worth a visit !

Awesome little treasure in Chula Vista. We love the sea turtles and octopus, followed by the rays and sharks, with a walk with the birds (especially the bald eagles). Great for groups and parties!! Had a birthday for my youngest here recently and they really go above and beyond. They organized games and crafts, a few tours, a hike along the bay side trails collecting wild flowers, and they even got to hand feed the sting rays. Very satisfied and I highly recommend, even for a day trip this place is not too far, reasonably priced, and super Interesting. Shuttle takes you from parking lot Into the nature center grounds. Lots of interesting animals and very friendly staff, my daughters loved the octopus!! Thank you again.
