Amazing volunteers who know all the details and are highly passionate about everything at the museum - very impressive - rated third best maritime museum in the world after England’s and Australia’s. Take the boat tour $10 for 75 minutes - informative and truly the cost only covers the gas. Lots of displays that never end - really interesting and a bargain to get in They are always looking for more volunteers so please help out if you are local

Get the swift boat ride, it is incredible. Also, this is an amazing collection of model ships, the largest i have ever seen. All the boats are great depictions of history. Highly recommended, along with all the water front.

Very interesting to see the different ships through different time periods. It was fun to go in ships and the submarine. Can see layout being confusing for some. Most ships are well preserved, one was dry docked. Lots of parking out front that is pay per spot. ( We parked at Midway hit that in am and walked here) hint if you buy online Midway tickets you save $5 a person at Maritime museum admission.

I had no idea this was so huge. I just thought it was the star of India so I previously had no interest in going inside. Boy am I glad we finally did. Not only are there several historical boats to see, as well as a submarine, there are also scale models of basically the whole off maritime history. The gallery is so well done and fun to peruse. It's a little worse for wear in some areas, but overall well worth the time and money spent!

Very cool place. You could spend 4 or 5 hours there. Definitely get a boat tour. Check ahead to see if the gift shop is open. It was closed when we were there. Parking can be tough, but it's San Diego, so be patient. The museum is mostly on the ferry and the other boats you are free to explore. Well worth it if you're in the area.

Fantastic tour through history, just fascinating! Highly recommend it. The submarine was so interesting, how do that many men live in such a small space! Love the ferry, get on board and see the steam engine working! Listen for the snapping shrimp, so unbelievable 🤔 you can actually hear them through the steel hull! The sailing ships are fascinating, so much to learn. Life aboard was so hard, work work work, beer and biscuit and a k to work! History is so relavent today. Folks in those times were so much tougher than folks today. We need to toughen up as our lives are so easy compared to their lives. Even our worst day was probable better than their best day! A lot to be thankful for.

Fun and worth a visit. If you do the boat tour choose the civilian boat. The other was loud and we couldn't hear our guide.

You must go and pay extra for the Swift boat tour. It's great for families and the elderly. The tours would be harder for a elderly person to get on and off the boats but not the Swift boat tour. Park at the USS Midway. It's a small walk but not bad considering the price for parking is better with a 12 hour time limit. My 2 teenage boys love it.

We went for the parade of lights. The boats at the museum are incredibly well taken care of and the staff was more then pleasant to be around. The parade or lights dinner was…okay. Great portions. Would recommend if you have the time. Submarine was incredible and my kids loved it.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is an awesome place to visit. Apart from the fleet of several magnificent original and replica vessels to explore at your leisure, the museum boasts an impressive maritime collection with more models, displays, stories, recreations and memorabilia than I could take in. I spent about 3 hours, and that was without joining a bay tour. I entered the museum at opening on a Sunday (10am), so it was not crowded. I enjoyed being the only person aboard the Medea, watching the San Salvador replica glide into dock. A visit to the museum would be a fascinating, entertaining and educational outing for kids and adults alike. The general admission price is relatively inexpensive at $20 (no cash accepted).

We visited here as part of the San Diego GoCity Explorer Pass. Street parking was convenient and adjacent, and we spent 2.5 hours touring all of the ships and reading most of the exhibits. Lots to see - the submarine, Star of India, and HMS Surprise were our favorites.

Great old ferry boat, submarine, merchant ships, and the ship from the Master and Commander movie. We’re desert-dwellers so getting to see stuff like this was a wonderful change of scenery. Definitely take one of the harbor tours- it adds much to the museum experience.

So many pieces of naval history. Multiple siling ships, a submarine a PT boat and a big giant steam ferry. I think one of my favorite parts was the engine room of the steam ferry. We originally went to go on a ride on the Californian, One of their tall ships. It was amazing and worth every penny.

We've visited the Maritime Museum a few times and the displays are really interesting and educational. Seeing and being able to go on board the historic (and replica) ships is really awesome. On our most recent visit, we did the harbor tour aboard the historic Pilot Boat, which was a lot of fun. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, so even as a local, he kept it interesting.

"Lesser of two weavels"... The ship from the movie "Master and Commander" is docked here and that alone makes it worth the price of admission. Every time I come to San Diego I find myself coming back here. A unique nautical museum that explores the history of the Navy and maritime travel in general.

The ONLY, and I mean, ONLY reason why I gave Nightlife a 4 instead star is because I went late and half the museum was closed by the time I got there, so I cannot write a full review. I stayed mainly at the aquarium, and even that was AMAZING! And only for the low price of $10 to get in. Genuinely exquisite!

An incredible place with an amazing collection of boats and submarines. Totally worth the pass to see everything. No better deal exists to see this many historic naval vessels. Helpful and friendly staff on most of the boats, and not particularly crowded, either. Kids will love this.

I don't know any other place in the world that does live in action tall ship cruises including firing on pirate ships. This is the coolest place I found in this city. If you haven't been, humor me and try it out. So much to learn and so many people that really really enjoy what they do and want to share the fantastic Maritime history that we have.

We loved the 45 minute free boat ride with general admission ($20). It was a great way to get out safely during the pandemic. For 20 bucks you get all day admission to multiple boats and a 45 minute bay cruise with tour guides!! A great day!! Amazing views right now too since the mega cruise ships are not docked in the bay. Nearby the museum there are outside bars to grab a drink!

This is a great place to visit for anyone who enjoys the visuals and general knowledge of older sea vessels. This museum includes the oldest sail boat, an antiqued ferry, a couple submarines, and several other amazing ships as well. Included in the admission price is a pilot boat tour around the bay. If you haven't been here, put it on your list.

I would like to especially acknowledge the staff for having such positive attitudes on a busy day. I know big crowds and impatient customers can be overwhelming, so I greatly appreciated their professionalism. Joshua, David, Gino and Jamir (I think there was one or two more staff members? I'm sorry I didn't catch their names). Either way they all were super friendly and helpful, even with all the long lines and pushing people.

Amazing artifacts from the old maritime history of US. I particular recommend the Pilot Ship Cruise, it is an add on to the museum entry fee but it is well worth. Crew member Kiki does explain in a joyful and knowledgeable way all the nitty gritty details of the history of the San Diego bay. Do not miss the bell-like arcs of the San Diego bridge and the view of the US Midway. Godspeed!

Maritime museum is simply an awesome place to visit! Many ships here to see and experience, you can board them, walk around, read about their history and get a feel for what life was like for the people that operated, lived, worked, or fought upon them was like. Very eye opening and worth the visit. The Russian nuclear submarine sadly was damaged and is currently closed and is one of my favorite attractions here so hopefully they'll be able to restore and reopen in the future but still very worth it.

This museum is great. If your fan of sailing history this is a place to go. I would recommend parking close to it as the meters max at 3 hours. But otherwise go see the deepest diving sub and HMS Surprise the latter being used in two movies but built to Admiralty drawings of a sixth rate vessel. They also offer tours on pilot boat and a Navy PCR.

Travel is about experiences. In the case of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, it's about the past, the present, and even the future. We visited the museum last month as a visit here will be a part of our new San Diego group travel experience. As we are a nautical- and ocean-focused company, spending time at the Museum is just a must-do when in San Diego. The indoor museum space is replete with nautical and ship history, old equipment, ship models, and truly invaluable knowledge concerning nautical history. However, our favorite part of the Museum was exploring the collection of ships. Tall ships are our thing, so the Californian, San Salvador, and Star of India were particularly enjoyable. We are looking forward to bringing groups to the Museum to enjoy sails on the Californian. In summary, the Museum is a wonderful part of the San Diego community and we look forward to supporting their efforts in the future.

This was an amazing museum with so much history. We added this to our San Diego CityPass. We got there at opening and there was no line and no crowd. The adults and kids enjoyed exploring the different ships and learning the history of the old ships and life living in them. Some of these boats are still active boats and events can even be planned on some of them. Its in a beautiful location right in the heart of San Diego Harbor. We added the harbor tour onto our tickets and were able to take a tour on an old Military boat. 🪖 It was great learning of the history of the Harbor and the boat right from a real Vietnam Navy boat. We even had the Navy wave at us and people waving from the USS Midway. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and nice. I highly recommend the Maritime Museum and the added Harbor tour on you San Diego adventure.

One of the most amazing museums you could ask for - I loved it!! Talking with the WWII vet volunteer (Mr. Allen) on the Berkeley was a blast, he had so many interesting stories to share. Crawling all through the Star of India was nothing but incredible, can't recommend it enough. And of you can, ABSOLUTELY do the military Swift Boat bay tour - and for the most fun, sit at the front of the boat!! Now to be fair, my only complaint, if you can call it that, is that the on-site parking maxes out at 3 hours, And the system they use isn't so great. I really wish they used a system like Park Mobile where if you are not there, you can manage it from your phone and add more time, and there is a daily cap out... But it's way more than 3 hours. Reason why I say this is because 3 hours was not enough time for me to see everything I wanted to see. Let's be honest, I could practically spend 3 hours on the Star of India alone! Plus if you do any of the boat tours, they can last anywhere from one and a half hours to 4 hours - If you do one of the tall ship tours, you simply wouldn't be able to park there anyway. And I see that as being a little bit unfair. So that's my only real complaint - however, I was smart enough to ask the guy at the ticket counter what his recommendation for parking would be because I was probably going to be there for 5 hours at least, and he recommended that I park across the street in the underground parking. This was a fantastic recommendation because it was close enough where walking wasn't too painful (I do have physical limitations) and the price was reasonable. And they allow you to park there all day if needed. So just keep that in mind. Also, as just a side note to anybody who is like me and loves to buy souvenirs, the gift shop will close about 2 hours before the museum itself closes. I was really really not a fan of that, I didn't get to buy something. But I do plan on coming back next year so I will visit the gift shop before I tour the place. Other than those complaints though, everything else was so wonderful I can't even knock off a star. It was a wonderful museum, so much history, so much wonderful people to talk to and historical things to enjoy. I'm blown away by how amazing everything was, I love the people who volunteer here and I love the work they do. A thousand times recommend going here and being ready to spend a whole day, you won't regret it.

We had a lovely time! I wanted to see the Star of India, and the Surprise (Master and Commander, Pirates of the Caribbean) was a nice bonus. We didn't see Russell Crowe, though. It was so fun seeing these ships in real life. The Star of India is amazing! It's huge! I can't wait to revisit this lovely museum.

1st time here, and it was fun! Took my grandson, as he's a fan of the Star of India. We explored all the vessels. We learned about the tours aboard the PFC U-boat, but they were sold out, so on the list for the next visit. We could easily spend half a day there or whole day reading and learning. I recommend the membership!

Great collection of ships to explore. Each vessel has a unique place in history. We were there during the period of heavy rains in early February 24 and the Submarine was closed. I really wanted to see that, but I understand that they have to protect these ships. We found close by parking so it was easy access. Well worth your time for a visit. If you have heard the phrase where someone said "they know their ropes" well, the picture I've posted is the names of the ropes on the "Star of India", it's no small task to "know your ropes."

I love the staff members we had on 11/19/2023 they were very informative and supportive. Made my family feel comfortable, especially when my 13 year old son got sea sick. We all got to experience a wonderful time sailing beautiful San Diego! FYI we ended up walking in to the museum that same day and buying tickets for the California boat, since there were opening for aboard. For a family of 4; ( 13yr 2 adults and a 1 year old ) we paid $420

Visiting the Maritime Museum was an exhilarating experience, especially for anyone with a fascination for boats. The museum's collection of vessels offers a captivating journey through maritime history. From majestic tall ships to sleek modern boats, there's something to capture the imagination of visitors of all ages. Exploring the exhibits felt like stepping back in time and witnessing the evolution of seafaring technology firsthand. The attention to detail in preserving and showcasing these maritime treasures is truly commendable. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or simply curious about maritime history, the Maritime Museum promises an enriching and exciting experience. It's a must-visit destination for anyone with a passion for the sea and its vessels.

I've been to this Museum many times and it's wonderful. The only problem is is finding parking if you do choose to go to this Museum bring a couple rolls of quarters cuz she'll definitely need them for the parking. I do recommend parking at the USS Midway parking lot you'll ultimately save money if you do choose to spend a significant amount of time at this Museum.

We cannot say anything but good things about the Steam Ferry Berkley staff. We stopped during our walk around the area and my wife (or is a massive collector) asked if she could have a small sliver of the boards being replaced on the ship. They did one better and gave her an actual, original, bolt that was being replaced which made our entire trip out to San Diego. That was so nice of them to do that and she treasures it. Please, if you have a chance, stop by this location and check it out. We have a full review of the Steam Ferry Berkley on our blog site and YouTube channel.

Wonderful location for very historic ships. The Star of India is one of the highlights of this museum. Also two submarines from times passed. A couple of eighteen century ships and a replica of a fourteen century Spanish Galleon. It it located right near downtown San Diego. Mission Bay is a very historic location because being a natural harbor attracted many visitors since before the Spanish first came.

Cool attraction with more than you can really do in one trip. Ships from various time periods and 2 submarines. Educational and makes you appreciate modern ships.

This place is by far one of the best places in San Diego. For a small fee of $18 for the entrance you can visit five ships and 2 submarines plus you can get a trip around the bay for $10 extra, you cannot beat that price, everywhere else they charge up to $70 to $150 for the same type of trip. Enjoy!

Recently visited for an overnight field trip with a bunch of 9/10yr olds. WOW, the program they have put together and the lengths they go through to make it an authentic experience for the kids is incredible!!!! Very knowledgeable staff and great actors too! So much cool information, hard to get bored on this trip! If you just want to visit for the day, come early when crowds are thinner and bring plenty of quarters for the parking meters out front. Would recommend calling ahead if traveling with someone in crutches or wheelchair as accessing the various ships docked may not be accessible due to their original designs. The Berkeley should be more accessible. Bathrooms located on the Surprise and at the top of the Berkeley. Can't wait to go back and explore on my own!

My favorite fast, casual spot for a fresh, healthy, feel-good meal. I have a lot of stomach/digestion issues and I could not be happier with the way I feel after eating New Americans Museum. All of their food is top quality, with premium ahi tuna and grass fed meats to their fresh pressed juices. I have yet to find a meal on the menu that I have not devoured!

Very cool place. I thought I will just walk around and leave soon but stucked there for around 2 hours. There are a lot of thing to see and it's very interesting especially if you are into marine stuff. Also, the atmosphere is pretty dope there!

Surprisingly interesting museum. There's so much cool information. The boats and ships are so much fun to explore. There's a Soviet submarine and the HMS Surprise from the movie Master & Commander. I lived it, but then I'm a nerd and love history.

  • 5/5 Henry M. 3 years ago on Google
Mostly run by 3-5 people they are all friendly and helpful. The submarine is off limits (inside) but they still have a good selection of replica ships to see

  • 5/5 Chris S. 5 years ago on Google
This is one of the coolest museums that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Some real nautical history here and you can spend the whole day perusing through the exhibits for only $18. The soviet submarine was intense to walk through, and really gives a perspective on how things must have been during war times. The Star of India was also a favorite of mine here

Remarkable maritime museum, with • TWO Class-A tall ships (lengths greater than 125 feet), • two submarines: 1 U.S. record-holding deep-diving sub #555, 1 Soviet-era Foxtrot-class — the B-39 • replica of the Baltimore clipper-class tops'l schooner C.W. Lawrence -- the Californian, the official tall ship of the state of California • replica of the first European ship to visit what is now San Diego, the San Salvador, a Spanish galleon • the oldest still-sailing commercial tall ship in the world -- the Star of India -- an emigrant ship Great Britain ==> Australia and New Zealand • the H.M.S. Surprise, from multiple films: Master and Commander, and some of the The Pirates of the Caribbean films • a Vietnam-era Swift boat • a century-old Bay Area passenger ferry, the Berkeley, full of exhibits and models

Great place to be able to board old boats and submarines. It's a self guided tour so you can take as long as you need to see above and below the decks on all the boats. For an additional fee they do offer a boat tour of the harbor. There is also a museum on one of the boats with lots models, photography, and history of sailing.

  • 5/5 Veronica B. 2 years ago on Google
Love the experience and the history of it all. A great place to visit with the kiddos! You can spend a whole day here visiting the boats and taking pictures!

I have been coming here since I was a kid. I absolutely love this place and so does my husband. It is so awesome to walk on such immaculately cared for sailing vessels. The Star of India is always the show stealer for me given her incredible history. It's cool to put in to perspective how our ancestors used to travel. They even have a movie ship used in Master Commander Far Side of the World. Both the pilot boat bay tour and the Vietnam boat tours are awesome, reasonably priced, and super informative.

  • 5/5 Peggy M. 2 years ago on Google
It was so fascinating. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the history and amazing replicas as well as the actual ships. We added the Bay tour as well. Loved it all.

We had such a great time at this museum on the water, so much history of the ships, their time in history, how ships were used to discover new land in Pacific and going up and down the coast of California, very very interesting! You have to go here. We were a few hours going through all three ships, the steam boat and the submarine. If you don't get to go through all of them, they are really kind and will time stamp your receipt, so you can come back on another day during your trip to finish. I highly recommend this! Also park at the pier by the MIDWAY. It's only 10 dollars for 12 hours, whereas other parking is more money for less time.

It is a beautiful museum featuring sailing and seamanship history: beautiful replicas and original ships, boats, and submarines. I’d say we had the best time in San Diego while visiting this museum. My eighth years' old son liked it a lot. Remember to bring sunscreen, hats or caps, and lots of questions to the volunteers and the museum crew.

  • 5/5 Andrea O. 2 years ago on Google
What a great place to check out with so much to see! Lots and lots of history to tour. I wish I would've added on the boat tour, maybe next time;)

  • 5/5 Johana L. 2 years ago on Google
This place is unbelievable! I loved being inside the submarine. I got that checked off my bucket list. My kids loved this experience and the history documented within.

If you're visiting the San Diego Harbor I highly recommend the Maritime Museum with the addition of the PT Naval Swift Boat. The Swift boat takes you further into the harbor for 90 minutes where the shipyards are and you get a history of each ship as you pass them. My BF and I had SO MUCH FUN, as the crew told their Vietnam stories and interacted with us. This tour is the best deal on the harbor as far as boat tours, in my opinion. Note: The Swift Boat only runs on weekends and sells out fast- buy in advance. You cannot purchase tickets separately- must buy museum ticket + the swift boat tour.

swift boat tour was AWESOME! thanks to the vets who gave us their time. It was an amazing experience and super affordable. The Star of India portion was one of my favorite things of San Diego It was so interesting and the whole place was laid out so well. If you have little kids make sure to go to the very bottom floor. everything about this place is great and can't wait to come back. there was so much to see.. could easily spend many hours. My kids loved running around and checking everything out. A lot of variety.

My family had a wonderful time at the Maritime Museum. Not too many people, lots of interesting facts, maps, models, stories, and more. We saw the Star of India, the S.S. Dolphin, and a few others. The H.M.S. Surprise was unfortunately closed for repairs, but we still greatly enjoyed our visit!

  • 4/5 surgioramon 2 years ago on Google
The Maritime Museum was a great place to spend a couple hours with some good friends. You get to step on historical vessels at every level: a pirate ship used on pirates of the caribbean, a submarine, and more. Each vessel is staged with props and information.

Great museum to learn history and spend the afternoon! I definitely recommended the 45 min tour on their awesome historical 80 yr. Old boat! We had a great tour guide and spend 45 minutes on the San diego bay

So many amazing ships to explore. I had such a wonderful time, the workers are all so nice, and all of the vessels are taken very good care of. If you're visiting, or just never been and want to see some really cool things definitely go.

As a history lover, this was the stop I enjoyed the most. I spent about 4 hours here looking around and reading everything. Everyone there was so welcoming and interested in what they were teaching. I highly recommend if you love history, and old boats. So glad they could restore these amazing vessels.

The funny part is that you have a few boats and a submarine to look! At all, the experience is good. I went there after the USS Midway, well its not easy to be impressed after that... Staff is super friendly 👌
