Not so secret anymore, you can reach the summit after climbing 245 steps. These stairs used to serve as major public thoroughfares. Very few of these public stairways exist in San Diego so definitely worth a climb at least once if you’re not a regular. There are breaks where you cross streets to continue your ascent so it can be done at your own pace; nothing is too slow or too fast. I recommend just looking up “La Mesa Secret Stairs” since there are a few different routes to take. I also recommend parking at Highwood Park located at 4200 Parks Ave., La Mesa, CA 91941 as the streets are narrow and mostly residential parking. Nice houses to look at on the short walk up to the first set of steps. La Mesa gets pretty hot in the summer so go early or later to avoid the heat. Shade is minimal. Finally, these stairs are located amongst houses but they are PUBLIC access ways so they do not have specific operating hours. I do not know why Google continues to deny my fact checking. There are very specific hours listed...based on what code or ordinance? I couldn't find anything because they are public, just as any other sidewalk. Can you not walk around your neighborhood on Saturdays and Sundays? They are accessible 24/7. Obviously, exercise your own judgement and be courteous about being out there but keep in mind that I (and many others I walk with) have never seen any posted hours of operation such as those signs you will find in actual parks.

I love little hidden spots like this! Just a bunch of stairs in the middle of a neighborhood. Great for a workout outside enjoying the views! I'm not sure how many stairs but enough. It's really beautiful and peaceful and the views are great. Just be respectful cause it is right in the middle of people's homes.

Visiting some friends and did some up hill cardio. Good mini workout if you're from the area. Not to steep and good break areas in between.

The stairs are Awesome. A great work out and very peaceful in the morning. If you looking to watch a sunrise u can not see that from the stairs u will have to drive around on the neighboring streets. If u want a sunrise My Helix has a better View.

SECRET STAIRS THAT ARE PUBLIC I was introduced to the secret stairs history and all of the secret terraces on Meet Up (Saturday Morning Weekly Hike-La Mesa's Secret Stairs!). I hope you support the group). THE ENCHANTED TREE Totally worth 60 minutes at the beginning your day. Then to top the icing on the cake you'll be enchanted by The Enchanted Tree.  On the Meet Up you will learn historical tips about the stairs and the community. MOST GOALS CAN BE ACHIEVED 1000 steps, and I kept thinking, "That's how we reach our goals. One step at a time." I'm on step 222. Or 22. You got me step 2. But at least I'm stepping forward. DO I NEED A DEFILIBRATOR? It's more of a walk rather than a workout though your heart rate increases. You can stay after the Meet Up and complete your own workout, which will likely be rigorous. I would totally make this a stop for nonlocals visiting. You could seriously wear leisure clothes like jeans or workout wear. Actually, after the secret stairs I went to 24 hour and had an invigorating barbell session. I wore Doc Martens and that was suffice. Captipating views of the sky, the aweness of individual homes, landscapes, and land structures.  It was sort of like walking in nature.  Respect the residents-please. “I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” — Jimmy Dean #juken123 #onestepatatime #secretstairsthatarepublic #alternativetonature #respecttheresidents #theenchantedtree

Great place for a workout or to tire out the kids. The downhill walk affords lots of pretty views of the county, especially around sunset or at night.
