On 12/9/2021, I Was in the ER for 12 hours in regards to severe symptoms of pain, nausea, vomiting, and being unable to eat anything following a C-section preformed at this hospital. They did not come into the room for the first 6 hours, and provided an extreme lack of standard of care. They refused to let my partner in who helps ensure that everything is completed. After 12 hours and a variety of tests including blood tests, CT scans, and ultrasounds, they said that it was just inflammation and recommended small amounts of food and discharged me. A day later, they seem to have “forgotten” to run the CT scan, or read it, and got new results of a peptic ulcer with a bulb. These results were sent to me through my MyChart account on 12/10/2021 (a day after I was discharged), and if I had not seen these, I would never have known of this diagnosis as they did not call to inform of this new, severe, diagnosis. Today, 12/11/2021- I called the ER to ask why these were not run while I was there for 12 hours, (should have been plenty of time), and why there were not communicated when they were run. The ER would not allow me to speak with a doctor, just a nurse who said they there was nothing they could do but recommend that I go see my primary care physician or come into the ER again and take all the tests again. I am still extremely sick and unable to eat, have a newborn baby that I need to care for, and am trying to seek the care that I need that they did not provide me. I am extremely disappointed in this terrible standard of care.

The worst ER experience ever! It felt like something out of a war zone. A woman was lying on the waiting room floor in the fetal position screaming with pain for more than two hours. The nurses and staff couldn't care less. Inside the ER, sick people in gurneys were lined up in the corridor. This is a teaching emergency department with residents who have skill limitations. The residents I saw had no idea what they were doing. You will not find high-quality care here. I'm surprised The Medical Board of California is not addressing issues that can potentially lead to errors in patient care.

One would expect quality care at UCSD La Jolla but not in the emergency department the nurses at the station are extremely unprofessional blabbering about their personal lives and complaining loudly about the patients showing no empathy for their anxiety around a growing health concern while dealing with an ER overflow all hallways are over crowded with patients they won’t just refer to other local hospitals greed over the wellbeing of patients is in question here. Shame on such a well funded department with poor training in patient care.

we were in the ER for over eleven hours, we didn’t even have a room but sat on a gurney in the hallway. the wait times for machines like mri are abysmal.

My husband came in for APPENDICITIS and first we waited for 4 hours to go in. He was throwing up, crying, begging for pain meds multiple times only to see the front desk guy roll his eyes. After multiple people in line just gave up and left we finally got in. Appendicitis doesn’t get you a room. We were in a hallway on disgusting old “bed” cramped with others. He was begging for meds again and it took an hour to get them. An hour later he went for CT scan. And he finally got his appendix removed 14 hours total after coming to the hospital. You know something even crazier? The second he woke up from the surgery the nurse said “who’s picking you up? We’re releasing you. Take Advil and Tylenol and feel better!”. In an hour we were home. My husband couldn’t sleep for 3 days because of pain. We had to see his primary just to get stronger meds so he could sleep. I’m disgusted by this freaking place. A week later he’s in pain. We went to scrips and I couldn’t believe that they walked us to our room right away and got him IV, meds, CT scan, all within the first 40 minutes. I didn’t even know that was possible because I’ve only been to UChealth maybe 7 times and they were all nothing but awful and inhumane. Scrips is very comfortable, super fast, and people are nice and helpful. Please don’t waste your time and energy going to UC health.

THE ER IS HORRIBLE!! I feel like they don’t care about the patients at least me! I went in yesterday 8/25 at 10:30 pm. I am 15 weeks pregnant I went in because I was bleeding and cramping. I spoke to a nurse over the phone from my insurance and she recommended for me to go to the ER ASAP, so I did. Once in the ER I got triage right away had some blood drawn and urine in a cup for them. 5 hours after I’m called again to the triage to get me vitals at that point I was tired, still in a lot of pain, irritated. I was if there was an order for an ultrasound my main priority was/is my baby. I was told there was no order for an ultrasound that they were going to order one that was at 4 am. 5 o’clock came and I decided to leave so I asked for a nurse to get the needle out so I could leave, of course they took their sweet time to come. They took me to the back and I FINALLY saw a doctor, he told me some things about me leaving before being seen and discharged. I felt like they didn’t take my situation as a priority. I left the ER after 7 hrs of waiting and I don’t know if my baby is ok or not! SHAME ON YOU UCSD ER! You guys used to be GREAT at one point. Now you SUCK!! I hope you get better and take the patient’s priority more serious! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ER unless you want to wait for hours!

How do you take a patient with a fever and stick them outside for hours like an animal? I was shivering outside while I wait for them to rule out covid. I understand there busy. Why couldn't the nurse swab me while they took my temp? This is discrimination. The nurse gave me a dirty look when he realized I'm unvaccinated for Covid. I wish I could leave 0 stars.

ER physicians wholly incompetent. Went in May 2021 and June 2022. Both instances were emergencies and warranted admission but I was falsely reassured. Although testing showed findings with absolutely emergent findings that explained my symptoms. They simply dismissed. They truly just literally saw what was wrong. I mean. They actually had objective findings that emergent treatment and actual admission and further testing was warranted at that time. As they did in May 2021. And they sent me home. Because they simply did not want to admit me or investigate. They ignored it, minimized it, shrugged it off and sent me home. Rather than doing what was right. There is no way I shouldn’t have been admitted. This significantly delayed emergent care that was warranted and created an even more dangerous situation while I awaited care (Which included waiting WEEKS to get in for testing…although ordered “STAT” through primary care provider when I finally got in to see them)….that testing and subsequent treatment should have been initiated within hours. And note that issue could have at any day or time become extremely dangerous again. And the second time in June 2022 after my illness had progressed to an even more dire situation, diagnostic testing should not have taken a month and a half due to the ER discharging me, further testing should have occurred that night or within a day to two at the latest. While being monitored. There is no other ER that wouldn’t have admitted me. I absolutely should have gone to the VA instead. But I trusted UCSD. I trusted what they said when they minimized my symptoms and findings. They literally said nothing about those very abnormal and alarming findings from May 2021. They didn’t even do any type of inquiry as to why I presented to the ER again in June due to that illness I didn’t know I had June 2022. This will forever adversely affect my life and very very likely my prognosis and this incompetency could have very easily resulted in dire consequences in the mean time. (but their absolute dereliction of duty only resulted in extreme prolonged suffering and rapid progression of my illness instead) I don’t know how things might be different had I received appropriate and emergent treatment when I sought that. But my situation is not good at all at this point. It didn’t have to be this way. Edited to add, I called the number from the canned text message below to talk to a “dedicated experience specialists” to see what they could do to make it right (per their request in the comment below mine) and they didn’t answer the call and never called me back after I left a detailed message. More. I have a wonderful team now at UCSD but had I been properly cared for in the ER starting in March 2021 or even my most recent visit things may not be so dire now. All they had to do was admit me or get the testing done I needed. They didn’t and this unnecessarily prolonged treatment that was urgently needed.

ER wait is very long at this location. Prepare to be here at minimum of 10 hours, but once you are in back the staff is attentive so I will give them credit where credit is due. I was in the waiting room for 5.5 hours for an ectopic pregnancy complication, however once I was in back I was cared for in decent time. I do think the wait in the waiting room is directly correlated with how long discharge takes. I was in my ER room for roughly 3 hours after my procedure was finished. I could’ve been discharged sooner and another patient take my room. Just want this to be noted for staff so they can discharge at a more timely manner to get the wait for patients to get seen quicker. I am thankful for my doctors and nurses who attended to me.

Went in with a failing VP shunt and massive head pain, I begged the nurse and the Dr to check my valve in my brain and they declined, they said it's visible thru the CT (which is not true for all shunts). The device to check my valve in my head not only takes less time than a CT, it doesnt cost thousands. Even still in extreme pain and confusion, they discharged me. 6 hours later I ended up at Grossmont ER, where they also did CTs but actually admitted me and used the device. They found I was right, the Shunt is completely malfunctioning. This can lead to stroke. The fact that this hospital didn't take the time to check the valve when I was asking them to (especially when they specialize in this field), especially because with this device they would have seen instantly it was malfunctioning and instead of discharging me, maybe they would have helped me. The lack of CARE, the lack of RESPECT, the lack Medical Help. I was so excited to finally switch providers and go here. What a disappointment. I'm sure not the whole staff is like that but the Dr and the Nurse who discharged me, should not be working in an industry if they don't want to help people or listen

Being referred to an experience specialist doesn’t seem to make a difference. I read the same terrible reviews over the course of several years and they reflect the same terrible experience that I had my two times in the ED in the past couple of years. I filled out review forms regarding my experience. I also filed a written complaint about a nurse in the ER and asked for a callback and never heard from anyone. I love all the doctors and nurses in their private offices and the support services. But when it comes to emergency room treatment and care, I would rather die than subject myself to that experience again.

Avoid the emergency department here at all cost, they don’t have the capacity to serve you “unless you’re dying” even if you’re brought in my ambulance and EMT. Even the EMT team was disappointed by their “triage” of care. This is why women of color avoid asking for medical attention and help, cause it’s not urgent enough unless you’re dying. What happened to preventative care? Go to SHARP when the ambulance asks!

Horrible wait. They won't give me water yet I've been waiting for 3 hours. While I was waiting to be seen in my hallway bed (right behind by the registration desk), a woman approached the reception window and said that she had been called back in shortly after she left the ER. As she was escorted into the ER through the locked door, a nurse or aide said to her, "Well, we know why you're having symptoms, you have COVID." She literally blurted this out in the hallway in front of 12-15 people. Unbelievable.

Daniel R., the “billing specialist” is rude and extorts money out of uninsured people. Tried to call about a bill I owed while uninsured. He offered a 15% discount off the bill, refused to provide me an itemized bill (which appears to be in violation of 20 CFR Sec. 30.701), and refused to let me speak with someone else. I asked for something in writing confirming that I would be receiving the discount, so I could pay the bill and know it was paid in full, and Daniel said no. I was told that a discount was just a courtesy, and I had to pay the amount mentioned, then they would see the amount posted, THEN would apply a discount. He confirmed that I had to pay the amount and hope that they would honor the discount being applied with ZERO confirmation it would actually happen. That at any moment, he could decide to turn around and still require I pay the balance. Thousands of dollars for a doctor to give me ibuprofen when an ovarian cyst ruptured. Daniel R is not a specialist or even a decent human being. My heart goes out to anyone forced into an emergency situation where this medical group is your only choice.

Horrible experiences! High fever, wheezing, and chest tightness and pain. Told 2 go 2 UCSD LaJolla ER. I was neglected. My call bell went unanswered. The nurse prioritized me as low level care because I just had flu. Had CT of ABD. Stated I had appendices. My appendix was removed in 1985. They sent me home wheezing, congested, and truly hurt feelings that I wasn't worth the time or energy. I'm still wheezing, coughing. Chest pains. Now my MD want me to go back there. I'm afraid they are upset because I complained and will harm me. 😔

The doctors and nurses do not communicate with each other and you get asked the same questions by multiple people. They don’t communicate well with the patients either. Can I take an IV out? Prob be faster then the staff here.

I had to take my mom to the emergency room here. There was staff right at the door entrance to take care of us even before going up to the receptionist. We went at around 5:00 AM on a Sunday and there was virtually no line in the waiting room. After the triage nurses took vitals, we were immediately given a bed. The doctor we had took good care of us, and we were even provided a Vietnamese translator through Zoom on a tablet. We were in and out of there within 3 hours. Speedy service and top notch care.

Insanely long wait & when they brought me back I didn’t get a room and instead had to sit in a chair in a bright loud room with a concussion. Eventually they moved me to a bed that was in the hallway. The doctor didn’t even come to talk to me about my test results before I was discharged

I went into the UCSD ER with high blood pressure. Everyone from the receptionist, triage, MD, and nurse were friendly and helpful. I appreciated it especially as I was not feeling well. Kudos to the staff at UCSD ER.

The staff here are great at calling, scheduling you an appointment, they also make sure to send you the forms via email and they also let you know to be on time for your appointment. I took the Trolley from Nobel I was here at 7:55 my appointment wasn't until 9:00, I was checked in downstairs in admissions the lady was very professional and nice, she even showed me how to get to where I needed to go upstairs. When I got upstairs I did a quick check-in and was told to have a seat and that someone would come to get me. I sat out in the waiting area 9:03 arrived I went to see what was going on a person came out to let me know that my nurse was behind she ask me for my completed form I gave them to her and she went by her way. It's now 9:40am nothing. How unprofessional I see why this place has a 2 star.
