Used to come here often for a meal and have always enjoyed my experience here. The food is fresh and tasty, and the service is down to earth. Recently tried their cakes and absolutely love them. Soft, fluffy and so delicious! The flavours are delicate and on point. A must try!

Decent Japanese food, certainly not bad but not particularly great either. Assorted shrimp tempura only had 2 pieces of shrimp and the rest were vegetables, there was no tempura dipping sauce either. The tempura was fried well though, they weren't soggy and the miso soup served with it was good. The strawberry shortcake was a bit dry, but the cream was nice and light. The matcha latte was good, there were options for milk type and sugar level as well.

🥭 mango shortcake 💚 pistachio strawberry croissant 🍓 matcha strawberry shortcake 🍵 matcha latte 🍰 strawberry shortcake 🏠: @chayo_melbourne 📍: 351 Clayton Road, Clayton 📝: Been to this cute Japanese cafe a few times already. They’ve got a selection of cute shortcake and bakeries as well as amazing Japanese drinks like 🖤 sesame and matcha! Still have yet to try their savories like 🍛 curry, 🥪 sando and 🍱 teishoku yet so I have to go back! ❤️: Never had a 🥭 Mango Shortcake before so this was exciting, but nothing beats a classic 🍵🍓 Matcha and Strawberry for me 🤭. The 💚🥐 Pistachio & Raspberry croissant was also yum, not too sweet with a little bit of tanginess.

Chayō is one of our favourite cafes in Clayton for matcha and lunch! They also offer delicious Japanese shortcakes and great chips. The place can get quite busy during the day so we’d recommend making a booking if you’re going as a group. Staff were also friendly and polite.

Their matcha strawberry cake tasted heavenly. It was sooo light and fluffy. Their frozen matcha chocolate drink was delicious too. I will definitely come again and try more items on their menu.

I came by in the middle of covid a few months ago. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. The food was tasty with plenty of vegan 🌱 options. It is a well presented place, it was really clean and bright with indoor and outdoor seating. My partner is a fussy Japanese and he LOVED it too, I Will definitely visit again 💕💕

Friendly attentive staff, they seemed to be low staffed so not all tables were cleared but I can see they’re doing their best. The layout is kinda strange, and the outside seating was weird it’s outside another shop. The way it’s placed isn’t the best, it’s right outside a bus stop so you’re constantly getting the noise of buses and getting gassed by the fumes. (Maybe it’s normal I’m not sure I’m not a melbournian) but we ended up going inside. Its pretty cool how there’s QR codes on the tables and you order on your phone. The food is delicious. Miso is really good. Karaage chicken is really good everything came hot and is fresh ingredients. Good portion size. Really fast service. Iced Matcha is delicious and had options of milks and you could pick the sugar amount. Strawberry shortcake is really yum too. Worth the drive! I’ll definitely be back to try more!

I pre-ordered the strawberry shortcake. Was so happy with the service. Also the presentation of the cake was beautiful and tasted fantastic. Made fresh with fluffy sponge, cream and strawberries. Was not sickly sweet, just right. Would definitely recommend. A great birthday cake that my family really enjoyed ❤❤❤

I have tried lots of matcha food in my first visit. The matcha taste overall is well balanced and the sweetness of desert is just perfect for Asian tastebuds. The matcha strawberry cake can be much better if Japanese low gluten flour can be used, though I know that it may be rather expensive.

A good place to eat in peace. A cafe and a restaurant in one. Easy and quick to read menu. Variety of things to eat. Open kitchen so preparation can see seen. Hygiene is maintained. Very friendly staff with smiles. I ordered karaage friend chicken curry with rice and salad. Portion is good for a person. A little pricey for me as it was $17 for 3 pieces of fried chicken, a poached Egg, small serve of salad and rice but good for the quality. Mildly spiced. The curry was more like gravy. Overall, it so RECOMMENDED if you want to have a balanced meal in a small space with very less people around you. Thumbs up for the staff.

I was looking forward to lunch at Chayō but was sadly disappointed in the end. We ordered two dishes and waited just under an hour for them to reach the table. Taste was average, definitely not worth an hour's wait, and they forgot to put dressing on the salad. Luckily they don't enforce the one hour limit for table reservations or we wouldn't have had time to eat at all!

Really good Udon, hearty and light. Definitely use fresh prawn for sure, large and juicy. Good place to bring your Dog too, they let us have our meal outdoors to accommodate us. Friendly staff, not much more you could ask for!

Tempura - crispy, flavourful, batter is on the slightly denser side. Salmon sashimi - fresh, decent quality. Udon - springy, cooked well. Good texture. Takoyaki - decent but nothing particularly special.

It's an incredibly nice place, proper Japanese even with the Japanese door. Delightful staff. Delicious tea. The nasuden miso eggplant isn't really grilled, it felt more like boiled so isn't quite what I was hoping for, but otherwise a perfect cafe.

Place to go to if you craving authentic Japanese food or cake. It's always packed so sometimes it's hard to get a table. You can have a proper meal, just light snacks or just coffee and cake. They can provide it all. Will be keep coming back

Really tasty and delicious Japanese food, we came for dinner and loved eveything we had! Will definitely be back again. Highlight recommended the sashimi as the fish was very fresh. The curry risotto was delightful but my favourite dish this night was the chicken karage with matcha salt! The chicken was very juicy and super crispy with a delicious hint of yuzu which made us order it twice! My only suggestion would be to order rice or udon on the side so you have something a little more substantial to keep you feeling full. We also ordered the udon which was very tasty, perfectly cooked noodles and very crunchy tempura. It was so yummy I forgot to snap a picture.

Stop by for lunch on weekdays. The baked curry pork chop is very nice. And the matcha espresso is good mixed of matcha and coffee. Will surely go back again!

A big call, but one of the best matcha lattes I've had in Melbourne. The sesame latte was equally delicious! Highly recommend

A little cafe full of charm. We had teishoku and udon, karaage chicken, tempura and teriyaki salmon. Tried the matcha choco latte and hojicha latte. Food is good quality and and the drinks are fantastic. Then a slice of matcha azuki cake. Cake was yummy but a little dear. And it’s so good that I can have the whole cake again. Would go back again.

Enjoyed a lovely meal. Served up promptly and was delicious. Loved the cup and saucer my coffee was served in, was a decent size. The meals looked beautiful too. My only negative is the qr code to see menu and order, but thats a pet hate of mine. 😊 the matcha was one of the best my daughter has ever had.

A cafe with an elegant Japanese touched. Great service and excellent coffee. Loved it.

Ordered Nasuden grilled miso eggplant with rice and miso soup. .It had excessive soy sauce, making the dish overwhelmingly salty, almost causing a vomiting sensation. Feels like I have wasted my money and time. Sharing this feedback in the hope it contributes to an improved experience for others. Looking forward to better experiences in the future.

I had katsu curry ($20) it was nice and colourful the chicken was also crispy for the price paid it was ok. Iced chocolate wasn't that nice it was a little watery in my opinion. Strawberry short cake ($10) was really nice fluffy and not too sweet still I would say price wise it's a tad pricy but still I recommend it. The store sometimes smells like fish since they also serve dishes with fish so if you are sensitive to the smell I recommend getting a seat outdoors.

Decent matcha latte and houjicha latte, ogura toast was amazing! A pleasant balance of fresh cream, butter, red bean paste and matcha powder. Love the atmosphere too, ghibli jazz was playing in the background when I came. First time I visited was a Monday morning so it was quiet and chill, visited again on a Sunday afternoon and the place was packed! Understandable as the food and drinks are pretty nice. Definitely would visit again.

The salmon was cooked very well, and the flavours are very nice. The cakes and tarts are all very delicious but slightly pricey.

After recently moving to the Clayton area, I was eager to check out Chayo Japanese cafe. Four of us came here for lunch on a Sunday around midday. Despite being very busy and bustling, the cafe still provided very fast service. We ordered the matcha cake, mango cake, matcha iced tea, rice and fried chicken, and vegetable tempura. Thank you for the wonderful service and delicious food; I will definitely be coming here more often!

Date/time of visit: 6 September 2022, 1:50pm Lovely venue (dining area). Good menu at great prices (some people might consider the menu to be limited but I was very happy with the options). Decent serving sizes with wonderful authentic flavours. Beautiful, refreshing desserts (cakes). Ordering and paying for food was via scanning a QR code. This did not work for us (wouldn"t load the webpage due to it not being secure). Fortunately they do have printed menus and you can order and pay at the counter. Highly recommended.

Good portion, flavoursome. Ordering a set ensures a complete meal and this one I will highly recommend. Chicken is also lean with salad not slathered in dressing. They also make good lattes at Chayo. Would have lunch here whenever in Clayton.

Matcha drinks are consistently among the best anywhere. Beer-battered chips changed for the worse lately, a few times I was served plain chips for same price. Outdoor tables are usable again, as Spring is here

Delicious food and even on the pricey side it is well worth it. I had the burger and the chicken was fried to perfection and was tender and the spicy Mayo really complemented the chicken. The bun was soft. The takoyaki was very well made and drenched in sauce which made it even better, outside was crispy. Lotus root chips were very crunchy and tasted wonderful. The tempura that came with the udon was delicious and fried to golden. Very high quality. Left me wanting more. Highly recommend this place.

These guys are not messing around with their coffee - and their oat milk doesn’t disappoint either! Might I add, their katsu Sando is the best I’ve had in Melb. Everything I’ve tried on the menu was amazing here I was blown away.

Great little spot in Clayton for Japanese flavours. The Ebi Tempura was excellent and so was the hot and spicy kaarage chicken (and warning it IS spicy). Add on Asasi Dry on tap for a great lunch.

I ordered a soy milk matcha with NO ice (the register display said no ice too when I paid for my drinks). I got my drink and there was ice in it so I told them that I ordered it with no ice. I thought they were going to remove the ice or at least remake the drink. Instead they added soy milk into a new cup and just strained the iced drink into the new cup. The iced drink already had milk in it so if you add it into a cup with milk it’s obviously going to taste more milky?? It was just adding even more milk into the drink. I could barely even taste the matcha, all i tasted was soy milk because the ratio was 2:1. Basically paid $9 for a cup of milk.
