Came here after 4 years on January 2022 and it was not like I remembered. I specifically came for the sushi cake which they are famous for and they said it’s only for take away! I had also noticed that they have sort of rebranded it to a much more fancy up market fine dining restaurant in a new location. Food was delicious but serving sizes were tiny. Not made for sharing. We came for dinner with a party of 5. It was just 100 dollars a head (not including drinks) but none of us left feeling full! The steak and cod were priced at 50 each see pics! Great place for a fancy date for two but prepare to splurge.

This is now my new favourite Japanese restaurant. The quality, service, and the overall atmosphere truly stood out. We averaged around $200pp for their a la carte, and I would gladly spend the same amount again without hesitation. To begin with, the sushi was presented beautifully. The quality was outstanding, and they spared no effort in sourcing the finest varieties of fish. The gyoza and tataki were amazing starters, being both delicate and bursting with flavour. You could tell they made the gyoza all in house, even the wrapper. The chawanmushi with foie gras was absolutely delightful. They were incredibly generous with the foie gras, and while it might be considered rich by some, I was over the moon with this. In the main course, the standout dish was the mussels zosui. The rice was gently cooked in a scampi and mussel broth, emitting an enticing fragrance as it arrived at the table. The scampi and mussel flavours infused the rice with their sweetness. This is a must-try for anyone visiting this place. The striploin was prepared beautifully, with a perfect charcoal finish from the josper grill. We also decided to add tempura to our meal, since we had room to spare. The tempura had an incredibly light and crispy batter. As for desserts, they were impeccable. They were beautifully presented and had the right balance of sweetness. The creme brulee was particularly unique; instead of a traditional brulee, it featured a caramel-coated shokupan that mimicked the crust of a creme brulee. Overall, our dining experience was exceptional, and we highly recommend this place if you haven't visited already or if you're looking for a special occasion spot! I’m keen to try out their omakase next!

This was one of my favorite meals here in Melbourne! The restaurant is spacious and decor is so aesthetically pleasing and simple. I had the two tier bento and chose the dry-aged striploin for the protein. The striploin was tender and had a beautiful char on it, the scallop was really fresh and juicy, and the wagyu tataki was wonderful! The service was really lovely and the cherry on top was the birthday dessert with candle for my friend. Highly recommend Komeyui, will be back again!

Decided to book this place for my boyfriends birthday and they definitely did not disappoint!!! Food and customer service was immaculate! The server who served me tonight was super sweet! She definitely made tonight very special for us. The food was phenomenal… all of the meats and sashimi would just melt into my mouth. Love it!

I came here for Omakase for the first time. THIS IS UNREAL!! I had chef Taan with me for tonight and he was incredibly amazing! You can request the chef as well if you wish to experience this amazing meal. His idea of using his knowledge from 12 years of experience from various cusine and adapt it to each dish is brilliant! I was very impressed and felt like I got what I paid for. I will leave it up to you to dream about how scrumptious the food is until you come and try this yourself. Marina was very good for the service and great attention to detail as well. VERY WELL DONE!! I can't wait to come back here 😊😊😊

Good option for your date. Their atmosphere was decent enough. Feels like having dinner in the middle of Tokyo or Osaka. Tables, opened kitchen and how they serve was fine. It was really pleasant. But there were some lacking points. They should’ve provided small personal plate for sushi right in front of the customers. I did have one little leaf shaped plate but there was cloth on it, so I didn’t want to put my sushi on there. In terms of foods quality, it was not bad. But not that special. Of course it was worth it but when you think about the price of it, it should be better than that. But Yuzu sorbet was very good.

Very fancy and skillfully executed modern fine dining Japanese. The staff were great, super friendly and the food was top notch. The feel and design of the restaurant is modern, classy and relaxed. Got a bit of a shock by the automated Japanese toilets but it was quirky and fun.

I am on the moon ~ The food and the customer service is top notch. I can not speak highly enough, every single dish that came out really impress us. Food is good and fresh, nice ambience, great service, is so worth it. This is my 2nd time here to celebrate my wife's birthday. Coming back here again without a doubt. Thank you Komeyui team, chef and waitresses. Thank you for your great work and we absolutely have a pleasant dinner. Well done :)

There was a little mix up with our booking, but the staff was very apologetic and kept apologizing. The food tasted amazing. We had the sashimi and sushi platter. The fish was fresh and was sliced well. Then we had the prawn roll followed by the soft shell crab roll. The prawn and crab were crispy and tasty. The restaurant itself looked very modern and the staff were very polite and helpful. We would visit this joint again and would be keen to sit at the counter to watch how the chefs work.

The food was outstanding and the black cod was even life-changing. You can taste the high quality produce/ingredients and our meals were expertly prepared. I remember being impressed by the smaller details down to the sauces/garnishes that were complementary to the main. The team are so creative! I also want to highlight that our server, Marina, was so incredibly lovely. Highly recommend for a date or a special occasion.

Very good Japanese food. Fresh ingredients used to prepare all the dishes. Personally prefer my pork belly to be softer so that it can melts in my mouth. The sauce is too salty to be consumed without rice. That can be improved. Rest of the dishes I had, are amazing.

Delicious and fresh Japanese food with a calm ambience setting. Sashimi is so fresh and a must try is the foie gras chawanmushi (steamed egg). Have been here twice already and will keep coming back here 🤩

Definitely recommend for a special occasion! We had the Omakase a while ago and the food was probably the best food we’d ever had. The presentation was amazing and service was so friendly. We even got given a complimentary dessert because it was a special occasion. There was a lot of fresh seafood and the whole experience felt special and made the cost feel worth it. Definitely left feeling full and satisfied, and our chef was super friendly too. 10/10 experience.

Great food and ambience. The staff was excellent with good service. Really fresh ingredients and the icecream had amazing texture and flavour as well. Good for a special occasion ( had the omakase) as it is on the pricey end of dining, however not 100% sure it’s worth its price in terms of value as it wasn’t really that filling, ended up getting some food again later in the night.

We booked Komeyui for a celebratory dinner and it didn't disappoint! This is our third time at Komeyui and by far our best (and tastiest) experience, which was all due to our amazing chef Taan. His attention to detail, sushi knowledge and overall customer service was second to none. The nigiri sushi was amazing, with the chutoro, scampi (and that prawn oil!) and swordfish being particular highlights. Thank you very much Taan, you made us feel like we were back in Japan and can't wait to come back!

Dined here for the autumn sushi omakase which is only available for counter seating. It consists of eight courses including 10 nigiri sushi prepared and served one at a time. Each piece of sushi had a different sauce and/or topping added; creating a unique flavour experience without overpowering the freshness of the fish; definitely the highlight of the omakase. The service from chef Taan was exceptional as he explains in detail each piece of sushi he serve as well as asking for feedback. He also went to check with the kitchen when he noticed that I have been waiting for a long while for the dessert which I appreciate. The other dishes were good however nothing stood out making me want more of. For the price tag, I was expecting more but unfortunately the dishes were dull in comparison to the sushi. Hopefully the future seasonal dishes will be better.

Food was good but bit more expensive comparatively to other Omakase. What rubbed us the wrong way was the 10% weekend surcharge. At prices like this that just leaves a sour taste in your mouth Had a nice time but won’t be back

I surprised my partner with a birthday dinner at this Japanese restaurant and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. The staff was incredibly polite and provided top-notch service. The food was simply outstanding - you could really taste the freshness of the ingredients and the passion that the chef put into every dish. Watching the chef prepare the sushi was mesmerizing, and our chef (I believe his name was Taang) was very friendly and personable. We even shared a good laugh over one of the fish that sounded Italian. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience. To top it all off, the restaurant surprised my partner with a little dessert with a candle.

We went to celebrate our anniversary early and as well as Valentine's day. We were surprised that they had a specific menu for Valentine's day and thoroughly enjoyed the omakase menu. The atmosphere was warm and the chefs were all really friendly and polite. It was a great experience sitting at the sushi bar. The servers were prompt at filling our glasses and reminding us the kitchen was closing for any final orders.

The atmosphere at this restaurant is calm and relaxing. The staff were welcoming and very professional. We enjoyed the Omakese Classic and the food was sublime. Our chef, Kai, was wonderful, thoughtfully advising the content of each course. We experienced the best Japanese food outside of Japan and will return soon.

Cannot fault the food. Cooked and presented to perfection. Cocktails were delicious. The environment felt a little minimalist but I guess that was the intent especially behind Japanese Design. It was comfortable and the Service was extremely attentive with warm wonderful smiles. Thank you for a wonderful culinary experience.

Incredible first time omakase experience at Komeyui! Chef Taan was amazing! Very friendly and even gave us some complimentary dishes! We’re up from the NT so we don’t have omakase at all! He made it such a special experience for us Territorians 😁 will definitely be back next time!

Delicious and beautifully served authentic Japanese food with wonderful and friendly service. If you are looking for 5 star food and service, this is the place to go! We took our two little ones (3 & 6 year olds) and while they didn’t fully appreciate the experience, they were treated wonderfully by the staff and we still had a great time. We look forward to coming back again soon. Thank you for your hospitality.

Highly recommend Komeyui for those wanting an amazing experience with great atmosphere and great service! We chose Komeyui for our work Christmas dinner for a group of 19 people and Koji and his team were very accommodating and responsive. He made the entire planning process very streamline and even gave his own recommendations on the menu. The food and atmosphere were 5/5 however the service from Koji and his team were 6/5. Would definitely come here again in the future!

Comfortable atmosphere and great food! Even when the restaurant is pretty full and energised, it wasn’t noisy. Service was lovely too - attentive but not intrusive. We went for lunch and got the shokado bento box set with sake flight - you must go on an empty stomach if you want to try both the upper and lower boxes together! The toothfish was exceptional

3 stars BUT Incredible Sushi So if the sushi is soooo good, why the 3 stars? Let me tell you why. Ordered edamame, chicken karage, and the matcha creme brulee. Edamame is okay if you are looking for no frills experience but I kinda wish they elevate edamame more. Chicken karage is good and tasty, the glaze is sweet and savoury but the batter is not crispy enough for my liking. The entire appetiser was okay but they delivered hard on Sushi! Let’s start with salmon nigiri sushi. The chef cut the salmon perfectly and the salmon belly piece is so good! It got bite, the rice is nice and the taste is good. Also ordered the Alfonsino, Kingfish, the beef sushi and Toro Sushi. The Toro sushi? Holy smokes! It is out of this world. The fat just melt in your mouth and it blends well with the rice taste. must try nigiri Last is the matcha creme brulee. Well I did not expect to be serve the way they serve it. If you like something new, you should try their take on creme brulee

My partner surprised me for my birthday and I was absolutely thrilled after experiencing the Omakase! It was truly a special night with outstanding food, delicious beverages, the warm and kind hostesses and wonderful chefs. I kept saying that I didn’t want to stop chewing each bite because then it would be over. Each dish is inventive, balanced and fresh. You won’t be disappointed!

Food is great, service is great. Been to the old place before and this new one is awesome, far better than the old place. One thing that could be improved is the pork belly, it was burnt. We would love to try the omakase experience in the future. Overall we would come be back here again.

Visited this Friday. Overall, taste and presentation was mediocre at best, service was ok, atmosphere is the only thing that reminds me that its a fine dining restaurant. I find that google review gives a more accurate picture than the so called hat system.

This is an amazing hidden treasure in South Melbourne. From the street, passers by would be unaware of the fine dining experience that awaits inside. Beautifully presented, delicate dishes are offered by friendly, professional staff. This place is well suited for that exclusive dining experience for that special friend.

Pros Food is delicious Venue is lovely The omakase chef was knowledgeable and attentive. Cons Service is not up to par for a fine dining restaurant The venue offers 5% off your bill when paying cash, but charge a 5% surcharge for purely dining in the restaurant (10% on a Sunday)

Omakase 8 courses $220 - Nori Tsukudani Oyster with Egg White Snow 🦪 - Kingfish Confit with Seaweed and Yuzu-ed Red Onion 🐟 - Pistachio Crusted Salmon with Fresh Truffle - Modern Mini Oden🍢 - Lobster with Miso-cured Egg yolk 🦞 - Chef's special selection nigini (10 piece) 🍣 - Winter Melon Chawanmushi with house-made Aged Scallop 🥚 - "Monaka" Matcha Terrine with Wild Beries - Matcha Latte 🍵 Perfect Japanese restaurant for a date night! I am impressed by their omakasa menu. The dishes were finely made with top quality ingredients. Started with the oyster, absolutely in love with the theatrical effect. The lobster sashimi was delicious. It had the perfect crunchy texture and a sweet aftertaste which balanced so well wif the miso egg yolk. The chawanmushi was my other fav. I love the idea of aged scallop. It legit dropped an umami bomb in my mouth. The pistachio salmon could be better if it has some sauce to bring the whole thing tgt. As for the dessert, not a big fan of the wafer they used and it was on the dry side. Perfectly cooked and seasoned sushi rice topped with the most divine seafood. Cannot fault most of the nigiris except the salmon caviar was too salty for my liking and the Bluefin tuna was overpowered by the ginger flavour. I can’t get over the scallop, sea eel, toro and scampi. They were absolutely delicious. Overall a lovely experience. However, considering the price increase from $180 (June) to $220 (July) and the surcharge from Tue to Sun, it put me off a bit from going back for the omakase. I would still love to try their a la carte menu tho cox their sushi is top notch. Chef's special selection nigini (10 piece) - Snapper - Ocean trout with White Truffle oil - Taipuka grouper cod - South Australian Kingfish - Soy marinated Bluefin tuna - New Zealand scampi with eggyolk salt - Toro with caviar - Soy marinated salmon caviar - Hokkaido scallop with Miso Foie Gras - Anago Sea Eel - Sweet egg roll

I think the photos speak louder than any words. Fantastic service and delicious food. If I have to pick something I don’t really like, it’ll probably be the decor 😝 a bit on the spacious and cool side (personally prefers small and cosy)

Perfectly packaged and presented Japanese takeaway. Probably the neatest takeaway I’ve ever eaten. Quality and attention to detail in every piece. Fresh ingredients, super delicious. Veg options too - the little picnic box had a great assortment. Highly recommend and can’t wait to dine in when lockdown ends.

I’ve been eating at Komeyui even before they move to a bigger place. And of course they never disappoint! Their new place is bigger and have an ellegance ambiance, compare to their warm and classic japanese styled restaurant in their previous venue. The food as always is AMAZING! Really loved the Ox tongue! They used to have a bigger portion but now they reduced the portion and the price too. All others are also delicious! Never a dull experience at KOMEYUI! Definitely one of the best Japanese Restaurant in Melbourne!

Went there for our anniversary and we really appreciate the free dessert from the staff. The service was great and attentive, but I was a little disappointed with the quality of a couple of the dishes. Overall still an awesome dining experience.

Great food for sure! I feel it’s worth the price you pay. The server was attentive to my needs as I was pregnant too thank you so much! Love the chawanmushi! Had the black code and wagyu too which is amazing! Ended with their matcha daifuku which is a blast! The only comment we had was the soft shell crab sushi roll we had. The rice was too soft and did not make the whole sushi roll experience perfect. We will be back for lunch menu or to try more stuff! Thank you

I have nothing bad to say, it’s just an awesome Omakase experience, I just wish the time frame can be a little longer. Food is absolutely amazing, the taste are unique for each course.

Food was good, but I was genuinely surprised by how small the portions were. I suppose this place is set up to be a rather fancy establishment but for the price I expected a bit more. If you're considering coming here, just be prepared to splurge and do order several dishes, otherwise you might leave feeling a bit unsatisfied.

Got the Unagi bento box for take away during lockdown. The front desk lady was kind for handing me a glass of warm matcha while waiting for my food. Unagi was tasty and melted in your mouth. The sides: potato salad, seaweed salad and the chicken karaage were also tasty. Keen to try other bento boxes.

Amazing quality ingredients!! We had Pean as our chef at the bar and their service and expertise was nothing short of immaculate. We were treated with kindness and the explanations about the ingredients we were consuming were so insightful and highly valued. Post Covid we haven’t been super impressed by everything served in a restaurant, but Komeyui came through and wowed us in every single bite. We came here for our birthday/valentines and already can’t wait to come back here for our anniversary— hoping to be served by Pean again. Thank you so so much for such a wonderful experience. *didn’t upload all photos of everything we ate because we ordered a bit more than what was on the omakase 😬 (well worth it 😮‍💨)
