Great spot to see the Monarch butterflies, though be prepared for a semi-difficult hike, especially if you’re not accustomed to the altitude. Alternatively you can take the horse ride up. Unfortunately the weather was too cold when I visited so the butterflies did not fly around or leave the clumps, but still cool to see! Food is also available at the small restaurant at the base.

(Translated by Google) Coming from CDMX, take the highway to Valle de Bravo and then take the freeway that goes through the Nevado. It has parking that costs $ 40 and some services. Access to the sanctuary costs $ 70 and if you wish you can go on horseback, the price per horse is $ 250 which includes the guide. The recommendation is to go early so that they can see the butterflies for as long as possible since when they begin to fill up they allow a few minutes and you cannot admire the detachments in detail. Another recommendation would be to go during the week when it is quieter. In general my experience was good, it is one of the places with fewer people and it is well cared for.

Monarch Butterfly! Great place for viewing. Knowledgeable guide. Steep climb. A real wonder to consider how these insects do what they do. Definitely worth a visit. Limited viewing time.

Seeing the butterflies was fantastic. However, it requires an hour long hike almost straight uphill on an incredibly dusty trail. You need to decide whether seeing the butterflies is worth the climb under those conditions. It was also very crowded on the trail.

(Translated by Google) I have to say that I was amazed by the natural phenomenon that the Monarch Butterflies give us. They do not distinguish between states, whether in Michoacan or Edo Mex, they come to take refuge without distinction. My recommendations are the following to have an unforgettable experience. Arrive early, they open at 9, you arrive at that time. Go quietly to eat some delicious quesadillas in that same place. Then get ready for the tour. To climb, wear comfortable shoes, be it a mountain boot or slip-resistant. Or a tennis shoe but keep in mind that the earth will get up to your toes. Don't worry, it's worth it. Take a minimum of half a liter of water. Although the place is very cool, the climb dehydrates you. You will find some very steep inclines and everything is uphill. From below you can rent a horse that will raise you at an extra cost. But if you start to feel bad about the height, it is better not to climb. First is your physical integrity. Also, you will not miss seeing the butterflies. They fly all over the forest. Once upstairs, please be quiet. We are invaders of their territory. And only our voice stuns them. Don't touch them. If they approach you, you can enjoy it. But its wings are delicate. Take care of them Butterflies peek out when the sun is out. And around 12 noon, you will see that they all descend. If you arrive early on the way up you will not see many, the return is the real show. You will not regret. Avoid going on cloudy days, you will not be able to see them fly. And I recommend you go in the middle of February and the first week of March. It is when they fly the most. I will be back in a few years. At least once in your life you have to live it. Llega temprano, abren a mas 9, tu llega a esa hora. No te arrepentirás. Evita ir en días nublados, no podrás verlas volar.

This is the most beautiful place I have ever been to. There were butterflies everywhere. We couldn’t go all the way to the top of the mountain because it was close to the public. But we were still able to see thousands of butterflies all over the place. Our guide was very friendly and informative. And she told us that the best time to see the butterflies is around noon and up, when it’s nice and sunny, that’s when the butterflies start flying. It took us about an hour to reach the point where we could watch the spectacle. And oh boy, I surely regretted not getting a horse. I’m in very good shape, however; going up the hill is super tough, I’m guessing because of the altitude, it was much tougher than I thought it was going to be. Wear comfortable shoes. And don’t forget to tip your guide.

This place is very cool, but they made us walk in a group with people of very different skill levels. 70 pesos per adult to get in; 200 to rent a horse that takes you only so far then you have to walk the rest. We walked the whole thing. A bit steep but doable. Also the butterflies might not be awake if you go too early depending on the weather and heat. I was excited to be able to warm life into some butterflies. We did not have great luck with our taxi driver. Through midcommunication we thought he wanted 500 total to drive roundtrip from Valle and wait 2 hours. Turns out he wanted 700. The drive back was the most amazing as we drove through swarms of butterflies!

Magnificent place to enjoy the monarch butterflies, parking costs 40mxn and the entry 70mxn by person. You can also enjoy some Mexican food like quesadillas after walking to the sanctuary, pets are allowed however they can not enter to the sanctuary.

It’s definitely worth the journey for this breath taking experience. I highly recommend the horses (hiking still necessary but decreases the time of the entire journey significantly). Trails are slippery in some sections but hiking shoes aren’t necessary. It can be quite busy but many opportunities exist for photos and videos. Cell reception essentially non-existent but live in the moment (and remain silent). Bathrooms have small fee.

Weekends during the peak season are VERY, VERY, VERY crowded. There will be tour buses. You will likely wait in line to enter the sanctuary and to see the butterflies, but you will see butterflies! The local guides told me that during the week it is very quiet. The hike is step, and the altitude will make it more challenging for some, but slow and steady wins the race. I saw people of all ages and fitness levels make it to the top (eventually). Bathroom at the start of the trail for a small fee. Horses looked very calm, and riding is a good option for kids and those who are not strong walkers/hikers. No horse riding experience necessary. On warm and sunny days, the butterflies fly around. On colder days, they stay in groups in the trees to keep warm. Take binoculars, water, and wear layers. Cary out your trash, stay on the trail, and enjoy the amazing migration. Photos taken with a telephoto lens.

We took horses up, which is worth it and recommended. The only negative was we waited in line at the top walking trail for over an hour. There had to be 200-300 people in line slowly moving up the trail to the one point where there are the most butterflies.

(Translated by Google) I went on February 7 and there were still several butterflies, they were even in the parking lot. The guide said that they can be seen until the second week of March, for me the number of butterflies sighted was enough, however a friend who had already gone told me that they can be seen as double. Adult admission is $ 70. If you want to go up on horseback $ 230 The climb is demanding at the beginning, approximately 800 meters, but afterwards it is calmer, that does take your boots ready to be super dirty.

A must see natural spectacle! The location itself is about 3/4 of a mile uphill from the parking area. Horseback riding is available--which is totally recommended for the elder and folks not yet acclimated to the altitude of central mexico. Unfortunately and due to human development in all of north america, year-after-year the population of Monarch Butterflies keeps declining. Thus, please be mindful of this phenomenon during your visit by keeping quiet and minimizing your impact on the environment.

Cool place to go if you're around Valle De Bravo. Having never been, I wasnt expecting a solid 45 minute steep hike to get to the butterflies. I was alright with it and enjoyed the nature but if someone was not in shape or is not accustomed to high elevations you could get sick easily. There is horse option if hiking is not your thing, but getting to the very top you'll still need to walk by foot on a steep incline for 10ish minutes. There were many kids there by the time we got to the butterflies. The kids were too loud screaming in excitement when there's signs that clearly say be quiet when here. There weren't many butterflies but I recognize it was also the time of year and it had rained the day before. Would definitely go again but better prepared with hiking type clothes.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful experience. If you are not in good physical condition, I recommend you go on horseback for $ 250mn it is about 3km uphill. Please be quiet 🙏 out of respect for nature and visitors who are making video. If you are lucky you will hear the fluttering of the butterflies as they take flight together from the cluster towards flooding your senses with pure peace. The environment is cool if you walk up preferably with heavy-duty shoes there is a lot of loose dirt. And help yourself with a rod to climb you will feel safer @ is a good support. Enjoy it. (Original) Hermosa experiencia.

End of trail depends on where the butterflies decide to land. So sometimes you get awesome views, other times it's terribly underwhelming. Nice hike though.

I visited Monarca mariposa 🦋 on 27 Feb and I got the tour group from Facebook Vaijas group. First of all if you have less stamina then I would say hire a horse as it’s steep slope over mountain. And when you reach at top you will see beautiful butterflies as per video below. Journey is vey beautiful as well. Please note there is no water, washroom, eatable options available in mountain journey so take everything from ground only. Horse cost 300 pesos one side. You can bargain may be. It is dusty so I would say take a mask or cloth to cover mouth. Overall it’s worth experience so be prepared and visit it

Yesterday, Sunday when we went, they told us that there were no longer monarch butterflies. I have been to this place before and it is a good place to see them. There is parking and guides. The cost to go up per person is $80 on foot and I think $300 going up on horseback.

Amazing! I highly recommend going on a weekday. We were able to stand and watch the butterflies at the top as long as we wanted (like 20 min). Our guide said on weekends there's usually a long line, and you can basically just take a photo then leave. We took the horses for 300mxn each, which was worth it.

It is a beautiful place for those who like to enjoy nature, unfortunately there were no longer live butterflies, due to climate change they emigrated and some died.

  • 2/5 Mindy J. 2 months ago on Google • 4 reviews New
BE WARNED: This hike is straight up for over an hour! It’s also very high altitude (over 10,000ft, I believe) So, you must be in amazing physical shape. I WISH someone would have told me because I definitely would have opted for the horse! You have to take a guide, but I would say they aren’t really “Guides” - just more leading the way and making sure everyone stays together, so not much information was given or interesting stops along the way …and ours only spoke Spanish. (which was fine, I’m just giving the information) Finally, the last 15 minutes is VERY steep and treacherous - some of our group members took some spills, so only 1/2 the group actually made it to the top. At the end, we were told that the best time to come is in December, lol. We went in early February, which I read was the best time to go and assumed we would be engulfed in butterflies, but really, there was just some flying around and some on a tree. Not sure if it was just the wrong time of year, climate change or what, but honestly, I wouldn’t say it was worth it unless you just want the exercise. Anyway, Overall take-a-way: Only go if you LOVE uphill hikes and are used to the altitude …and if not, for the love of god- TAKE THE HORSE!

A unique experience. Viewing monarch butterflies at the top of a mountain right before their Spring migration is a once in a lifetime experience. We went midweek accompanied by both our guide from Mexico City and a local guide. The first two thirds of the trail is easy to moderate through the woods. Very few other hikers perhaps a couple of dozen folks on horseback. All the way up the departing horseback riders appeared unhappy and even angry. The horses can go only so far and at some point you have to dismount and walk up the mountain. The butterflies move around from year to year and it was clear prodigious efforts had been made to lay down vertical trails up the mountain to get you as close as possible. Those trails are rough hewn, rocky and very dry and dusty approaching 45 in ascent. The Sierra Club would rate those ascent trails very difficult and strenuous. Coming down is a real challenge. Laying those trails down anew each year to get you as close to the butterflies as possible cannot be easy. Not for the faint of heart or inexperienced hiker. I cannot say enough about the local guides and the help they provided me in getting back to the trailhead. Mexico is to be applauded for these types of conservation efforts. Worthwhile if you are in the area to see the butterflies while they are nesting. I have never seen anything like it. Your entrance fee includes a guide (speaks Spanish) and the nature hike is refreshing. The first 30 minutes of the hike are the steepest, so take your time! Expect to spend 2-3 hours here depending on how fit you are and how long you are able to stay at the top. When we went, it was during the weekday and not many people were hiking so we were allowed to stay as long as we wanted. They also have horses to take you up part of the way if you can't handle the hike up, expect that it will cost around $50usd?

Although the butterflies themselves were pretty and a wonderful sight to see so many of them, the whole experience at this Nature Reserve wasn't that great. Way too many people, it felt like you were being herded around like cattle, and not like your experiencing nature like you would hope to in a nature reserve. There were far too many people in each group, so many in fact that at the top through all the crowds of people, it was hard to tell which one was your guide. Eventually, after about 20 minutes at the top, some of the guards starting yelling at us to move along and leave.

A nice hike in the forest, entrance fee is average. But be sure to get there during the week because it's getting very crowded during the weekend (you then wait in line for a long time in the packed small path). You can hire a horse for the first half of the way. But it's advised to be in good physical condition to make the trip. Best time to visit is on a sunny day around noon. You will only get 15 minutes at the top spot to admire the butterflies so get your camera ready!

Prepare yourself to see an unique moment from these amazing butterflies. It is a nice hiking to the top of the mountain (approx 60min - went with my 4 year old boy, so can take less than that) to check out them flying just over your head. Bring some extra water and some snacks to regain energy while you go to the top! Cheap and clean, must visit

Went 30th of December at 1pm only to arrive in front of a closed gate. Disappointed not be able to see the mariposas. We asked around and the locals said it's closed.

(Translated by Google) Getting there is easy and simple from Toluca or CDMX, you take the road that goes towards Nevado de Toluca and from there you continue to Valle de Bravo by free. The average travel time is 2 hours from CDMX. The day I went I did not have to see the Monarch Butterfly in its splendor, because it was a cloudy day and they tell me that there must be sun so they can come out and fly continuously. The place is fine to visit once, if not because of the Monarch Butterfly they don't have anything outstanding to offer. They have bathrooms with a cost of 5 pesos, general parking 40 pesos, either motorcycle or car, and the entrance fee is 60 pesos. The cost to go up on horseback is 250 pesos round trip. Go up slowly if you do not have good condition, at your own pace, since sometimes they want to rush you to go down quickly and climb a new group. Wear comfortable clothes, you will sweat. It also brings water, since during the journey and upstairs there is nothing to buy, downstairs at the beginning there is to eat the classics of these places and drink water, soda or beer. Date of visit: Saturday, January 23, 2021. Lleva ropa cómoda, vas a sudar.

Beware only a small distance with paved road, the rest is all dirt road, climate will be a very big issue to see the butterflies, if it's cold, don't waste your time climbing to the top, there will be nothing to see. The climbing is quite stiff, and riding a horse is recommended if you're not the walking type (last 20 min are the most difficult and horses can't cross it). It will take around 1 hour of walking to get to the sanctuary, and about 30-40 min on the way back

Before entering they informed us that there were no more butterflies, that we would only find dead butterflies.
