This place was incredible not only because of the impeccable food, but because of the incredible service and beautiful dance of the wait staff to meet your every need. They were incredibly attentive without being pushy and the food was absolutely incredible. My only regret was that we didn’t come more hungry because I wish we could’ve eaten more. However they were able to pack everything up for us and we took it home. It was an incredible experience and would absolutely recommend.

Worth the hype. The place is electric - everyone hanging out and having a good time. Super fresh seafood, world class service. Tuna tostadas were my fave + don’t miss the fig tart!

Amazing experience! The staff is super friendly, the service is incredible, and the food is absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this place if you’re in Mexico City. One of the best culinary experiences I’ve had. You have to get the Octopus Tostadas and the fig tart for dessert, it’s to die for.

Mediocre food at exorbitant prices, don’t be fooled by the reviews and avoid it. We ordered based on the waiter’s recommendation the best Contramar had to offer: grilled octopus and whole grilled fish with home made rubs. The octopus was very tender, but it wasn’t well paired with the salsa and potatoes and the dish overall was average at best. The grilled fish didn’t taste good at all, the sauces were poor in flavor, the whole thing wasn’t salty enough. We didn’t finish either of the dishes and were feeling stomach sick long after. The fig tart was lovely but an insufficient solace at a seafood restaurant. The best thing we tried there was the mandarine juice. For all of this we paid an outrageous 120 USD. I’m shocked this place is so hyped up and has such high volume of positive reviews. I won’t come back and can’t recommend the place further.

Superb all around; easy to see why this is such a popular spot. I'd recommend it without hesitation. Vibe, food, service - all top notch. Service honestly some of the best I've had anywhere on earth. Vibe is a nice balance of energetic without being wild, and a nice place without being pretentious or stuffy. Lot of great stuff on the menu; I feel like I could go back several times in a row and just try different stuff. Extensive drinks list including a respectable variety of whiskies. I had to make a reservation about a week in advance, but you can also show up without one and wait it out for an opening. Totally going on my favorites list and I'd for sure make it a point to go back if I'm in CDMX again.

Exceptional, wish I could give 6 stars. The food was phenomenal, specifically the tuna tostada as a standout. The service was attentive and friendly as well as helpful with recommendations. Came for lunch without reservations. Was able to be seated no problem with only waiting in a 5 minute line

Contramar is worth the hype. We were worried we wouldn’t be able to get a seat due to its popularity, but we were seated right away with no reservation, even when it was busy. The tortilla chips and salsa for the table were some of the best I’ve had. Hopefully the pictures speak for themselves - fresh, delicious seafood!

Am I in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Milan? This can’t be Mexico City. Contramar attracts the chic and the beautiful with their glasses perched on their head, sweaters draped on shoulders, and knowing hands touching the right shoulders to get the correct table. I tried to match their cool, but come on, I’m a goof. The scene could keep me occupied for hours. This ain’t your father’s Mexico. Staff know their stuff and the extensive menu. We were treated well, Mexico respecting older people in a way that out classes the United States. Everything tasted good, but was not earth shattering. However, I would pay hundreds for that ooh la la scene. It was that entertaining, and as I mentioned, you will find something you like on that gigantic menu. Our Sunday lunch came to $150 American dollars with two glasses of wine. La Dolce Vita in CDMX!

My friend and I are still suffering from the food poisoning and bacteria in the seafood. It’s been two weeks now, we ended in the ER with fever and dehydration. Food tasted fine and we had high hopes after all the recommendations, but sadly it ended our trip abruptly and on a very sad note. Glad we were able to fly home to get more treatment. Be careful with what you eat!

This is a pricier, and highly recommended, restaurant in Mexico City but ended up being so worth it. The difference is felt a lot when you’re paying like $1 for a street taco. However, you can’t get the same quality, quantity, and value for this price back home. We ended paying ~$98 each after tax and tips. The service was impeccable - they didn’t miss a beat for anything. Always there to refill water, tortillas, sauces, etc. before you even say anything or make eye contact. The server recommended for us to get 2 tuna and 2 scallop tostadas instead of just tuna and it was the right choice. The amount of scallops piled on there was beautiful! For the fish, we got the half and half red/green rub and I personally liked the green parsley rub more than the red adobo - both were delicious regardless. I found that the green one had more complexity in flavour. Also - UNLIMITED tortillas that are kept warm in little cloth blankets that they refilled super quickly 😭😭. Tip: Come right at opening at 11am-12pm depending on the day. It is difficult to get reservations and we didn’t have one.

It’s a household name so I figure I try what that means in the capital. When I attempted to reserve a spot on open table the next availability wasn’t until a month later. I decided just to try my luck and arrived on a not so busy weekday and was seated fairly quickly. The ambience and decor is modern and elegant with white table cloths and servers all in dapper uniform. It’s definitely a place to be “seen.” Our server was friendly but really tried to upsell us and constantly repeated the order so he could pitch us new things to order. It became too excessive and impacted the experience. Grilled whole dish was the standout amongst all the dishes we tried. I also recommend any of their ceviches. I would say though after being 2 weeks in Mexico, You are essentially paying for the Ambience and the name and not really the taste. It was just okay…

By far, one of the best meals that I’ve had in CDMX! All the food was phenomenal and the prices were perfect. I’d highly recommend getting the whole fish because it really does fill you up. The fish ceviche was super tasty and paired perfectly with the rest of the dishes! Can’t wait to come back because I’m already missing the food.

Truly one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. The level of service was exceptional and our server Ramon was amazing!! I had high expectations going into this restaurant and was blown away. The quality of food was amazing and the presentation was spectacular. Ramon and Sergio (the back server) were super attentive and anticipated our needs before we even know we needed them! Highly recommend this place!! Can’t wait to come back!!! Thank you!

We did make reservations for lunch, tho the restaurant was taking walking right at open at noon. All the dishes talked about were good. I would recommend the Al pastor fish tacos and the tuna tostadas as bring the 2 standout dishes. The whole fish was good, but not as flavorful as the Al pastor rub.

Overall an excellent experience at Contramar. It was very attentive and quick service, even while rather busy. We had to make the reservation a couple days in advance for lunch. The menu was quite large so we asked for recommendations; and everything was absolutely delicious. It was our best sit down meal in Mexico City by far and well worth it

We booked here to celebrate our anniversary well ahead of time. Found this place after watching the owner’s Masterclass :) It was very quiet because we ate at 1pm (early for Mexicans) and COVID has kept tourists away- we didn’t mind at all! Food- OMG the freshest seafood! Tuna tostadas are THE dish to get! WOW. We also LOVED the fish tacos with salsa brava! Service- amazing. It was like having multiple waiters at our service within seconds. Will definitely be back and 100% recommend this place to anyone visiting Mexico City! Note: the restaurant looked far different than it did in photos, clearly due to COVID. The restaurant looked very barren and there was a lot of staff compared to customers at the time we went. Not a bad thing- just know what to expect during the pandemic!

We happened to be walking around here and stopped by the restaurant we asked for a table and they had one inside. Since it's sea food we wanted to try the octopus but then since you can see the menu online, there are other pictures of dishes that I wanted to try. So ended up ordering plenty of drinks and food, and more food. Among these dishes we tried, ceviche contramar, fish tostada, mezcal 400 conejos joven. Mezcal Monte lobos espadin, octopus, fish, mojito, merengue desert, expresso and everything was made well. I like their fast service and at this pace you don't have just one server, everyone pitches in to offer you a great service. Food is on a pricy side, unfortunately we tried to get reservation for another day and they wouldn't do it and their page doesn't let you make reservations either.

Very delicious seafood restaurant. I liked coming here for lunch because it’s airy and casual. The food is a bit overpriced for what it is but still recommended!

A great seafood restaurant in the heart of Mexico City! Service was lovely, helpful and quick, and the food and drinks were all incredible. I’d highly recommend the grilled whole fish dish - their signature - as well as the tuna and avocado tostada and the fried shrimp tacos. One strange thing was that ordering stops at 8pm - rather unusually for Mexico City - so make sure to get through the menu quickly if you’re here for dinner. Drinks keep coming till closing, however, and so do the good times. The atmosphere was buzzy and completely unpretentious, and the large plates are all meant for sharing with friends and family. I would absolutely recommend!

The best dining experience I have had in a long, long time. Contramar is without a doubt some of the very best food I have eaten. Service was so fun and helped us to order exactly what we needed and wanted (s/o to the captain). We got the ceviche, the tuna and calamari tostadas, the famous green/red fish, a banana pie, a cheeky mezcal shot (served with chili oranges) and delicious espresso boozy drinks (not sure what they were called we saw them go by and ordered). The seafood was so tender and fresh. I swear the tuna melted in my mouth as I bit into it. All of it I dream of every night since i have been there. There is potential that the tostadas are the best bite of food I have ever eaten. We came on a Saturday, and it was absolutely buzzing, the energy was amazing and the food was even better. Getting reservations are difficult, but without question more than worth the wait. I would book a trip back to Mexico City from Canada just to eat here again.

To put it simply, this place is amazing. The food is absolutely delicious, each dish we ordered was spot on. Everything is so fresh and full of flavour. The menu and wine list is extensive and they have a huge selection of daily specials. The service is also outstanding, the waiters speak very good English are extremely attentive and kind. The perfect place to sit outside, enjoy a long lunch and watch the world go by. I couldn’t recommend this place enough.

Great place! Excellent fresh seafood, wonderful service and terrific desserts. We came with luggage en route to the airport and the security guards kindly stored it for us. We were in and out in an hour and still felt very well cared for. Book ahead as it gets very busy! Certainly worth a visit if in CDMX.

5 ⭐. This was an amazing meal! Excellent service, and the food was fantastic. It was so good that we even bought the chef's cookbook. Must haves: Tamarind margarita with mezcal, tuna toasts, al pastor tacos, octopus, and the figs tart. All amazing. We also liked: everything. 😊

5 stars for the service alone. The food was also pretty fantastic. Like everyone says, you must get the tuna tostadas. How could something taste that amazing?! The main fish dish was melt in your mouth and super fresh. I like that it was a high end experience without that pretentious vibe. You’ll have a great time and happy belly :).

I have eaten here twice. Some of the dishes are amazing and some are just good, to me. Today the tostadas de atun con erizo were amazing. The carnitas de atun, fish tacos and pulpo dish we had were a little boring. Very good quality ingredients though. Also they have outstanding service. We went at 12:00 and we're able to get a table immediately but it filled up fast by the time we left.

We were recommended this place by a friend who's family lives in Mexico city. The clientele seemed a pretty even split between tourists and locals. We didn't love the atmosphere of the dining room, which is very dark, but we were at least seated on a table by the open front doors so we could people watch. We were brought tortilla chips, salsa and limes straight away and we ordered some margaritas - tamarind and classic. We started with the tuna and crab tosadas - both beautifully fresh and melt in the mouth. Then some classic fried fish tacos and sopas with 'al pastor' fish. Finally, the whole fish (contramar style - half with red chilli adobo rub and half with parsley rub) which I found underwhelming and just very salty and heavy. We enjoyed making our own tacos but wished we'd used our remaining stomach space on more taco or tosadas - don't just order it because it's the famous dish! Service was absolutely excellent. The staff were keen to make recommendations and always there when we needed. We massively over-ordered as we were so keen to try everything and our waiter helpfully suggested we get a half portion of the tosadas, which turned out to be a very good idea. It was definitely one of the pricier meals we had in Mexico city, although we could have ordered a lot less. It would make an excellent social group meal, but I'm not sure if I'd return as a couple as I didn't love the vibe enough.

A very hyped up place with impossible to get reservations but a very much deserving of a hype! Everything was delicious but I especially recommend tuna tostadas and soft shell crab tacos which come with tortillas that, for some reason, resemble Indian parathas 🤷🏻‍♂️They do work quite well with the stuffing. Bonus points for a delicious fig tart.

Three years ago today I visited Contramar but I'm still taken with it now. I remember it so fondly, and highly recommend visiting if you're in the neighborhood. Wonderful seafood creations with relaxing outdoor seating overlooking the city scape (and lots of desserts). Hard place to beat for a leisurely afternoon among friends. Can't wait for my next visit and dining experience here when I return!

Great seafood restaurant for all. Even if you don't care for fish there are plenty of options with their appetizers. We ordered the tuna tostadas and al pastor tacos which were recommended to us. Both of which were the best we had in our experiences in the area. Highly recommend giving this place a try if you are in the area. We were able to be seated right away too which was quite lucky as this place seems to be popular.

Food was good. Waiter, while perfectly nice, really pushed the fish two ways entree. Unfortunately, it was on the boring side. Everything else we felt was more inspired. Service seemed to us a bit overwhelming, too attentive perhaps? Otherwise it was a pleasant experience.

Probably one of the best sea food restaurants I have ever tried. Obsessed with Contramar's Pescado A la Talla (grilled fish) & Tostadas de Atun (my favorite). Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly paired with a Carajillo (Mexican cocktail). Fig tart was pure heaven. Top-notch seafood experience! Highly recommended!

Highly recommend making a reservation. We had one thank goodness because they were packed! The food was absolutely amazing and service as well. We visited during rainy season, so it did start to sprinkle a bit. We were seated outside which is covered, but they moved our table a little further in to prevent any stray rain. It seems that they also have valet service.

This restaurant was recommended to us by several people so we decided to check it out. The kitchen closes at 8, because seafood is normally something for lunch. We came around 2 to make a reservation for later that day- I’m not sure if you can make a reservation online. The staff made us feel at home from the very first moment and I really liked the fact they made us several suggestions. They were very professional and friendly without exaggerating it. We ordered the tostadas de atun and we were blown away by the taste explosion - excellente! After that we had the pescado a la talla contramar. Don’t forget to eat the head as well, it’s too good to leave it on the plate. After that the merengue con fresa and carajillo 43 and a little piece of heaven. Unbeknownst to me, we were eating at the restaurant of the chef that I knew from Masterclass. It was Gabriela Cámara who taught me to make salsa verde, aguachile y tacos al pastor! I was so excited that I told Miguel, our beloved waitor about this and he immediately introduced me to the chef and I was so happy to meet the person who shared her knowledge and love for Mexican cuisine to me in my home in the Netherlands during our long quarantine nights. 5/5!

My favorite seafood place in CDMX. Love the outdoor seating, amazing service and everything is so so good… And great for people watching as bit of a scene

Was everything 5 star? Well, no. BUT, when you weigh the service, ambiance, and total experience then, yes. The best thing we had was the signature fish.... outstanding.

Excellent experience! I would highly recommend focusing on the tuna tostada and the whole grilled fish (definitely skip the ceviche)! The tequila margarita was very tart, while the mezcal margarita had a perfect smoke-y to tart ratio.

Delicious restaurant. Best aguachile I have ever had. The service is excellent. The pescado a la talla is the best and the octopus was great. Highly recommended

Incredible!! Tuna tostada, shrimp and octopus adobo tacos and whole fish were the favorites

I wish I could give this even more stars. OMG. The service and the food is the best I've had in any country. We had the ceviche, the atún tostada, the pescado, the shrimp aquachiles, and multiple margaritas. Do not miss this place when in Mexico City. It will blow your mind. This review doesn't do it justice because I can't find the words.

Enjoyed the food here immensely! -1 for the price. They have a soft opening at 11am where you can be seated.

Contramar has been on my restaurant list for many years, since seeing the documentary about it on Netflix. Everything about our experience there was phenomenal. Top-notch hospitality from the staff, who answered any and all questions of ours. Timely and speedy service bringing out the food courses & a very robust menu of diverse Mexican dishes. We cannot recommend Contramar enough!

Probably one of the best restaurants in Mexico City. The seafood is so good. We had oyster, tuna taco, raw scallops, grilled fish with two flavors. All of them are quite tasty. Must go place!

Where to even begin! What an amazing experience I had at Contramer! We were able to book the table before hand so we got seated right away! I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time! The tuna tostada was just really good that tuna melted away in my mouth 😆 So so good. The grilled fish with red and green sauce was beautifully plated and very delicious. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Most of them are bilingual which are super plus 🙏 Oh and desserts! If it's available, I highly recommend the strawberry meringue cake. And a glass of coffee digestive drink 🍷 I will go back there again and again and again!

This place came highly recommended from several friends. We couldn't get a reservation so put our name down around 130pm. The wait was 1.5hrs. When we got back, we waited a while longer before we got seated. Be prepared to wait a while if you dont have a reservation. It was very busy with a bunch of people waitinf on the side walk. The ceviche and cocktail combo dishes were the highlights of this lunch. I enjoyed the whole fish as well but it was a bit bland. Their hot sauces were very delicious the habanero one is hot and flavorful and kept burning. We made soft shell crab tacos from the soft shell crab. Everything was well done and solid here. Is it the best seafood restaurant I've ever had? No. The food was decent. It was also quite expensive. However the wait staff was very attentive and may be one of the few restaurants in that area.

Had fun dining here. Fig tart and coconut flan are soooo good! And the octopus dish - not just that, see the small dipping sauce there? Mama mia, I would have 10/5 stars 😂 I don’t know what was it, but I can just eat that sauce with everything!

If you like seafood, this is certainly the place for you. Food was incredibly fresh and tasty. We had the Tuna Tostadas, breaded Scrimp taco and the Contramar Fish for 2 people. My partner loves chilli and the waiter brought out a range of hot sauces for him to try. He was super friendly and very attentive. The waiters are like none I've seen before in terms of how efficient and quick they serve. They were on it all night. The only downside of this is that you do feel a bit rushed to actually digest and enjoy the amazing food being served. I did give 2 less stars for atmosphere as it was a busy place and had that canteen like feeling. Certainly not for a romantic date night. Given that I would 100% come back and try more off the menu

As good as everyone says! And wonderful service! Tuna tostada is a dream as is the tuna sashimi and red/green snapper. Remember to order a carajillo with desert (fig tart and/or meringue).

The aguachile here is fantastic! So fresh and perfectly balanced. The tuna tostadas are great for sharing and addictive. The catch of the day prepared Contramar style is delicious, light and filling.

Contramar is an amazing restaurant. It is my favorite in Mexico City. There are two dishes that you must try: tuna tostada and famous contramar fish. Both of them were amazing, but tuna tostada was out of this world. We also tried aguachili and fish quesedillas and they were also very good.

Well deserved 5 stars. We came early to get a table with no reservation. Staff was extra friendly. Tacos are truly a delight

Top notch. Rightly deserves the high rating. Food, service, atmosphere - everything was amazing! Mind the spice levels in the sauces though :)

This deserves an easy five star with the very cool ambiance and the service. We had the tuna tostada, aguaviche, and the contramar fish. All were super good. I read some comments downplaying the contramar fish. I would not agree, I do think it was a unique taste. The desserts were also very good. Margaritas were also good! Possibly the top restaurant in our three week Mexico trip.

The food and service were absolutely amazing! We didn't have reservations but arrived a little early for lunch and hash no wait. However, I recommend reservations because this place was busy. The wait staff was on top of everything.

If you can’t get a reso, arrive before they open at noon and you should be able to get a spot on the patio or the bar. The food is absolutely delicious and the service is impeccable. 100% worth the hype. Agua Chile Verde and the Scallop Tostadas are a must.

All the food was good, some highlights: - Tuna tostada - Contramar fish - Coconut Flan - Fig tart - Lemon tart The tacos were a bit meh. The service was ok but not very attentive or helpful. The vibe is ok but a bit crammed and not particularly comfortable. Overall, a great place to come for some fish, when in Mexico City.
