I feel compelled to review this place after spending such a thought provoking afternoon there. There is so much to learn about the prison and the people who were incarcerated there. Everything is done with respect and a desire to communicate the truth about what lives in prison were like. I could have spent a lot longer there. One thing I would say is that I felt a presence on the ground floor and kept turning around to see who was behind me. I also felt very uneasy on the top floor which is where the recreation of the transportation experience is. The people were very welcoming and we stopped for a chat on our way out. Recommend highly if you are in this lovely little town - do visit the beautiful harbour and look out for the seabirds too. I saw lots of terns.

The interactive element of the show was quite a good concept and it was very educational. It could be enhanced with improved graphics.

Fascinating and sometimes gruesome display of the gaol and Irish history. We were unsure about booking the VR experience but were really pleased we did as it was excellent and can definitely recommend doing it to become fully immersed in the gaol’s history. The guides were enthusiastic and helpful. The Jailer’s rest cafe at the end of the tour was welcoming with log fire burning and tasty food. Recommend as a day out from Dublin. Bought tickets online prior to visit which is recommended as the VR experience has limited places.

An hour drive from Dublin but worth the trip. Amazing Virtual reality experience. It was interesting to learn about the prisons life.

We visited Wicklow Gaol today and we were fascinated by the history contained within the place. The Staff we met were friendly and curtious. A big disappointment, for us, was how neglected and unkempt the restaurant and toilet facilities were. Even the ground where the outdoor tables were standing was littered with used napkins. The tables in the restaurant were sticky to the touch. As we made our way through the Gaol itself, we felt, while the exhibits were very interesting, a lot of them were tired and in need of care and updating. Being able to smell old cooking oil all the way through the building was very off putting. So, in conclusion, as an Irish person, I was more than a bit embarrassed at the number of foreigners visiting such a tourist attraction, which needs a great deal of upgrading and a decent clean.

A good amount of history and stories about the jail. I got busy fast and it was hard to navigate through people. Unfortunately some rooms had no information. Overall ok experience for an hour walk around the museum. Nice, chatty and helpful staff.

I don’t think anyone could say they enjoyed their visit - but I think almost everyone would say they were moved and educated by it. It is very well done - and rightly so. As an English visitor, I rejoice that the Free State government closed the gaol in 1924 and I was deeply moved to see the Irish tricolour on the wall. May we live in peace as brothers, acknowledging the past and embracing the future.

Brilliant! Go and see this and make sure you pay the extra few euros for the VR experience. Well worth it. Great people there too, welcoming and prepared to have a chat.

Closed earlier than advertised. Travelled 1 and half hours specifically to visit but was shunned out the door. They offered me free tickets the next occasion I visited but it's my time not money I value. I don't need free tickets another time when I'm standing in the gaol ready to go. A most disappointing experience.

Fun spot, but don't make the mistake we did. Allow yourself at least two hours to explore. Going into the cells to hear the dramatic retellings of prisoner experiences is quite fun. The tour is self-guided but you don't need a guide, because the experience feels very interactive.

The virtual reality experience was not something we had done before, so enjoyed that experience. The exhibition is very well done with clear and interesting explanation boards and audio in many of the cells. Has a nice cafe.

Good place for all the family ( beware of stairs & claustrophobic areas) & I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. The best part was the interactive experience - well worth adding to the visit. Also had lunch in the cafe there & can say, it was enjoyable food, not too expensive & all the staff at the Gaol were A1 standard - lovely afternoon.

12/10 couldn't recommend this tour highly enough. There are two tour options, both self guided. Tour 1 is €11.50, you walk through the prison, following stops 1 to 11 with some cells you enter there are people telling their story. Tour 2 is €17.50, that is the one I did, you do the self guided tour like the €11.50 one but before that you do a 20minute vr tour. I couldn't recommend it highly enough and is worth the €6 extra for sure. It takes you through three of the stages of the prison. Highly highly recommend. If you do the tour you also get 10% off in the cafe. Will definitely be back. It was the best experience ever.
