Wildlife research experience in and around of upper bhavani was amazing.. actually we see the destroyed place by exotic plantations. Once there were covered by pristine shola habitats and wildlife.

The Upper Bhavani Lake is a mesmerising and breathtaking lake that is located above the Avalanche Area in the Nilgiri Hills in Udhagamandalam, (also known as Ooty), in Tamil Nadu. This beautiful lake, which was previously ignored and consequently unexplored, is now gaining some popularity and credit for its charming beauty and picturesque scenes. Prior permission by the Forest Department is required to enter the area, along with details of the number of the car and the people who are coming into this zone. The journey to the Upper Bhavani Lake from Ooty is a long car ride, followed by a trip in a bus/jeep and provides the tourists with spectacular views of famous attractions such as Avalanche Hydel Power, Cauliflower Forest, Bhavani Amman Temple and the Upper Bhavani backwaters. Tourists can also spot numerous animals and birds like peacocks and tigers on the way.Even though no one is allowed to touch the water of this pristine lake, the view in itself is worth it. When even the tallest and most exquisite of hill stations in Ooty fail to provide a touristy feeling and adventure, the Upper Bhavani Lake comes to the rescue. The place primarily appeals to those who like to travel on the 'road less taken'. It is indeed a pity that almost 99% of the tourists who visit Ooty are unaware of this lake. Perhaps this is why the Upper Bhavani Lake continues to remain a uncrowded and untouched virgin place that one needs to explore.

Its open now. Its a fantastic place to enjoy the scenic beauty of the nature. It was a pleasant feel to see the variety of birds staying there in the natural atmosphere. The best way to see the birds is by using binocular. It can be rented there. Rs.100 per hour will be the best one. The entry fee is minimal Rs.10 for adult and Rs.5 for kids. Definitely children will enjoy a lot.

As on 8th Dec 2020, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary has been temporarily closed due to Corona. Its one of the oldest water based sanctuary in the country. Nice place to visit with family. Best time to visit is between Oct to Feb as more migratory birds visit during this time period.

First things first, best time to go there is before it gets sunny. Google maps is pretty decent to get you there but keep looking for sign boards as sometimes it could be a detour you wouldn't want. The ticket price is fair. You need to keep your phones in the car or somewhere outside. If you wish to take it with you, you'll have to pay an additional ₹50/phone. We took just one phone. As for the sanctuary, it's not huge. So you can cover it within 1½-2 hours max. Given you take time and enjoy yourself. The place is great and you can also get binoculars on rent if you don't own any for ₹100. We had a great time. There were a lot of birds. If you are lucky an notice enough, some of them might even fly over you. So keep an eye out for that. Apart from the migratory birds and their beautiful chicks, you'll also find owls and Kingfishers. Overall, I'd suggest you visit the place at least once. It's a nice experience.

Excellent place near to Chennai for bird watchers and photographers. It takes around 2 hours to reach from Chennai. On the way to vedanthangal there is a small peak in which a Vishnu temple is there. Cat parking available for ₹30/- Adult ticket price ₹10/- Children below 12 - ₹5/- Camera ₹50/- Binocular for rent from ₹50/- to ₹200/- per hour. 1 km. Stretch for walking under tree shade. During session you can see 6-7 variety of birds. In January i could see 5 types of birds.

A lovely place for bird lovers. Warning - Do not follow GPS while returning to take a short route. It'll take you somewhere and say "Ask human help". We had quite an adventure returning back in the night. Now about the place - Afforable entry fee. During the season time, when most of the exotic birds visit, it such a beautiful sight to see. The songs of the birds, the harmony between the species, the way they swim and catch fish, and the best of all is the flight of the huge birds. They will look small but when they spread their wings to fly, oh my! What huge and gigantic wings to carry them from one country to another. So beautiful. The colours of the different birds were so lovely. Some birds look a pale colour while flying. But while resting on a branch all the colours of their wings will be visible and one can see such a beautiful array of colours and patterns. Do visit everyone. It's surely worth the long drive.

Upper Bhavani is a quiet and calm place . Plan your journey early nearly 45 -60 km from ooty. Require permission from forest officials to visit inside

Very picturesque and relaxing! Not a routine tourist place. You need permission to enter the dam area. Road to the dam is single. You need to be careful in the bends as we were surprised by a bus. Any vehicle coming in the opposite direction makes negotiating the way a little difficult. There's a government guest house in the banks of the dam but only for officials. Photography is restricted.

Lush vegetation and serene ambiance. If you want to take a break to refresh and rejuvenate yourself then this is the place to be. The vegetation resembles those in a temperate climate zone. A wonderful getaway! Recently this place has become highly restricted. You need special permission to visit.

You have to visit once. Scenic and fresh air will lighten you from your stress. No private vehicles allowed. Need to pay Rs. 150 each and have ride tourist vehicle. Better carry bottle of water. It takes more than 4 hours. Prefer window seat and enjoy.

The highest altitude water storage dam in Nilgiris. And there are two mega water pumps that pump water up into this dam. Need permission from Forest Department or TNEB to get here. Very restricted place. River Bhavani originates from this reservoir.

Vedhanthangal Bird Sanctuary is a lake which has large number of bushes and trees🌳.. Birds🕊 spend their time in those bushes and trees.. It is a seasonal tourist place🤘🏻.. We have to visit depending on the time of arrival of birds.. A pavement is build half way around the lake, where we are allowed to walk and site seeing the birds.. Entrance fee is ₹10/person.. They are charging for the mobile camera also, which is ₹50/mobile💰.. Renting of binoculars is also available outside the lake which is probably ₹100/binocular.. Good place to visit with your family and friends for relaxing..

Nice place to visit thousands of birds are there.Entrance only 10rs, and for children 5rs.binocular rent was 50 and 100rs per hour.

You can see birds which are very pleasant to see and hear their sounds. Entry fee is around 100 rs and you can more time. Time restriction is no there. For binoculars you can rent it outside and also about food which is not available outside but fruits you can buy which is so fresh. Outside vedanthangal agriculture land is there so you can take a fresh breeze. But better you go in season time.

Vedanthangal bird sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna. Around 30000 migratory birds come every season to rest at this place before flying away to their destination, at that time whole sanctuary gets lively with colorful birds. These birds visit the place in abundance between October and January. One of the first birds to arrive at Vedanthangal are Openbilled storks and breed twice during the same season before leaving the sanctuary. Other bird species visiting the sanctuary are Great cormorant, Egrets, Spot billed pelican, Darter, night heron, Painted stork, Great Egret, Indian Cormorant, Eurasian spoonbill, Grey Heron, Asian openbill, Purple Heron, pond heron and ducks like Comb duck, sand piper, dabchick, ringed plover, pintails, little stilt, common teals, shoveller, black-winged stilt, red shank, and curlew and arboreal birds like babblers, mynas, barbets, parakeets, bee-eater, cuckoos onoles, Brahminy kite, rollers, drongos and raptors such as black winged kite, pariah kite are seen in Vedanthangal . Apart from birds, mammals like Jackal, Jungle Cat, Black-naped Hare, and Wild Boar are also seen here. Some of the flora species are Barringtonia acutangula, Acacia nilotica, Alangium salviflorum trees and dry evergreen scrub and thorn forests. The birds chirp and nest in the The Barringtonia trees at the edges and the center of the tank and are a beautiful scene to watch.

It is open now. Awesome with abudance of birds. You can rent binoculars outside. Don't go without binoculars.

  • 5/5 Sayako I. 3 years ago on Google
I went during the "off season" when everyone was telling me that there weren't as many birds... But there thousands of storks on the island opposite of the walkway! I may have only seen 7-8 species in total, but that was more than I expected. I watched one stork feeding a chick! Fruit bats too! Definitely worth the 2 hours drive from Chennai. The only negative feedback is the crazy 3000 rupees for the foreigner's handy cam. I didn't have that much on me. So I payed the 500 instead and took photos only.
