The historic side of Colachel has long been overlooked, despite its significance in the Battle of Colachel which was fought on 10th August, 1741 between the Indian Kingdom of Travancore and the Dutch East India Company , during the Travancore-Dutch War. Travancore, under the king Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma defeated the Dutch East India Company. The Travancore forces imprisoned them in the Udayagiri fort. Later, Marthanda Varma asked them to join the Travancore Army. Several European prisoners , including Eustachius De Lannay accepted the offer and served the Travancore Kingdom. The defeat of the Dutch by Travancore is considered the earliest example of an organised power from Asia overcoming European military technology and tactics. Marthanda Varma recorded this conquest with a 'Victory Pillar' erected near the Colachel beach , 68 km south of Thiruvananthapuram. Every year, Indian Army celebrates the anniversary of Colachel Battle.

For tourists, there is nothing.. Just an old pillar but for historians and who love history, it is an amazing place.. The Pillar stands at the place where the Dutch forces were defeated by the Travancore King Anizham Thirunal Marthandavarma.. It was the first time that a European force got defeated in Indian soil... Captain Delannoy was captured by Marthandavarma but he later became the Great Captain of Travancore.. This place was earlier in abandoned stage..Now renovated.. Every year Indian army conducts a celebration here inorder to commemorate the victory in Colachal war 1741

A land where many histories sleep. This memorial can be found by traveling 13.7 km from Thukkalay via Eranial. Colachal Harbor is located nearby. You can also see the Western Ghats from there.

The Battle of Colachel (or Battle of Kulachal) was fought on 10 August 1741 [O.S. 31 July 1741]between forces of the Indian kingdom of Travancore and the Dutch East India Company, during the Travancore-Dutch War. The Dutch never recovered from the defeat and no longer posed a large colonial threat to India, assisting the British East India Company's eventual rise to dominance on the Indian subcontinent.

It is a great place. It was the first time in Indian history that an Asian country defeated a European naval force. The Dutch never recovered from the defeat and no longer posed a large colonial threat to India. This war happened here. Be proud by visiting😊😊😊

A historic monument, reminding us the war between the state of Travancore and the Dutch navy, in which the Dutch are defeated.
