The
church
is
located
on
a
late
antique
burial
ground
on
the
northern
road
of
the
Roman
city.
Since
the
late
4th
century
emerged
several
cult
buildings
at
this
point.
A
late
antique
memorial
building
was
dedicated
to
a
group
of
late
Roman
martyrs,
whose
traditional
number
grew
from
eleven
to
11000
in
the
course
of
the
legendary
development,
and
at
whose
head
the
British
king's
daughter
Ursula
was
born.
She
became
the
title
saint
of
the
church
and
next
to
the
Three
Wise
Men
and
St.
Gereon
city
patroness
of
Cologne.
A
noble
women's
monastery
has
existed
since
the
10th
century.
In
the
second
quarter
of
the
12th
century,
the
current
church
was
rebuilt
as
a
three-aisled
gallery
basilica
with
a
long
choir
and
a
tower-crowned
western
building.
The
Gothic
long
choir
was
built
in
the
last
quarter
of
the
13th
century.
Before
1300,
a
second
aisle
was
added
on
the
south
side,
the
so-called
Marienschiff,
which
was
extensively
redesigned
in
the
15th
century.
In
the
17th
century,
the
interior
was
baroque
and
the
splendidly
furnished
golden
chamber
was
set
up
for
the
storage
and
presentation
of
the
unusually
rich
treasure
trove
of
relics.

the

the

the
19th
century
the
church
was
in
a
precarious
structural
condition.

the

new
furnishing
of
the
