Hidden in the forest, between the highway and the railway line, lies the intermediate factory IXb, which was built in 1877-79 as one of 17 large intermediate factories (23 in total) in the outer Prussian fortress belt. The fortress was used to set up four artillery pieces and offered space for 150-180 soldiers. After 1885 it was reinforced with a sand cushion and concrete layer due to the new explosive grenades. After the First World War, all defenses had to be demolished. Only the Kehl barracks remained standing and was intended for civilian use. The flank ditches, which still have almost their original depth and width and are up to seven meters deep, are something special. The building itself is now firmly sealed with concrete for safety reasons. It is always advisable for anyone interested to walk around the structure, but it is best done in winter when there is less undergrowth.

Located in a small forest. The intermediate work is bricked up. You can still see the ditch from the outside.

It's a shame you can't get in anymore but it's still worth a visit.

Caution! The entrance, which was bricked up, appears to have been deliberately opened. Inside there are mountains of foreign plastic bottles (no deposit). These were probably disposed of there. Maybe someone sleeps there at night as it smells of smoke (extinguished campfire) and there are sleeping items lying around. There are a lot of broken glass at the entrance area and the path in front of it. Please watch your steps. Reporting to the public order office didn't help either. Therefore this way.

Etwas abgelegen und leider etwas vermüllt aber eine Perle wenn man ein wenig Entdecker dran hat und aus der Gegend kommt. Definitiv einen Besuch wert

A beautiful old fort that our Federal Chancellor, Mr. Konrad Adenauer, saved from demolition. Unfortunately, this fort is repeatedly ruined by strange people. It's a shame. A little more respect for such beautiful Prussian builders
