(Translated by Google) Fountain on the old market: In the story of Jan and Griet, the young Griet rejects the farmhand who is courting her as a bad match. He then goes into the Thirty Years' War and becomes a successful cavalry general. On his return to Cologne he marches triumphantly and applauded through the Severinstor, where he sees his one-time great love, Griet, on the market square. He takes off his hat and says: Griet, wer et hät jedonn!" (Griet, who would have done it) and she answered him "Jan, wer et hät jewoss!" (Jan, who could have known that). But he rises to his horse and rides on.

This statue and fountain stands in tribute to Jan von Werth, a 16th and 17th century German soldier who achieved notability during the Thirty Years War. The monument takes the form of a victory column with Jan von Werth atop the column instead of nike. Around the base of the column are four cute looking cherubs, two statues depicting a farmer and a local Cologne Girl. There are also relief sculptures telling the (probably apocryphal) story of why Jan von Werth became a soldier in the first place, but I don’t want to ruin the story for you. Worth visiting when in Cologne.

A romance in Cologne The Jan von Werth-Brunnen is a monument that stands in the middle of the Alter Markt Jan von Werth (1593-1652) was a knight and became a cavalry general. However, he owes his lasting popularity to his love for Griet. Jan fell in love with Griet as a young man, but she rejects him because he is too poor. Later he arrives back in Cologne as Imperial General of the Cavalry and meets Griet again at the vegetable market. Jan got off his horse and took off his hat, and said to Griet "had agreed anyway," to which Griet replied "Jan, how could I do that? know ". Jan then mounted his horse again and rode on. This story is retold every year during carnival in front of the Severinstor. The Jan von Werth Carnival Society then walks from here in a procession towards the Old Market. Carl Cramer wrote the song there "Jan and Griet" about in 1838. It is not certain whether the love between Jan and Griet really happened. What did happen is that Jan von Werth married Isabella von Spaur in St. Verena, Staßberg, in 1637. which led to an unhappy marriage.

The last stop of our river tour is the City of Cologne. We are wandering around the city. We are in Alter Markt (Old Market) Square, one of the liveliest spots in the city. We really liked the historical Jan-von-Werth-Denkmal memorial fountain in the middle of the square. It adds a special beauty to the square.

Johann von Werth was a cavalry general in the Thirty Years' War, in which he participated from 1620 to 1648 on the Spanish side. Then in the Bavarian and finally the Holy Roman Empire. It is located in the center of the square: a stone statue on a Gothic style column. The seated figures on the north and south side represent the value and purity of the city of Cologne: the Farmer of Cologne and the Virgin of Cologne.

Interesting statue in the middle of a popular square. Ask a local to tell you about some of the funny features incorporated into the statue, that are generally not mainstream knowledge.

The Jan von Werth Fountain was donated by the Beautification Association in 1884 and built by Wilhelm Albermann on the Alter Markt. The obelisk fountain can be divided into three main parts. Steps and a base with a water basin, two large ones on the front and two on the back, form the lower part. Two smaller pools are accessible via three steps on the left and right. These pools were originally used by market visitors. Relief panels between the columns on the front and back show Jan and Griet as a young couple and the scene of their reunion. Two larger than life, seated figures are depicted on the north and south sides of the fountain. The male figure is a representation of the Cologne peasant, recognizable by a stick in your right hand and the Cologne coat of arms on your chest. The female figure, holding a shield in her right hand, represents the Virgin. Above the fountain is the standing figure of Jan von Werth, who is shown with legs apart, wearing riding boots and a skirt, and leaning on a sword with both arms

During our tour in Cologne we came across a very beautiful place with an impressive fountain. The Jan von Werth fountain, perfect to sit here and relax. Right behind the fountain there is of course another beer brewery called von Werth. Of course, you can also drink a delicious Kölsch beer here.

Statue of Jon Von Werth. To save time, you can find info below. Johann von Werth (1591 – 16 January 1652), also Jan von Werth or in French Jean de Werth, was a German general of cavalry in the Thirty Years' War. Johann von Werth became a general was due to a girl. The poor peasant Jan fell in love with Griet but she wanted a wealthier partner and declined his offer of marriage. Devastated by her rejection he came upon an army recruiter and signed up to go to war. Through hard work and good fortune he rose to become a general, celebrating several victories. After taking the fort at Hermannstein he was leading his triumphant troops into Cologne through St. Severin's Gate, when he saw his former love Griet selling fruit at a market. Griet was filled with regret at turning down such a successful person and exclaimed "Jan, who would have thought it?" to which he replied "Griet, who would have had done it!" and turns away.

(Translated by Google) The Jan von Wert fountain at the old market is to be remembered and already historic and should be visited here on site. And in the middle of the Altermarkt, the historic town hall is easy to see from here and it's not far to Neumarkt. There are enough restaurants and you can buy a drink in some kiosks. Greetings from the Bergisch. Super!, Ciekawy i interesujący pomnik. Autor: Wilhelm Albermann (Werden an der Ruhr 1835 - Köln 1913), niemiecki rzeźbiarz. Jesteście w okolicy, to warto przyjść i zobaczyć pomnik i okolice. Polecam!

A small but very beautiful monument, located right in front of the city hall, perhaps you must learn about the statue before coming here to know about the history of Germany.
