Paying homage to one of my favorite no-frills no-nonsense Japanese restaurants of all times - Cafe Japan. Here’s somr of my favorites. As soon as you sit down, you are served with a hot or cold towel according to weather. This is accompanied by a refreshing starter of vinegared avocado and tomato and a free flow of iced green tea on the house! 🍚 Salmon tekkadon - fresh salmon, tuna and ikura (salmon roe) laid on a bed of Japanese rice. This is served with a side of miso soup, egg roll, wasabi and pickled ginger. You also get an assortment of sauce and rice seasonings on the side. 🍱 Bento boxes - the bento boxes come with a mix and match option of your favorite proteins. One of my favorite combos is the assorted sushi and stir-fried pork with BBQ sauce Yakiniku. This is also served with miso soup and dessert as well as a potato salad and an egg roll. Quite a hefty portion! 🍣 Salmon nigiri and tuna roll sushi - fresh and authentic as always. I’ve always appreciated simplicity and clean flavors which is one reason I adore Japanese food 🥤 Calpico - this Japanese probiotic drink is either served with water as a mix-in or soda. I always go with soda for a refreshing hit 🍨 Homemade ice creams - my absolute absolute favorites are the match ice cream and the red bean. So so good! I would still name this place as a hidden gem without the usual pomp and grandeur of “Japanese” restaurants but with oodles more substance and great food. I’d like to keep it that way too for the sake of those with discerning palates. It’s hosted at a charming old fashioned house and does not even have AC and this is exactly how I’d like to keep it, without the unnecessary fanfare.

Food is delicious and affordable in comparison to all other japanese restaurant in colombo . We tried Bento box . It comes with rice, soup, soba and somen. We selected chicken karaage and grilled fish along with bento box. we tried giyoza. It was delicious too. They also offer free salad, cold tea and dessert . Hope to visit another time.

Me and my husband are huge fans of Japanese cuisine and were looking for a place to satisfy our cravings. And we’re so glad we came across this place 😍❤️ Certainly one of the most underrated places I’ve been to coz they definitely deserve more!!! The value for money was totally worth it. We ordered two bento boxes which came with a side salad and dessert which were so delicious! This will be our go to place for Japanese cuisine for sure and we will be visiting this place very soon 😍😍❤️

Unlimited ice barley and green tea. ✍️ Had to pay another visit to @cafe_japan_in_colombo_srilanka since my first visit exceeded my expectations and safe to say they didn't disappoint 💯 ✍️ Ever had a moment where you spend a hefty amount for a meal but still feel pretty satisfied since you don't feel like it was rip off ? Well that's exactly how I felt when I tried this Bento box. ✍️ This is the most sought after dish at the restaurant and comes with a choice of two proteins. Proteins vary from Chicken Karagge, Chicken teriyaki, Sashimi, Sushi , Grilled Fish, Deep fried prawn and many more ..... ✍️ First I got the miso soup with bits of tofu. It was a hearty starter. ✍️ For my meat options I got the teriyaki chicken and sushi. The bento box was generous in offering various flavours and textures. ✍️The Japanese potato salad and Tamago along with the Japanese sweet red beans were all new flavours I got to try. The Tamago is a Japanese rolled egg. It packs a sweet and savoury punch with a light, fluffy texture. ✍️ The chicken was drizzled with the umami rich teriyaki sauce and paired brilliantly with the rice. The Nigiri needless to say is the best in Colombo. ✍️ Finally I got my desert and ordered the strawberry panacotta this time around. It was a refreshing dessert without being too heavy on the palette. ✍️ This is a must visit if you're a sucker for japanese. The service was top notch as usual. I mean who gives you a warm towel to freshen up, a complimentary dessert and unlimited iced barley 🥹 ✍️ The ambience is peaceful and solo bruncher friendly 💯

Came with a couple to a Japanese restaurant. Since I really love Japanese cuisine and visit many Japanese restaurants, I can compare the quality and make an expert assessment. They brought a set of sushi - Samurai. My girlfriend and I were very pleased. Large portion, they didn’t spare the fish, it was very tasty and they also gave me a small compliment in the form of a drink and salad. I recommend it to everyone, the price is also normal for such a kitchen. Confident 5 stars!

Hands down THE BEST JAPANESE RESTAURANT IN SRI LANKA!! Awesome bento, miso soup, dessert and green tea for a very affordable price. No hidden charges or taxes. Ohh and free complimentary fruit bowl and barley ice tea with unlimited refills. The atmosphere is very relaxed and calm music plays in the background. Extremely friendly staff. There is a Japanese lady to help you with any queries regarding food. Would totally recommend this place, and would definitely come again

I highly highly recommend Cafe Japan to anyone who is looking for authentic Japanese. Located in Borella Cross Road. I'm more surprised to see a bill with NO VAT AND SERVICE CHARGES. and they gave us complimentary salads, iced tea and dessert. And who does this? I had the best service there.

Criminally underrated place. Excellent experience overall. We tried the nigiri and maki platter and a bento box. Everything had those perfect subtle flavours you associate with Japanese cuisine. The prices are super reasonable, no taxes, and you get complimentary sweets and barley/green tea as well. Menu in pics.

Amazing sushi! All fresh and really good size portions. Cannot recommend enough. Very reasonable for the quality and the staff are great. Free cold tea and salads. Really great place

It's baaaaaack! (Or maybe it never left) Back in the day more than a decade ago Cafe Japan on Ward Place used to be your go to for affordable value driven Japanese with easily the best green tea ice cream in town. We noticed it opened up again at Borella Cross roads but whenever we drove past it didn't seem very full. Some word of mouth reviews assured us that the food was still good so we took a chance. Food was very good. Portions excellent and pricing competitive. Ambience was basic but then again, who cares when they offer that rwte thing which is value for money Japanese food in this day and age. And yes the Green Tea Ice cream still rocks. Will be back. Recommended.

Managed by a Japanese family, this is one of the best(if not best) Japanese restaurant in the town. Food is unbelievably fresh and most importantly consistent. You must not skip the desserts. The place is very clean and well maintained. You will not see interior deco or anything that “looks Japanese”. Good thing about it is that the price only depends on the food, nothing more.

Amazing food , can’t believe we have driven past Cafe Japan for years and not stepped in to have a meal . This place will be my new go to for a Japanese meal fix ..

I'm so disappointed that I didn't visit sooner! Very cosy ambience. I'd go there everyday if I could just to have the green tea, miso soup and the bento. I loved the bite sized tuna mayo rolls! I was overjoyed to see a decent collection of naruto, detective conan and a few other old manga in the corner as well. There's limited parking but we went close to 9pm, so there was space. Curious to try more on the menu next time!

Since i've been introduced to Cafe Japan I have fallen in love with this place. It's my absolute favourite Japanese restaurant. Their bento package is awesome and absolute value for money. I love the katsu chicken here as well as the red bean ice cream. Its a quiet place with quick service.

Such a cosy calm place! Was mostly impressed with the service. They are so attentive and quick on their feet ☺️ it's very rare to see this kind of service in Colombo restaurants. Food was authentic & very light on the pallet. Exactly how Japanese home made would be! So happy I tried them out.. !

The food is amazing. I am lost for words. May it be for a vegan or even for all others; the range on the menu is just perfect as not too many pictures and not too many choices to confuse your lunch or dinner decision. You must try their Matcha Ice cream for desert. Due to my love for this ice cream I have been unable to try any other desert choices they offer 😃. Extremely affordable and authentic japanese food. The food was fresh and was served quite quickly even though they were busy. We were given a chance complimentary salad and a cute little toffee at the end of our meal. Definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants legit japanese food

Probably the most authentic Japanese food in town. Delicious food, warm and welcoming service; it’s like you are dining at someone’s home rather than at a restaurant. Overall, well worth the price.

The worst Japanese I've ever been. The waitress not helpful with the menu, just pushing to take the order. No udon, no gyoza, no ramen, only "package" meals with a bit of this and that. I got a simple sushi with carton seaweed and 3 sauces abandoned in front of me. Dessert was a coffee jelly with liquid cream on top...horrible.

First I was sceptical abt this place when I saw it on the google maps. But oh boy, one of the best places that I've been for dinner. The food, service and the hospitality is beyond expected. Highly recommended for authentic Japanese cuisine.

You won't find any other place in the country that gives you big sushi pieces for a very reasonable price. What I enjoy the most at cafe japan is the portion size. There's a table tennis table to enjoy until your order is ready.

Authentic Japanese cuisine prepared & served by expatriate Japanese family in Colombo. This restaurant has been in town over 10 years which confirms they are in demand. Parking is the only area I see a drawback but it’s a common issue in some of the good restaurants in Colombo. Having said that do not make it a point to avoid this nice place.

It was a great find. The food was very good value for money. Loved their veg bento box and green tea ice cream. The coffee jelly was also quite nice.
