Very nice temple. You may observe all the rituals while being there. The only problem for tourists is that there are no English translations there (except "toilet", which is good), everything is written in local language and alphabet. Remember - if someone brings you flowers, you cannot take them. You just put your hands on them. Also you can buy flowers nearby (in the same territory) and put them near the statues of Gods (there are many there). If you put the flowers, you have to hack the stems and put only the flowers' blossoms. Also you may take a colorful pitch and water the sacred tree. Don't forget to take off your shoes before entering the area of the temple (near the gates, just look when the locals do that). But it's worth to take socks with you as the sand may be hot, also your feet will stay clean.

Kelaniya Raja maha viharaya, also known as Kelani Temple is a sacred temple worshipped by Buddhists. It locates in Kelaniya, 11 km north-east from Colombo. Lord Buddha has arrived Kelaniya during the third visit to Sri Lanka , on the eighth year after the enlightenment. The quarrel between two brothers for the ownership of a gem-studded throne was a reason for the final visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka. After the reconciliation, Lord Buddha has preached Dhamma, seated on this throne. Mahawansa records that this gem-studded throne is enshrined in the stupa of Kelaniya. A golden era of Kelaniya temple was the Kotte era but later the European governance of the country has caused the temple to lose a large part of its land and the ancient glory. The king Kirthi Sri Rajasingha patronized the temple to be rebuilt and also the 20th century philanthropist Helena Wijewardana made donations for the reconstruction of the temple. Kelaniya temple is famous for the paintings by the great artist Solias Mendis which represent the stories of Jathaka tales (stories about previous lives of Lord Buddha) and also many important incidents of the life of Lord Buddha. The Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue is another artwork placed on the grounds of the temple. This is the starting point of Duruthu Maha Perahera, a religious procession held on the month of January every year. Kelaniya temple is a living proof of the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, often visited by Buddhists from all over the world.

We went there on Sunday and they had some kind of religious ceremony we couldn’t do much or see much but it is just temples after all. Also you have to take out your shows and walk on the sand holding your shoes with you.

Kelaniya temple is one of the most secred buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. This is one of the three places in Sri Lanka that Lord Buddha visited. The temple has a Pagoda, a Shrine Room, a Bo tree and few dewala as well. The most significant of them all is the Shrine Room. Even though it is not as old as the Pagoda Shrine Room walls are fully covered with paintings. There is a large sleeping statue of Lord Buddha on the right side of it. Passing the sleeping Buddha statue, the hallways and all the walls covered with the best paintings in Sri Lankan history. The painter is Soliyas Mendis and these painings are mesmerizing. Ceiling walls and walls have the same style painings which are describing special events of Buddhist history. The place is crowded during poya days and weekends. There is plenty of parking space available. The public toilets are not well maintained and the restaurants around the temple are not clean and hygienic.

This location is just a 0.5-hour drive from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. It houses one of the main Buddhist temples in the country, believed to be the place where Buddha arrived according to Sri Lankan history. The temple features iconic wall paintings, notably created by Mr. Solias Mendies, a renowned master painter in Sri Lanka. During holidays and weekends, this site experiences heavy crowds.

This sacred place believe to be visited by Lord Buddha, during King Manni~Akkitha. Large worship area, floored with white sand give very pleasant and calm environment, gives everyone unprecedented mood for Mindfulness. Many people are there still it’s cool and quiet. Irrespective of your religion, I would suggest, make a visit by your own and experience the tranquil and quiet.

The temple has often been associated with the rise and fall of Ceylon / Sri Lanka, with the popular saying that as the Kelaniya temple rose, Sri Lanka rose and as it fell, the country and its administration fell. It has thus had a deep association with the political powers of the country. It is also infamous for Mapitigama Buddharakkitha, the chief conspirator of the 1959 assassination of Ceylon's fourth Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike.[2] Buddharakkitha was the chief incumbent (chief priest) of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara from 1947 to 1959.[3] History Edit Buddhists believe the temple to have been hallowed during the third and final visit of the Buddha to Sri Lanka, eight years after gaining enlightenment.[4] Its history would thus go back to before 500 BCE. The Mahawansa records that the original Stupa at Kelaniya enshrined a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached. The temple flourished during the Kotte era but much of its land was confiscated during the Portuguese empire. Under the Dutch empire, however, there were new gifts of land and under the patronage of King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha the temple was rebuilt. It was refurbished in the first half of the 20th century with the help of Helena Wijewardana. The temple is also famous for its image of the reclining Gautama Buddha and paintings by the native artist Solias Mendis which depict important events in the life of the Buddha, in the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, also incidents from the Jataka tales. It is the venue for the Duruthu Maha Perehera procession each January. An 18-foot stone statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has been erected at the temple.

The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the oldest temples in Sri Lanka. It is considered as the place where the Supreme Buddha visited Sri Lanka for the third time. This temple is situated very close to the Kelani River. This sacred ground is unique to Buddhists. It is said that a jewel encrusted chair is treasured in the Kelani Dagaba. This dagaba takes the shape of a grain. You can also see the ancient paintings of this temple. The painting was done by Mr. Solius Mendis. The paintings are yellow, orange, and brown in colour. Even though it is a place that is visited by many people every day, you can set foot on this auspicious ground and relax your mind. You can buy flowers and other offerings near the main gate. And also there is enough space to park your vehicles. As a Buddhist, it is a sacred place that you must offer. ❤️ (copied)

This historic temple, steeped in Sri Lankan heritage, offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle of everyday life. The temple's architecture and sculptures are awe-inspiring, showcasing the artistic and cultural prowess of ancient Sri Lanka. I recently visited the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, and it was a truly breathtaking experience. This ancient Buddhist temple, just a short distance from Colombo, is not just a beautiful landmark but also a haven of peace and spirituality. What I loved: Stunning architecture: The whitewashed buildings with intricate carvings and the iconic stupa overlooking the lake are instantly captivating. Stepping into the temple complex felt like stepping back in time, enveloped by centuries of history and devotion. Serene atmosphere: The temple grounds exude a profound sense of calm. The gentle chanting of monks, the fragrant incense, and the soft clinking of prayer bells create a truly meditative atmosphere. Rich history: Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is believed to have been visited by the Buddha himself, adding another layer of significance to its sacred aura. It was fascinating to learn about the temple's long and storied past through the informative plaques and exhibits. Beautiful details: Everywhere you look, there's something captivating – intricate murals depicting Buddhist stories, vibrant statues, and delicate lotus ponds. I spent hours simply wandering and taking in the beauty of the place. Things to keep in mind: Dress code: Remember to dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. You can rent sarongs at the entrance if needed. Footwear: Leave your shoes outside before entering the temple. Respectful behavior: Maintain silence and be mindful of the sacredness of the site. Overall, I highly recommend visiting the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya. It's a place that will leave you feeling serene, inspired, and connected to something greater than yourself. Tips: Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds, especially on weekends. Consider hiring a guide for a deeper understanding of the temple's history and significance. Take some time to meditate or simply sit and soak in the peaceful atmosphere

Beautiful significant historical Buddhist temple, with paintings of the 18th and 20 AD. A visit is recommended. the paintings by Soliyas Mendis and of the Russian Artist Karl Kassmann are amazing for its vibrant colure and the grace of the human body and the mountain of Kailash. Considering that they are are 90 years since painting. the stone inscription at the entrance HDW 1888 is in reference to Helena Dep Weerasingh who at the age of 24 became the lay deity to look after the interest of the monks and their well being. She dedicated her self for for 50 years to the task. The entrance archway build in 1830 is equally well done.

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya which is the land graced by the third and final visit of BUDDHA to ancient Sri-Lanka. The KANDYAN era paintings which illustrates Jataka Stories still can be seen in two chambers inside the temple. There are some famous paintings by the notable artist Solias Mendis, which depict important life events of Buddha, in the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Everyday the temple is crowded by the worshipers who do their offerings to Buddha by doing, Mal pooja, Dhum Pooja, pan pooja. The atmosphere is very calm early in the morning which I can say is a best timing to do Meditation sitting in front of Bodhi Tree or inside the temple whatever place you prefer.

A great temple with historically significant because Buddha visited there whenever he came to Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, most tourists don’t know about this place, and the site isn’t being kept well. Inside is clean and beautiful, but outside, you will find lots of garbage. We were there for a festival, and our sandals were stolen.

On my initial visit, I found the temple incredibly serene and picturesque. The grandeur of the Bodhi tree and the intricate ceiling patterns captivated me. The convenience of parking and accessibility from the car park added to the positive experience. This temple holds immense historical and sacred significance in Sri Lanka, boasting ancient paintings, remarkable architecture, and a peaceful ambiance. Ample parking space and helpful vendors further enriched the visit. Avoiding crowded poya days would likely enhance the experience. I highly recommend paying a visit to immerse yourself in its tranquility and historical richness.

One of the most sacred and historical temple in Sri Lanka. I was been there 10-15 years ago and still I can remember the calm and relaxing environment I enjoyed here. The most happiest thing is, even now, after 10-15 years it was the same as earlier. Less commercialized compared to similar other places. The paintings, antient architecture, relaxing environment, and lot more to enjoy. Abundant parking space available. Vendors inside were really helpful. Better to avoid busy poya days. Recommended to visit.

One of the quite places to gather your inner peace if you are visiting odd times during the day. However cns see huge number of people visiting during the weekends and specially on Saturdays.Would not really recommend you to go there on Poya days if you hate too much of crowds. There are number of flower stalls which you need for rituals at the left side of the entrance.

Kelaniya (Kalyanam) is mentioned in Ramayana and in the Buddhist chronicle, the Mahawansa which states that the Gautama Buddha (5th century BC) visited the place, after which the dagaba of the temple was built.[1] The suburb is also of historical importance as the capital of a provincial king Kelani Tissa (1st century BC) whose daughter, Viharamahadevi was the mother of king Dutugemunu the great, regarded as the most illustrious of the 186 or so kings of Sri Lanka between the 5th century BC and 1815. Sri Lankan Buddhists believe that the Buddha visited Kelaniya in order to quell a quarrel between the Naga leaders of two warring factions: Chulodara (literally "the small-bellied one") and Mahodara (literally "the big-bellied one"). They were quarrelling over a jewel-encrusted throne. After the Buddha showed them the futility of their quarrel they converted to Buddhism and together offered the throne to the Buddha. It is believed that the Dagaba (Sthupa or Buddhist temple) seen today was built with the throne as a relic inside. Sculpture of Kelaniya Temple. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara has become famous because of the beautiful paintings and sculpture by Solias Mendis depicting various events in the history of Sri Lanka. Thousands of Buddhists come to see the Buddhist pageant of Kelaniya, popularly referred to as Duruthu Maha Perahera of Kelaniya in the month of January every year. According to Ramayana, after King Ravana’s death, Vibeeshana was crowned as the King of Lanka by Lakshmana at Kelaniya. There are murals enshrined outside the Buddhist temple depicting the crowning of Vibeeshana. The Kelani River is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana and Vibeeshana palace was said to be on the banks of this river. The reason Lakshmana crowned Vibeeshana, was because Rama had to return to India as he had to continue his self-exile of fourteen years to honour the commitment to his father, King Dasarath of Ayodhya.

Can reach in less than an hour from Colombo. It is believed Lord Buddha visited kelaniya on an invitation by the ancient King Maniakkika. Lord Buddha visited with 500 arahath Sanga bhikkus. King has prepared a stage for all to sit and a special gem studded chair for Buddha. Later the kelaniya dagaba was made enshrining that chair. It is believed that, all since done since birth will be voided when you worship Kelaniya. "උපන්දා සිට කරපු පව් නැත වරක් වැන්දොත් කැලණියේ"

Kelaniya Temple believed to had been built in the era prior to the chronologically recorded history of Sir Lanka (since 543 B.C) was renovated by Prince Uttiya, brother of King Devanampiyatissa following the arrival Arahat Mahinda in 307 BC. According to the Mahawansa, King Devanampiyatissa’s brother Uttiya renovated the vihara for the first time. Prince Uttiya also built the first ever residential quarters of the Buddhist monks (Sanghawasa) there. The ancient temple was destroyed time and again by the Dravidian invaders from Southern India. Each time the temple had been reconstructed. The medieval temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1510 yet reconstructed by King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha in the year 1967. New Temple was initiated in 1927 and completed in 1946 under the patronage of philanthropist Mrs. Helena Wijewardene.

And also there is enough space to parl your vehicles. As a Buddhist, it is a sacred place that you must offer. ❤️

Buddhists believe the temple to have been hallowed during the third and final visit of the Buddha to Sri Lanka, eight years after gaining enlightenment.[4] Its history would thus go back to before 500 BCE. The Kelaniya Stupa enshrined a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached. Lord Budhdha's second visit to Nagadeepaya, Sri Lanka was in the fifth year of enlightenment to settle a dispute between two Naga Kings, Chulodara and Mahodara over the possession of a Gem Studded throne. After having listened to the Dhamma sermons by Buddha the Naga kings paid homage to Buddha with overwhelming faith and the throne was offered to Lord Buddha by two Naga kings. The Naga King Maniakkika- Ruler of Kelaniya who also listened to Lord Budhdha's Dhamma sermons pleaded for a souvenir to worship. So the throne was gifted to him by Lord Budhdha. King Maniakkika in turn constructed a Cetiya (Stupa) covering the Gem studded Throne in Kelaniya for thousands of devotees to worship and invited lord Budhdha to visit the holy site. Lord Buddha together with 500 Arahats (Supremely enlightened beings) visited Kelaniya and preached Dhamma, on Wesak Poya Day, after eighth year of enlightenment as Lord Budhdha (in 580 BC which is approx. 2600 years back) .It was lord Buddha's third and final visit to Sri Lanka. “The sin of a life time are all rendered null, Once Kelaniya is worshiped a single time. From wikipedia

One of the most sacred place of Sri Lanka, apart from political ideas. this place holds un imaginable value for buddhists as well as all Sri Lankan Citizens. there is a popular cultural saying that " if you worship this temple in each poya days in a row (there are 4 poya days in a month) your all sin's will be dismissed" that doesn't mean every sin of yours can be redeemed but it means how spiritual this place. a must visit for any tourist or a one who love to be in peace ☮️. ive visited recently in this pandemic period, its pretty calm and quiet. dont forget to help local flower sellers if you're visiting to the temple it really helps them, more than it seems to be.

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, also known as Kelaniya Temple, is a renowned Buddhist temple situated in the city of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. With its rich history and cultural significance, the temple holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors alike. Believed to have been built over 2,500 years ago, the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya stands on the banks of the Kelani River, adding to its scenic charm. According to legends, the temple was visited by Lord Buddha himself during his third and final visit to Sri Lanka, known as the "Dakkhina Vibhanga Sutta." This historical connection has made it a revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists around the world. As one enters the temple premises, they are greeted by a magnificent white stupa, standing tall and radiating a sense of tranquility. The stupa, known as the "Mahachaitya," is said to enshrine sacred relics of Lord Buddha. It is a focal point for devotees who come to pay their respects and seek blessings. The temple complex houses several other structures that showcase the brilliance of ancient Sri Lankan architecture. The "Viharage" or the image house is a beautifully adorned hall that houses numerous statues of Lord Buddha, depicting different postures and gestures. These statues are skillfully crafted and hold great artistic and religious value. One of the most significant attractions within the temple is the stunning murals that adorn the walls of the Viharage. These vibrant paintings depict scenes from Buddhist mythology and the life of Lord Buddha, showcasing intricate details and vibrant colors. The murals are considered to be masterpieces of Sinhalese art and provide a glimpse into the island's rich cultural heritage. The temple also features a Bodhi tree, believed to be a sapling of the sacred Bodhi tree in India under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Devotees gather around the tree, offering flowers and lighting oil lamps, seeking spiritual enlightenment and guidance. Throughout the year, Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya hosts various religious festivals and events, attracting devotees and tourists from all corners of the world. The most significant celebration is the Duruthu Perahera, a grand procession that takes place in January, featuring traditional dancers, drummers, and adorned elephants. The temple comes alive with vibrant colors, music, and the devotion of the participants. In addition to its religious importance, the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya serves as a center for learning and meditation. Monks reside within the temple, guiding visitors in their spiritual journeys and imparting teachings of the Buddha. Visiting the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is a mesmerizing experience that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rich Buddhist heritage of Sri Lanka, marvel at the intricate architecture, and find solace in the peaceful surroundings.

One of the must-visit Theravada Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. You can offer incense, oil lamps, flowers, spices, and garlands. They also have monks who can bless babies and tie blessed threads. You can offer water to the Bodhi tree. Most of the statues are of Lord Buddha, but there are also statues of Lord Vishnu and Lord Saman next to the sleeping Buddha statue. There is plenty of nearby parking. There are vendors who sell flowers and other offerings just outside the temple.

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is a renowned buddhist temple frequently visited by the locals. A popular belief suggests that a visit to Kelaniya can absolve one of sins accumulated since birth. The temple's historical significance is evident, with signs of its dignified past still visible. Pretty crowded on weekends and obviously on Poya days.
