Independence memorial hall is known as one of the national monument of Sri Lanka. It is located in independence square in the cinnamon gardens, Colombo. It also consists of independence memorial museum. The design of the monument based on the "magul maduwa" which standed for royal audience in Kingdom of Kandy. The hall is open sided rectangle with omately moulded cement columns and a tiled, hipped roof with statues of seated lions surrounding to the monument. Most of the annual national independence day celebrations have been held here. And also the monument served as a ceremonial assembly hall fot senate of Ceylon and House of representatives of Ceylon. Now a days the monument has become a venue for many religious events and annual national day celebrations. Independence square has become one of the most beautiful place to relax in Colombo. In there, the memorial hall and the massive sprawling green lawn outside, the memorial museum, the arcade next door, and hoppers from walker's cafe added different kind of beauty for the location. It has become a one of the most favourite place for joggers in both mornings and evenings. The location has become one of the most popular destination on a city tour. And also if you visit there you can walk around the monument as well as you can relax in the shade of avenue of mango trees. Because of its beauty many local and foreign tourists visit the location every day to see its glory. So.. If you are going to have a visit in Colombo.. Don't miss this epic place!!

Independence Square is a beautifully landscaped public square, historical monument and tourist attraction that is situated in the center of Colombo. To get the full extent of the beauty of this location, I walked around the monument and went exploring the wooded area and the reflection pools. For those interested in a deeper look at the history of the independence movement in Sri-Lanka, there's a small museum underneath the monument.

It's a national monument, and do check out the museum under the main structure. Also a pretty popular jogging track. Not as well maintained as it used to be, but pretty good. P.s: The area used to be a pretty significant airfield during World War 2. This holds a special place in my heart. Used to come here often as a kid, loved those lions. 😊

My visit to the Sri Lankan Independence Memorial Hall have been truly enchanting. The architectural intricacies, with finely carved pillars and depictions of Lord Buddha's life on the ceilings, must have been a sight to behold. This monument, built to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence in 1948, is clearly a testament to the nation's history and beauty. The fact that it's well-maintained and a popular spot for locals to relax is a testament to its significance in the community. Additionally, the nearby arcade, formerly a mental hospital, has been transformed into a modern and pristine space where both locals and tourists can enjoy Western shops amidst unique architecture. This transformation adds an intriguing layer to the area's history and appeal. Thanks for sharing your fantastic experience!

Definitely worth a visit! The architecture is truly amazing, very fine details carved into pillars and overall surrounded by beauty. it was built to commemorate the independence of Sri Lanka in 1948. It has depictions of Lord buddhas life on the ceilings. It it kept clean and seems like a spot where locals come to chill out. Near is the arcade which has many western shops, also nice architecture. The arcade was previously a mental hospital and transformed into a very modern and clean space for locals and tourists to enjoy :)

The morning and evening walks at Independence Square Colombo is my favorite of all the walking tracks available. It is full of greenery and you can take different routes every time. You’ve got architecture to admire, Colombo skies, beautiful trees and overall a beautiful view. You get a free gym facility maintained by the government. A few healthy food stalls that offer herbal porridge, king coconut and even snacks to fulfill your thirst and hunger. Children can ride their bikes or roller skate/ blade around the area. Their is a special cycle track and you can find a little shop that hires bicycles for a very reasonable hourly rate. A nice place to visit for both foreigners and locals.

I was there for a bicycle race event which is organised to help the patients who are suffering from bone cancer. Atmosphere is nice early in the morning. Very calm place. When the bicycle race is finished there, then it became as rush place.

Independence Square and the surrounding area is popular with the joggers. One of the best places in Colombo to spend some quality time reading a book, bird watching or listening to music. You can see many young couples as well as families sitting in the lawn on public holidays and weekends.

The monument was built at the location where the formal ceremony marking the start of self-rule, with the opening of the first parliament by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester occurred at a special podium on 4 February 1948. Located at the head of the monument is the statue of the first prime minister of the country Rt. Hon. Don Stephen Senanayake "The Father of the Nation". Most of the annual National Independence Day celebrations have been held here. Apart from a monument it served as the ceremonial assembly hall for the Senate of Ceylon and the House of Representatives of Ceylon until the parliament was moved to the new parliament complex. Currently it is the venue for religious events and annual national day celebrations.

One of the historical places in the country. Another beautiful creation by late Architec Tom Nevillie. Construction started 4th Feb 1949 and declared open in 1953. The designs is some the MAGUL MADUWA IN Kandy. It has a very valuable Museum and it is unknown to many people. This is one of the tourist attraction places in Sri Lankan. A statue of the first prime minister of late Hon. D S Senanayake is adding more value to the place.

This is situated in an open and green area with wide roads. There’s no ticket to visit this. Busy at weekends. It requires some renovation. Architecture is beautiful, people come here with family to hangout in their free time. Suppose to be iconic but there wasn’t any security except for 1-2 guards directing some traffic.

It's sad to see a place like this. No proper lighting, the fountain is not working. This is such a great place it has to be maintained very well as there are the major tourist attractions but left like an old unwanted place. Sad to see the government or local bodies are not showing interest to attract tourists to boost the economy.

Quite simply a reminder of an era when life was so much more gentler and civilized, when looking at the monument of Independance and the statue of our First Prime Minister.A walk down the shady pathways and trees allows you to breathe and exercise far away from the carbon monoxide of Colombos traffic congestion. Sadly the trappings of modern communication,(mobile phones) have invaded the sanctity of this locale. Why mankind has to jabber away whilst walking/ exercising beats me.Especially in such a serene place. Cool fountains and the parks around make for a great getaway whilst still being in the heart of Colombo.

Recently visited in late night around 9.30pm. They had a water pond with some lit up fountains ⛲. The water show finishes at 10pm... They don't charge you to be enter. Quite crowded even in the middle of the night, because a lot of people come there for late workouts...

Independence Memorial Hall (also known as Independence Commemoration Hall) is a national monument in Sri Lanka built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule with the restoration of full governing responsibility to a Ceylonese-elected legislature on February 4, 1948. It is located in Independence Square (formerly Torrington Square) in the Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. It also houses the Independence Memorial Museum. The monument was built at the location where the formal ceremony marking the start of self-rule, with the opening of the first parliament by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester occurred at a special podium February 4, 1948.

One of the best place in Colombo to chill around with friends or family. Track is nice, I usually do my long runs around here. There are restaurants and fast foods. I highly recommend people to visit here. Ambience is better compared to other parks.

It's an amazing place for some exercises. You can walk, run, bike, skate, etc. I believe there are some crossfit equipment too. Or you can just simply hangout with your friends for a small chit chat under the tress. However, early morning and evenings get busy, so I recommend nights to chill out. Enjoy 🎉

A desolate place of significance... only the nominal value of sacredness and the tool of politicians to use in events of historical value. Basically, the place is just a monument and some small stuff... good to perhaps have a photograph captured in the vicinity, otherwise it's just the values attached to it... but around there have some greate complexes... like Arcade... beautiful scenery with an ancient looking interior architecture!👌

It is very nice euphoria spreading over at least 4 square kilometers. The building itself is a relaxing place for a tourist. There is a walking path where thousands of people using it in the morning & evening. I have seen group of expats also got together in one outfit runs around. Biking also allowed in the carpeted road areas. Even if you want to relax, have a chat with your friend throughout all day this is an ideal place.

Cool place to hang out. The square has a nice feeling of openess. I reached here on a hot day around noon. There was a nice breeze blowing and since the pavilion is at a slight height with open sides it was perfect. The pavilion is made of stone which adds to the cooling effect. Lots of open space, water bodies and greenery around. Fww people were sketching various scenes here and it was a very plesant 1 hour visit. The independence arcade shopping complex is next door but looked quite empty and deserted. The place has significant historical interest. The top panels have various carving depicting what appears to be scenes from Lord Buddhas life. There are stone sculputures of lions around the periphery which give the pavilion a nice aesthetic.

Nice place to visit. There is no entrance fees. But do visit in the evening time as in the day time it’s too hot and you would not enjoy it.

  • 4/5 Anthony N. 11 months ago on Google
Nice architecture in a green, peaceful place where quite a number of local people come to exercise or play in evening time. I like the stone lions guarding the main temple from any direction. Opposite to Independence Square is the luxury shopping arcade, another elegant and beautiful architecture like a small palace. Don't stay there late because after sunset the area becomes quite empty and dark and difficult to get a taxi or tuk tuk even when you use Uber or Pickme app.

Independence Square in Colombo stands as a splendid testament to Sri Lanka's journey to independence from British rule in 1948. Its enduring beauty, characterized by classic Sri Lankan architecture, is a sight to behold and a tribute to the nation's history. The architectural magnificence here is truly awe-inspiring, with intricate details etched into pillars and an overall ambiance of beauty. The open and green expanse, flanked by wide roads, offers an inviting environment. A visit to this national monument is a must, as it encapsulates history within a serene setting. The pavilion, constructed from stone, contributes to a cooling effect that adds to the comfort of the experience. The spaciousness, water features, and lush green surroundings enhance the sense of tranquility. Stone sculptures of lions gracing the periphery provide an aesthetic touch. What's remarkable is that there's no entrance fee to explore this historical gem. On the opposite side, the luxurious shopping arcade offers yet another elegant architectural marvel, akin to a small palace. Independence Square is a journey into Sri Lanka's past and a celebration of its progress. As you wander amidst architectural splendor, you'll not only immerse yourself in history but also experience the harmony of open spaces, artistry, and greenery.

A well kept monument that celebrates Sri Lanka's independence from the colonial masters. The area is beautifully kept and there is plenty of shade in the nearby parks to sit and enjoy the area.

Nice to look around a site that clearly important in Sri Lanka. Not too much to see. A shame some of the fountains were not on. The most memorable part was just across the street in a tree the fruit bats which were amazing to see.
