Mount Lavinia Beach is Sri Lanka's main sea-bathing spot. Here, depending on season, the waves can be swimmable and it's host to some amazing sunsets. Note, however, that this is not a bay like Unawatuna. The waters is swimmable only at certain times of the year and can be very rough, with undertow. If no one else is swimming, don't swim. When Mount Beach is happening, however, it is great - like right now. You can always start from a perch high above, at the Mount Lavinia Hotel, but what's more recommended is driving or tuk-ing down College Road to enter the public beach. From there you can cross the rail-tracks, past the three legged dog and Golden Mile restaurant, and you're on the beach. People sell swimsuits, inflatable balls, sour mango, and manioca chips if you need. The strip also hosts higher end restaurants like Lavinia Breeze, Long Feng, Steamboat, Belize, etc. The main draw, of course, is the beach. Lately it's been clear, relatively non-violent and full of people. It is important, however, to always be wary of the Colombo seas. Like we said before, this isn't a bay. Waves are breaking directly on the shore and the rips have pulled people way out to sea. It's always wise to swim near groups and always keep a close eye on children (and dogs). If you're just wading up to your hips and building sand castles, however, Mount Beach is fine. Around 6 PM it also has some amazing sunsets. If you live here or are only visiting Sri Lanka for a few days, Mount Beach is a decent dip in the sea.

The beach is so long and very close to the rail tracks. A train passes by once around every 3-10minutes. Stay vigilant while crossing to enter the beach. The sunset here is brilliant for photography (the photos I posted are shot on a redmi 9c phone so don't mind the quality) Don't forget to grab some sea shells from the shore as souvenirs. And stay near to cost guards' range of sight. There's a couple of mini hotels / restaurants placed in some area of the beach. I was glad to not witness/be victim of any theft. But as a cause of prevention, I recommend keep your belongings very close. Don't leave them out of your sight even for a minute. Place would be an easy 5 star if its entire area is kept clean. As some areas may have corpses of crabs , plastics, etc. I don't think water sources found on the "shore line" is okay to touch.

Very good beach for the locals with a station of coast guards on duty. Locals work nicely to keep the beach clean. Many restaurant options on the beach.

Famous for its beaches known by many as the "Golden Mile" of beaches, Mount Lavinia has been a hot spot for tourism and laid back nightlife. Many beach restaurants scattered on the beach serving continental menus, eastern and local cuisine, fresh seafood beverages and liquor adds color to the area. The golden mile is undoubtedly is the best beach stretch closest to Colombo and attracts the locals in numbers during the evenings.

ugly town with wonderful beaches Although the city itself does not encourage you to visit, because the buildings are ugly, huge traffic and the noise is incredible Mount Lavinia is a wonderful beach with several restaurants which provide seafood fresh from the sea. From the city to the beach leading small streets that end at the railroad tracks. To go to the beach or the restaurant you cross the railroad track and this is dangerous, because the rail traffic in this place is very big for the evening. Beach divided massive Mount Lavinia Hotel. The southern part is a huge wide sandy beaches and fishermen's cottages by the sea and a wonderful restaurant Buba. On the other side is a huge choice of hotels and restaurants and the beach is a lot of local and small shops with coconuts and fruits. You can go fishing, including catching a lot of amateurs. Very tasty you can eat in a restaurant Mount Breeze , which also has a hotel and a sunbathing area - sun loungers and umbrellas. Very nice ser…

Sri Lanka's main beach resort town, Mount Lavinia is a suburb of Colombo. There are many hotels here, and it can be a good alternative to staying in the city. It's an easy drive from downtown Colombo and a fun way to spend an afternoon. The beach is not a protected bay, so the water can be very rough during certain times of the year. Use caution when swimming. There are some very nice restaurants along the beachfront promenade, and the beach itself is filled with vendors selling everything from food to bathing suits. If you stay at the beach past 6pm, you'll be rewarded with an incredible sunset view.

The beach is nice and lively! It is very recommended if you are staying in Mount Lavinia or in main city Colombo. It took me about 20 minutes from Colombo (fort) to the beach. It was really worth it. You can also do sunbathing. There are nice restaurants along the beach. It is nice to see local enjoying the water.

I think the only famous Colombo beach where you can sit and enjoy the waves. But be weary of the creeps. There’s always going to be some cracked out person that will disrupt your peace. Has happened almost every time we go there.

Mount Lavinia beach is located in the southwest of Sri Lanka, very close to the capital Colombo. It's one of the oldest and most popular local resorts famous for its unique atmosphere and rich history. The beach and the town nearby were named after the popular Mount Lavinia hotel which served as the residence of a British governor over two centuries ago. The owner of the residence had secret meetings with the local dancer by the name of Lavinia who broke his heart. Nowadays it's a modern tourist complex for 250 people that sits on top of the rocky cape and is the coast's gem and resort's main feature. It's always crowded and lively here due to how close it is to the airport and the capital, as well as the main highways. Capital residents come here during weekends to relax after a hard week, swim in the ocean and enjoy their time in karaoke bars or during night parties. Besides that, Mount Lavinia offers water attractions, you can play football and beach volleyball and even ride an elephant along the coast. You can also rent a boat and go fishing or ride across the sea. The beach is equipped with everything necessary, toilets, showers and changing rooms are set up. Sunbeds are offered by cafes and restaurants if you buy food or beverages. The sea is relatively calm and shallow, but be wary of ocean currents. Safe spots for swimming are marked by special flags, rescue workers make sure everything is alright

Good Sandy beach you can easily access in colombo. Very crowded in the evenings and weekends. The main problem i see here is the parking space. There is not much parking space near the entrance. Otherwise it's a great place to enjoy with your loved ones. In the evenings, you can swim at the beach for only 6p.m. due to tidy waves. There are more than 5 life guards and 2 policemen in that area. Which makes you feel a little bit safer. I don't recommend buying water bottles from the small shops near the beach. They taste and smell very different. Can recommend the beach to anyone πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

Some sketchy people walked by but that was about it. Timing was off but anyhow enjoyed the view without any disturbances. Perfect getaway from Colombo's urban madness. Most of the roads leads to the beach from Mt Lav. There are several beachfront restaurants serving good food and beverages for your enjoyment. Family friendly beach and could get crowded in evenings specially in weekend. Provides stunning views of the Indian Ocean during sunset.

One of the very prominent beaches used by the residents in Colombo as well as the tourists. Stretching from the world famous Mt.lavinia Hotel over looking all the way to the heart of Colombo is astonishinly sceneric. Recent past the beach and seawaters have been polluted yet the numbers who visit the beach keep coming. Very popular on weekends and public holidays. A team of coastguards are present on popular days with marked territory for amateur swimmers flagged on the beach front. Lots of places to dine around the beach. ΰΆœΰΆ½ΰ·ŠΰΆšΰ·’ΰ·ƒΰ·Šΰ·ƒ ΰΆΈΰ·”ΰ·„ΰ·”ΰΆ―ΰ·” ΰ·€ΰ·™ΰΆ»ΰ·….

One of the most prominent beach-fronts within the city of Colombo. It definitely is a great escape for some fresh sea air, a dip in the ocean or a gorgeous view of the sunset. Mount Lavinia still remains as a calm area compared to most of the suburbs and this makes it a great destination to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There are also a plenty of restaurants in the area offering a great range of seafood and beverages.

Mount Lavinia Beach is one of the the most popular beaches in the island, situated close to Colombo. On weekends and weekday evenings, you will hardly find an empty beach. This is one of the best locations in Colombo to enjoy the sunset. The famous Mount Lavinia Hotel is situated few metres away from this beach. There are small restaurants on the beach, where the local crowd hang out. As the railway line is running parallel to the beach, caution must be observed on incoming trains when entering the beach. Best time to visit is either early in the morning or the late evening.

Been here several times before (prior to say 5 years ago), but during my recent visit I notied black substance on the beach. Researched on the Internet but couldn't find anything conclusive. Is this some form of contamination, possibly the residues from 2019 oil spill? If so, isnt it unhealthy? Locals were swimming and playing in this with no concerns. Curious to know what it is?

My most favourite beach in Colombo to go to. Relaxing but it does get pretty crowded. You do have multiple good restaurants and bars around the beach. Finding parking would be a hassle. The beach itself, view and peace you get is amazing. You can swim in specific areas and there are life guards. It's pretty relaxing in the evening. Weekend tend to get super crowded and noiser due to all the places playing music and partying. Nonetheless nothing beats a walk down the beach. You can walk all the from mount Lavinia to the end of Dehiwela on the beach which is about 25mins fast paced walk.

This beach is a relaxing place to bring the kids. With your partner you can walk the beach and talk about life. Alone you can watch the waves and reflect on life. Take in the best air you'll get. Fresh fruit, kites & kadala available. After the recent ship spill the beach has been fully cleaned and is very clean now so we need to keep it that way. Food waste you will have to take back with you. Plastic disposal is available.

Excellent safe place to enjoy a sea bath with your family friends and loved ones or even alone to spend time with clean golden sandy beach to watch the perfect Sun set and meet people. Wide range of beach restaurants are superb for dining in or outdoor seated dining at the beach experiencing the gentle sea breeze on the face. Beach Restaurants cater to wide variety of food cravings, beverages and liquors too with bars and table service including candle lit dining experience. You can choose a restaurant based on your budget. I visit Mount Lavinia Beach almost daily taking the College Avenue where entrance is next to Berjaya Hotel and Shore by O which is the best and safest.

Lovely beach side, crowded in weekends evenings. Beach entrance is very poor. Can't pass two vehicles easily. Many road blocks and traffic jams in the evening. Parking not available. ☹

It was a wonderful day by the beach⛱️ Not many people by the beach. Probably due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. But I've been here back in the day when things were normal. It was way too busy if you are looking to relax. With the recent landscape restoration there is ample space for children to play around. But I do not recommend swimming 🏊 because the seas are rough 🌊 there are restaurants close to the beach. Public toilets 🚻 not available. Parking facilities not available πŸ…ΏοΈ only street parking and the roads are narrow and can get congested. There is an unsecured railway crossing πŸ›€οΈ and it's very dangerous. I recommend for families to visit but be careful and keep an eye on your children.

Very nice beach. But no decent eating places along it. Better take your own food if you want to spend the day there, hats and umbrellas recommended specially as shades aren't there. Beach slippers or slides on are good foot wear. Very hot sand during the day. Better take extra clothing if you want to enjoy the sea.

Watched the sunset from the beach. The beach was clean & the police ensured that no one gets into the water after 6pm for safety reasons

For me it's the best beach in Colombo. The reasons are... it's clean, safe and spacious. Good place for families and friends to hang around and have a good sea bath. Not only that, it's a good place to play a game of cricket, football or rugby, to run or bring your dogs. But we saw there were some dog owners who haven't cleared dog poo. Dog owners should ideally think about others and clear those. But on the other hand there were no beach rules displayed. That needs to be attended by the authorities. Its good if there were public fresh water showers, but you can visit those small restaurants for a wash. We found one and had a good bath but of course they charged a small sum. Other thing I enjoyed was the magnificent view of Colombo City. Can't believe what the view would be when the Port city is completed... Best times to visit are early morning or evening. Such a cool place... I can come over and over again!

A great public beach fwhich is free for anyone to visit. Ample space so can go in groups and be distant from others. Many come here to play cricket, swim, clect shells, play rugger and even workout in the mornings. So far the best. Only issue is parking your car, but if you get a good lane then your in luck best reach the location by public transport. There are tons of places to eat, chill, swim even and even BYOB and pay only corkage. So you and your friends are bound to have a great time.

Lovely surprise to come across this great long stretch of sand in Colombo. We had a great sunset there with the sky lighting up all sorts of colours. The boy’s hired bodyboards for $1 each and had the best time. The only downsides are that; there was quite a bit of plastic once you got in the water and come sunset all types of flies swarmed us from sandflies to ant-flies.

Very nice place to mind relaxing, body heating and also sea bathing. Most of the times sea also very smooth and calm. Small request if you find any polythene or plastic pieces please collect them and put in to the dustbin πŸ—‘.

Mount Lavinia is located in the southwest of Sri Lanka, very close to the capital Colombo. It's one of the oldest and most popular local resorts famous for its unique atmosphere and rich history. The beach is equipped with everything necessary, toilets, showers and changing rooms are set up. Sunbeds are offered by cafes and restaurants if you buy food or beverages. The sea is relatively calm and shallow, but be wary of ocean currents. Safe spots for swimming are marked by special flags, rescue workers make sure everything is alright.

This is probably the most dirtiest beach I’ve ever seen in Sri Lanka rest of south coast beaches are so overcrowded with tourists, locals and water sports guys but still they’re very nice and clean. Government should think about this beach as well. I guess maybe because it’s popular with only local people.

Best place to relax and enjoy your day with your loved ones . There are restaurants alongside the beach as well. It's good to come in the evening or in the morning. We went in the morning and it wasn't crowded at all.

The beach is a great place to relax, unwind, and soak up the sun. You can take a leisurely walk along the shore, swim in the calm waters, or simply lounge on the sand and enjoy the scenery. There are several restaurants and cafes along the beach where you can enjoy a delicious meal or refreshing drink while taking in the views. In addition, the beach is conveniently located near several hotels, making it a great place to stay if you're looking for a beachfront vacation.

Mount Lavinia beach is stunning and it is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. The sunset in the evening is very beautiful. Good for a day out with family or friends. Usually this place gets crowded. It is located near Mount Lavinia Railway Station and easy to visit.

I had a fantastic time at Mount Lavinia Beach yesterday! The beach offers breathtaking views, and the ambiance is truly serene. The restaurant on the beach serves delicious food, and I was impressed by the variety and quality of dishes. The staff was friendly, and the overall experience was delightful. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Mount Lavinia Beach is a must-visit destination in Sri Lanka. I highly recommend it for a relaxing day by the sea with excellent dining options!

This is the best beach to enjoy when you are near Colombo. Lifeguards are also there. And you can buy some shanks and toys. Also, there are several restaurants nearby.

One of the best beaches which is in proximity to Colombo . Suitable to bathe yet the beach is somewhat narrow. There are a variety of restaurants along the railway track. The beach provides beautiful views of Mount lavinia hotel from the south and skyline of the colombo from the north. Sunset may be the best time here
