Just around the corner from the Lotus tower is this old and beautifully decorated temple. Very peaceful, calming and uplifting place. No shoes allowed please. Photos can be taken inside at a cost of Rupees 500. One can also participate in a ritual or prayer at a nominal fee. No fee for entering the temple. You can donate if you would like to.

There are a lot of colorful paintings inside this temple. A lot of scenes with small details. If you’re interested in Hindu religion and culture this temple is must visit place in Colombo. We’ve got into curios situation with my wife, and got to be accidentally closed inside empty temple.

Discovered by accident as it didn't appear on Google's suggestion or until your really zoomed in on it's location, a hidden gem we discovered when we were photographing the lotus tower being built. Truly beautiful place, amazing art and very warm and beautiful people. Should be a must if you're visiting temple in colombo.

There are few powerful Shivan temples in Sri Lanka. This is one of the best. Why am I saying that. I was start to go there since 2010. But after 2017 I started to go regularly to Kovil. In here Priests are so friendly. And people are so religious. Priests are known about all the poojas. Specially when it comes to personal poojas we can asked them to do it as we wish. And prices for poojas are reasonable. If you visit colombo this is a place you must visit. Opening hours usually 6.00 am to 10.30 a.m. and 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm. You can buy flowers from near boutique. And there is a small tea shop to grab a bite n have plaintea . Visit this great religious place and experience it. And try to meditate for few minutes . Om Namaha Shivaya

This will be a wonderful experience if you are visiting a Hindu temple for the first time. The temple is spacious, beautifully designed, colorful and has places of honor for several deities. Pleasant atmosphere, although located in the heart of the city, it is cut off from the surrounding world (located between train lines). Dress appropriately for the temple, take off your shoes and bring flowers if possible.

Sri Kailasanathar Swami Devasthanam, or Kapikaawatha Shivan Temple as it is also called by its devotees, is the oldest Hindu Temple in Colombo. Dedicated to the gods Ganesha and Shiva, the temple has been around for over two centuries. It’s also one of the most beautiful temples in Colombo. History The temple was built in Maradana, Colombo by a group of Indian Chetti traders known as ‘Thiruvilanga Nakarathar’ who moved to Sri Lanka for business two hundred years ago. King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha ruled Kandy at the time; while the Dutch had taken over the coastal regions and were managing the incoming trade. It was in this environment that the Chetti traders disembarked in Sri Lanka. They were Hindus and worshipped a small Sivalingam that had been kept under a tree by the other Hindu Chetti traders who lived in the area. The Thiruvilanga City Chettis felt that it was not right that there was no Hindu Temple in Colombo, that had been built according to the Vedic Scriptures. So he brought it up with his fellow traders and they agreed to build such a temple. In 1783 the foundation was laid within the lands of a Chetti trader known as Sri Veerapathran. This same trader also accepted the responsibility of finding the finances for the construction, and the construction work itself. As the group of traders were the foremost and richest people in Colombo at the time, they had no issues; and soon the temple was built. The ritualistic opening ceremonies took place in the proper manner and the Hindus of the era in Colombo started visiting the temple regularly. At the time the temple was called ‘Captain Gardens Temple’. The name was gotten due to the Dutch officer who was responsible for overseeing the trade operations in the area of the temple. He was called Captain, and the area he stayed was called ‘Captain Gardens’. The Features The temple has been created by skilled temple architects and sculptors straight from India; and maintains the classic Hindu temple look that is rarely seen on Sri Lanka. The colorful main tower with its detailed sculptures, intricate lotus-carved main door, solid stone statue masterpieces and other such aspects make the temple a beautiful sight for sore eyes. In addition to the main shrine dedicated to God Shiva; a number of shrines to other Hindu Gods and Goddesses encircle the main sanctum. Included in these satellite shrines are shrines to Ganesh, Skanda, Dhurka, Vairavar, Ambaal, the nine planetary bodies, Kali, Brahma, Sandeswarar and many others. Visitors have to take off their footwear and wash their feet before entering. They are also not allowed to take photos of the insides of the temple, unless proper prior approval is gained. Today Kailasanathar Swami Devasthanum is one of the most popular temples in Colombo, with its devotees numbering in the tens of thousands.

We went there around 19:00. A spiritual ceremony was happening there with a fascinating music. We had chills. The cost is just 100 rupees, nothing for the experience. They let us watch all the ritual. A must-visit.

Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil has nice Tamil architecture and many tourist visit this temple. The temple premise has two separate temples one is for shiva (Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil) and another one of Ganesh. Apart from architectural value, it doesn't have significant important and compartvely it is not big temple. However, it is one the attractive Hindu temples in Colombo.

We stopped at the Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam as we were on our way out of Colombo on Day 4, and I'm glad we did. It was one of the best sights in the city, in my books. It was offbeat, had no entry fees, and was incredibly colourful (thanks to its South Indian influence) - and these are just a few of the things I loved about it. It is actually the oldest temple in Colombo, dating back 200 years. One temple is dedicated to the god Ganesha and the other to god Shiva. Photos are not allowed inside, but it is full of masterfully crafted sculptures. A feast for the eyes, both inside the temple and out. Follow @thatgoangirl for more things to do in Colombo

One of Colombo's most serene and revered Shiva Kovils. Very peaceful and well-kept. Om Namah Shivaya! Next to the main kovil there’s a Ganesh Kovil inside the same premises.

Tamil temples have fascinating architecture- those tall Gopuram’s have years of history. And lord shiva has been generous that I could have his darshan. If you are shiv bhakt & in Colombo do visit this temple. There are other deities as well in temple - I couldn’t take my eyes off at Radha Krishna idol. Couldn’t take photos of the antique idols .

Rising above the mundane surroundings of Maradana, the resplendent Gopurams of the Sri Kailasanathar Swamy Devasthanam and Sri Bala Selva Vinayaga Moorthy Devasthanam Kovil form iconic landmarks of Captain’s Garden. Built during the latter part of the 1700s, the Kovils at Captain’s Garden, Maradana are believed to be the oldest in Colombo. The area had been an island with the waters of the Beira Lake surrounding it. Devotees had travelled by boat to reach the temples to worship and make vows. During the Dutch period Captain’s Garden was known as ‘Cilamagoda’ and was an area of great economic activity since the warehouses for cinnamon, pepper, coconut, oil and coir were located in this vicinity. Today, the Beira Lake no longer surrounds the Kovils, but the railway tracks that are constantly busy with trains. Yet, the environs of the Kovils are peaceful and only the sounds of the poojas can be heard. The elaborately decorated Gopurams reflect the main deities of the respective abodes, Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesh. The interior is beautiful and spiritual, with sculptures and motifs depicting Hinduism and culture. The two premises are connected by a central courtyard where you can worship both. The Kovil dedicated to Lord Ganesh, Sri Bala Selva Vinayaga Moorthy Devasthanam is brightly coloured with a ceiling of murals and sculptures. The Vimanam is made completely of granite and the sanctum holding the ancient statue of Lord Ganesh. It is believed that a Yendra (a copper plated inscription) has been placed below the statue of the God. Chief Priest S Radha Krishna, whose father too was the Chief Priest until the age of 98, ensures that the sanctity of the Sri Bala Selva Vinayaga Moorthy Devasthanam is preserved and discipline is maintained. The Avani Shathurthi, which is the festival to celebrate the birthday of Lord Ganesh will be on August 25. Grand poojas and a chariot procession within the temple premises will be held to commemorate this important occasion. The bells are tolled to signify the beginning of the pooja, devotees gather at both temples. Sri Kailasanathar Swamy Devasthanam, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva is somewhat larger with the Shiva Lingam placed in the sanctum. Statues of other deities have been placed around the Kovil in separate areas for worship. Also significant is the statue of Kannaki Amman in a chariot, which was brought to Sri Lanka specially from India. In Sri Lanka, Kannaki Amman is venerated as Goddess Pattini. Numerous poojas are held daily in worship of the deities. The current Trustee of Sri Kailasanathar Swamy Kovil is M P M Shanmugaraja Chettiar. He ensures that the Kovil is able to function smoothly, upholding the customs and the rituals of Hinduism. The chariot festival for God Shiva begins with the hoisting of the flag on August 25, 2017 and concludes with the chariot procession on September 7, 2017. The Kovils at Captain’s Garden are a place of worship not only to Hindus but other religions as well. People come in their numbers to bequeath to the Gods in prayer.
