Very good place for both adults and kids. There are two shows per day at 10am and 2pm. Saturdays and Mondays are for general public. Other days are for school students. Prices are reasonable. But remember to take the token from security counter before going to the tickets counter to avoid hassle. On the day we visited they showed about natural evolution and night sky. The evolution part was super awesome but the latter was not that interesting. As per their information, they provide few different shows. But the same night sky segment everyday. The shows are in Sinhala medium. They will provide English medium shows only on request. The seats were wooden old fashioned and less comfortable. It's better to sit on North side. You can see the directions (N, E, S, W) on inside wall. Most importantly, remember to make silent your mobile phones and avoid using them during the show.

The one and only planaterium in Sri Lanka. Popular among school children. Daily shows are run which is an animated movie depicting the evolution of space travel from mid 1950s. Weekdays are less crowded. Ticket prices are cheap and reasonable. A must visit place for a child.

The Planetarium established in 1965, was a special feature of the Industrial Exhibition held in Colombo that year. Designed by renowned Engineer Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe, its inner dome, taking the shape of a lotus in full bloom, was constructed by Engineers from Germany. The artificial sky where one could glimpse the night sky during day time is created on a domed screen above an auditorium which could seat 500 visitors. Through a colossal universal projector one could view not only the day’s sky but also the sky of the previous day, week, month or year, and even that of the sky dating back to 25,000 years or up to 25,000 years in the future. An added feature is that a visitor could also view the sky of another country, including the mid night sun of a country in the Antarctic Circle. Natural occurrences such as solar eclipses, comets and meteor showers are displayed through other projectors. All this could be viewed at shows conducted by the Planetarium. Delivery of lectures on astronomy is another activity. In 1999, a Mobile Planetarium was introduced to open some of the wonders of the universe, to those living outside the capital city. Other services offered free of charge are internet facilities for school children, night sky observation camps, astronomy workshops, science exhibitions and seminars and library facilities for reference. The Planetarium will soon be upgraded with the installation of a 4D/Digital full dome projector to project the universe as a 3D space. Show times : Tuesday to Saturday at 10.00 a.m. and 2. 00 p.m.

Better to call and check the availability before visiting. Seats are not comfortable ,but able to manage if you sitting with proper economic. Opening & introducing video displayed in the one side of screen ( roof-South side half ) better to avoid sitting at South side seats. ( N,E,W& S mentioned in the top of inside doors ) children's park is there with simple scientific toys. at the entrance , you can take some remarkable and funny pictures and few arrangements were there as picture backdrop. visited after 25 years.,😅 lots of things to be developed and to be modified with applying/using technology.

Planetarium is opened to general public on saturdays.. 250/- for adult.. The show is interesting and can have sound knowledge about space & stars.. You can't use mobile phones & food & water inside & can't take photographs or videos.. Staff is very helpful but they are strict if you don't follow the guidelines.. Scenery outside is beautiful & there is children's playground too..

Its a very cool place, If you enjoy space then its worth visiting, I didn't know the procedure, I turned up expecting to just look around at the displays and models. I came on a Wednesday at about 1:45pm and found out that you buy a ticket (150Rs) at the counter, then walk around to the entrance to the theater, the show started at about 2pm. The entrance has a super cool skylight, photos of galaxies, small models and displays of the space theme. Good spot if you want to get photos, very unique! I then got escorted to the theater where the show began, it was in Sinhalese so I didn't understand much but if you know the story of the space race then its easy enough to follow along. The second show I didn't understand too much. If you don't understand sinhala then I would recommend just going for the displays at the entrance and the first show or you will probably get a little bored as I did, also can get uncomfortable sitting there for such a long time but a good experience if your'e into space or want some cool photos :)

Overall it was good but you shouldn't sit on the south side bcz the opening show is projected on the south side so best to sit on the north side. The chairs are of old fashion, but if I am not mistaken from my last visit which was about 20 or 25 years before the projects has improved. Few parents had brought very small kids who just didn't keep quite so its better to take kid of ages 6 or above if not you will be disturbing everyone else. I wished if they had a place where kids could look through a telescope in the night so that they would see things with there own eyes.

Visited on 23rd December 2018. Joined the que at 08h00 and got a Token. They started issuing tickets by 09.15 for 10.00 show which did not start until 10.30 (until they finished issuing tickets for everyone). The ticketing process is a mess simply because the staff does not communicate properly nor information is available. It is unfair by the people who come on time for the show to wait till late comers are seated. The building is renovated & in a better condition than before. Air conditioning is alright and comfy enough. However the seats are still in same old condition with nails & pins poking out so better be careful where you sit. Got a small car park so early bird gets a slot. No water or food inside. Show lasted about 1.5 hours in Sinhala medium and pretty interesting. The 3D show is good to look at. Tickets are Rs. 100 per adult and Rs. 50 per child (Local).

Recently I had a good experience at the planetarium of Sri Lanka. Their ticketing system should be improved because until you go there and get the ticket it's not sure. So they should have an online ticketing system at least for a certain amount of seats. Further if they can simplify some of the contents in the show it is better for school children to understand more.. If they develop the children's play area is also good. There is a canteen as well outside.

Entrance ticket prices are very reasonable and affordable. It was only Rs.100/= for an adult. This place is the one and only planetarium in Sri Lanka. It’s very popular among schools children and busy on weekends. So if you are visiting choose a weekday. But the seats 💺 are bit uncomfortable 😣 It’s bit hard for neck to sit on those seats and keep looking up for a long time. Anyhow it’s a must visit place #planetarium

From the outside it looks amazing. But they have lot to improve. Ticketing system is fully messed. No proper way to buy tickets. And the inside entrance looks nice. But seats are very bad. So hard to sit 30 mins continuously. Very bad condition. And they have only two shows. That is not enough at all. People are all over the place.

Okayish experience ! I mean its just the pretty view, the show was kinda boring ngl. Its open for public only on Saturdays at 10 am and 2.30 pm, so this place is typically crowded (mostly noisy kids and parents). Plus you are advised to turn off / avoid using phone during the show. Social distancing is practiced w the seating arrangements so you don't have to worry :)

After COVID Lockdown! Showtime for public is at 10am & 2pm. Better catch the morning one. Before all that call the day before to confirm that they are showing or not. Content have been changed drastically, previously I remember it was all about galaxy. But now it's more educational. Starts with evolution theory by Charles Darvin then move on to the galaxy. Afterwords an explanation of the solar system. Then they will show the same day sky and explain what we can see. Finally stoping with the sun rise.

A good place to get a good knowledge about space and astronomy.Very good for beginners as the shows are very simply explained and in sinhala language. Also you can get to know the night sky of the day you are visiting. A major disappointing fact is that public shows are only available on Saturdays while planetarium is closed Sunday,Monday and public holidays.Other days, from Tuesday to Friday are only available for reserved schools or institutes. You can only get a chance if you are so lucky that one of the reserved schools would not come. Ticket Prices are reliable.

This is an amazing place which gave me a plenty of joy and build up my own creations in scientific thoughts as a child. This is the only place schools take small children as an excursion. It was not situated far away from home, only 2 to 3 hours drive but It was a great pleasure for us to spend a day with our scientific dreams like a reality.......

Inside the planetarium the chairs are old and depleted. Like other reviews had mentioned, these had nails which were quite dangerous. Please take of kids if you take them with you. At least the session I went to was in Sinhala, if you dont understand it, it'll be difficult for you to understand what they talk about - but plenty of good stuff mentioned and great insight into space and astronomy. The first part of the show about chales darwin was a bore, not well connected with astronomy or it was too long. Parking free and inside the planetarium complex. Entrance ticket, there was a formality to get a token first and then a ticket. Try to figure this out before purchasing the ticket!

The National planetarium of Sri lanka is an institute with a History. The “Carl Zeiss Jena IV star projector” installed in 1965. (A true masterpiece of German Engineering) Most importantly the only fully functioning classic projector available for general public. Most probably in the whole world. The newly installed Zeiss PowerDome with two Sony SRX T420 4k projectors Is capable of creating the best true dark views of a night sky Passionate astronomy enthusiasts… this is the place for ya…! Most importantly.. You will need to make appointments for a show.. And they have allocated only the weekend for the general public. Contact them before your visit.. and avoid possible hassles..!

This place is really good. We spent wonderful time with planets, stars and astronauts. Our students also had a fun time with using scientific equipments in the outside. Only sadness is getting unnecessary involvements of some security staff and their rude words. We felt that they do not have any experience with working with school students. So we had a hard time out of the planetarium.........?

(Translated by Google) In 1965 it was decided to hold a Ceylon Industrial Exhibition in Colombo. The Planetarium is an exhibition item presented by East Germany for a competition at this exhibition. But even though it was a German exhibit, it was designed and designed by Dr. A.N. The. It is Mr. Kulasinghe. Dr. A.N. The. Kulasinghe All those V-shaped pieces that look like pili pili were made on the floor. This engineered workmanship, which is practically mounted one on top of the other, means that there is no frame or frame in this building. Some pundits blamed Mr. Kulasinghe for not being able to do this work and waited for him to make a mistake. You know Mr. Kulasinghe is a master of miracles. We made the most of the limited resources available in our country. This amazing design was unveiled on February 1, 1965. After the end of the Industrial Exhibition, the Government of Ceylon purchased this building and other furniture. Since then, this planetarium has imparted knowledge about the universe to hundreds of thousands of people in our country. For many years this planetarium was owned by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. In 1994, the Planetarium was transferred to the Ministry of Science and Technology. The unique device in this planetarium is the carl zeiss universal projector. We bought this from East Germany. This machine can create an artificial sky naturally inside the planetarium. This machine has a light bulb and a lens system with a power of 1500 watts. The star map is marked on the hexagonal part of the machine. The uniqueness of this projector is that it can be rotated in three directions. When the machine rotates east and west, you can see the sky or the universe from anywhere in the world. The night sky we see in Colombo and the sky we can see in New York City, USA are shown at the same time. Planetarium can be introduced as a very important place established in Sri Lanka to introduce astronomy to Sri Lanka and to create interest in it among adults, youth community and students. Here you will be able to learn a lot of important information about space and will undoubtedly be able to get a great experience.

An amazing place for teenagers who are doing science or astronomy. I don't recommend going primary kids there because the session that they put is suitable for the teenagers who have a knowledge about astronomy. Per day about 150 students are visiting there. They also have a good ticketing service.... Such a nice place🔭🌖🌗🌃⭐💫🌙

It's inside the Univerity of Colombo premises, entrance is opposite the OPA building. Once you arrive., you have to get a token from the front desk. Tickets will be issued 30 mins prior to the show according to token number. Meals and drinks are not allowed inside. There is a car park in side the premises which permits about 10 vehicles. There are multiple science models around the Planetarium so you can spend some time there. They are quite interesting. Once you go in it's better to sit to the right side of the hall in a back raw. Show will have a 3D educational movie followed by the proper astronomy part. It's quite interesting. Ticket price - 100 LKR for adult 59 LKR for children.

The last time I visited the planetarium was in 1997 when I go to school. It made me wonder if nothing has changed. Corruption is in every way and what happens to the money that the public are purchasing??

Sri Lanka Planetarium is a public planetarium located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is the first and only planetarium in the country and maintained as an institute under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research. The Planetarium was established on 1 February 1965 by the State Engineering Corporation as a special feature for the Ceylon industrial exhibition held in Colombo same year. The planetarium was designed by the chief engineer from the State Engineering Corporation of Ceylon, A. N. S. Kulasinghe, and was constructed by engineers from Germany. The building takes elements from the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and the Cathedral of Brasília. The building has a reinforced concrete floor and a pre-stressed concrete folded plate roof, which was pre-cast on-site. The building was funded by the German Democratic Republic as a gift to Ceylon. With the aid of a universal projector stationed at the centre of this building, the artificial sky is created on the domed screen above a 570-seat auditorium. The universal projector is a product of Carl Zeiss AG East Germany

Not happy with the service provided. The security doesn’t know how to speak politely. The videos and the presentation is really good for the kids.

Why don't u create a system to issue tickets and tokens at once without issuing tickets and tokens twice, wasting time and money. It would be worth it if the show could be seen easily by all, neck pain will occur for those who sit on the right side. The show is well explained to everyone. As the only planetarium in Sri Lanka, the attention of those responsible should be directed to change the system, so as to get better appreciation from the client and to provide better experience to all.
