Approximately twenty years ago, in the late 1990s, the space where the Floating Market is on Bastian Mawatha was one of the worst areas in Pettah; filled with abandoned age-blackened factories and warehouses, a stinking canal from from the colonial era, shifty looking men lurking in shadowed corners and much illegal activity. In the meantime, along some of the other streets in Pettah, street sellers crowded the sidewalks with small illegal stalls, overflowing with wares, forcing the pedestrians to use middle of the road to travel. This caused several dangerous accidents causing the Urban Council of Colombo to break their heads over it. However with the civil war going on at that time in Sri Lanka, resources were scarce and nothing was done. In the first decade of the new millennium the situation became worse, with even more street sellers blocking the streets and some even spilling into the road. The shady warehouses near the city’s main private bus depot became even more threatening, a haunt of drug dealers, criminals and other lowlife, the place stank and the ground was spattered with all sorts of unspeakable filth. Most decent people tried to avoid going down that way, trying to catch buses from other halts or buy produce elsewhere. With the war at an end the resources used in the war lay idle. Then the Colombo Urban Council came to the decision that this could not go on. They decided to kill several birds with one stone. They engaged the Urban Development Authority  (UDA) on a beautification project that would end up costing Rs 150 Million. The UDA contacted the Ministry of Defense and requested the assistance of the Engineering Units from the Sri Lanka Army and units from the Sri Lanka Navy, who were both at the time finding themselves at a quandary with nothing to do. The military units went to work cleaning up the surroundings of Bastian Mawatha. The canal was dredged and cleaned. Broken and abandoned warehouses were demolished and their lands used as space for the floating market. Trees were planted making the street more green and lively. The canal was extended and widened. A brilliant young architect Thushari Kariyawasam looked the space over and came up with a beautiful design of simple and rustic open-sided pagodas made of smooth grey cement and surrounded polished wooden walkways. The pagodas were built over the water on platforms placed on sturdy pillars, and were reached by wooden boardwalks. The decor was minimalistic, with simple cement cubes placed along the wide boardwalks as seats and shaded by red umbrellas that matched the orange shades of the roofs. Little interesting details that attracted the eyes were added. Surrounded by the now-clean and calm waters of the canal, the space became surrealistic. There were spaces allocated for 92 shopping stalls, including spaces within the pagodas, little wooden huts, and spaces within boats permanently moored to the platforms. Once the structure was complete, the streets in Pettah were cleared of street hawkers, and they were moved to the Floating Market. There, they had to pay rent, but the facilities were better and it was much cleaner. On 25 August 2014, the Floating Market of Pettah was declared open by the Health Minister, Maithripala Sirisena, who later went on to become the President of Sri Lanka.

I visited Pettah Floating Market food court recently and had a mixed experience. The hygiene standards definitely need improvement; cleanliness is crucial for any dining establishment. On the positive side, there's ample seating available under large umbrellas, providing a comfortable environment for visitors. The market offers a diverse dining experience, with both indoor and outdoor options by the lake. The variety of food stalls, including Petti Kade and Yakaa, gives customers a wide range of choices, catering to different tastes. However, I must mention a concerning issue – there seems to be a threat of crow attacks in the outdoor seating area, which can be quite unsettling for diners. This safety concern needs urgent attention to ensure a pleasant dining experience. Overall, while the place has potential, addressing hygiene issues and ensuring a safe environment should be a priority for the Pettah Floating Market food court to enhance the overall customer experience.

Renovated place, but already needs repairs badly. Holes in wooden walkway, many empty stalls, canal is green and full of trash. Would strongly recommend skipping this place.

🛍️ This market exudes a picturesque charm and possesses immense potential, yet the impact of the pandemic and the decline in tourism has taken a toll. A considerable number of shops have shuttered, leaving behind a selection that primarily consists of budget electronics and everyday consumer goods. ☕ While a couple of cafes exist, they lack distinctive appeal. However, the market does provide a welcomed oasis in the midst of a bustling area. It's a spot where you can pause for a few minutes, finding respite after a busy exploration of the market. 🚍 The market's surroundings serve as a local and regional transportation hub, contributing to the daytime congestion. As dusk falls, the area attracts a less desirable crowd, making tourists wary. Many businesses remain closed, and the open ones offer little that's truly captivating. 📸 The market's photogenic qualities offer a redeeming feature, adding a touch of allure despite its challenges. It's a reminder that appearances can be deceiving, as the market's potential is overshadowed by its less favorable location. If you found this overview valuable, consider marking it as helpful to encourage more comprehensive reviews 📦🌟

Pettah Floating market is only good for a short walk around Pettah Area. Other than that, there's nothing to watch there. Most of the shops are closed.

Free entry to this market which is located near the Pettah Market. I got there around 9.30am and it was very quiet which is good to explore without the crowd. Some shops were not opened yet. It was very peaceful though. There were some shops and cafes but nothing really too appealing. However it is definitely a good idea to come have a look and take some photos.

Ideally, this would be an awesome place. However, the economy and the tsunami have taken a toll on many businesses in Sri Lanka and you can really see this at the Pettah Floating Market. About 1/3 of the shops were closed. However, I must say that we did find a few really nice mementos that I love at this place. A few good stores still available. I sincerely wish prosperity upon the amazing Sri Lankan people.

The most beautiful place I have ever visited.. This is a clean environment.. you can buy food and juices in the food court.. And beautiful views here.. Good for celebrating a small birthday surprise or brides to be party.. And they have a boat service... Washroom facilities are available.. But the wash room is not clean and not in good condition.. Overall a good place.. 👍🍃❤️

Beautiful place to visit, but disappointed as not many shops were open. It's Beautiful scenic place to be. We went in the afternoon, not the rift hour, evening it's best choice to spend time here

It’s a pier, basically. Nice city view, but the water is very murkey and the “market” is clearly a tourist trap: lots of cafés, knock-offs and knick-knacks. Go here for the view and try to ignore the dodgy areas around and the beggars.

There are many stalls in this shopping complex both floating and fixed. But actual floating stalls are looked abandoned so long time. This attractive place should be reconstructed. Food stalls can not be recommended because they are making junk foods.

Built by the engineering teams of Navy and Army and located in Bastian Mawatha in Pettah neighborhood is the Pettah Floating Market which floats on the shore of Beira Lake. It’s should definitely be visited once you are in Colombo to get a unique experience. Calm waters of Beira Lake and the colorful people and stalls give a pleasant vista. It is perfectly suited with the waters on one side and shops on the other and with the frequent whistles of train. Both the Fort Bus-stand and the railway station is adjacent to this market. There are nearly hundred stalls selling local handicrafts, jewelry, kottu, vegetables, fruits clothes, electronics etc. The West end entrance leads to Testa Bake House which offers delicious baked items. This place has an aura about it which calls for a visit. Spend the weekend evenings with families enjoying the beautiful sights.

This place is in disuse. There are hardly any shops or restaurants worth stopping for. If this can be spruced up it might be able to draw some crowd. Overall best to skip it.

Recommended place to visit , this market on a water front and with visibility of the Lotus Tower provides some good photo options. the shops sell very basic stuff and prices are high. Very few people visit this place so the market was kind of deserted. Do give this place a miss if you are running short on time.

A cool, relaxing place in Colombo fort by Beira Lake. It's a set of pavilions near Pettah Bus Station and the Railway Station, offering shops for clothes, food, souvenirs and more. Perfect if you're waiting for a bus or someone in Pettah. There are even a few restaurants around. The place has a nice vibe and you can catch a glimpse of pelicans, which adds to the atmosphere. It would be better if the cleanliness of this place were improved. Nevertheless, a great place to hang out, grab some goodies and enjoy the scenery.

The Beira lake extends to the backside of the Pettah Bus Stand. There were some shops and cafes over there. Some boats were visible too. I reached the bus stand early to catch a bus to the airport. Since I had time I strolled along the bank watching some pelicans and herons. There was a Cafe open but I didn't go there. Hence no shopping experience. A refreshing spot though.

Place is not too much crowded. Clean and nice area. Nice views with the lotus tower. It was raining when I was there. Most of the shops are closed but there are few still running.

The Pettah Floating Market has great potential, but it's mostly wasted. The neighborhood around it acts like a bus terminal for local and regional transportation and is too crowded during the day. In the evening, it attracts vagrants and other unsavory characters who scare tourists away. Many of the businesses are closed. Those that remain open are of little interest. The market is photogenic, so it can't be that bad. It just happens to be in the wrong neighborhood.

After shopping in the fort and pettah area, this is a good place to have your dinner. At night you can have your dinner with calm music and a nice city view. The two shops are open the whole night, providing food and beverages. You can order, and they will serve you.

I recently visited the Pettah Floating Market and was enchanted by the unique atmosphere it offers. The vibrant colors of the floating stalls, coupled with a diverse array of goods, create a delightful shopping experience. The market's waterside location adds an extra layer of charm, making it a must-visit destination. The friendly vendors and local crafts make Pettah Floating Market a hidden gem in the heart of the city. Highly recommended!

Not much was happening there when I visited I think its because of the crisis situation. When the country get back into its usual shape it will be a good place to chill and do shopping.

  • 1/5 Kavindu U. 2 years ago on Google
Nothing much to be impressed. Hope atlest they will clean the place with some good water. Not a tourists attraction. No good shops around the area. I'm not recommending any place in there to have a meal or purchase something. Hope one day they will construct this place into something valuable since it is one of the most crowded place where people will get down to visit Colombo.

The market is located near the Colombo Fort Railway Station. It is located around a water body. The market appears to have been developed, especially by keeping the tourist in mind. However, there are not many popular tourist places around, so the market remains mostly deserted. We visited the market in the evening, around the sunset time. There are many shops, but most of them were closed. There were few restaurants, which were open, but with very few patrons.

A Nice place to visit. There are restaurants to eat and small shops to buy clothes. Most restaurants have card payment facilities. A place where you can freely talk and eat with friends. This is near the bus stand.

Floating market has been shut since almost 2 years now. There are few shops which are not on floating boat and are next to water front. Most of shops were close. Not worth visit. Place is well connected by local buses.

A good place to eat and have some rest in the crowded area. You can sit for a few minutes after some hectic roaming around the market. It is at the center of the city, and you can easily find any mode of transportation for your desired destination.

The Pettah Floating Market is a quiet and peaceful spot in the middle of the vibrant Pettah area. It is an ideal place to take a break and wait the bus hours. The market provides a variety of food and other stalls, even if the food may not be the most tasty. However, the marketplace requires appropriate maintenance to attract more people.

I wouldn't go out of your way to visit like I did. Its quite out the way but visit if your're in the area. I went at night and it was very pretty, unfortunately had a street beggar come to me and wouldn't leave me alone. The store owners that were open were all very friendly and its a shame that the custom isn't there for it. I think with some development, it could be a really great spot :)

Floating market is a tourist market in front of Colombo Central Private Bus Stand which has few food stalls & few fashion clothing stalls. Good area to sit & wait or time passing... There is a small waking path & benches to rest & eat...

  • 4/5 Sharmilan M. 1 year ago on Google
The floating market is an effort by the Urban Development Authority to turn Colombo (or at least the area) into a green city. Perhaps they took it literally. The Pettah Floating Markets are located on Bastian Mawatha in Pettah, a neighborhood in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and consist of 92 trade stalls, with a number of the stalls established on boats on Beira Lake. The floating market serves as a tourist attraction selling local produce and local handicraft. Just off the busy main streets of Pettah in Colombo, is a veritable oasis of calm water, dark wood and smooth cement walkways.

Cute place with all the potential in the world. Most of the shops were closed, though, and a lot of the stalls on land were empty. The actual floating stalls all looked long abandoned. Hope the place recovers or is renovated, because with some more shops of the right kind, this can be a really great spot!

A nice place to room around and set for a chit chat. Though needs some improvements, the place still is good enough to be visited at least one time. I personally didn't like the food they offered, taste wasn't upto expectations. However, you can enjoy fresh pineapple here. The water if get cleaned, can add much beauty to the place.

Having not made it to the floating markets on my 2015 trip, I was keen to visit this year (2022). Unfortunately it looks like this markets have been hit hard with the pandemic, lack of tourists in recent years. The once vibrant markets are now just a handful of shops and void units. If 5 percent of the shops remain that is lucky. However that being said; it is a quaint place to visit somewhere different in the hustle and bustle of Colombo, with a lovely distance view of the Lotus Tower and there are a couple of cafe stops remaining to get a refreshment on way through. I would recommend you stop at a cafe to encourage tourism back to the markets and hopefully revival of a iconic place in Colombo in the years to come!

I have a lot of lovely memories here. The bridge on the bere lake and shops placed around the lake made beautiful scene there. You can buy fast foods, kottu, rice, soft drinks, clothes, sports or music equipments from those shops. The railway and great lotus tower is located at the back of floating market. The name suggests as floating market, because of the market on top of the lake.
