This what the legacy stone tablet posted by the Kayman's Bell-tower says: "Kayman's Gate Bell Tower - John Capper in his book titled 'Old Ceylon' mentions that during the Portuguese period and later the Dutch occupation there were two fortifications. The inner fortress is where the present Fort (Kotuva) stands. The outer walls of cabook (laterite) and lime were extended as far as the Saint John's River. This outer Wall stretched along its bank was terminated at the sea beach to form the present Pettah (Pita Kotuva). Kayman's Gate and its tower were then a guarded east approach to Pettah, where the wooded hills of Wolfendhal and Hulftsdorp could be seen in the distance. Kayman (Caiman) meant alligator and the name was given to the gate as the crocodiles, at that period found in the Beira Lake, were coming to this spot to eat the garbage thrown out by the city dwellers. A large bell is hung up In the upper section of the pillar, which has an arch shaped head, decorated with a conical form of design at its apex. The Kayman's Gate bell is said to late back to the sixteenth century, and to have originally hung in the Portuguese Church dedicated to Saint Francis, which once stood in the heart of the Royal City of Kotte. The bell, found amidst the ruins was apparently removed in due course by the Dutch, and was set up on the Belfry at Kayman's Gate." Unfortunately, sad to see the current state of it.

This is a very important historical site. But this place does not seem to be running smoothly. This place is important for tourists as well as those who study history. Therefore, it is best if the Department of Archeology manages the site in a more systematic and attractive way.

I don't know how this thing got its own marker on Google maps because this thing is barely there, and I had to almost climb over homeless people and random people selling junk to get a decent photo of this dilapidated thing.

I frequently pass this site when I visit Pettah. Everytime I feel sad to see the neglected state of this historical landmark. Same is true of the old Town Hall building nearby. I hope someone comes forward to restore and preserve it. After all its one of the last remaining landmarks of the original Colombo Fort structure.

A much neglected landmark of historical value. One could easily miss the location amid the surrounding buildings and the ever-present crowd. If the authorities were more attentive on preserving it, Kaymans Gate Bell tower would be a proper attraction or perhaps a better distraction for the busy shoppers.

Historical place in colombo. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as an ancient construction or a sign. An ancient belfry can be seen from here.

It's a busy local market, most probably a wholesale market selling household items, groceries, fruits and vegetables.. The market is cheapest in Colombo and the shopkeepers accept all currencies..

Historical place. Needs to be repaired and maintained. Located in Colombo, on the Main Street, at the turn off to 4th Cross Street. If you Google, you can get more details of the history.

This Dutch bell tower is one of the fewer things left from old Colombo fort.
