Asgiriya Raja Maha Vihara located in Gampaha - Minuwangoda road and around 2 km away from Gampaha town. Asgiriya Raja Maha Vihara also called Asgiriya Purana Viharaya. This historical temple is an ancient Cave temple. The temple has been formally recognized by archaeological site in Sri Lanka. Temple is situated in an small hill adjacent to Gampaha and is easy to reach. After climbing few steps you can reach the top which will provide you a breathtaking view of the area. According to legends the temples history goes back as far as King Walagamba ( 89-77 BC) where he is said used the caves to hide during his excile after 104 BC. The king is said to have built hundreds of cave temples all over the country at each place where he used to hide during the recruitment of a new army to defeat the invaders.

Asgiriya Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient cave temple situated in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka. The temple is located on top of a hillock on the Gampaha - Minuwangoda road and approximately 2 km away from Gampaha town. The temple has been formally recognised by the Government as an archaeological site in Sri Lanka. The temple is said to have been founded by King Walagamba in the 2nd century BC. It is one of the two main seats of the Siyam Nikaya, the largest Buddhist sect in Sri Lanka. The other main seat is the Malwatta Maha Vihara in Kandy. The temple complex is home to a number of important Buddhist relics, including a tooth of the Buddha. There are also a number of caves and shrines within the complex, some of which date back to the Anuradhapura period. Asgiriya Raja Maha Vihara is a popular tourist destination, and is especially crowded during the Esala Perahera, a major Buddhist festival held in July or August each year.

One of the ancient temples you could reach from Colombo within a short time. After climbing a moderate number of stairs you could reach the top part of the temple, and it gives an amazing view around.

Location is easy to reach from a vehicle and there is enough parking space. Not popular among travelers, but a beautiful place. the old temple is located top of the hill peak and can see around the area when climbed above. The new temple buildings are built down near the road. Need to walk through the trees using the long stairs to reach the mountain top. Beautiful and cool environment. Good for a visit less than 1hr.

Calm & quite place, near the entrance right hand side it has a Buddha statue. And next to that bo tree is there. When you go to the top via steps, you will see few more things. Feel we went back to older days. Because had to go up with older days stone stairs.
