Good place to learn English for any age group. But courses are in the expensive side. For kids one term is just two months or 8 days. Good to socialize your kids and for polishing English communication skills. Consist of good Library and Cafe with reasonable rates. One of my favorite libraries. In courses need to improve grammar, presentation and public speaking skills which lack. Learning environment is good as well as most teachers, except one lady helper to the teacher who was repeatedly harass my 10+ kid.

The British Council is the UK's government approved English language teaching initiative. They have branches in many countries. Within Sri Lanka there are several branches in Kandy, Jaffna and more. There are English language courses, a comprehensive library and facilities to follow and take the IELTS exam. You can use their facilities to self-learn and sit for various internationally accepted exams. The British Council also acts as a partner for conducting exams and other related matters for the many UK universities that have campuses in Sri Lanka.

I used to study there 10 years ago and I remember it being a wonderful institute with friendly staffs (especially the teachers). Today I went after a very long time to enquire regarding the IELTS classes since I didn't understand some of the information provided on their website. It was not a pleasant experience and I've no clue what the heck has happened to British Council over the past few years. I went to their office and got a token for the consultation. The customer service provided was nearly comparable to any other government institution, as the person on the counter spoke in a rude tone. His responses were basically like, "look these details and stuffs from the website and don't come here to bother us". Eventhough I spoke politely during the entire time. I am not exaggerating anything and I'm trying to keep it accurate. He answered all my questions, but not in a friendly manner with a rude tone which I've never experienced in any private organistaion and especially not from a highly reputed institute in Sri Lanka. So I'd humbly request the BC administration to either request their staff to be more friendly and polite or kindly remove the word "friendly consultation" from their official Sri Lankan website. I still have no clue why the service was not upto expected level. Was it because I just went there for inquiry and not gonna make any payment? Or does he have any issues with their management so he doesn't care about the customer satisfaction. I wish I had asked for his name but I'll attach the photo of the token so that the BC administration may able to know about this and try to improve the quality of service if they care for their customer's opinion.

Extremely poor customer service. Once they get the payment, they don't care about you. It takes forever to get a reply via Email. You have to wait on the phone for half and hour and remind them to reply to the Email. Police stations have better services. You guys should really look at your customer services department.

Worst Service when it comes to attestation of educational qualifications. not even sure why the foreign ministry has given them the authority to get this done. They take 21 days to make a copy of a professional British qualification, making you worthless of even working so hard to get qualified. Do not have any kind of decency to explain why they need such a long time. Customer service staff acts as robots and no out of the box thinking!

I was trying to contact the British Council Colombo from 1530 hrs to 1623 hrs. I got connected to the automatic recording 5 to 6 times and extremely fortunate enough to talk to their representatives twice, a lady and a gentleman. My issue was not solved. My son could not attend the online class and had to quit. Very unfortunate. Very poor response and never expected such a renowned organization to do so. I was told one of my friend that, he got the same response. Hope someone will take appropriate measures to avoid these unpleasant situations in future. 😡

If you're looking for a place to take IELTS test, I recommend this place over IDP. They provide better service in every aspect. Staff is friendly and helpful. Went there to take my IELTS test, it was a pleasant experience. You can keep your goods inside the locker and keep it with yourself until exam is over. They have a canteen as well.

Went for certification verification. It’s nice place. Meals on the canteen is lower than I expected. Overall I would say the service is good. I like business places where they genuinely answer calls. Provider informations. Don’t act suspicious. Professional. Don’t mock customers.

Terrible invigilators appointed by British council for Cambridge exams. They are not professional at all and are so impolite. We had a female invigilator angrily scold us for not going inside the hall but we had just reached the venue. This was way earlier than exam time and she was unnecessarily mean. She came to us not once but twice. It really upset us before our crucial exam. Ruined the day. Another invigilator yelled at us angrily asking us to leave while we were waiting collect bags. British council needs to do better than this.. especially with all the money we pay.

Never expected this kind of a pathetic situation from BC. Just playing with our money, without a solution. NO IELTS AT THIS PLACE.

If you are conducting online classes, you should support for difficulties faced by parents. But worst contact center, never answer or support, only running behind money. Ask your people to contact me for more details. My two kids are already in two classes. Ask your people to do their job properly.

Friendly staff and informative front desk. Atmosphere is nice and situated near the centre of Colombo. Multiple classes and causes available with regards to English and related subjects. You may get all information from Internet and as well as in the front desk information counters where staff is really helpful. ..............................................................................

Now IELTS is a business for British Council. I don't recommend anyone to do it here if you need good score. The exam conditions are worse and the examiners are very irresponsible. I had faced many technical issues when I doing my computer based exam, and it distracted me lot. It's very hard to concentrate to the exam on such conditions. After all I didn't even receive my results yet and it's being 8 days since my exam day. It supposed to release within 3-5 days.

Male Washroom is really unhygienic. There’s a cleaner but the toilets and commodes are always dirty. Urine is everywhere. Not flushed. Also most commodes are not functioning properly since they are too old.

I think the British council Colombo has lost its Spark. It is turned out to be just another Sri Lankan English tuition Business. Here is my experience. 1) sometime ago I went online and booked a consultation. Nobody called me back. Then after a couple of follow up calls, I gotta call and as I was speaking to the consultant, I started to feel that he was pressuring me to make a decision on the phone. As a customer I never like this kind of sales tactics and I was very unhappy that that it was from British council. I didn't sign up. 2) then recently I wanted to give it another go, once again I arrange another consultation, and as always no one called me back. This time I left an international telephone number after having double checked with the British council. I was assured that they can call international Numbers. However when I asked why I was not called back I was told they cannot call international numbers. So I had been given wrong information. Anyway the conversation started and then I asked for additional Information about the teacher. One of the key selling points of British council at least when u was a student was that you would be taught by native speakers. However this is not the case anymore. I have nothing against non native english teachers but I am unfortunately not able to see the benefit of going to British council, if they cannot guarantee native speakers. I am a sri Lankan who learnt english from a Sinhalese english teacher and went on to do my ielts at the British council and then spent almost 10 years in the UK Studying and working. I just thought I would share this experience. British council, every teacher is amazing but some students like the extra sparkle of learning from natives. Also please stop with these sales tactics, which sound desperate and cheap. Keep to the appointments, and make sure that the information given is correct. Thanks Disappointed Sri lankan

The experience I had at British Council recently is utterly disappointing. I sat for my IELTS with BC and went for a re-correction appeal. Last time there was no delay in terms of collecting the new test result form from them and I got the refund in no time. This time I had to stay in queue to enter their premises, and then sit in the waiting area for a long time to speak to someone from the front office. When I finally did, he wasn't sure how I'd get the new test report back, and asked me to return the report as per the email I had received. I was never sent an adequate response as to how I should collect my new test report and the time I spent on emails was such a waste. When I called them after several attempts they said that I should have collected my new test report on the day that I submitted my test report before EoR. The second run to them got me the report but the refund took 3 whole months. Very irresponsible and unresponsive. If you're planning to do IELTS with them please think twice!

So I have some tips on areas to improve. (Disclaimer: notes are from my own experience, I don't know if anyone else has been through the same.) 1. Punctuality can be better. Calls on time and sending invoices on time. 2. Student Database can be better. All the same information on the registrations has to be there across online and in person meetings. Thank you

I had a very bad experience with British Council Sri Lanka. customer service officer at fron desk gave us completely incorrect information details. ask us to do payment 1st then will issue app. he said English course is very flexible and we can select class any day of week from 9am to 8pm from app. duration of class is 1.5 hrs. but once we checked app just 4 days and only 3 time slot for day onlu upto afternoon. no any classes Monday, Tuesday and Saturday and after 2pm of other days that classes available. we were under helpless situation and customer care officer does not have any options and ask us to adjust for they given time table which is not practical for my daughter because she already having other deduction classes in the morning finally after hudge argument I managed to convince the our difficulties and we were totally mislead by their customer care officer by giving us incorrect information before payment. only option is get refund payment and find a another course from other insitute. refund will take 28 days to transfer our account after approval please be careful and I would never recommend British Council for English class. they play game behind their reputation. very poor customer care service and lack of attention after payment no one replied e mails and very difficult to call too keep long time hold when our call connected and no one aware clear direction too.

DO NOT REGISTER FOR YOUR IELTS HERE.. I REPEAT DO NOT REGISTER.. THE KANDY CENTER..They change the test date at their own will after you registered and finished the payment. THEY DON'T POSTPHONE THEY PREPHONE giving you little time to be ready. The applicants discomfort is not considered at all. They notify you very late so that you cannot ask for a refund after the change of date COZ YOU WILL ONLY GET A HALF OF YOUR REFUND. AND THERE IS NOBODY TO CONTACT. NONE OF THEIR EMAILS WORK.. FACEBOOK PAGE THEY NEVER CHECK YOUR MESSAGES. THE DESK PERSON IS LIKE A PARROT REPEATING THE SAME THING. "BUY OUR BOOKS, BUY OUR BOOKS". Money minded. Looks like a SCAM CENTER for me. Careful GUYS DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE I DID.

The British Council provides a good array of services. The problem is with the staff who provide information about courses. They don't adequately disclose all the relevant information. I spoke with 3 different service reps, and they provided different bits of information on the same course. I had to put it all together and then realised there was a catch in it. Basically, it finally boiled down to extorting money from students / parents, which I feel is unfair and not justifiable from such an esteemed establishment providing services to mainly less fortunate persons to better their future (there still maybe grey areas I'm not aware of and can be unpleasantly surprised).

Sri Lanka's number one English cooking place. Very comfortable place for learning and taking exams. During early childhood, there are so many ways to practice English. Easy reach by bus, it's hard to park your own vehicle due to heavy congestion. They are giving absolutely brilliant service on these days for IELTS exams. Comparing with other institutions, for refund service they are very convenient. Everything is onto a system.

It's close to Galle Road. Staff is very good and friendly. They have taken precautionary measures to prevent covid 19. Tests are taking place on time. Better be there as per the guidelines.

British Council is a very secure place for children. The staff is friendly and suppotive. It has the best library I have ever visited in Sri Lanka. Library has a huge book collection, and also, the library frequently organize various activities for children. Also a very good caffe is located inside the British Council facility, the food is tasty as well as safe to eat. The British Council premises is clean and toilet facilities are available.

We went there in a lunch time so it took some time to talk them but overall experience was superb. Thay consulting everyone with patients and their administration was outstanding. And the code method for consulting was brilliant. Very safe place to go. Very well organized. Yet to experience the academics.

I would like to share a positive experience of customer service from the British Council team. I wanted to inquire about the AL examination which required me to not only contact them multiple times but also the UK. It was expertly handled by Patalee, Sri and the rest of the team. 5 stars is not enough.

Love the strategies in place to increase efficiency whilst sticking to rules and regulations that ensure safety. Love the extra cooperative staff and security officers that joyfully exhibit their service. Keep up the amazing work!

I find myself in a rather disheartening predicament, as the temporal constraints of my current class schedule have proven to be quite incongruous with my personal commitments. Regrettably, this circumstance has left me with insufficient opportunity to effectively immerse myself in the subject matter. It is indeed disappointing, as I had initially harboured great enthusiasm for the course; however, it now appears that my efforts are yielding suboptimal results and the experience feels, to some extent, futile.
