Fort Ancient is a great place for families. The museum is interesting for a variety of ages. The hiking paths were a little overgrown, so wear hiking shoes so everyone feels comfortable in the longer grass. The Ohio History Connection pass can be purchased here and it allows visitors free access for a year to over fifty museums and historical sites in Ohio. Make sure to ask for a passport so you can get stamps at each site that you visit.

Totally stumbled upon Fort Ancient today while out riding my motorcycle. Paid my $7 and thought I was just gonna ride through real quick and check it out. Not sure how busy this place is normally, but there is almost nobody else out here today. I ended up parking near the North lookout and walked down into the shade on the steps leading downward towards the trail (where I'm typing all this out). What was gonna be a quick trip through turned into me being able to charge my soul. This place is beautiful. ❤

Great site for a half day trip. Museum walked through the history of Native Americans in Ohio. Over thousands of years vibrant societies flourished. The geometric patterns and relationships with the moon and sun indicate that the society that built the earthworks was sophisticated and advanced. There are several short hikes around the park, all appeared to be marked at the trailhead and the path was clear. The earthworks are incredible to see, unfortunately a picture doesn't really do justice to the scale and size of the park. The kids liked the museum due to lots of dioramas and pictures. There was an interesting movie but the kids lost interest after 5 minutes. Nice picnic grounds as well.

Great place to learn about the ancient culture that was here in the Ohio Valley thousands of of years ago. Also a great place to hike on the trails. There is a museum and trails to explore.

Beautiful place to visit! The museum was very informative. The employee's were very nice and knowledgeable. They have a cute little gift shop. We went for a walk/hike on the trails and thoroughly I enjoyed it. The trails were very neat with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The picnic areas were very nice and clean as well.

The place has a museum and a number of trails with overlooks. Some of the trails have stairs, but it's a nice walk. Views are great too.

We went for the first winter solstice as a UNESCO heritage site. Some of the museum exhibits are a bit outdated, but the grounds are interesting and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Anytime you're standing in the middle of history it's amazing. To picture the life of native Americans living there is awesome. The winter and summer solstice is the time to be here.

A nice museum and site with a few walking trails to choose from. There are also picnic benches available for use. The museum has many exhibits that provide information about indigenous life.

It is okay. Some neat historical stuff to see. It was $7 per car for parking and access to the trails or $7 per person for the museum plus trails and parking. I think the longest trail is only a mile and a half. The north and south overlooks are pretty good for a great view of the area. If you live nearby or are in the area it's something neat to check out but it's not worth driving a significant distance to go there. Ceaser Creek Flea Market is nearby and that place is awesome. They also have a really cool resistance festival in the area around September amd October time.

Fort Ancient is the site of native Ohio Indian civilization with a rich history. The actual indian mounds and way of life can be seen exploring the grounds as well as the museum which is well worth touring to get a more complete and extremely interesting history lesson. Ohio is unique in native Indian trading. Many types of rocks, and other items were brought to and traded in Ohio by the indians. It's a great destination for hiking and interesting to kids.

Visited Fort Ancient this morning to witness the Winter Solstice. We we're blessed with good weather and a partially cloudy sky that allowed us to view the celestial event much as the Native Americans did 2,000 years ago. This is a special place not only for the historical significance but for the sacredness it held for our American forbearers. If you get the chance you should visit to enjoy it's beauty and peace.

Awesome Museum that explains, respectfully, almost a thousand years of native history. There's also wonderful trails through the woods and a nearby spur of the 78-Mile Trail along the Little Miami River. If you're in a hurry, you could do the museum in an hour but you really should give it half a day to see the films and read all the exhibits.

Hike was a little steep in spots. Would have been slippery if it was wet. Several Eagle Scout Project bridges and steps. Most needing minor repairs. Saw several bird species including a red headed woodpecker.. Enjoyed the day.

It's a great place for a half trip where you can learn the native American rich history as how they survived and how they developed the geometry and their farming techniques and aa you can see In the photos how they are cooking and life style and there is great hiking place with clear paths and there's a kayak place near by.

Great spot for short, flat hikes. Interesting history. Good signage, friendly staff. Small museum on site. Many benches, picnic tables, spots to rest and relax. Definitely a nice place for an outing. Mostly shades on walking paths.

Seeing a hand made sign on the freeway to mark the exit for this site intrigued me to find it, an hour before it’s opening! I returned later in the day to be amazed with the beautiful and well done displays, historic information, and highly knowledgeable staff. I will return to explore trails, mounds aligned to the sun’s unique positions, and the natural beauty of the area.

Visited Wednesday 7/12/23 The park is closed Mondays and Tuesdays so we adjusted our travel plans to visit on Wednesday and it was worth the switch in our plans. We visited as many of the mounds and earthworks in southern Ohio as we could in a two day period and Fort Ancient was one of the best sites as most of the earthworks are still intact and the park is well managed. The maintenance workers and visitor center staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The museum was huge and had impressive exhibits and informative information. We explored the grounds to see the earthworks and walked a few of the hike if trails. I learned so much! I definitely recommend spending a few hours to enjoy this site and learn about its past.

Awesome piece of Native American history is preserved at this park! Great walking trails and plenty of parking too. The far end of the Fort offers a beautiful view of the valley. The museum was not open when I was there but looked like a nice facility.

Fascinating museum about the history of the area long before and long after the Fort Ancient "tribe". Some of the grounds could use a little TLC. Picture is from the vista point looking West towards the Morrow bridge on I-71.

12 year old, 9 year old, 3 year old and 1 grownup enjoyed our brief afternoon visit and learned a lot. Museum staff was very informative and helpful. Wished we brought food for a picnic though. Beautiful overlook on drive trail. Hold your little one's hand for sure on the first one because it's steep. Amazing to see the Fort Ancient mounds preserved. Museum is small but I guess if you have a History Connection membership, it doesn't make a difference and is worth the trip to see. Somehow afterward, this visit made me want to get back to the basics and have a greater appreciation for nature and of course native Americans.

Native American history and Ohio history at its best! Wonderful museum with tons of great historical information and artifacts. Gteat place for a family day trip. Stop at Caesar"s creek lake, fossil beds or beach. All nearby. Also check out the spillway, great place to fish or have a picnic. Also nearby to bike trail.

The museum is nice. I wish the gift shop had more stuff & the entry was a little bit more welcoming, but it is very educational and does the job extremely well. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Great parking for the trail head next to the canoe rental. The trails has great elevations and maintained well. Clearly the scouts have made an effort to keep it up. Along the trail you can read up on some history for the area and take in some great views. Wear the proper shoes and bring some trekking poles due to the inclines and declines.

Had a great day here just walking the trails in the fall. It was $8 parking to enjoy the outdoors and an additional cost if you wanted to go through the museum inside. We only did the outdoors during our visit. Beautiful overlook here as well.

Very interesting small modern museum about inhabitants of Ohio a long long time ago. I got tired out before I was able to finish reading and listening to everything. I plan to return and continue at the point the Spaniards showed up. The museum building is located right in the midst of these ancient mounds. Fascinating.

They have a lot of different trails around the area with some nice picnic grounds in the back. The trails aren't that well kept but that adds to the nature feeling. Also, while you're there at least visit Eagle's trail for a nice view!

There's so many things to love about an outing at Fort Ancient--from the fascinating visuals and history in the museum, to the gardens just outside where you'll learn what the Native Americans actually planted, to the woodsy hiking trails nearby! Most importantly, you realize how much history took place right in our corner of Ohio.

  • 5/5 M S. 3 years ago on Google
Incredibly friendly staff at the museum. It's open and worth a visit especially if you are looking for a quiet spot to picnic or looking for fun trails. They have a great mix of trails here ranging from easy to some of the toughest and steepest in the area. There are also some beautiful overlooks including one with the Jeremiah Morrow Bridge set in the distance. Its wonderful that this amazing piece of historic land has been preserved. I recommend a visit here.

Growing up in the area this park helped shape my childhood and early adulthood. One of the first times I rode my bike was out here. The view at the end of the park overlooking the forest below and the bridge in the distance is breath taking. Always brings me back to happy memories when I visit here.

We had to go to Fort Ancient with our grade school class and 2 teachers on a bus and go see Fort Ancient. That was in grade school.like 4th grade where i was like 9 and ill be 61 in April. So its too vague in my memory to remember a lot. But i enjoyed it . I remember that. I said theres a lot of fossils here. Isnt it closed now? No maybe not. Im thinking of Fort Scott Camp closed. Went there too! Twice with my sis at age 11 They only closed Fort Scott about 5 years ago or a little more so im glad it was around that long. Camp can be a fun excperience! I liked it!

8 bucks to park, 7 per person to get in museum, I almost forgot it was a tax payer funded state park. But then when I saw the old hard to read signs, I remembered. The whole site looked weathered. Don't waste your money.
